The State House, and the accompanying State House grounds will keep you busy for at least a couple of hours as you look at and read the several  monuments scattered throughout.  The confederate flag flies out front, at the intersection of Main & Gervais.  I took a picture next to it, not because I support it, but because the debate over its purpose on the grounds is often in the news.

I couldn't go inside on the day that I visited, but the outside was beautiful, and full of such history; like the statue of George Washington out front, with the bottom half of his cain broken off, because union soldiers threw bricks at the statue during the civil war.

Among the monuments are a tribute to Strom Thurmond, African Americans in South Carolina, Civil War Veterans (with the controversial confederate flag still flying on statae house ground)  SC police officers, and WWII veterans.

This was actually quite enjoyable to walk through despite the blistering heat & humidity.  It was mid-July and flowers were blooming everywhere.  If tired, you can just go up to the actual capital building and lay on the stone floor to cool you down.

I remember the first time I seen the SC State House was when the Bars and Stars was flying on top of the USA Flag and the SC Flag it was a cool April night and the way it look was a sight I will never forget. It was years later I finally was able to see inside because I had some business to attend to with a SC State Representative. It was as grand as being in the US Capitol but not as large, the benches they make the elected officials sit on is small and its no wonder they make many bad laws. Lol I hope to someday get a guided tour of the whole place and hear more of the history of the place.
