San Marcos, CA
Best spot I've found in a long while for great sushi at reasonable prices! That is what sets this place apart honestly. I realize that better sushi exists out there but I'm not ready to pay 30+ bucks a roll to have fish plucked from the ocean by virgins delivered in gold wrapping paper I guess.
These chefs have a wonderful sense of fusion in flavors and the atmosphere is very cooled out. Casual dates? Check. Friends from out of town? Check. Creative fusion of flavors vice standard sushi? Check this place out and you will soon be a huge fan also. -

Looking at my past review makes me laugh; how my tastes have changed since then.
laid back, good food, nice place to hang out--that have all remained the same.
if you prefer authentic sushi to creative rolls, then this place probably isn't ideal for you; however, if you want a casual, fun environment with deeeelish rolls (and want to stay in north county), then give this place a try.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Dave F.
The protein roll is absolutely amazing. Warning: It is really big. My buddy orders 2 and takes one home to scarf down for dinner after serious workouts.
The menu has a finite # of Sushi and sashimi options. I really wanted to stick with sashimi, avoiding rice. They are super flexible and will fix whatever you'd like versus my usual LA sushi chefs who insist on ordering for me! For example, I wanted certain items which only appeared as sushi, but they allowed me to order as sashimi.
I had the Tuna, tako (octopus) and Unagi (fresh water eel) with my huge roll. It was really too much to eat, but somehow I did.
Sit at the sushi bar for excellent service and great conversation. -

Last weekend, I was at a Christmas party, as as 7 PM rolled around, it was time to eat.
A couple of the other guests and I went to the Station Sushi for sushi and sake, and beer.
We had the spicy tuna roll, caterpillar roll, a matrix, which we all liked. Another couple joined us a bit later and had the edamame beans and chicken yakisoba.
We were all good and taken care of while going to the Station Sushi. -

Some of the rolls are a bit pricey, and I've been to much better sushi happy hours (I just did two nights in a row of sushi, and last night's at Wonderful Sushi in Hillcrest was better priced and still delicious.) Sushi was good, but I was annoyed that when I forgot my to-go box, they immediately threw it out. I went back about 5 minutes later to retrieve it and it was already gone. When you have $5-10 worth of leftover sushi in a box, at least keep it around for 10 minutes. This really irked me.

Review from Em B.
I discovered this place a year ago while celebrating my good friend's birthday and am now obsessed with their sushi. The seafood is fresh, rice isn't chewy and the quality over all is excellent. Can't complain.
Two words: Protein Roll. One of the guys at the table says to me, "Does the roll come with protein sauce?" with a leer. Me: "Shut up perv!" Or maybe I'm the perv...who cares. Either way he got pelted on the head with an edamame.
Wait time can be long, crowds can be rambunctious, parking a pain. Is it worth it? Yes. Get the Protein Roll...you won't be sorry you did. -

My husband and I LOVE this place! So do our friends and kids. We usually roll in after a hot yoga class at Haute Yoga nearby. The food, staff, and ambience are all great! We start off with scrumptious Lobster hand rolls with soy paper. As already mentioned, the Protein Roll is dee-lish! We also highly recommend the nigiri (Albacore, Hamachi, & Tuna), and spicy seafood salad. The uni is also fresh.Try an unfiltered cold sake in the pink bottle with a Sapporo chaser. Nice!

Station is great. I have never tried a rice-less roll before... So we tried the Protein roll from reading a Yelp review. It was amazing. The best sushi roll I've ever had, no joke. Give it a shot.

Ate here for the first time recently after eating at the one in Bird Rock. Apparently they operate independently of each other and have some owners in common but the food was equally as great.
We really liked the 911 roll so if you like a little bit of kick you should definitely give it a try. I'll def be back in the future, great service as well sitting at the sushi bar and good entertainment. -

Station is my total Go To place in Solana Beach. Very neighborhoody, small and cozy. The fish is almost always great and after the staff gets to know you they ply you with bottles of sake?!
Best place for caz nite out. -

I've been going to Station Sushi for too long to give it anything less than 4 stars.
I am not surprised that they average 3.5 stars. They need to pay more attention to detail. Service is usually pretty good, but I have experienced bad service in the past. Also, when they get really busy the rolls come out sloppy.
The fish does taste fresh, and that's a big selling point for me when it comes to sushi! -

Review from Tamara L.
Service alone I'd have given this place a .5 star. The "waitress" did at least bring us water. Food was maybe a 3 star. I went to their website and here on Yelp before visiting for lunch. There were some raves about the protein roll, so I figured I'd give it a try. Their website has no prices, and now I know why. The roll was $16. Are you kidding me? $16 for a roll. Is it rolled in gold flakes? (no, it isn't). The rest of their menu has in incredibly limited selection, and a separate roll menu. All of which are ridiculously overpriced. The restaurant is 1/2 inside, 1/2 outside and a sushi bar. The layout of the patio and the door opening out the wrong side is really bizarre and inconvenient. You can't fit a full grown person through it with out hitting the table and hopefully not a person if they were sitting there.
The "waitress" saw there were two of us, yet there was one menu on the table. Saw us both looking at it and went back to her doing nothing on the computer. There was one other table that was near the end of their meal, so there was no real shortage of menus. No, that's ok, I'll get my own menu, thanks. Walked up to the station and picked up a 2nd menu. Eventually came over and took our order. Very easy, a Maui Waui (not very waui) and a sushi combo, 4 pieces of fish, you pick a roll from about 4 or 5 and soup or salad. She repeated the order to us about 3 times. You got it sweetie, you sure you don't want to write it down. She asks me, you know yours comes with a roll. Yes, I do. Were you going to ask me which one I'd like? Should I write it down for you? She brings me the saddest wilted lettuce, which I only eat because I'm starving and don't know how long it will take for the rest of the order to come out.
Order comes, sushi "chef' brings it over to us. The MW roll is nothing special, at all! The sushi combo is good. We ordered it with the spicy tuna roll. Apparently here at SS, spicy tuna means, add the hottest oil or whatever ingredient they did, so you lose any and all flavor of the tuna whatsoever and taste only spicy-ness. I'm not one of those that doesn't like spicy, I love spicy but not when it overwhelms the entire flavor and you taste nothing else. I wanted some ponzu sauce but of course our "waitress" never comes to check on us, or maybe make sure our order is right, is there anything else you'd like? You know, the normal pleasantries you'd get from oh say even, Burger King. And know that at this point, there are NO OTHER customers. I have to catch her and ask for some sauce. No other interaction happens until we're done and she asks if we'd like to order more, not because she really cares if our appetite is satisfied, but because the lunch shift is over and she wants out of there. No, I think we're about done here now. . . and forever! -

Got my gyoza... that was actually really good. Then I waited another 40 minutes and never got my food. The waitress said it was coming... waited another 15... still never came. Tables that arrived after us left... and so did we.

my friends highly recommended this place. definitely worth the hype. the rolls are AMAZING. in particular, you should absolutely give the *protein roll* a try.
it's not the most formal and exquisite restaurant, and some tables are outdoor. however, i'd rather a laid back restaurant with good food than a fancy restaurant with lackluster sushi. -

La Jolla, CA
Food: 4 stars
Ambiance: 4 stars
Service: 2 stars
Overall, more like 3.5 stars. It was a very long wait between our order and food arrival (it's not like they had to cook anything). We had to remind them of our beer order, which is normally not a good sign since you would think they would want us to drink more than one.
But the wait is almost worth it. Highly recommend the Protein roll (no rice), and some of the more inventive creations. The sriracha mayo has a serious kick to it. Very generous sized rolls; you can get away with ordering one less roll than you would normally order at other restaurants. Kirin and Sopporo are available on tap.
They allow dogs in the outdoor dining area, so don't be surprised if you see pooches in their own chairs. Fun atmosphere. -

This review is about TAKE OUT ONLY. We ordered on the phone and came to pick 45 minutes later as instructed and our food had not even started! We waited another 20 minutes in the restaurant for our food. The rolls were delicious and surprisingly large but maybe next time I'll eat in the restaurant.

The protein roll is the best sushi creation... EVER.
Just try it. Seriously. There is a reason almost every reviewer here mentions it. It will be the hugest mistake of your life to ignore all these signs :)
If you are not yet convinced, maybe u will learn the lesson from my girlfriends who chose not to take my advice. They ordered something else. i let them each try one piece of my protein roll. Their face expressions were orgasmic when they put it in their mouth. Then they drooled and stared w envy as they watched me eat the rest. The rest of the night they lamented abt not listening to me and getting their own. Now they call me from las vegas and tell me stories about how they have long discussions abt how good it was and they scheme on how to get some sent to them, like overnight fed ex packed in dry ice.
Go! Get it! Now! Why are u still sitting there reading! :) -

It's very sad to see my favorite sushi spot destroy itself faster than a fly by night celebrity with a drug problem. Due to the down economy Station Sushi has changed everything that made them so special.
They now feature reduced a roll size and increased pricing on top of degraded quality - this ship has sunk. I can no longer bare the long wait for borderline quality food that is overpriced. I hope they regain their magic soon or I will never be back again.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Review from Brent S.
Encinitas, CA
So finally checked this place out today (Sunday) around 2p after I've heard from atleast a half dozen people over the past 8 months that it was good. Friend and I posted up outside on the patio on the high-tops facing the 1 Hwy and were the only ones in the restaurant or patio. We were greeted by the Korean owner lady who was on point.
Miso soup was good, as it should be, I dont think I've ever had a bad bowl of miso anywhere. Ordered the Tamago, Slippery When Wet Roll, and some Baked Salmon Roll. All 3 were GREAT and was definitely happy with a Kirin washing it down.
Learned 2 things while at Station: 1) Miso soup broth is made of dried Japanese Bonita fish. 2.) Residents of Del Mar/Solana Beach/Encinitas have some damn nice cars they like showing off on the 1 on Sunday afternoons.
Can't wait to go back! -
Review from REBECCA C.
Encinitas, CA
The place: limited seating inside (a few tables and a small sushi bar), more tables outside. The decor itself really doesn't impress. Kinda dumpy.
The drinks: Japanese beer, hot and cold sake, & wine are the options. Sorry, no full bar. Head next door to Pizza Port if you need a real beer.
Happy Hour: 5-6:30pm (not what's listed on their website). They offer several food discounts and discounted hot sake and beer.
The Service: Very attentive at first, but there seemed to be a bit of confusion between the waiters soon after our arrival. They both thought the other was helping us, when neither of them were. After 20 minutes I was finally able to flag one down to take our order.
The food: Edamame-nice sized portion, however they didn't do anything to season it up. Sushi- TRY THE PROTEIN ROLL! Yes, it's the most expensive roll on the menu (~$16), but the quantity of fish it comes with is actually a deal. This sucker will fill you up and satisfy anyone's sushi craving. We also ordered the Psychadelic Orange Crush roll. If you love fish eggs (smelt roe) you should check this roll out. They put about an inch thick layer of roe on top. Very crunchy, but overall nothing to brag about.
Even though I rated this place with only 3 stars, I'd probably go back. The protein roll really is something to check out. -
Review from Meghan L.
San Diego, CA
Our rolls were just so-so, though the Monkey Roll was yummy as usual. The other stuff didn't taste very good, just OK. I've come here twice on my own and once with my boyfriend and he agreed that it was just mediocre.
The place is tiny, so it would be good to come during a non-rush because I kept getting my chair at the bar slammed into whoever walked by me.
The happy hour generally isn't a very good deal. The happy hour menu is pretty limited in general and only has a handful of generic (read: California based rolls.) We got two rolls, one order of nigiri, sake, and a beer each and our bill was upwards of $55 or something. Normally when we do happy hour, it seems to be $15-20/ per person, so compared to other places, it wasn't really cost effective to come. -
Review from Penny Lane S.
Solana Beach, CA
LOVE this place. The happy hour is phenomenal and they are always playing fun music. Last night was a stellar mix of 80's songs and Sunday nights seem to be hip hop night. My buddy and I had the usual California rolls and shrimp tempura rolls (UH-MAY-ZING). We decided to get crazy and try the "Spandex Mafia" roll and it too was a tasty treat. If you know what the SB area is like on the weekend with all of the cyclists, you'll appreciate the name.
Can this place get any better?1 Previous Review: Show all »

Man. What a bummer! I used to be a loyal and dedicated patron to this place. Like, literally would lay down on a train track for these guys! Unfortunately, my last two experiences have been super weak. The service was pretty bad..just kind of rude and the place didn't look well run anymore. Maybe it changed hands? But I wasnt the only one to say something - my buddy said the same thing - that it was different.
Anyway - this was the second of two attempts to give it a chance - epic fail though. Saving my money to find the next hot spot! -

I gotta admit. it's been a few months since i've been here... but i have been somewhat of a regular for the past few years. The sushi quality is good and the prices are really good..
I like the new La Jolla location better myself. mostly because Kevin runs the sushi bar there and he rocks..

Review from Chelsey T.
San Rafael, CA
Station Sushi was a huge disappointment.
Our "20 minute wait" turned into an hour and a half wait. I am 8 months pregnant, and they didn't even offer a chair.
When we were finally able to order, I asked the waitress if I could have no mayo on any of my rolls, because I had severe allergies. She said it was no problem.
There were six of us ordering, and our sushi rolls came out in a 2-hour span. The waitress had no idea which roll was which, and did not offer to find out for us. None of my rolls came without the mayo, and my ONE roll that she offered to take back came out at 10:30pm, nearly three hours after we were seated.
The rolls that did come out were good-- the fish was fresh and the sauces were very flavorful. But the overall service of the restaurant was so bad that I will never go there again. EVER. -

Had lunch there on sunday. The service was good. The sushi were really good. Bill for two was like $84+tip but it was worth it. Fish was fresh and tasty, rolls were big and flavorful. The ambiance and decor could have been nicer, but it's surfer town what do ya expect????

Sushi was good, but during lunch with only 3 other tables there, our waitress brought us a plate with one roll we ordered and one roll we didn't, and took them both away.... Try apologizing and leaving them both there. By the way, she never brought the roll back that we DID order.... Bad service. It's not like it was busy...

Review from Da L.
Rancho Santa Fe, CA
So heres the deal. Some people say to optimize your dining experience you have to order the right thing, the right wine or sit at the right table. For me - a restaurant is more about the when. When do you get there - are you there through the peak of cooleness and on the right night and what do you do when you leave. In order to optimize the Station Sushi experience you need to visit about 7:30 on Thursday, Friday or Saturday night.
Now you have to lower your expectations on service. This is true of the overworked blonds that work the night shift as well as the sweet Asian lady who works the lunch shift. Get off your high horse - this is not Morten's.
Also redirect your food expectations - many of the rolls are heavily sauced with mayo based sauces. Stick with the nigiri sushi and a few light rolls - protein roll is a favorite. Real Asian sushi chefs serve up fresh basic sushi.
Focus on the beer - and the noise. On a recent date on Thursday night I sat with my new gal pal and split Ichiban after Ichiban and laughed for hours at the crazy crew surrounding us. One table was a group of 30 something guys (two wearing scrubs - vets or neurosurgeons or building Intel microchip arrays?) One guy in particular was doing imitations of the other guys girlfriends/wives! One of the wives must have walked like a chicken? Brilliant. Another table of couples talking about sex toys at high volumes and one opinionated wife exclaiming what she thought was sexy ( lubricated by some liquid courage - white wine as I recall.) Probably her second marriage. Three table of couples - two mixed gender - some tight jeans, smokin hot boots and flip flops. And all packed onto the deck in front of the restaurant mixed with others waiting for a table and the fumes from the highway 101 traffic.
Afterward we walked down to Fletcher cove. It was closed but there were more than a few couples sneaking to the water in the moonlight. Another great evening on the Cali coast. Food was ok - company was awesome and the timing was remarkable.
