Tucked away in a corner was this virtually empty sandwich shop with dim lighting and tired-looking sandwich-makers.
No matter, for the food was very delicious and brought out to my friend and I quite quickly. The best part was being able to create a sandwich and truly utilze my creativity (FYE: Tiny's Giant Sandwich Shop has more variety but fewer "gourmet" ingredients like filet mignon).
I ended up choosing fennel raisin semolina bread as a base, and my four fillers were crisp zucchini, delightfully mushy roasted eggplant, tart goat cheese (an extra 50 cents? Please..), and rich carmelized onions. As a "complimentary dressing," I chose the confit shallot mousse, which added a whollllle new level of sweetness and tang to the sandwich. Overall, delicious, and though relatively small, filled my stomach to just the right level of satisfaction.
One thing I must warn all future patrons about: if you want a lot of stuff on your sandwich, you're going to have to pay for it, with some options adding an extra $12 to the already expensive sandwich. Sure it's good, but be prepared to break a $50 if you get sammie-happy.
4 stars for the food. I've had the soft shell crab sandwich and it was incredible. I've also had the lobster salad and while the recommended dressing was a bit tangy, I enjoyed it. The mushrooms added a nice touch and they were generous with the lobster meat.
Negative 1 star for the price, presentation and lack of pickle or SOMETHING with my sandwich for that price! It literally came wrapped in paper and thrown in a bag. You'd think I'd at least get a pickle. :-/
I was looking for the ultimate California-style "gourmet" sandwich in Manhattan when a good friend recommended Starwich. He didn't lead me astray.
I was a little skeptical at the standard look of my open faced veggie melt, but man their special ingredients including an olive tapenade made this by far the best veggie melt I can remember eating.
This location is pretty small and sterile, but the free wi-fi and friendly servers more than make up the difference. Net net, I know there are a zillion sandwich places in NY, but this one is worth the walk.
I was not crazy about my sandwich, but the quality of ingredients was clearly very high. All of the sandwiches sound very interesting, and although I wasn't crazy about the particular one I ordered (pomegranate-juniper infused chicken - too sweet for my taste), I look forward to trying their other sandwiches.
Bumped it up to 4 stars for being right next to my office, offering seamless web, and the fantastic service!
Great bread. Good salads with creative ingredients. Try the Apple-Mango-Fig salad. Or make your own with an endive, watercress and arugula base. They don't have endive at Just Salad.
I phoned in a pick up delivery for a tasty egg which around 5 pm. It was ready when I arrived about 5 minutes later and despite the fact that they forgot to the cheese (which i didn't discover until I was back at work) it was delicious!
Maybe I don't need cheese?!!? Who are we kidding? Of course I do!
I also had a very yummy chocolate chip cookie and then felt like a pig for eating so much but it was SO good!
The restuarant itself is kind of small and dark as it is underground in the CitiGroup center - so I don't think I will be ordering in. I will definately be ordering pickup from this location again though. yum!
this is not the place for cheap sandwiches.
this is not the place for grab and go sandwiches.
this is the place for made to order, quality and therefore pricey sandwiches.
i checked in around late afternoon and the place was empty.
after looking through the rather extensive menu for a sandwich joint, i decided on the signature lobster salad, only to be disappointed when the staff said they are out of lobster.
sigh......
hang on.....he said.
he came back with some lobster after some digging around in a back room.
my brief happiness was dashed when he then said that the lobster was not fit for consumption.
from this episode i can tell that they do care about the freshness of their food.
he could have easily passed off what he found but he did the right thing and threw away the lobster as he thought it had gone bad.
well done.
so back to the drawing board.
thus i settled for their signature pomegranate-juniper glazed chicken sandwich and a cuppa latte( illy beans, no less).
i didnt quite like the high counter they had.
it prevents you from looking at their preparation process.
i was indeed slightly apprehensive about their sandwich now.
but when it arrived, it tasted great.
the bread was crispy, sweet and spicy all in one.
made from semolina-raisin-fennel.
the filling was yummy too in just the right portion.
enough bite and yet not overflowingly unmanageable.
i like them but their prices can be an obstacle to continued daily patronage.
i'm also wondering how they cope with the lunch time crowd?
the location is right at the entrance of the 53rd st metro station and it must be really heavy traffic here at lunch time.
anyway, for those who know what they want they can customise their own sandwich or salad. very flexible indeed.
delivery and catering services are also available.
i will be back here for quality sandwiches some time in the near future.
When I found out that there was a Starwich location near me, I just about slipped on my drool. Met with my girls and headed over to the Citigroup Center for my customized Starwich lunch. The summer heat fried my brain so much that I just could not decide on an appropriate salad or sandwich combo, so I got the star-tilla (a Spanish omelet) and a side salad. Still yummy. Must go back more often, but would become broke adding all the different stuff to my sandwich/salad.
