Starlite, star bright
First star I see at Karaoke Thursday tonight
is a 50-year old man singing Billy Ocean
while swaying to the beat in a smooth grinding motion.
Too shy to sing, I lurk in the romantically lit bar
with $8 cocktails and Queens keeping me company so far.
A single rum drink multiplies by two
then three, then four, then five, who knew?
A studly bartender passes me a thick book.
The karaoke list is as massive as his biceps look.
"All first timers sing," he began to jest,
but this was just a challenge, another diva test.
My liquid courage is up as someone sings my song.
This had to be a sign...Sisqo and his Thong!
As much as I wanted to drunk sing "3" by Britney,
I shied away last minute for a classic by Whitney.
More patrons sing, and their skills are no joke.
Lordy, I need another drink but goddamn my ass is broke!
Not drunk enough to sing, but they still call my name
Excuses, excuses no more- time to play the game.
"Here's G with 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody'" says the pretty emcee.
"I forget how this song goes, so y'all help," I plead, foolishly.
It was at that moment when the song started to play
that ghosts of Starlite's Divas past possessed my vocal chord that day.
All in the pillowed lounge bounce from their seats and dance:
Young vs old boys booty-shake battling...
The tall pub tables violently rattling...
Foxes molesting my leather jacket in a trance!
Am I G, or am I Whitney? No wait, I'm just G.
Digging deep in my pockets I was reminded they were crack-free.
The song finally ends, but the applause just won't stop.
I would have done another number if my seal didn't pop.
Will I return? Maybe. Probably. Fine, it's a...YES!
Same time next Thursday would have to be my best guess.Listed in: My Humiliation Is Your…, My Tears Taste Like Salty…

So I move to Crown Heights (sorely underrepresented on Yelp) and I start walking around the new hood. And there's like eight trillion rasta veg places (fine) and a bunch of weed dealers (sure) and a Dutch dry cleaners (me: "hey what makes this place dutch?" owner: "I don't know") and a giant statue of Ulysses Grant and the Starlite.
"Hey Andy, you wanna come over?"
"No fucking way! I'm never coming to Crown Heights!"
"But Andy it's only about 15 blocks away."
"Well that's what you get for fucking moving, jerk."
"Andy, you know we only moved because Mr Mayer, the shittiest landlord in the whole universe-world, made my girlfriend cry all the time. You wouldn't want your girlfriend crying all the time would you?"
"Traitor.
And so on and so forth. A month and half later (last night) I finally get Mr Lee and Old Man Blueher and Sultry Simon to the Starlite and they have seen the goddamn lite, if you will. Besides being the oldest black-owned "non-descriminating" (read=gay) bar in the whole city, the karaoke there is delightful, the beerz are cold, everyone's friendly, and when we went across the street to chug a tall boy at the deli and the cops swerved over to harass us, all the patrons of the Starlite were very concerned for our well being.
I went back on a Saturday.
"CAN I HELP YOU GENTLEMEN? THIS IS A LIFESTYLES BAR."
I've been to my share of gay bars, and it's a good thing I already knew it was one, or I would have had no idea what the giant bouncer-man was talking about. I would have thought an S/M club or...I don't even know. I said that's fine, whatever, and he let us in. What was surprising was after we got patted down for guns or whatever and then charged $6 to get in, we didn't even get ID'd, It was fine though and the DJ played some great anthem and house music.
I love the Starlite. -

Every Thursday is Karaoke night at the Starlight. Do I know this because I've ever been there on a Thursday? Absolutely not. I know this because I live directly across the street, and can here some Whitney Houston and Marvin Gaye being belted out nearly every week--- seldom in tune. But hey, at least I get the vibe that those crazy yodellers are having a good time.
I've lived in this spot for two years and was honestly too scared to try the Starlight..... even Law and Order SVU traced some criminals back to the bar in an episode. Proud to say, I went for the first time this week. One of those weeks where it's only Monday but you need some hard alcohol----better late than never to try out the bar ten steps from mi casa.
I nearly fell off my bar stool (before I started drinking) when I spun around to find a banner proclaiming their pride in being the Oldest Black-Owned "non-discriminating" bar in the 'hood. This automatically makes it my new favorite bar, along with the sweetest bartender- Albert- whom I've agreed to come try out drink specials and give my feedback til he finds a winning concoction. My world has turned upside-down. I can now drink myself silly, and get home safely without any problems!Listed in: If You're Thirsty..., The Stuy.

I have been going to karaoke at Starlite for about a year and change now ...
I am not a person who likes to go out alone, but the crowd at Starlite is such that I NEVER felt like I was alone ... I am always greeted with hugs and warm smiles from the 'regulars'
While the Bergen location is closed, the owners are seeking another spot within the neighborhood ... FEAR NOT, WE WILL BE BACK! -

My girlfriends and I had such a good time here on Saturday night. The staff is so nice and the drinks are reasonably priced. You can find a good sized dance floor in the back room where you'll find old and young queens battling it out to a mix of r&b and house hits. Me and my friends couldn't resist showing them boys what we were working with. I think we danced for 2 hours straight.

I went to Karaoke here for the first time ever. I ran in to several people from my high school and more from my college. I had an amazing time, as did everyone else. This bar brings together the best elements of every city I have ever lived in. So basically, it's like Atlanta mixed with San Francisco in the middle of NYC. I love it.
