My wife and I had breakfast here. We shared the mac nut banana pancakes, and half a papaya. The pancakes were $9 , but we were totally stuffed after sharing them. So we definately got our money's worth.
The pancakes were light and fluffy, and there was a good amount of banana.
They have a real thing for the Grateful Dead. :)

Very dissapointed and over priced. I ordered the special fo that day, it's Hawaiian fish Ono, it's over cooked and so normal, but my dish cost me $30 which is really rediculous, you can see the photos I offered. The 2 dish we ordered are not so yummy, and too expensive.

They have a great tofu burrito here.  They make great bloody mary's and a mean pina colada. Good service, mellow setting but could definately do without the movie theme music from the 70's. Good thing I can block out just about anything.

Oh Lord how I miss this place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was born and raised on Maui and moved five years ago to be with my bf who is now my husband.

I used to go to Stella's back when they were at their old location in Azeka place. Totally night and day as far as ambiance goes, with the new location being much nicer. I used to go there for breakfast/lunch every weekend until I moved here. The waitresses knew my mother and I by name and one waitress would bring iced tea and coke with a cup full of lemons...that was what we ordered to drink every time. It was such a nice gesture. I miss them so much.

Whenever I get a chance to go home I always go there. I will say this though, I went there for dinner before and I didn't really care for it. But I am still giving it five stars because of the amazing breakfast food, such as the tofu tahini.

Maybe I'm being a little harsh with this rating.  Perhaps it's because there are SO MANY other restaurants on Maui that I WANTED to go to - but we got stuck here for a Wedding Rehearsal DInner.  Boo...

Seems like most people like this place for Breakfast.  Maybe we'll give it a try next time because the dinner was a miss.

The Jambalaya was a little rice-ier than I like. I prefer it to be a bit on the soupy side. Boyfriend had the Scampi, which was a huge portion, but not that great. Boyfriend's brother (the groom) had the cioppino which had a crazy name on the menu...I forget...Bowl-o-Sunshine-Happiness-Something-or-ot her. It wasn't really that special.

I gave them an extra star at the last minute because they set us up in a very nice, private dining room and the server did a pretty good job of keeping up with our 25 person party, all by herself.  Don't be fooled though, the food was just Meh.

Great place! Came here for breakfast. Service was friendly. I had a plate of eggs, rice and Portuguese Sausage. (oh yum!).  The rest of the family members had pancakes. My son had the chocolate chip pancakes and they use the big chips (which I'm fond of) vs. those tiny mini ones that you have to dig to get at. If we had more time we would definitely return at Sella Blues. Plus they played the entire sound track of Saturday Night Fever during our meal...what's not to love???

I went here several weeks ago to try it out.  As a southern mainlander, I was so relieved to find delicious home cooked meals served here!  Roasted chicken, pot roast, mashed potatoes, turkey... this is now my first stop for some good ole down home food!

By far the best place to go to for a hearty breakfast on the island of Maui.  Located in Kihei, Stella Blues cafe has great prices and stellar breakfast options.  The restaurant is huge and has a friendly staff.  They carry local food options as well as the classics.  I LOVE the pancakes and we always order a fresh fruit smoothie.  I have never left here unsatisfied and enjoyed it far more than my $30-something dollar breakfast I had at the Grand Wailea resort.

So my honey and i got married and decided to maui it on our honeytime. Day one of our exploration, we wanted diner food. We drove past the place a few time on our random quest to find my honey some clothes since delta misplaced her luggage. When we got there, we just missed the breakfast which ended at 11am. We were semi disappointed but decided to give it a try still. I had a rachel sandwich and upgraded to a pasta sundried and feta salad for a side. My honey had the teriyaki chicken with rice and a side of fried because we were craving it. If you really wanted to, you could grab a beer or a mimosa like the diners in canada. When the food came, i was really surprised that my sandwich was not greasy. If you ever had a reuben or rachel (reuben with turkey) they usually are greasy and dripping with sauce. The cheese and consistancy was perfect to my taste. For the teriyaki chicken, it could be better but was decent because the chicken was really grilled and the rice was soft. We took the chicken to go because it was huge for my honey. Was a great snack later in the day after shopping. They have music at night apparently too which i would like to go back and experience.

Stellaaaa-aaa!!!

This place has got my love and crap.

Thank heavens for the ginger ale and restrooms here.  Double godsend for my digestive system.

A bit earlier, I'd gotten hella sick at a sushi deli in Makawao. :[

Stella Blues was a very chill place to recuperate.

Only had drinks but the bartender dude was super.

Classic surfing footage plays continuously on a TV in the bar area.  Sweet!

I really dug the atmosphere and great service.

Over-priced food I'll pass on.

But cocktails here?  Totally.

:D

3.5 Stars for having great breakfast - that's all I've ever eaten here because good breakfast joints are hard to come by in Kihei.

I'm not big on ordering pancakes when I eat out - I'm more of an eggs benedict gal but I quickly learned the benedict here is blah but they make up for it with the banana mac-nut pancakes!  Add some coconut syrup and you're good-to-go!  I have a healthy appetite but a short stack of 2 pancakes is good for me, and leaves room for a side of bacon :)

On my way to the airport I stopped in kind of early (7:30) and was worried they wouldn't be open but to my delight they were!  And I got an early bird discount of 20%!  Not sure if that's a regular thing but It's worth asking about!

We went here TWICE while in Kihei for breakfast and my inner Rainman obsession

I ordered Banana Pancakes with hasbrowns. The Pankcakes were the usualy nice fluffy not too soggy bananas but the AHmazing part was the Coconut Syrup you use instead of the Maple Syrup!  Yummy, Yummy in my Tummy!   Something about hot pankcakes and the creamy, milky coconut syrup mealting over those pankcakes and eating outside on the Lanai with a nice glass of Iced Milk!  It was so good I bought some bottles of the syrup home and since have asked my cousin to send me some!

Oh, the hubby had some omlette thing. I honestly can't remember what he had and at one point I I think I forgot he was there. HeeeHeee  But he went twice so that is a good sign he liked it!!!

It's in a mini shopping mall, ample parking. There can be some waiting for a table - but that means it is that good! They do have the usualy loco moco's.  But it isn't some whole in a wall.  Almost like Lyon's but nicer.

I am hungry now!

OK folks... one thing to keep in mind about Stella Blues Cafe:

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BREAKFAST

Loco Moco, banana mac pancakes, Portuguese sausage, eggs, rice.  Don't come here for anything else.

And try the Bloody Mary.  Good stuff.

Stella's is No Ka Oi: I had begun eating at Stella Blues when the Dead still were on tour.

It had always been & still is a nice relaxed place to have some good times, great food & enjoy your time. The food is consistantly fabulous.

The staff are like old friends you can't wait to see - and they treat you like this.

Atmosphere is one of the best.

This little jem is THE place I look forward to eating at when I return to Maui.

After reading all the mixed reviews of this place I thought I would chime in.
Over the last 5 years I have probably eaten at Stella's more then anyplace on the Island. I have never been there for dinner, always breakfast and lunch. The french toast and pancakes are the best Ive ever had. So what that you have to pay 10+ $$$ for them, your on vacation. Plus MANY locals do eat here, thats how I discovered it and they do get a "kama'aina" discount which is offered to all locals in all restaurants on Maui, so suck it up on paying the big bucks for eating out on Maui. The sandwiches are all good, especially the french dip, fries are good... Sounds like what most people are complaining about is the price of what you get. Get over it. The service is great, its very clean and happy staff. Mahalo.

We heard a lot of good things about their tofu scramble, so this was our breakfast destination on day two. Turns out the scramble has an inventive tahini sauce, but the dish is a little bland overall. We left full and had consumed a nice amount of protein and veggies in addition to toast and rice.

Suggested if you are hankering for a bit of morning tofu.

They've got something on the menu to please everyone.  A nice mix of apps, salads, pizzas, pastas, grilled items, updated traditional homey entrees and yummy desserts.  The kids menu was nice too.  It actually had some healthy options, which is welcome on a week-long vacation from cooking.

The room is big, comfortable and dimly lit at dinner.  The service was friendly, but not speedy enough for a table with a 2-year-old.  She took too long to greet us, didn't offer bread (we had to flag someone else down) and although she took the kids' orders quickly, she was on a completely different time table with the adults at the table.  Table maintenance was non-existent, which is something that drives me nuts.  I can't stand it when servers don't attend to stuff piling up on the table just because there are kids sitting there.  They let you sit and rot in your extra napkins, crayons, discarded crusts, etc. until you leave and then they pull out the power tools to clean it up.

The ribs were amazing.  The pizza was too gooey.  The kids' pasta dishes were both good.  Our friend's special request pasta was nice.  (The chef actually came out  of the kitchen to talk with her about what she wanted!)  The hula pie was good.  The coconut porter was interesting, but not something you would order again.  The J. Garcia Zinfandel was a good deal and perfectly fine with pizza and pasta, and in a restaurant covered with Grateful Dead memorabilia, it seemed like the right choice.  All in all, the food was a little pricey, but decent.

I went to Stella Blues for the first time last week  for breakfast when I had a gf in town, it was raining and didnt wanna go to Kihei Cafe so we decided to try Stella's since my other friend always raved about it..  Its a modern nice restaurant in a shopping plaza.. The service is very friendly a bit slow at times but the staff does the best they can cause it is normally pretty busy in there...    The food is really good we shared the Papaya and Yogurt it was really good but its pretty hard to mess that up and I had the Eggs Bene it was really good and I gave my home fries to my friend.. The portions are big and the food is good....   I also stopped in for dinner last week but I wanted pizza and my BF wanted a sandwich and the dinner menu was more filling dinner style kinda dishes so we decided to leave since that's not what we were craving and the owner followed us out to make sure everything was ok and I thought that was pretty cool.. We told him I wanted pizza and he even recommended a good pizza place...  So ya I totally recommend Stella Blues.....

The food here is still great. Breakfast and lunch have always been their strong suits, and I can really only speak to those.

They moved from across the street when a drunk driver crashed through their front window a couple years ago. The restaurant itself is better than the old spot.

I saw Owen Wilson here, too, looking like he had just come back from a Haiku party.

Only complaint is that they let you mix and match their omelet ingredients, but charge an arm and a leg for it.

Excellent coffee and amiable staff.

We ate  here twice during our trip. Once for dinner, (or our first meal in Maui.) and once for breakfast.  I really enjoyed everything I had here. (Some things more than others, but that's how it goes....)

For dinner...
We shared blue cheese toasts. They were warm and the cheese was melted perfectly, so delicious!
I had the fish of the day, shotomi (don't know if that's spelled right)
It was cooked well, and had great flavor. The sauce with it worked very well, without overwhelming it.

For breakfast....
I had mahi mahi omelette with cheese.
I ended up eating the fish out of it, and just nibbling on the rest.
It was way too big for me, and a bit more heavy than I was in the mood for.

They have a fairly extensive menu. Service was good, as was the food.
I would go back next time I'm n the area.

This was actually the most expensive dinner we had while on vacation, but it wasn't the nicest.  The food was good, cocktails were fun.  We went as a large group, with a reservation made months in advance.  No one seemed to know about our reservation when we got there - but they managed to get us all seated eventually.

The food everyone ordered was tasty - very good, in fact.  Not the best value for the dollar, but definitely not as bad as some other restaurants we declined to eat at while on vacation either.  Nothing really outstanding to recommend, I'm afraid.

Stella Blues has its ups and downs, but more often up in my opinion.  There are two dishes there I think they do a great job with:

Smoked Fish Dip - this is an appetizer, and I doubt if we would have ever tried it, except that we know the property manager for the Azeca Shopping Center who told us to get the BBQ Ribs.  But when we ordered the ribs, they were out, so they comp'ed us a couple of appetizers and one was this Fish Dip.  Yummmm - smoked fish, peppers and onions in a creamy cheese base, all baked in a ramikin and served with pita bread squares.  My wife and I will order the Fish Dip and one entree, split both and be stuffed.

The Ribs - get the ribs.

Update: August 14, 2008:  We arranged to meet some friends here for drinks and appetizers in the bar.  The manager rearranged some folks to give us a table for 8.  Great service!  Then they kept the drinks and appetizers coming.  Later we ordered two orders of the Baby Back ribs to  share.  We also had the Funky Nachos, the Ahi Sushi rolls and, of course, the Smoked Marlin Dip.  We were all stuffed and pleasantly buzzed when we left over three hours later.  Stella's is very convenient - we can walk there, then walk home when buzzed !!

Two words......."Haaaaaaaated It". This place looked so nice when we came in. The owners must be the biggest Grateful Dead heads ever, b/c the walls were lined with framed Dead posters and pics of Jerry Garcia.

They also must have been toking when they made the menu. It's all over the place, with choices from fish, to lamb chops, to meatloaf, to personal pizzas, to burgers and ribs. Don't get me wrong, I like choices. But, when nothing jumps out at you, it means they really don't specialize in doing one or two things really well.

Nothing appealed to me on the menu. My dad had fish that was encrusted with macadamia nuts, the official nut of Hawaii. It was the best thing anyone ordered. I had a pizza b/c I couldn't decide and was fished out from eating so much of it. We had coconut shrimp that tasted like the Gordon's Fisherman was hanging out in the walk-in freezer, and my sister had ribs that I thought were just alright. They did fall off the bone, which I like, but the flavor was average.

Nothing special about this place. If you're on vacation, skip it. Drive right down the street to Eskimo Candy, Cafe O'Lei, Big Wave Cafe, or to Buzz's Warf in Wailuku. Those are the standout restaurants on the island of Maui.

I never go out for breakfast on Maui, but I like this place for lunch. The salads are fresh, and the portions are generous. They have a nice poppy seed-papaya house dressing. I have also had the burgers and the french dip. Both were good. I like the unsweetened mango iced tea, and the espresso coffee is excellent. Service at lunch is relaxed and efficient.
Dinner here is a different story. Service is busier, and more chaotic. My margarita was watered down. I hadn't eaten all day and I guzzled it down on an empty stomach, and didn't catch the slightest buzz. Then, the waitress kept trying to sell me another one, which became irritating after i said "No" several times. And, BTW, she forgot to put in our appetizer order. We're waiting and waiting for some food, and then our entrees arrived. I had the "market price" monchong special (which means the price is a shock when you get the check if you don't ask how much it costs before you order it). The sauce was not as advertised, and the fish was overcooked and dry.
All in all, I rate Stellas four stars for lunch and barely two stars for dinner--three stars overall.

This place makes very tasty food and reasonable pricing compared to other places that serve similar dishes, like their fish and seafood.

We had the roasted macadamia nut crusted ahi on purple mashed potatoes.  It was sooo good!

If you like clams, you should try their Oregon Baked Clam appetizer!  Delish!

The only drawback is the view of which there is none.  But hey the food is worth it!  Can't wait to go back when I visit Maui again.

The bf wanted a good local spot for breakfast and the concierge recommended this place. Hmm once we were seated we could tell by the patrons that this place was anything but local. He tried the loco moco and I sampled the banana macadamia nut pancakes (see my posted pictures). Both were good but when the bill came, we knew we were paying tourist prices -- $11 for loco moco?! Next time we are better off finding real local joints from real people and real reviews on YELP!

I came here solely for hangover breakfast after a rough night at LuLu's.  The loco moco was good. Nothing amazing here, pretty standard fare but large portions. The service was good. However, I forgot I was even in Hawaii when I was here. It reminded me of an upscale Denny's or something. I probably should've sat on the patio. For how nice and warm it is in Hawaii, this place should have open windows or something.

We have eaten dinner at Stella's the last few times we have been in Kihei.  The food is good with huge portions and relatively high prices.  They advertise themselves as serving American comfort food, but don't expect diner prices.  But even with the higher prices, we keep coming back because of the range of selections on their menu and the quality of the food.  I had the Jambalaya and the waiter asked if I wanted it "kicked up a notch?"  Of course I said yes and the result was a dish with a kick - not enough to make you sweat, but definitely spicy.  The rest of the group had good results with the ribs, prawns and roasted chicken.  Everyone was stuffed and very happy with the food.

We'd come to Maui for a vacation and had done our research ahead of time.  This place kept coming up as a kid friendly, reasonably priced place.  Wish we'd checked yelp first.  Our party of four adults, three kids and an infant racked up a $200+ bill for dinner.  Jinkies, Shag!  The drinks were "hotel bar" expensive, the food was just okay and one of our adult orders got messed up (the kids all had pizza).  Maybe breakfast is a better deal, better food, and I'm willing to give that a shot, but we'll pass on dinner the next time we come to Kihei.

We didn't get any bad service in Maui and this place was no exception. Service was friendly. They were really good with the kids. All of the breakfast foods were very good. We even got 20% off between 730 and 830a.m. In a parking lot but we sat outside and it was very calm. A group of cops had food inside which is always a good sign because cops know where to eat. Very reasonable and good for kids as well.

What a horrific wait for our dinner.  As tourists to Maui, we read about this restaurant in several tour books so wanted to try it out .  The menu was extensive and I'd say the dinner was adequate but very pricey.  The worst part of this dining experience is the wait for the dinner.  If you'd like good, timely service - skip this establishment especially if you have kids in tow.  We waited almost 45 minutes for our dinner - no one checked back with us to offer any explanation.  We had to ask to see the manager- she finally came with our dinner and apologized and said "we'll make it up to you."  No such thing  happened - they took advantage of us b/c they knew we were tourists.  So our input - pricey tourist trap that treats tourists poorly.
