A New York/Berlin/SF quality art museum in the middle of an idyllic New England landscape, where you can actually snowshoe in the the winter ... Some of the best French impressionist art this side of the Atlantic, a world-class art history MA program and art restoration facilities ... Honestly, what is holding you back?
Plus, and this is what truly seals the deal, this is where the original copy of Jean-Léon Gérôme's 1870 "The Snake Charmer" is located, which graces the cover of Edward Said's classic, "Orientalism" (1978). There are other great Orientalist-style paintings, like John Singer Sargent's Fumée d' Ambre Gris (1880). If you don't like the art, just go for a hike outside and you'll find something amazing in the surrounding hills.
This collection shows exquisite taste. It has the idealic, the romantic. Some works carry a potent energy, some invoke a nostalgia for a lost time. The works are generally very colorful, and for some of the artists, are prominent works.
What's most surprising of all, is despite the great Renoirs, Monets, and Homers in the museum, some of the museums great works - in my humble opinion - are by minor and unknown painters- some vivid Dutch and Spanish works you'll find in various corners.
The collection at the Clark is on par with the Musee d'Orsay, just smaller.
The one gripe I have with the museum is the fact that they moved the Remington from the first room by the lobby area to the upstairs. It was so impressive before, but now hangs awkwardly in its current placement.
The Clark is worth the trek! If you go in the summer, your visit can easily be coupled with a concert at Tanglewood. It also works anytime of the year as a trip from (or between) Boston and New York City. There are some very cozy hotels in the area.

A really great collection - I loved the impressionist work - and a nice, airy space overall. The Toulouse-Lautrec exhibit is worth checking out. Free (at least during this off season)!
One of the best private collection of arts. Absolutely worth the travel (2,5 hrs from Cambridge by Rt 2 West). Established by one of the heirs to the Singer sewing machine fortune Robert Sterling Clark (1877-1956).
Great landscape, nice little town, wonderful college. The museum itself is not big but is one of my favorite. They have very good exhibitions every summer. As far as I remember they are closing early on Sundays and closed on Monday. Recommend!
A small museum with an impressive collection of Impressionist works. They do have paintings from other eras and movements, but the Impressionists are the big draw. Currently (Summer 2007) they have a Monet exhibit - The Unknown Monet Pastels and Drawings- that is quite eye-opening.
I find their special exhibit galleries to be a bit untidily arranged. I much prefer the layout of the older building and permanent collection.
Nice collection of paintings. A few years ago, they had a great exhibit of John Singer Sargent paintings.
