Review Highlights
i miss this place. it was 3 blocks from my house and the perfect place to get fresh and cheap produce...
when i say cheap, i mean cheap. when you hear your total you will think they messed something up.
Seriously, I can't help myself. One more review!
Today, for $12 I got:
- 3 large heads of brocolli
- 2 yellow bell peppers
- 1 box of white mushrooms
- 3 yellow onions
- 1 bunch of green onions
- 1 large bag of grapes
- 1 head of green leaf lettuce
- 1 box of grape tomatoes
- 3 large grapefruit
- 1 large bunch of fresh basil
THIS PLACE IS SUPERB! Is it organic? NOPE. Does it matter to me? Nope, I'll wash the holy hell out of it anyway, and hey, what's a little pesticide among friends?

HOORAY FOR VEGGIES!
This place is great. For $10 I got:
- 5 red plums
- 5 nectarines
- 2 bags of… Read more »
I used to walk by this place every day yet it never dawned on me to pop in. I guess I assumed a produce market attached to a parking lot in the middle of 52nd Street couldn't be that good. Boy, I was totally wrong! What a gem this place is! I couldn't believe the prices-- they were insanely cheap! The quality is great too. And they have quite the selection (I mean, considering the size). I swear, almost everything was about $1.00 a pound. I had no plans to go food shopping the day I popped in but I ended up grabbing some stuff on the spot. I bought a big bag of green beans, 3 big apples & a few lemons... the total came to $1.82!!! Hell, one single lemon costs $1.00 at the Food Emporium nearby!!! I can't wait to keep coming back here. I just seriously can't believe how it was never on my radar, even though I passed it constantly. And to think I used to complain about the lack of decent produce in this neighborhood (I did!!).
So I'm running broke 'cause I spent all my money for this month, and so I broke my piggy bank for coins and found $10.
I walked over to Stiles Farmers Market and bought 2 celery heads, a pound of salad mix, 2 cucumbers, seedless grapes, 2 onions, cherry tomatoes, and baby carrots. Total was $9.84. In Gristede's I would've easily spent at least $20 for all that.
Not only that Stiles Market saved my life, I got all the freshest ingredients that I could have in the neighborhood for a bargain. I second Diane A. You're a fool if you're still buying your produce in groceries.
Agree with most posts that this is definitely the best bang for buck in terms of produce. Buy all my fruits and veggies there. Also have to give props to the three ladies that work the cashiers registers there - super fast and always bag the goods carefully. One thing that is dissapointing is that in reality there is very little local produce - most of the stuff is new zealand/mexico/west coast - your average supermarket stuff.
If you live in Hell's Kitchen and are buying your fruits and veggies anywhere else, you are dumb!
(I'm critical about their tomatoes--fine for cooking, but I buy them elsewhere for salads and salsa. Their grape tomatoes are fine.)
Believe the hype! This place is a steal. $1/lb for yellow and red peppers - unheard of. $1/avocado - ridiculously cheap. $1.99 for a 17oz bottle of balsamic vinegar made in Italy - I'm sold. Not quite as large of a selection as the green-market at Union Square but a whole lot cheaper! The cilantro at the Saturday market on 57th & 9th has a gigantic bunch of cilantro that is significantly fresher for the same price, so I knocked off a star for still having to make a two stop veggie shopping excursion.
Love this place! cheap produce, but still at a good quality. i spent under $20 and left with 2 gigantic bags. fruit is tasty as well as the vegetables.
only suggestion i have is buy your spinach elsewhere, it was a bit tough and gritty.
I LOVE the prices at the place. I have shopped here twice so far, and the food has been hit or miss. I have had to throw out about 25% of the produce due to rotting, mold, bland taste, etc. However, it's definitely worth a visit considering the prices are about a quarter of D'ags!
Stiles' Farmers Markets are the hidden hell's kitchen gems noone ever realizes exists. It's a shame too because it's probably the best place to get fresh produce in the hood. Before ever stepping inside, I knew it as "that tent right next to Therapy". But it's so much more than that!
The prices are the cheapest in the city. While of course prices vary by season, some staples generally stay the same low prices, like $3.99/lb Mesclun salad mix, $1 bags of baby carrots and $1 for a sleeve of 5 heads of garlic. So cheap - even when comparing it to Trader Joe's or the Union Square Greenmarket. They also take credit cards for purchases over $5 - something you WONT find at other farmers markets!
A wide array of fruits and vegetables, from staples to seasonal fill the shelves at Stile's. In the summer the berry/citrus selection is nice and extremely cheap (I paid $1.99 for a 2lb box of strawberries this summer). There are other items at the store sold on the cheap too, like eggs, containers of pre-peeled garlic, gourmet grind-you-own coffees, salad dressings, pasta, honey and more.
In addition to the produce and packaged good, Stiles also gets fresh breads, pitas and H+H bagels to sell in the store. They're sold at reasonable prices as well and always fresh. Even though the place is like a large tent, they do have space heaters in the winter and fans in the summer. Not as climate controlled as say Whole Foods but I've never spent more than 10 minutes at Stiles anyways.
Stiles rules - not only do you support local business and locally grown food but you also get the cheapest prices in town. I'm a fan and continue to shop here weekly.
My roommate kept trying to get me to check this find out. Today I finally did.. I purchased 3 peppers, 3 onions, 4 limes, 3 tomatoes, 2 squash, etc etc... rang it up.... $4.34!
Incredible prices, quick service. Definitely worth the walk over!!
Whoops... I initially posted this under the other Stiles Market (over on 9th and 42nd apparently)
The only place I buy groceries from - buy a whole week's of food for the price of one carton of strawberries from Gristedes! They have eggs ($1.50/dz, I couldn't believe it), bread, herbs, and even balsamic vinegar. It's kinda small, busy most of the time, and extremely easy to miss - just remember that if you are passing the outdoor parking lot then you missed it!
I think this market has the cheapest fruit and vegetables in NYC. It's in my hood, so I come here in the mornings to buy my fruit, seasonal veggies, H&H bagels, and grind fresh coffee beans for the week -- all at a bargain!
