They were okay. Their prices were competitive, when compared to a Lowes or Depot. So we thought why not go with the small, local business directly since Lowes/Depot was the in between man.
They had good selection and was helpful in picking the carpet. Where we wished we had more help was the carpet padding. Apparently 8lb padding at Lowes was different than 8lb padding with this place. So what we got was a lot thinner than we were hoping to get. I wish we had known that padding was different and wish they were more consultative. The installation was was fast, on time and to budget. -

Awesome place, easy to park, in fact closer to Burlingame than San Mateo. Great welcoming, love the display room, has a lot of choice and a lot of natural light and windows which help making a wise decision about the color you like for carpet. They do an excellent job in advising you and the staff is just so so so nice.
Highly recommend Step Ahead. -

They promised carpet well before our move-in date. I called five days before our date (the day they said they'd probably get it), then again two days before, then the day before (they kept saying that the person who knew wasn't in, and I should check back in a few days). They day before, they said that they hadn't taken delivery and the eta was three days after our date. That would have screwed us over in a major way.
I explained to the rep that this situation was unacceptable, so she managed to get special favors from her delivery man and the edge trimmer to get us the carpet on time (with 8 minutes to spare before the furniture movers HAD to get started. I mean, THEY were on time).
In the end, they got us our carpet on time, but it was too much drama.
They had limited colors and selection in my price range. I did get something made out of corn, which seems cool. It works as well as could be expected, but the cats have already damaged it and it's only been a week. I think that the saleslady just overpromised on what the rug could do (stand up to cat claws) and their delivery date. They did try hard to get it to us on time and it is nice looking, though. -

We had some hardwood floors refinished and some new ones put in. Initial contact with Steps Ahead was positive, but after the contract was signed our work was farmed off to a sub contractor who was off on other jobs while his clueless crew stumbled through the work or didn't show at all. Left the house filthy, carelessly left tools behind - a mess and hassle every day. Steps Ahead office had no idea what the sub was doing and Andrew was not involved until the bill was due. Invoicing not done correctly and customer must keep track of supplies and work or get over billed. Website says they do "custom" work but it was an expensive amateur hour. Do not recommend.
