I like this location better than the other one a few blocks south. For starters, this one has a much better layout. There is a logical and cohesive design to the store; you order at the register, move on down to pick up your drink, etc. Also, there is some room by the hand-off plane to stand and wait until your drink is ready. It's not a huge store, but the available space is used well. The front half of the store has a lot of small tables and chairs, and even on a school day afternoon, I was able to snag a table for myself. The tabletops are made from a beautiful light wood, and you can see and feel the grain through the stain. The chairs have a stylish bent wood design but are rather uncomfortable. Contemporary square tiles cover the floor. The overall feel is very clean and modern.
While the store finishes are really nice, my experience ordering was less nice. I asked the barista at the register if they had any drip coffees besides Pike Place Roast, but I got a negative response and was offered Pike or an Americano. (Official Starbucks policy is to brew a bold coffee upon request, while acknowledging the wait time. Some stores adhere to this policy more than others.) I settled for an unsweetened iced coffee, paid, received my drink, and found a table. Overall, I was slightly annoyed that the "brew on demand" policy was not followed, but the employees were nice enough, and I enjoyed my iced coffee and my overall experience.
This coffee shop on The Ave was a nice and calm Starbucks on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Lots of seating with many two tops for spending a lunch break at. The baristas fit the vibe of the space and weren't too aggressive or overly sweet.
I scored a banana for less than a dollar and inquired about the peanut butter packets for sale I had seen at other stores. I was informed they were actually almond butter- sold for about .35 each. My maple flavored almond butter was a tasty new find and matched pretty well with my banana. My venti passion tea unsweetened was good as always.
Fyi~
* The almond butter they sell at Starbucks is the brand that is all the rage on the food blogs
*The mini packets of almond butter are sold at PCC for over $1 each
Ok ok I'm going to preface this review with the fact that, yes, I was a barista at Starbucks for 3 years. That's 2 years too long. So it goes without saying that I'm a bit of a coffee snob (I will admit it, my drinks are what can be considered as obnoxious and box-filling and YES you will remake that with fresh milk for me please with real ristretto shots). I do expect a lot from Starbucks now that I have put my time in behind the counter and know how they are expected to perform.
I know that this isn't the highest quality coffee (Peet's and Vivace mmm) but I enjoy the fact that I can customize my drink to the nth degree and not put up with a lot of snootiness when I politely ask the barista to remake my drink. PLUS they have toffee nut syrup. INSTANT STAR.
I can usually walk out the door with my drink and some tasty parfait in hand under 5 minutes and be on time for class on campus.
The baristas here are sweet and friendly, surprising for the Ave and the large amount of homeless/disturbing customers that I imagine coming here (I worked at the Westlake store downtown and have had my fair share of crazies).
Yes, I wish it was bigger. It does get cramped here with everyone coming to study and chat. But it certainly works well as a stop for students on the go and for me when my toffee nut soy latte craving strikes ;]
Its still a Starbucks, so its good for at least 1 star right?!
Definitely not as happening as its sister down the street. This starbucks is a bit out of the way and not worth the trek, especially if you have to pass Trabant & Sureshot on the way up.
Never had much luck getting homework done here. And the homeless patrons (which I understand is beyond SBUX's control) were a bit of a turnoff.
Stay at the 42nd St. SBUX or choose another coffee shop altogether.
One of the better Starbucks I've found myself standing in. Shocked at my statement? Been in many of the Ave coffee places much? It is a glittering jewel of coffee greatness compared to some of them.
It was clean and empty of losers at the time. Usually I dread going into Ave-area coffee places because I'm going to be getting screeched at by some banshee with a guitar sing-ranting about her menstrual flow, a urine-saturated junkie in my face when I'm trying to put some sugar in my coffee, or some of the local non-homeless homeless hipster panhandling for drug money. Not to even mention the Allegro business. See? I totally didn't mention it.
Yeah. Thanks for sparing me this time. I appreciate it. I just had the espresso, really cheery polite happyness, and me leaving. This is usually what I want from a coffee place, so this is likely where I will go when I'm somehow on the Ave and not meeting anyone.
It does only have a few tables, but I wasn't using them anyway. I'm sure this is intentional and I don't much mind. I have other places that I go when I want to have some worktime and none of them are in this area.
I'm not going to review the coffee/tea in this review since there are a million other starbucks reviews on Yelp - and we all know that Starbucks coffee/tea is well...crap. So I'll just review this Starbuck's location/atmosphere.
In short, this Starbucks has about five tiny tables - half of which are always occupied by bums. The rest is the same old stuff - Norah Jones on the speaker, sleep deprived staff, huge lines...
Try to avoid this one. There are many non-corporate coffee options. Don't make the same mistake I made.
Always nice and friendly staff. Space is kinda small, but not too cramped. As far as options the ave go, I would choose this place over any other any time.
