Great Looking! Well Guarded today! Man and Dog Guards! We got here as they were decorating for Christmas (Huge tree - see my photos if you like).
For us this building served as a great landmark helping us navigate the city for the first time!Listed in: Recon, Day Trips, Columbia SC, Historic

Driving by to get to a restaurant, my eye was drawn to the majestic white crown of the South Carolina State Capitol. Here is where important laws are made, where deals are hammered out and where money changes hands as politicians are bribed. I'm kidding about that last part - the money goes to a Swiss account.
At night, this is a whole different den of thieves. Walking from my parked car to get a good picture of the Capitol, I kept my eye on my surroundings (lots of dark bushes and architectural black holes). I still managed to be approached by two different beggars, one of whom asked if he could hold a dollar. Uh, no.
I did not see a single police officer. I also didn't see a meter maid, but since I didn't pay the meter, this was not a bad thing.
I checked in on *cough* foursquare *cough* and it reminded me that this was my first State Capitol since visiting Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh over two years ago. What a difference! -

The State House, and the accompanying State House grounds will keep you busy for at least a couple of hours as you look at and read the several monuments scattered throughout. The confederate flag flies out front, at the intersection of Main & Gervais. I took a picture next to it, not because I support it, but because the debate over its purpose on the grounds is often in the news.
I couldn't go inside on the day that I visited, but the outside was beautiful, and full of such history; like the statue of George Washington out front, with the bottom half of his cain broken off, because union soldiers threw bricks at the statue during the civil war.
Among the monuments are a tribute to Strom Thurmond, African Americans in South Carolina, Civil War Veterans (with the controversial confederate flag still flying on statae house ground) SC police officers, and WWII veterans. -

This was actually quite enjoyable to walk through despite the blistering heat & humidity. It was mid-July and flowers were blooming everywhere. If tired, you can just go up to the actual capital building and lay on the stone floor to cool you down.
