i came to the states back in 1990. i was 13 at the time and had no idea how difficult my transition from one country to another would be. you simply don't think of these things when you are a preteen.

at the time of my transition i was pretty confused, filled with both a sense of loss and wonderment. loss for the life, family and friends i was leaving behind and in wonder at the idea of living in los angeles. LOS ANGELES. the big bright city lights with its disneyland, knotts berry farm, hollywood studios theme parks. the beatiful beaches filled with bountiful bevies of scantily clad women parading their soft, luscious bodies across the sands and finally the ultra hype glamorous hollywood scene full of star sighting promise.

however, upon arrival i was faced with my first obstacle: language. soon after i was faced with yet another obstacle: culture. before i knew it the experience was not all that it was cracked up to be and soon after, any visions of california dreaming had turn into something darker entirely as i started college at the tender age of 14.

the theme park adventures turned into pool halls missions that later turned into bar quests that would then turn into strip joint exploits as time went on thanks to fake ID's and resourceful and much older peers than i.

for a while, having skipped junior high and high school was indeed a relishing experience. the perks of hanging out with older people that had all the access and resources to go and get in anywhere they wanted anytime they wanted was pure gold.

yet in the process of  going through all these experiences, all trace of innocence became stripped away and soon i found myself, once again, confused. some time in my late teens i realized, i was not quite a man nor a boy entirely but someone that skipped rites of passage and as a result found out too much too soon and without those rites of passage to presage, it made life very confusing at an existential level.

the funny thing about life however, is that it always come full circle and not always in the way we think it's going to do so. i've come to terms with many epiphanies in my life since then yet rites of passage aren't exactly something i can do anything about. even as an adult.

UNTIL now. until i found yelp and the wonderful and brilliant lady in charge of keeping us yelp charges in line: stephy s.

not only did this lady throw an amazing one year anniversary to what has become a wonderful review-minded social community, but she also did it with all the style, class and glamor worthy of an L.A. based 80's teen movie blockbuster.

AND she provided me with one the most essential rites of passage i missed out on in my life: prom.

never mind that hadn't i skipped high school there could have been a chance that i might have skipped prom but i never even had the chance nor choice to make in the first place!

stephy tho, she provided me with that choice and i chose alright and in the process had an amazing, wonderful and beautiful time with some of the most amazing people i have had the pleasure to meet in the time i've been on yelp.

thank you stephy. you know i told you this before but i'll tell you again: you're true blue. the genuine article. you are five stars PLUS in my heart. thanks a million.
