Is this the new Racine's? I think so. Allow me to explain: Good city location. The atmosphere at S's is more cool and updated than R's, but they still attract all kinds of people (from young singles to three-generation families). It's always busy, and has a welcoming vibe. Like R's, they offer a wide variety of food, executed adequately (although few items are outstanding - more about that later).
3.5 stars. This place is like a Swiss Army knife: There's something for everyone.
Positives:
Steuben's appears to be a very well-run establishment. The service is professional, yet friendly -- the hosts really know how to handle the crowds, and they seem genuinely glad to see you. The bar scene is excellent, and I like the very low lighting. The outdoor patio is also welcoming. We loved the pan-roasted chicken with vegetables: Crisp, high-quality veggies with delicious, juicy chicken. Also, the basic items -- such as wings and mac 'n cheese - are tasty, and priced appropriately.
Negatives:
The menu is over-reaching for a casual everyday spot.... they are churning out too many different things, with too many high-end items. And the servers often don't know diddly about food, saying unhelpful things like "It's good!" I tried the BBQ brisket (which was adequate, but overpriced compared to what you could get at a real barbecue joint). At some point, perhaps in the $16/entree range, I expect a server to not necessarily be a foodie, but to at least have cooked before, to have tuned into the Food Channel on occasion, and maybe, just maybe, have eaten some authentic food around town.
Also: I realize it costs money to properly run a restaurant such as this. But $5 for a Pilsner Urquell? Really?
Why oh why have I not written a review of Steubens before???
I love Steubens - when I moved away to Seattle, it was the restuarant I could go to when I came back into town. What is not to love about the cool diner atmosphere, great mixed drinks and a $4 chicago dog?
I made a great discovery last night thanks to Erik who was sitting at the bar. After 10 pm, you can get "the lucky burger" for $5 which includes there awesome cheeseburger, fries and a pbr!! That is better than fast food folks. Just don't forget to tip on a higher amount!
Steuben's...I think I could learn to love you.
After missing a full bar at the other restaurants we wanted to try last night, we went to Steuben's. I love everything about how the place is laid out. I like the bar, the bar stools, the people behind the bar were awesome and the music was fun.
I looked at the menu was immediately drawn to the Chili Soy Chicken Wings. They came out with the fried cheese that was OK but those wings could stop a war. That's right...put down your guns and pick up wings.
Holy monkey Jesus riding a unicycle these are good. The flavor was sweet but still had some heat and the skin was perfectly crispy. It's food like this that makes me feel OK about being a little fat.
I had the Po Boy and it was pretty standard. It wasn't bad but it calling my friends either. My friends skirt steak however had be wishing for a time machine so that I could go back and get it after my friend told me I should get it.
The bar...the bar was full of hipsters drinking Old Fashions, Sidecars and have you. I don't mind hipsters so much, but I wish they wouldn't have ruined tattoos for me. I will never get a tattoo now because they are so common that those trying to be different, aren't different at all anymore. Other than that, people seemed nice and happy to be there,
One other thing...It's fucking cheap. Holy hell that's a bargin. I will be back Steuben's...for you tattoos, wings and all.
I've been here a few times now and its a good place to go if you can't think of anything else you want to eat. I last had the Chicken Fried Steak special. It was good (what isn't when its fried), nice and crispy. The side dish of some tomato stew was less good. So overall I would give this place three stars, but I gave it an extra star just for the deviled eggs. I LOVE deviled eggs!!! I may have to just have those next time.
Well, yet again, I am torn about how to review a restaurant. Big surprise...
I've been to Steuben's quite a few times, and like so many other Denver eateries, it just keeps going downhill. The first few times I was there I had pretty decent meals. They serve good, slightly upscale diner food. And I am a HUGE fan of diner food. I've eaten grits at a diner in Monroe, Louisiana and had coffee and pie in Truckee, California. I love greasy diner cheeseburgers and indulgent, savory chicken fried steak and eggs with white gravy and hash browns.
While I am a huge fan of such terrific, traditional gastronomical Americana, I am not opposed to fancying up a good down home favorite. Enter Steuben's...
Basically, they have steadily screwed up the basics. Let's talk about my last excursion. Went with a friend to grab dinner. They were busy (not shocking as they usually are), but we got a table within about 10 minutes. My friend ordered a diner standby- a grilled cheese sandwich with a bowl of tomato soup while I went with the daily special- meatloaf with mashed potatoes. The grilled cheese was decent (but really how difficult is it to make a good grilled cheese), the tomato soup was pretty boring as tomato soups go. My meatloaf could have been good, but inexplicably, they smothered it in one of the worst sickly sweet sauces that I have ever tasted. It like ketchup reduced with sugar. What twisted mind would destroy a relatively decent slice of meatloaf with this culinary abomination? I am hoping that it was a one-time misstep, but feel that it was more of a trend.
Steuben's has a nice concept, a lovely space, and a friendly staff. Perhaps they kitchen staff should take a trip along Route 66, sampling the eats at every diner that they see, to reacquaint themselves with what good food should be.
I love this place! Their signature drinks are awesome (my favorite is the Pepino Picante) and their food is just as good. I've eaten there a lot and I never leave disappointed
Steuben's "Cayenne Etouffee" was listed as one of the top 100 must eats in Denver, so I gave it a shot:
Rating: 7
The Skinny: The word "cayenne" can often signal intense heat, but in this case, the spice was just right, and the etouffee excellent. Everything from the shrimp to the sausage to the chunks of tomato in the broth were flavorful. Steubens is most often known for their amazing lobster roll, and I would still say it is the best thing on that menu, but this should not be overlooked, particularly on a cold day.
I've got a picture of it up on the blog if you want to see what it looks like

Had mac and cheese carry out. Ordered with spicy bacon, repeated it, she confirmed. I got there to pick up, same deal. Mac and cheese with spicy bacon. Got home...no spicy bacon. Booooo. Don't get me wrong, it's still great mac and cheese, but I want what I ordered and drove to get, and this ain't it.

My co-worker and I ended up here by very random chance. The place we were looking to eat at was closed for remodeling so we asked some guys sitting on a bench smoking where we should go and they said, "Steubens has killer food on 17th and Pearl."
We walked in to what was a super cool, 50s era decorated old garage and were led to a two person table. Our waitress said we JUST missed the wait line and the place was still packed at 12:45pm.
It is a cool looking diner with a huge, full bar. If I wasn't going back to work I would have started Happy Hour early! Their drink menu looked bigger than their food menu!
I dug the Sobieski vodka bottle filled with water and the 16oz crabmeat tins they used to serve the fries in. The cheeseburger, with its bun a bit greasy, was really tasty and I devoured my entire meal!
A boca burger, cheeseburger, two sides of fries and 1 diet coke = $24. Kinda pricy for lunch but I'll definitely hit this place up again - maybe around cocktail hour!
My favorite restaurant in Denver hands down. Great vibe, great food, nice/accomodating employees, variety, quality, location, etc.etc.etc.etc.
Go for Brunch. Go for dinner. Bring your friends.
GRITS. CORNED BEEF HASH. CHICKEN FRIED STEAK. CHORIZO.
And bacon bloody mary.
Combine it with the bottomless mimosas and football at the bar across the street and you have a day of awesome gluttony.
I was visiting friends in Denver last weekend, and we managed to hit up a few of their favorite spots - Steuben's being one of them. It was Friday night and the place was packed, but they gave us a wait of about an hour. We deemed that reasonable, and hung out near the bar. I had a Pimm's, and boyfriend had a Denver Pale Ale (DPA). I really enjoyed the Pimm's... mmm, muddled cucumber.
Finally, our booth was ready. We had been salivating at everyone's food for the last 50 minutes, so I was excited to eat. We started with several apps - deviled eggs, shrimp and grits, and fried cheese - and a round of PBRs. I don't like eggs, so I skipped those, but the shrimp and grits was AMAZING. I'm salivating just thinking about it. The shrimp were spicy and smoky, and even the buttery grits had a little heat to them. Love. The fried cheese was also great, much better than your average mozzarella stick, but pretty standard if you get fried cheese at an Italian restaurant.
I had a hard time choosing dinner - pot pie was the special, but beef brisket, pulled pork, and fried chicken all sounded delectable. I went with the beef brisket, and I was really satisfied with my choice. The barbecue sauce was definitely home made, with a sweet richness that wasn't syrupy or overpowering. It also came with a side of delicious pinto beans, but I love any beans (good or bad), so I wouldn't say I'm a partial judge.
My 5 dining companions chose: 2 pot pies (excellent, but steaming, piping hot), 2 orders of fried chicken (didn't try, but the leftovers were awesome the next day), and 1 spicy pinto bean sloppy joe. The sloppy joe was actually really disappointing - super bland, not much BBQ, and served on Texas toast instead of a bun, making it nearly impossible to eat. Luckily, this diner also chose to get gravy fries, which were delicious and satisfying in their cheese-covered graviness. Mmm.
We didn't have room for dessert, but friend swears by the coconut cake.
I really enjoyed Steubens - tasty, unpretentious food that doesn't take itself too seriously. I will definitely request it if I visit Denver again!
God, I love this restaurant. I've been for brunch several times and it is easily one of my favorite places in Denver so far. I'm not a huge bloody mary person, but theirs are REALLY good. I've had the crab cake benedict, the chorizo and avocado benedict, the chile relleno (YUM) and most recently the Egg in a Hole, which changed my life. In fact, I'm inspired to write this review right now because I just can't get the damn thing off my mind!
Be prepared for a wait, this place is super popular--but worth it. And they have a full bar to keep you busy in the meantime, which is always a plus. I'll have to make it in for dinner soon, as I've heard their mac and cheese is to die for. And fries smothered in gravy?? Yes, please.
I've been wanting to try weekend brunch at Steuben's for a loooong time so a few weekends ago, my little sis Cindy B and her hub finally took me.
Since I have great affection for eggs (basically, I never met an egg I didn't like) I went for the traditional bene which turned out to be really homestyle, with thick crusty bread, salty ham, and gooey hollandaise with a side of home fry-style potoatoes. It really hit the spot. Cindy and hub ordered chili relenos - not my top pick, but they really enjoyed theirs. Because it's a crime to visit Steuben's and not eat their fries, we got an order *plus* biscuits and gravy - my sister doesn't normally like b&g (which is strange, seeing as she's a southie) but she really liked Steuben's version because the gravy is a bit sweet.
Since Steuben's is in my hood, I'm making it a plan to get back there again for another brunch soon. Next time I'm definitely trying the chicken and waffles.

Happy Hour: Daily 4pm-7pm $1 off Miller High Life Ponies and Little Kings Beers, as well as $1 off well, wine and domestic bottles. After 10pm they have $5 Burgers and Miller High Life Ponies
They have great burgers and fries and my favorite is their signature cocktails. They mix up old school Mad Men style drinks from the mid century. The Sazerac, Moscow Mule, Old Fashions are awesome! They know what they are doing and take pride in their work. Great atmosphere as well.
LOVE Steubens! And, as others have warned, so does a good majority of Denver because there is almost always a wait. But so worth it and the bar makes a great spot to wait! It's one of my favorite spots to grab dinner and start out the evening - try the yummy yummy mac and cheese and wedge salad!
Not like Steubens really needs anymore rave reviews but I figure I could throw one of the pile. After months of hearing how wonderful the food is here, my fiance and I finally made our way there on Saturday. We were seated right away (12:30) but I think we got there at just the right time because by the time we were leaving there were a few groups waiting. Don't let this dissuade you though, I'm sure their wait wasn't long. The space is huge! The burgers were amazing! The mac n cheese was worth writing home about. And the french had just the right amount of crunch to them. Definitely somewhere we'll be frequenting from now on.
We have been to Steuben's a few times it is pretty good. The fried cheese is good and the lobster roll, but most things are a'la carte and it can get pricey. The atmosphere is fun and service is good. The staff is quick to address any problems. My father in law was asked how his chicken fried steak was, and when he had mentioned the gravy was too salty they offered to get him something else. When he declined and said he was fine they removed it from the tab without being asked, which I thought was pretty cool.
I would give it more stars but it is a bit pricey for the food you get, it's just a fancy diner, and I think their breakfast/brunch could be more inventive. Overall it's a good place for a group with people who don't like exotic foods but want somewhere fun and trendy. My godmother from Witchita would think it was the bee's knees.
I've never had a bad meal here or bad service, in fact, I've always had a good meal and good service, which is why I keep coming back.
Most recently, I had brunch with my friend Dave, but I've also had lunch, dinner and cocktails.
Lot's of people watching, interesting cocktails, yummy food, comfort and otherwise, and a great location.
I love their chili-rubbed corn, and their french toast, and once upon a time (when I ate meat) their brisket. My friend Meg makes a special trip for the lobster rolls, my mom loves their flatiron steak. Their grilled veggie sandwhich is yum, too!
I also really like it as pre-show (Fillmore) dinner with friends.
Desserts are meh...I've only ordered once, and was underwhelmed. Perhaps time to try again.
$2.50 for a can of Dr. Brown root beer? You must think I'm rich or something? Spaghetti and meatballs was just OK. The meatballs were huge! BF got a cheese steak sandwich. This place is overpriced for what they serve. It took forever to get our food too!
Would i come back? There is a 40% chance i would. You're paying for the ambiance more than the food i think.
This place needs to serve beds on the menu. So much food so little room in my belly. Wonderful down home traditional hearty meals. Great stuff
It's not the first time I'd been, but last night I stopped in for a quick dinner at Steuben's. Now, something interesting about Denver is that aside from the famous-by-association football and baseball players relegated to our city's high rises, there aren't a ton of celebrity sightings around here. However, the comfort food served a Steuben's seems to draw an affluent, often recognizable crowd of locals and out-of-towners alike; and last night was no different.
As soon as I walked in the door, couple of friends in tow, I spotted Jack White and his band The Dead Weather nestled into one of the 50s-style diner booths just a few feet away from the hostess' table. Moderately starstruck, I stared for a moment before the accommodating young lady with the clipboard ushered us to our table on the restaurant's outdoor patio. Thankfully, the celebrity table was still in sight so I grabbed an inconspicuous place to secretly gawk while sipping on a bottle of Odell's 5-Barrel Pale Ale, a solid Coloradan microbrew.
I ordered the spicy linguini, which is garnished with (verbatim from the menu): garlic, olives, tomatoes, capers, hot peppers, arugula, olive oil. Although the hot peppers were slightly more invasive of flavor than I would have preferred, the kalamata olives and grape/cherry tomatoes provided a fresh bouquet that paired well with the open air and late evening August coolness happening around us.
Like I said, the dinner was quick. We didn't save time for dessert or further drinks; but as per usual, the fare was well-priced, the service was casual but prompt, and the people-watching (which later included a few of those previously mentioned Broncos players) was of Los Angelean quality.
I can't wait to go back and try brunch at Steuben's, however: I'm told that's the ultimate draw.
Over-rated! Clap clap clapclapclap.
I don't get the fascination with this place. I've been there twice, and would have to be strong-armed into going back. The food is bland, the portions are small and yet, it's always packed. I don't get it.
I really love this place, as I have expressed before. But really, I love this place.
Stopped in here the other night after seeing Bon Iver over at the Ogden, and craving some mac & cheese. It was about ten to midnight on a Saturday and were worried they were going to be closing soon (at midnight) we were hesitant to take a table because we didn't want to be rude. But the guy at the host-stand, who ended up being our waiter too, was so so nice and didn't mind serving one last table of the night. We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful summer night.
We ordered some food, to serve our cravings, and mine for mac & cheese. Which, by the way, I have never had at Steuben's, and am always a little bit hesitant to order because of some bad experiences with it. But I thought that their version was really really delicious! Plus, it really hit the midnight snack spot. Yay!
I really wanted to update my review though to really say how nice the staff is here and how considerate they are. I wish I could remember our waiter's name (I am bad with names) because I would give him some credit here, but I can't remember. But really, he was so nice and it was such a lovely evening spent at this fantastic establishment.

I only went there because my friend works there :(
It is really over priced for the quality of food, all four times I have been there in a group or solo my food has been cold. I've done brunch, lunch and dinner and it doesn't matter my service is always lacking.
I tip based on performance, because you make $2.45 an hour is not my fault but I won't tip you for showing up.
Steubens is yummy.
I don't drink here, unless it's late at night and I'm having a hammy and fries, which come with a pbr for 5 bucks. Otherwise, it's not worth it.
I will let you in on a little secret though...Steubens is a wonderful, uncrowded weekend brinch place (minus the booze). They have a wonderful cubano benny that is delish, just make sure to ask for extra hollandaise if you're like me and you love it.
I went there today and had to wait forever for my food, but that wasn't such a huge deal seeing as I was with a friend who I have great conversations with.
She likes to get the tomato and avocado benny with her eggs scrambled instead of poached and cheese on top. It always looks delicious. I've also had the huevos rancheros here and it's pretty good.
If you don't like breakfast foods, junk your diet and get the fried chicken. It's freakin' heaven for the buds of taste.
Also, there are usually plenty of attractive people here who seem to enjoy checking eachother out. Not something I'm into, but if you are, well, there it is.
Bacon infused vodka with Bloody Mary's for brunch!
We are Steuben's Regulars. I feel comfortable here and I love the decor. The crowd is fun and I have liked everything I have ordered. Oh, and the fried corn on the cob is amazing!
Service has always been really nice and I have rarely waited long. The take out service is nice for those nights that you don't feel like sitting down or tipping.
Some of our favorites are the Greek salad, tortilla soup, and the green chili burger. I like to bring family and guests here. Also, I love their chocolate cup cakes. Yum yum yum.
The open floor plan, great booths, outside area and garage door open front wall make for a great place to hang out with friends.
We are big fans.
I am on a mission to identify gluten-free friendly restaurants in the Denver metro area, and had read that Steuben's was a good option, so I thought I'd give it a try. Turns out that they used to have a gluten-free menu, but they scrapped it after learning that there were some holes in their gluten-free claims. Instead of offering a full menu, our waiter said to pick anything I wanted off the menu and he'd ask the chefs how/if they could make it gluten-free. I ordered my favorite - the pan roasted chicken - and was not disappointed.
While waiting for our table we sat at the bar for a bit and they do have a gluten-free beer on hand (nice!) I, however, was in the mood for something kind of fun and mixed, but learned that there really weren't any mixed drinks that didn't contain refined sugar (or a version thereof), another tasty morsel that I'm avoiding. Long story short, the bartender was really nice and talked through some options with me without getting really frustrated - which I appreciated.
Although Steuben's doesn't have a strict gluten-free menu, I'd definitely give them a try as the pleasant wait staff will do their best to accommodate your needs!

++Stuebens retro modern diner decor
++food is equivalent to that which you'd find at a pricier, more upscAle joint. But there's something for everyone
+service was quick and friendly
-perfect meal until dessert. the one I tried (coconut cake) was a let down after how suprisingly superb the other food was.
I can't say I'd live in Denver. Nice place to visit, but a wee bit on the Pleasantville side of things for me. Prior to my friends moving to the Uptown neighborhood, I was convinced it was 50% douchebag. What a cool neighborhood, and better yet...STEUBENS!
Right up my alley. It's a service station turned restaurant, with a cool diner style bar and a nice outdoor seating area. Being from Portland and San Francisco most recently, I jizzed in my pants at the beer selection. On a hot Denver day, nothing cools you off like "the water," even if Pabst bought it, at least they kept the classic logo. The water not good enough for you? How about the champagne of beers in a 7oz bottle? Also refreshing. The small bottle is the equivalent of dating a girl with tiny hands...makes you feel huge.
How about the food there? Spicy Pinto Bean Sloppy Joe is worth getting twice. I did. The biscuits, fried corn, and even the simple house salad are all cheap and done well.
The staff is beyond friendly, and I give an extra star to any place that hires people that laugh at my jokes. Kudos, Steubens.
I'm still in town, so I think I might just head down there and try to drink them out of Olympia. I came within two cans yesterday.
It's effing 90+ degrees out - go get a beer at Steubens.
I didn't think I was going to like Steuben's. I thought it was going to be hipster central (it was) with overpriced food (kinda). But I was impressed with my order - my $8 chili lime chicken sandwich came beautifully presented on a freshly baked roll, with a large chicken breast, cheese crumbles, pickled onions, sauce, lettuce and tomatoes. And a half-sour pickle on the side (nice touch). If you don't know your half-sours from your full-sours, you should. Anyway, it was delicious.
My BF said his green chile cheesburger was fantastic and made him full. That's saying a lot.
Thank you thank you thank you for giving every table a large bottle of water so we can refill our own glasses.
Sides are extra, but I didn't feel the need to order any once I saw how huge my sandwich was. The digs are creative, the service was kind, and I'd love to come back for a cocktail sometime.
I shall now review
A place that I truly love.
By using haiku.
Went on Saturday,
And of course, it was awesome.
Trendy yumminess.
Eclectic drink list
Starts the evening perfectly.
Scorpion bowls ROCK!
Already feeling
Fuzzily fun and cozy,
Slinking in a booth.
Mac n' cheese arrives
My heart swells with happiness
BEST in Mile High.
Now, my second drink,
Delicious Singapore Sling
Tastes delectably.
I would normally
Have eaten some dessert here
But walked out too full.
Like always I will,
With my pants fitting too tight,
Return to Steuben's.
I love roadside diners that serve great American homestyle food. Been to my fair share of diners in my life -- never been to a diner quite like Steuben's. "Why?" Okay, I'll tell you why. Because the food is absolutely high-class quality.
I mean, they still pull off a grungy diner vibe -- it's in an old car garage. The fries come in old aluminum crab meat cans. My drink came in a copper mug that looks like what old miners used to sift through gold pieces. It definitely looks and feels like a diner. But the food quality is phenomenal.
For appetizers, we got the gravy fries and the habanero fried corn. The gravy fries were really good (maybe kinda dry, but the taste was awesome). The habanero fried corn was awesome -- squeeze some of that habanero-peppered lime on it and I could've eaten a field of them.
I got the skirt steak with fries, which at first I found to taste like typical steak. But as I continued eating it (each bite with a few fries), it got better and better. The butter sauce on top made it top-notch. I also got a side of the macaroni & cheese, which was awesome. It wasn't a gourmet, baked mac & cheese -- it was a simple, nacho-cheese Easy Mac style, but it was phenomenal.
I also tried some of the trout, which I think was great. Also tried some of the philly cheesesteak which was AWESOME. The cheese and steak mixture was one of the best I've ever tasted. Braised beef with noodles was okay -- a little bland.
I also had a few drinks: the Mojito and the Moscow Mule. The mojito wasn't very good -- tasted like Sprite with mint. The Moscow Mule was AWESOME -- vodka w/ ginger beer & lime. It also comes in a cool copper cup which makes you THAT much cooler.
Anyways, if I ever come back to Denver, Steuben's will definitely be my go-to spot. I wanna try it for brunch, since everybody raves about it. I will be having many dreams of this place for years to come.
Quick overall: the staff was super friendly and helpful!! The food was mediocre (a bit over priced), overall I'd give it 3.5 stars....
We arrived to get a table for 8, they said they could only make reservations for the size at 5 or 9... not sure what that was all about, so I got there early enough to make sure that we got a table. But while we were waiting for our table to be assembled about 5 people came over to make sure that we were being helped. Our server was prompt and friendly!
The rest of our party arrived and the place filled up quick. They had 1$ High Life ponies for happy hour, which completely rocks! The menu was diverse and made for choosing some dinner a difficult task. From ribs, to burgers, to spaghetti, to trout amandine, to lobster, to fried chicken (which is 16 bucks). the menu appeared to have an identity crisis!
I had the wedge salad, which was great, but it is just a wedge salad, pretty tough to screw that one up. We tried the spicy habanero fried corn, which I was diggin' the flavor, adding the lime to it was a nice touch. Then for dinner the 'spicy' linguine.. which in no way, shape or form had any type of spice to it what-so-ever, the flavor was bland, needed salt, and some (lots) crushed red pepper. The side of veggies were okay. And the hush puppies were good. Someone at the table got the half rack of ribs, they didn't appear to have much meat on them and looked dry (not worth the 14 bucks).
Really cool atmosphere, friendly helpful staff, 1 dollar ponies. I'll go back if I'm in the neighborhood and will stick to getting the 'bar food'!!
I have no idea why it took me so long to eat here, take my advice and go there now (if you haven't already). No need to put it off, you'd only be denying yourself .
Steuben's is essentially a trendy diner. Great drink menu (I recommend the Moscow Mule - amazing. A friend of mine calls it "yumminess in a tin can") , kitchy retro decor and some of the best comfort food I've ever had. It's great. My husband is in love with their mac n cheese and pork chops. They have a steak with chimichurri that totally kicks ass. The bathroom is also immaculate,
I'd eat here anytime.
While it may take three strikes to be out in baseball, it only takes two in the restaurant business...bad food and bad service. I experienced both at Steuben's. After delivering our appetizers, the waiter simply forgot about us......45 minutes later, we brought our situation to someone's attention as we could no longer find our waiter and then after another 10 minute wait, food arrived. I had ordered a chicken pot pie, the house specialty for Friday evening. It had a strange smoked flavor. Since when do you smoke chicken? I sent it back and even the hostess agreed with me that its flavor was off the beaten path. I then ordered onion soup----how could I go wrong -- but I did. The evening was a total loss. Their response, you ask? They presented us with a large piece of cake to take home. Wonder how long that had sat in their kitchen? Give this place a detour.
Steuben's is a cool little retro diner-bar-lounge that has a simple menu with great food. I tried their $8 breakfast burrito and it was outstanding.
The wait staff was hip and friendly and the clientèle ranged from 20 somethings to a senior couple who was enjoying a late night meal.
Decor is retro but not in a cheesie way, nicely done.
steuben's strategy:
serve tasty food in a hip environment for a reasonable price,
BUT...
rob customers BLIND with impossibly high prices on impossibly short-poured cocktails.
time and time again i am in awe at how weak my drink is at steuben's.
the impetus for this review was the fact that 30 minutes prior to writing this, i had the brood on the steuben's patio for dinner and the grey goose martini i ordered was so insulting, such a joke, so relentlessly stash, that even though i was on on a dead-empty stomach, i still did not catch even the slightest buzz...and it was TEN BUCKS.
this is not the 1st time this has happened. my woeful martini was served in a half-assed walmart candle holder and was literally watered-down - couldn't have contained more than .5 oz. of vodka - and though i ordered it dirty, all that was really dirty were the house ethics.
i repeat: this occurs regularly.
on a side note, i am in love with the iceberg wedge & french onion soup, and the fact that they have groovy kid meals and seem to welcome families with open arms (can't say the same about the typical crowd on the patio) but hey - i was annoyed by loud toddlers at eateries before i had my own.
wish i could give 2.5 stars.
moral of story: order beer only - don't fall prey to their unfair cocktail practices...
I end up at Steuben's at least once a month... They don't have too many vegetarian options, but the food is still very addictive.
All of the servers and bartenders are really friendly and helpful, but my fiance and I enjoy sitting at the bar when a girl named Courtney is working. She is by far one of the best bartenders in the city.
Interesting, refreshingly different menu, a great atmosphere and a nice outdoor patio. I ordered the Cubano sandwich, which was good but a cute Crisco can of fries was extra and doubled the price of my entree. Not good! I finished with a triple-layer chocolate cake and a super-malty chocolate shake, both of which were yummy but for what I got it was a much pricier meal than I had anticipated. All-in-all okay but I'd say over-priced!
