Okay, another ancient review coming your way...

My favorite studios used to be BDC, Steps and David Howard.  I always said that BDC was like the Fame school (young, full of energy, exciting), David Howard was like church for dancers (quiet, serious, beautiful) and Steps was like a sushi bar (very good, full of smoke and a bit pretentious).

Don't know how much holds true now since BDC has moved twice and David Howard now teaches at Steps.  Steps used to be more crowded than BDC, but it sounds from other reviews like the reverse is true now.

The good news is that David Howard is there and Suzi Taylor is still there.  Both are great for teaching technique and making you a stronger dancer.  Suzi's combos are fabulous drama, technically challenging and she uses wonderful music.  Attending regularly is a must and the posts are frustrating, but you get used to them.  It's like having dancers you have to watch out for that never move.

I really like this school so much!   I've been going there for ballet and tap dancing, I wouldn't go anywhere else.  Try Grant (tap) or Vallone (ballet), both are great teachers!!

Three stars is generous. I think I just wanted to give a place three stars cuz I havent yet given anything three stars. Anyway.
Its convenient If I need a class for whatever reason steps is always there for me.
buuut, as a serious classically trained ballet dancer from schools affliated with good companies this place make s me feel cheap as a dancer. Its probably the sublimenol (spelling?) messages my teachers has given us all these years of dissing dolly dinkle dance studios like these.
Whatever suits you though

If I'm not at an audition or sleeping I'm in a dance class. Soon I will be dancing on a Broadway stage.

ok. . .you can tell i was unemployed basically all summer. . . .so i only took ballet from filipov, which was. . .well, it was hard.  i'm going back to classes with kat wildish at ailey for a while and when i get a triple pirouette on both sides, or *any* freaking petite allegro ever (my kryptonite) then i'll try filipov again.  contemporary wise, turtle has a really solid class, but i love brice's choreography.  he's really into whole movements, so it's a completely different way of thinking about dance (for me at least).  i took lisa harvey's beginning jazz class a couple of times because i suck at jazz, but it's really full of beginner beginners, plus i turned into one of the random posts in the middle of the room once and fell on my face.

i guess my only qualm would be that there are these posts everywhere ripe for the running into!  it's definitely got a more homegrown feel than the sleek ailey down the street, but more variety in classes.  sheesh.  it's overwhelming.

also, i saw danny from season 3 of so you think you can dance here a couple of times, so. . .that's basically amazing.

I have been going to Steps for about 3 years, usually when I have time, so in reality it's probably only been about 8 months when you add it all up and that's why I am still in Beginning Tap.  I really like the people here, I initially went to Broadway Dance but their prices were a little too high. The prices unfortunately have gone up and are now pretty similar to B'way Dance. My instructor is nice and patient, he is a professional dancer and knows a variety of dance styles however his class focuses on rhythmic tap. I started taking tap because my brain was turning to mush at work and I needed something fun and stimulating to take on. My class is pretty small usually 4-8 people. They offer several classes during the week and on the weekend. The only downfall is that the building is really old and so are the air conditioners so it can get really HOT in there. The changing room is also a little cramped. Other than that it is a great school with lots of classes for various levels. I was so happy to find a school that had classes for non dance professional adults. I am not a professional or dance student but I am not made to feel otherwise at Steps.

Do you like taking ballet classes and not giving corrections? Do you like not being challenge in your classes? well steps is for you.. I hate the post in the middle of the studio, I found one ok teacher there. Her name is kathleen smith. I don't want to give up on steps. So Ill give them another try.

I love the architecture inside Steps. There are so many teachers here that I want to take from that it would be hard to do it in the one week I had in New York. I'm moving to New York City to marry Savion Glover. The tap dancing looked off the hook though on a serious tip, i just didnt even get a chance to tap.

This Dance center gives you that very new york open studio feel. Something out of Flash Dance at the end when she auditions. It doesn't have much pretension which I like a lot. Although, I do have SOME formal training, I have never really taken a hip -hop class. I was nervous and had been to Broadway Dance Center the week before (where the students were a little stand off-ish) and was the girl in the back trying frantically to keep up. But here - everyone asked questions and were collaborative. I had a great time. I recommend taking Hip Hop fundamentals with Robin Dunn.
