I might be tempted to give this 4 stars, but both times I have been here service has been beyond slow. The place is always packed, yes, but there is a limit to how long I should have to wait to 1. be seated, and 2. be served something as simple as pancakes.
The first time I went here was for dinner and we sat directly infront of the kitchen (not very pleasant). The wait for our food was VERY long, however I was in good company and didn't mind too much. The worst part was waiting for someone to find out waitress after we were done to get our check and leave. We were forgotten about.
The second time was for breakfast. We stood around waiting to be seated, while a party of 4 were seated and then told that they were only serving breakfast. They wanted lunch. So, instead of coming back in an hour or going somewhere else, or, god forbid, have breakfast instead.... these 4 gals decided to be extremely rude to all of us waiting for a seat (there were at least 15 people waiting patiently) and decide to have coffee and sit there until lunch was going to be served. Argh!!! They also tried to bribe their waiter into having the chef make them lunch (because they were oh-so-special).
As for the food it is decent but nothing to write home about. You certainly could go to a diner and have better service for the same quality of food.
Stars is not a diner. It just played one in the '50s.
The menu consists of a wide variety of salads, sandwiches, burgers, and you know...standard fare for a mid-sized restaurant near the water that probably should have stayed a diner. There are not enough around here anyway.
As for ambiance, everything is black and there are some TVs around the bar. It's not as morbid as it sounds but it's not a mood brightening vibe. When with good friends though, it's easy to overlook.
Service is prompt and friendly. I can give Stars that. Nicole, our waitress, was great.
Prices are average for food in the area with a few exceptions (see below). Most sandwiches/burgers fall in the $8-$12 range.
Three girls, three meals:
*Cranberry walnut chicken salad (me): way too much mayo. There had to be a jar of it on the very tiny wrap I was served (granted, it was filling). The fries left a lot to be desired. I just shouldn't have eaten them.
*Tuna melt (Nicole, not our waitress): Switcharoo! No American cheese on this bad boy and again...too much mayo. Apparently there was another jar in the place and it went to her sandwich.
*Portofino salad (Emily): WAY small for $10.25 ($6.00 was probably more appropriate) and it included a bug.
So while Stars is nothing to write home about, it's something to Yelp about. Unfortunately, it's just a 2 star Yelp.
I think that the first thing people have to realize about Stars is that it's a very laid back, casual and kid-friendly place, i.e. not the place to go if you're in a rush or are looking for a quiet meal. That being said, I also feel like it's more of a "locals" restaurant..lots of people from Hingham and Cohasset having breakfast/lunch/dinner.
The food is decent, not someplace I'd rush to go to, but it is what it is.
It's Ok,nothing great. Hard to believe its of the same family as Tosca's across their street, then again it's been a couple years since I've been to Tosca. Service was fine, just food lacks the flare you get across the street..
In their defense it is moderately priced by comparison.
Over all not bad,but not in a hurry to run back.
I'm gradually warming up to this place. The first time I went, I wasn't all that impressed. The second time I went, I thought it was pretty good. And the last time I went (yesterday), I really, really liked it. I ordered the breakfast casserole (bacon, eggs, home fries, cheese all mixed together) and the special of the day--strawberry pop "stars," which are like pop tarts but made fresh. Both items were excellent, particularly the pop stars.
The place can get loud, and it's a very family-friendly place, which means there are always lots of children there, so if you don't mind occasionally screaming and throwing of food, it's not such a bad place.
I loved this place! Only went once a week ago after a day at Nantasket Beach.... good service, good menu and fun atmosphere. Decor is a little hokey, but it works!
Fun appetizers and HUGE HUGE beers!
Another great place for the folks that own Tosca. Unlike Tosca, this is very casual, where you can bring the kids or grab a seat at the bar to enjoy one of their many, many beers.
The food goes with the atmosphere; casual fare that range from sandwiches to heavier entrees. They also serve breakfast, and have a decent sized kids' menu. The food is above average but the menu is diverse and there are some solid choices. Sticking with the sandwiches is a much safer bet than the entrees at lunch.
Location is great but waterfront would be a little misleading. Yes, you can see the Harbor but you are across the street (and very busy one at that) from the water. Parking can be an issue if you want to park at the restaurant because spaces are very limited. You are better off parking behind Tosca and walking over.
Prices are reasonable and service is usually very efficient. Gets exceptionally busy on weekends and nights so be prepared to wait if you decide to stop in during these times. Four stars because it is one of the few places around the area where kids are welcomed and you don't feel like you are bothering every other diner.
Went to Stars this weekend for the first time in years. I was disappointed - it was so much better in my memory!
I made the mistake of ordering a healthy item (Greek salad with grilled shrimp & pita). But, it was featured as a daily special so I thought that it would be great. Nope. Iceberg lettuce, the olives were plain old black olives chopped up (not Greek), tomatoes & red onions chopped beyond recognition, no pepperocini, a miniscule amount of feta and the shrimp (about 5 of them) were decent but cold (not cold as in "chilled" but cold as in sitting too long). The pita wasn't warm or special in any way. They basically oepend up a bag of store bought pita and cut it in half and put half on my plate.
My boyfriend got French onion soup and boneless Buffalo wings and he was happier than I was (although his dipping sauce was NOT blue cheese. It looked like mayo and no carrots or celery were served with it).
I noticed the burgers/fries on other people's plates looked delicious. Once again, I learned my lesson. When you're at a diner-type place, don't try to go healthy or fancy. Stick to basics like burgers and you can't go wrong.
Stars is in a nice location though and it's nice for a born & raised So. Shore girl to leave the city and venture down south once in a while. Don't go out of your way to go here but if you're in the area it's decent.
Went in this past Wednesday night with my husband and daughter. We don't normally go out to eat in this part of town, but we had a recital in the area so we figured we would give Stars a try.
We sat down, ordered sodas (which were HUGE! At least a liter in each cup) and then we ordered food... and waited... and waited... and waited. Finally we walked out hungry and annoyed after 45 minutes of no food and no sign of our waitress. We told the hostess on our way out and she at least seemed concerned that we were left sitting for so long.
Beyond that, the restaurant seemed to be completely staffed by high school students. I didn't see a single adult member of the staff in the near hour I was in the restaurant. Also, the place was full of screaming children. I really mean SCREAMING too. I'm a parent of a young child and even I was shocked by the noise level.
You may have gathered this already, but I won't be going back.
I remember Stars from my late childhood as being much better than it is now. I don't think it's a bad place, I'd definitely return, however it just wasn't as awesome as before.
I had their chicken salad wrap with green apples. It was good, definitely filling, but was ultimately a little bland. Their fries were awesome.
The lunch prices are REALLY fair.
I love the atmosphere, the laid back-ness of it lol, and the beautiful location. I will most definitely return, but maybe try something else.
I remember their wings as being AWESOME when I was younger, so maybe that's the choice I should make!
Casual, family friendly spot on Hingham Harbor that is nearly always busy. Good for a quick lunch, not a night out. The traditional offerings of sandwiches, salads, soups, and few entrees. I usually order the soup and salad or turkey club and my husband is a fan of their tuna melt. Cleanliness leaves something to be desired but perhaps this is a function of the many young children toddling about. One quirk: they don't begin serving lunch until 1:20 on Sundays (and not a minute before). Prior to that, it's a breakfast-only menu.
After much consideration I have decided that Stars is a really good place to go if you know when to go and order the right things... Not everything on the menu is stellar , but breakfast by & large is solid. The location is great in Hingham Harbor. They are kid friendly. Prices are decent. I live in Hingham so it's the local option. Don't know if I'd drive far to get here but hey, Arthur & Pats is closed all winter...a girl has to have a fallback that's closer than downtown Boston...
Still not crazy about their lunch or dinners but on occasion they surprise me and I have something really great. I think it's hard to go wrong at breakfast though...
For somewhere that has such a wide variety of international beers, it pains me to only give this place two stars. Yet, two stars it is because the food is just plain mediocre. Despite its primo near the water location, every other thing about Stars isn't very star-worthy. In fact, if it's a star at all, it's D-list right next to Kathy Griffin. We ordered fried calamari that came smothered in a "sweet & spicy" sauce that was so thick it completely obliterated any ounce of crunch. (I ate it anyway.) Then came a cuban sandwich with sweet potato fries that were bland and tasteless, even after the addition of salt (I ate that anyway too.)The menu is generally family friendly with lots of classics; this may account for why every toddler in Hingham was present this past Friday evening. Also, the portions are gigantic, so if you're a quantity over quality person it's a good bet as most peeps will be able to get more than one meal out of a dish (I ate my whole dish and in retrospect am ashamed.)
Be prepared to park and walk since the parking lot at Stars is a major joke; it does wrap around the back, but it doesn't help much because half the spaces are taken up by junior leaguers that have parked their Escalades crooked. Also, be a lover of children as any one of the multitudes of suburban rug rats will probably throw food in your direction at least once.
Went here for dinner/snacks/beers on many occasions. Usually warm summer work days where baseball was on the tv and I needed an escape. Loved the atmosphere here, the people were friendly, the views inside and out were great, and the food and beer were fun and unique. Can't wait for it to be summer again :)
Stars, a great place for an off-beat sandwich and a different beer each time. I f you manage to get a space in the parking lot (good luck...that's what they made bumpers for) you'll find a cozy atmosphere, plenty of action, and iffy service. Food's cheap, beers are big (they serve Magner's cider...yummy!) and they always have the game on. A perfect place to meet friends.
This is a pretty cool place on Hingham Harbor. It's a great place to go in the summertime. They make a GREAT turkey burger here, and they also have delicious sweet potato fries. A staple during the summer.
I ordered their "Texas Ranger" french toast with apple sausage & a side of hash browns. The french toast tasted like - NOTHING. They made it out of ordinary sliced bread and the egg didn't even soak all the way through. Absolutely no taste! What the??? Sure, price was reasonable, but not for no taste. If you want a good brunch, this is not the place. What a waste of carbs/calories. Would of been better satisfied at McDonalds, or stay at home. Don't waste your time here...
Too noisey and the service was not the best. Mistakes made on our order and then the waitress seemed to get lost. Food OK, value not best.
This casual family-friendly restaurant across the road from Hingham Harbour always seems to be busy. Stars is part of the EatWell restaurant family and is located in a renovated 1950's diner. It can be tricky getting a parking space in their small lot. I favour their breakfast/brunch menu over their dinner menu. They serve typical American Fare and comfort food in generous portions. Service can be a bit spotty as it always seems the hostesses and waitstaff are a bit frazzled.
We went to Stars with a party of 5 adults and one infant. It is a great place for children. Very good service. Casual dining - nothing fancy. The food was tasty and the portions were a good size. I'd return.
Definitely crowded, but such good food that you keep coming back. The selection is tremendous for any meal of the day. The breakfast is award-winning and they offer bakery bread from the Fire King bakery located nextdoor. The portions are huge and moderately priced for breakfast lunch and dinner. Definitely try the buffalo chicken rangoons, they are to die for! Also they serve a pretty great margurita. Drinks are resonable, service isn't always the fastest, but they offer tv's to watch the game, along with a casual dining atmosphere.
