So this still might be my favorite museum of all time.  I mean, it doesn't have any famous paintings or anything, but it has a history of the entire universe, a guide to poisonous mushrooms in Pennsylvania, an astonishingly detailed collection of exhibits on wetlands, a dinosaur-filled rainforest, antique autos, a planetarium, and a two-story high statue of William Penn, with a scarf jauntily tied around his neck in the wintertime.  And wetlands.

The replica of the liberty bell out front is perhaps more impressive than the actual relic in Philadelphia, and plus, you can climb on it.  The best part is that it isn't one of those snooty museums like the Louvre where you have to keep going back with your audioguide over and over for weeks just so you can see everything.  You can see the entire museum in one afternoon, and admission is totally free.  Rock on.

Excellent Museum that has all kinds of hands on exhibits that date from the Native Americans right up until the present. A copy of the Charter of Pennsylvania, a giant statue of William Penn, a native susquehannock indian village, life in the 1800's, barges, cars, plains and trains, and all kinds of geological information. information about space and the universe.

Collections can be broken down into: Archeology, Community & Domestic Life, Industry & Technology, MilitaryH, Fine Arts, Paleantology / Geology, Pop Culture, Political History, Zoology / Botany. Current Exhibits are Trailblazers and Notable African Americans in Penna. History.

also included... Dino Lab, Curiosity Connection, Planetarium (reservation only) best of all FREE ADMISSION (starting July 1st, adults pay 3 dollars, children 2 dollars). as Jeff's review states some of the exhibits are rotating, and some are permenant. Closed Mondays.

Didn't they shut this place down for "renovations" a few years back?  Why, then, are all the same sorry stuffed critters I remember from childhood still on display?  I don't believe those upper floors have changed since they built the place.

Nevertheless, if someone is coming from out of town to visit our fine city, the State Museum is a good (and FREE) stop.  The building is magnificent and the collection really does a good job telling about the Commonwealth's history and resources.  It only gets old after several visits.

Visit the planetarium with someone you love.
