Anybody passing through Afton should visit this little chocolate shop. When I stopped by about five years ago it brought light into my life with delicious, hand-made chocolate confections that opened my once-narrow eyes about what chocolate could (and should) be. Living in Idaho I didn't know much about chocolate outside of Hershey's and See's, and I was delighted to witness such quality and creativity so close to home.
Now I've been better acquainted with good chocolate that carries names like Vosges, Godiva and Leonidas, but I think Star Valley could completely hold its own against these giants. Derek Cockshut, the store's proprietor, is a lovely man with a gentle, jovial demeanor and an Aussie accent. He'll give you a tour of the catalog of items he carries, all of which has been made on location. I bought a one-pound box of assorted confections for around $35, which I now consider a steal. Among my favorites were the key lime truffle and the dark Belgian chocolate, which was shaped in the mold of a cameo. The truffles are smooth and masterfully crafted.
Obviously, this place made an impression on me: after five years and one visit, I still remember its name and that of the owner. Anyone passing through should visit Star Valley for a taste of its country charm as well as all of the wonderful confections it has to offer.
