Stillhouse Vineyard makes some very nice wines. I love coming here at the end of day to sit in front of the old school house, drink wine and watch the sunset over the ridge line.

When we visited today - we noted that there is construction taking place - they are adding some additional space onto the winery to accommodate more visitors.

Another solid winery - we tasted five 2005 wines when we visited today:  Cabernet Franc, Meritage, Chardonnay, Seyval Blanc, and Vidal Blanc. We started with the white wines - and went dryer to sweeter, then onto the reds, and finished with the dessert wine.

The Seyval was a little to citrus-like for my taste - to much of a hint of grapefruit; the Chardonnay also did not resonate with me - but it was not bad. I liked the reds - both the Meritage and Cabernet Franc.  The Vidal Blanc was just to light for my taste - it was almost like drinking lightly flavored bottled water.

I bought two bottles of the Cabernet Franc and one bottle of Meritage. They have a lot of potential and will be going in the wine rack to sit for a few years before drinking.

The place is nice on the inside, the ladies pouring the wine were nice. They offered us a couple of types of cheese to taste while drinking the wine - a cheddar, and a white of some sort.

I note they offer smoked Salmon, smoked Black Cod, cheeses, and other munchies for purchase.

Some time soon - the name of Stillhouse Vineyards is going to disappear forever - apparently they have been bought out - the new name for the winery will be the "Philip Carter Winery." I don't like the name as much. The name change will take place some time in May 2008.

Driving up to this winery is an experience.  You feel like you are driving to the end of the Earth through the countryside.  The winery itself is a really pretty place with views of the mountains that surround it.  We visited in the fall, so the trees had stunning colors as well.  The big bump in the road during our visit was that they were hosting some sort of fall festival that had not been noted on their website.  They were not doing tastings on this particular day, but were selling wine by the glass.  The four of us each got a glass of something different and passed our glasses around.  The wines were okay here, but I would have liked the opportunity to taste more to see if another suited my palate better.

The people here are very friendly and were happy to tell us about the history of the vineyard.  We were visiting only a few months after the transition to Philip Carter Winery had been completed.  It seems like a nice family winery and I would go back if for nothing else than the views.

I enjoyed Stillhouse more because of the pourers than the wine itself.  There were two women behind the counter when I visited, and both were very friendly and loved talking about the wine, the industry, and anything else that came up.

The wine definitely can be improved upon, but is not bad. I liked the '04 Chardonnay the best - but make sure to try it a second time after you've had the other wines.  It completely changes and gets an almost cinnamony flavor.

So I was here a few months ago once the transition from Stillhouse to Philip Carter was complete.  Apparently Philip Carter was the father of wine in the States, not Jefferson.  But the staff at the winery can tell you more about that as I don't recall all of the details now ...!

I am very happy that this winery has new life in it.  Stillhouse was in serious disrepair, especially the vines, when the new owners came on board.  It was sad to see.  Now the place looks great.  The winery looks like an old school house. There are lots of windows to let the light in and plenty of space for private events as well.  The tasting room staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.  We were able to spend some time with the winemaker as well.  The wines were all solid - I can't say anything was amazing, but nothing was bad.  My friend & I both bought a bottle of Chambourcin and enjoyed the quiet Monday afternoon on the warm, sunny patio.  Definitely a good stop if you're touring the Fauquier/Rappahannock wineries.
