I totally love, love, love this place! They have the yummiest Thai food I have ever had and are so reasonably priced being in a downtown location. My favorite is the basil chicken. I don't know what they put in the sauce, but it's so tasty! It's the only place that has that certain taste - I've tried to find it elsewhere and have never found it close to how Eddie (chef and owner) makes it.
They also deliver and cater as well. I have used them for large events - the portions are very fair and again their prices are very reasonable.
They have valet parking for $6 which is cheaper than the nearby garages.
I highly recommend you try it at least once! -

Ordered the Spicy Basil and was very disappointed. It was very greasy, and it tasted like grease more than anything else. I couldn't taste the basil btu I could see basil leaves so I know it was in there. It arrived swimming in oil.
The gyoza were also greasy, but at least they were yummy. The Spicy Basil was salty, greasy and flavorless and to add insult to injury it gave me indigestion.
The previous time I ate here it was so-so at best, my friend's vegetarian Pad Thai had cubed ham in it which the waitress swore was firm tofu. Teh service was terrible, which was why I had it delivered this time. However, if I don't like the food both times I've eaten their food and the service was bad the one time I ate there... -

Really cute decor. It's exposed brick and wide japanese table style of sitting with comfy throw pillows really puts you at ease.
The drinks, thai-iced tea and vietnamese coffee are really yummmy. the food on the other hand is just decent. To be fair I haven't tried everything but the red curry (paneng?) was a little too thick and not spicy enough. The pad thai was too sweet. Overall it wasn't terrible but not great either. I would come back and give pad see ew a try but probably not the others.
Appetizers of shrimp wrapped in wonton skin was really good. Also decent selection of moderately priced wine and beerListed in: A New Yorker In Chicago...

Normally I never eat at a restaurant without consulting my beloved Yelp, but I was in a hurry and this was convenient for a quick meal. I figured, "how bad can it be? It's Thai, and it's Chicago!" Boy was I disappointed. The ONLY reason it's earning 2 stars is the semi-decent service, which at least started out good and they did bring us plenty of water. The waiters were smiling and nice to us from the time we walked in. There were lots of people there, which gave me hope that it was a popular and delicious discovery.
The food, however, was abysmal.
Starters: Tom Yum soup was oversalted and only ok in flavor, but had far too many giant chunks of lemon grass and other inedible spicing ingredients that were distracting. I kept having to pick around them to find mushrooms and chicken and onions that I could actually ingest.
Rama chicken: their supposed famous peanut sauce was served in a gelatinous glop on a barely heated broccoli and chicken pile. And we were seated under a vent (in January it was blowing cool air) which made our entrees go ice cold in minutes.
Pad Thai: wow, really should have read the reviews on this one before ordering. Soggy noodles that were for some reason pre-cut into smaller lengths, bland flavor, and served with a single lemon. We ordered the shrimp version, and they were not tasty. I was so sad because I was truly craving the taste of a good Pad Thai, and this was extremely disappointing.
Never going back for sure. -

"So there's this really cool jazz record store you gotta check out, and then when you leave there's this awesome Thai food place next door!"
That's how we discovered Star of Siam.
Great atmosphere - really neat decor, relatively quiet, clean. Service was good, but interaction was a little awkward and uncomfortable.
But the food... Really, really spectacular. I had the hot and sour soup (I can't recall the restaurant's exact name of the dish, but that's what it was). We tried several different curry dishes and they were all great. Only downside was that a large percentage of their dishes had peanuts - so if you're allergic or hate peanuts with a passion (like me), your choices are very limited.
Otherwise, I recommend this place to anyone in Chicago looking for some great Thai. -
Review from Donn M.
Downers Grove, IL
I used to eat here either dine in or carry out at least once or twice a week. Great for a college budget and large left overs if you do carry out. If you do not have an allergy to peanuts I strongly suggest to try the peanut sauce. If you come before 3 PM there is a discount on entrees. If you want to go on a date and your significant other has a taste for Thai definitely come here. The bathroom needs renovations but for some reason most Asian restaurants and stores always have bathrooms that have not been updated since 1965. (Not trying to be racist I am 50% Filipino myself) The service is always great and efficient. The crowd is very diverse. The manager always looks angry but is always nice. I will continue to go to this place when I have a taste for Thai and am in the area.

Review from Jenn G.
Not a fan. Sadly, I can't even give Star of Siam the obligatory 3-star "it's decent" because it's not.
We ordered the Singapore Noodles with shrimp, Green Curry with shrimp and the Pla Duk Pad Ped. The Singapore Noodles were ok, but there were literally 2 shrimp in the dish. The Green Curry had exactly 4 shrimp on it. It's such a pet peeve of mine when the protein is rationed so stringently on an entree. The Pla Duk Pad Ped was marginal at best.
I'd still consider myself a "beginner" at Thai food, but even with an unrefined palate, I could tell that this just wasn't very good. Some of it was too spicy to even be flavorful, and all three entrees were just unimpressive overall. I've had enough Thai food to know that there are better options out there, so I plan to go find them.
On the plus side, the food is always ready really quickly and the portion sizes are quite large.
Unfortunatley, i'm still on the hunt for my go-to local Thai place. -

Hey -
The folks here are super friendly - the place is local and easy to get to and of course super cheapy - but regular - and if you need anything spicy bring your own hot sauce these folks have turned this into a white people flavored thai shop - so don't be coming here when you have a cold and you need to knock it with some Tom Gai Kai soup (sp?)
just saying
other wise super clean super cheap - every kind of thai (in the white people sense of thai food) and really eager to please and oh yea liquor they have liquor - which is hugely hard to find in a fast food/take away sorta thai shop eh? but bonus points for having a liquor license!
the crowd is never very cute and that is "chic" cute and cute boy cute - usually lacking I think that's why my BF takes me here - -

Star of Siam could be a "four or five star" (on Yelp) establishment with a few changes:
- Most challenges at Star of Siam begin and end with service and communication. A little retraining and focus should alleviate most problems.
- Their version of Pad Thai needs to be improved. It is awful as made at present. Needless to say, that is what people will order no matter what you tell them. Then, they are inevitably disappointed. I advise against the Pad Thai at it is made now.
- The dance/techno music needs to be scrapped. Also, no commercials, particularly during the holiday season. Get an I Pad and epoxy it to the wall, like some places do, if nothing else. No, I don't know how legal that is...
- I don't know where they get their rice, but it is an inferior grade.
- Bring out some spices every time or have some on the table - fresh, that is...
Star of Siam does have promise, however. A few changes would make it an excellent choice. -
Review from Susan D.
I so wanted to love this place. I saw it on the way to Navy Pier on the bus and vowed to stop in to get some fried rice to go on the way back.
I loved the decor -- and the staff was friendly. It was an in-between time, before dinner, so I knew I'd be in and out quickly. I ordered the chicken fried rice I'd come in for and was shocked at how quickly it was brought out for me.
Excited to dig in when I got home, I was really disappointed at how it looked. It's a shame, because there was a generous portion of chicken in it. It just didn't look very fresh. It looked like "old food." Like it had sat in my fridge for several days and it was time to be thrown out. But I'd literally just brought it home and it was still warm.
Against my better judgment, I wanted to like this food so much that I ate a portion of it - giving it the benefit of the doubt. It didn't smell bad, but then again, if you have to even wonder, it's best not to eat it. I just couldn't believe that this restaurant would serve me old rice. Rice is about the cheapest food on the planet. Costs them nothing to make. So to spend $10 (that includes tip) for what is essentially rice with some chicken -- it just doesn't make sense that they couldn't be bothered to serve fresh food.
I lived to regret my decision to eat it, because it was just enough to give me food poisoning. I wound up having an upset stomach while I was out the next day. Not fun. Not fun at all. I knew it was this rice because that is all I had eaten. I had planned to have a meal when I was out, but of course, I ate nothing until I was able to get over the stomach issue. I threw the rest out, which was more than 1/2 of it.
I had a hunch that this rice was not freshly prepared. That could be why it was served so quickly -- far too quickly - to be fresh. I know there are some fast chefs and it doesn't take long to prepare Asian cuisine, but this just didn't seem right.
Based on that experience, I can't take a chance at this restaurant again - for anything. -

I rarely eat Thai food but decided to order carryout from this resturant because it was close to my hotel. I made a great choice because not only was the food was delicious, but the prices were reasonable. I had the green curry beef which was flavorful, spicy hot and not sweet. I also had the singapore rice noodles which while less flavorful, skimpy on the shrimp and squid, was full of perfectly cooked veggies.
Also the restaurant was pretty crowded with several groups waiting outside to be seated. I would think that's a good sign! -
Review from Rits M.
great food here! I personally really like their crab rangoons. Also love the location, there's tons of different kinds of people who come in. The place is also really good for people watching, thanks to its location and huge window which I like sitting by.
The food is good- I would say that although its kind of stereotypical, its fresh and well prepared. Best to go there when you want to grab a quick lunch. $15 each for 2 people, with 2 entrees and an appetizer. Oh and there's plenty of food to take home as well. -

Delicious thai food, some of the best I've had in the city. The curries are really phenomenal. Not too crazy about the spring roll that comes wrapped in a thick rice paper and smothered with super sweet fake plum sauce. Besides that you can't really go wrong with ordering anything from their menu.
Service can be spotty, especially when they are really busy. They can forget about your table so if you need something, make sure to keep an eye out for your waiter or waitress as they buzz around the floor. It might take them some time to check on you. -
Review from Mikey J.
Overall, not bad. I've driven or walked by this place many times, and finally hit the spot up this Friday evening with some friends. The service is friendly and food comes out QUICK (less than 5 minutes quick).
The food itself was... okay. I had the chicken supreme with brown rice as a side and the chicken came out quite dry. Not the best Thai food I've had (in Chicago, RUBY of Siam is up there), but not the worst. Give it a try, as it sure beats out Dao Thai. -
Review from Mike M.
not great. ok, but not great.
the bloody mary was truly gross.
the broccoli beef was decent. better than ok. the beef, however, was tough.
the restaurant is crowded.
the appetizers are awesome though. rangoon and veggie egg rolls really were the tops. order appetizers and nothing else. oh, and only drinks that come from a bottle, not that have to be mixed. -

I went here on a Wednesday night a week ago and bottom line is their RUDE AS HELL! who the hell has a broken down credit card machine at a restaurant and then tries to rush your party out because its busy and people are waiting in line? WELL WHOSE FAULT IS THAT???? STAR OF SIAM ur lucky I even had some cash on me...! usually I don't carry cash at all...and I know plenty of people who don't
This is my first review on here and I just felt compelled to write one due to their incompetent ability to take care of their patrons when things go awry. It was my best friends birthday that night and who would have thought a Wednesday night would be busy? Food is great, good prices, great ambiance, our waitress was super nice, cheap drinks and quite awesome martinis btw and cheap ($8) but the dudes , who i guess were the ones who handled the checks/registers, were rudeeeee!!.
The check came out to be like 78-79 dollars or something and we only had 67 bucks and i told him to put the rest on my credit card...and the guy literally came to our table in a stressful rushed loud annoyed panic fob voice and was like our credit card machine is down there is a 7/11 around the corner you can go to the ATM there and get cash. Our party was like 12 bucks short and I wouldn't have minded going to the ATM to get the rest of the money....but the fact that another man came back EVERY 30 seconds literally to check up on us like we were gonna dine and dash and leave without paying them the rest of the cash w the tip and starred at us in an annoyed way like WE DID SOMETHING WRONG was just wack....
I know you have a line....I know you want us to leave so another party could sit in our six seats but DAMNNNNN... the one that should be annoyed is me cuz your cc machine is down and now your gonna make me walk to get the money. wtf is your problem. AT least have the decency not to rush us out. whose god damn fault is it. your's !! if u wanted us to get the money faster your ass should have comp'ed something.
A real restaurant with good service would have handled this situation better and im normally an excellent tipper (i use to work at a restaurant when I was younger, so I know how it feels to get shitty tip) but least to say I tipped their ass less than 15%! I'm never coming back here again. :) that is all. -

My go to Thai place.
It's hard to explain why I like this place so much. It's like that worn leather jacket that you pull out every fall. It's not your fanciest jacket, it's certainly not your newest jacket, but it fits with a warm comfortable familiarity that reminds you of all the good times you have had
I have been going to this Thai place since I arrived in Chicago in 1985. To be honest the food is good Thai, but I have had better, rarely.
It's a staple. The food is always good, the service is always good and the food is very reasonable. So it gets 5 stars.
When I moved back to Chicago after 7 years, this was the first place I went to.
For those of you who find it bland. Tell them you want it spicy. Or heck, just tell them how you like it. They have always been accommodating. -

The pad thai was exceptionally good and everything else was exceptionally okay. Their papaya salad definitely tasted of some fish sauce or oyster sauce even though i requested vegetarian.
The fried tofu and egg roll were average okay. delivery was quick. -
Review from Hema K.
Searched for thai restos in downtown Chitown and listed Star of Siam on the first place.. Around 8pm it was super busy and somehow managed to get tables for the three of us. Found it weird when the waitress explained on adding spiciness to the food.
Me: Can you make the pad kee mao medium spicy?
W: We'll prepare the food and you can add how much hot sauce/chilly flakes you want.
Me: Why so?
W: These cooks are mexican and do not know how to prepare thai food with the right amount of flavor.
Me: ~puzzled~ just prepare whatever however.
Why would someone comment negatively about their own resto the way they operate.. They should prepare the food however I want it to be instead of explaining the race/background of the cook.
Indeed when the food arrived, it was not spicy and lacked flavor. Moreover the waitress was confusing us while ordering when it came to specifying level of spiciness. Another huge drawback is that the restroom faces the kitchen where they handover the food to stuff :( didn't knew about it until we asked about the restroom.. it was really gross the way food is being served. Wonder if they passed inspection ?!?
Good for those who prefer mild-tasting thai food. Prices are reasonable.. easy to get staff's attention. Although I wouldn't recommend this place.Listed in: SaWatDee

Star of Siam is excellent. I have ate in the restaurant and last night I ordered take out. Both times were equally as pleasing.
Let me say first, since I have moved to Chicago I have ordered take out Asian food from many places on Grub Hub and been very very disappointed every time. Star of Siam has a new permanent customer. Also, every time I walk by the place is packed with guests, any day of the week.
My order is simple, Shrimp fried rice. The portion is huge and for only $7.95. Both times I have made two meals out of it. -

I don't eat alot of Thai and discovered I have a very low tolerance for spicy food.
I ordered the Chicken and Broccoli with peanut sauce - this was very good.
I sampled a dish my friend was literally devouring. She said try it its not too spicy, I eat jalepenos so I thought I would try it. Not a good idea - it felt like I burned the entire inside of my mouth. Not sure what shade of red I turned but the waitress came straight over and asked if I would like rice as it was too hot for me. She was spot on. She brought me a bowl of white rice (with a chuckle).
That aside it was a good experience and my friend did love the dish and said it was one of the best she's ever had. -

I love this place.
Nice warm staff and pretty christmas decroation. Tasty tom yum soup with perfect spcies
You have to try their beef fried rice, I usually don't order fried rice( greasy and some place use left over rice), But this place, with tender, juicy beef, and good rice, VERY tasty. My favourite thai place -

I'm not sure what the deal is with the negative reviews. This place is great people! The food is delicious and they make a mean Leycee Martini. Also it's a great deal for dinner in the area, and is one of my go-to places for take out. Try the Kang Karee Kai or if you are a fan of peanut butter the Panang Nue, both are fantastic!

I'm torn on giving Star of Siam 3 stars. Maybe it should be 4? My indecision lies in that I'm not sure what to compare it to.
Star of Siam is a solid Thai choice, particularly for lunch if you work in the area. The service is extremely fast and the food is definitely good. It just isn't one of my favorites for Thai in all of Chicago. So, compared to other Thai restaurants, I would cap this one out at 3.5 stars.
That said, you can get a sit down, quality lunch with tip at Star of Siam for the price of a sandwich, soda and cookie at Corner Bakery, with no more time spent on the ordering, waiting and eating at the former than the latter. So compared to other similarly priced lunch options near Michigan Ave., you can't do much better.
If you're in the area and feel like Thai, you won't be upset you tried Star of Siam. -

Long time patrons of this restaurant, so felt it appropriate to put my stars where we've so often put our mouths...
Curries are excellent, noodles naughty, and martinis marvelous (in fact I'll be savoring one later tonight).
$6.00 for valet seals the deal - you can barely park (legally, anyway) downtown for so little... -

Wow - this place was the highlight of a late night at the office. Stuck at work as 9PM rolled around, I began scouring Yelp for a decent meal nearby. My (local) colleague gave a big thumbs-up for Star of Siam, and I decided to give it a go.
Shrimp fried Wontons? Order them! Get two! The gyoza were a little underwhelming and soggy, while the spring roll was innovative but not my speed, but then again, it wasn't for me. The rama chicken though? Great! If you don't have a peanut allergy (or do but want to die happy), order the jasmine rice and a side of super-creamy peanut sauce to complement it. The thai ice tea was a little tart at first, but it was actually helpful since as the ice melted it balanced out properly. The plethora of sauces that came with the meal was a little bewildering but made everyone happy.
Delivery was fast and friendly, and this is now on my list for a place to go in Chicago when I don't want to eat a quarter of a cow. -

This place and Dao Thai are exactly the same. Which is weird, because they're about 5 blocks from each other. The only thing different on the menu is the name of the restaurant.
Anyways, I've eaten here a few times and while it was my favorite place a year ago...thats changed. I had it again recently and it was meh. Maybe it was because it was delivered, but it tasted really bland and it seemed like nothing had any flavor, not even the peanut sauce.
I've only tried a few things on their menu. The chicken fried rice, the chicken pad see ew and the chicken pad thai. Usually, the first two are decent and not too greasy and the pad thai is alright, but sometimes it's disgustingly sweet. They use all white meat chicken in their dishes, with a appreciate. -

My first ever Thai food experience. Ever since I was a kid we have come downtown to the Star to celebrate after graduations, piano recitals, sports victories, and other significant events.
The food is incredible: pad thai, fried rice, egg rolls, satay, various curries (panang is my favorite), beef, shrimp, and much more. The Thai iced coffee is killer.
Love the ambiance. This is an excellent, excellent restaurant. -

Large portions and cuter decor than I expected from the outside!!! My friends and I came upon this place and it was bustling at about noon on a Thursday during the lunch hour. We still got seated right away nonetheless. We had the pad see ew, the chicken satay, curry chicken rice, and the coconut-lemongrass soup (Thom Ka Gai). I recommend this place for good portions and good prices! Our bill came to about $31 for the three of us and our order could have fed one more. Great, attentive and gracious staff. They deliver.

I ordered the chicken and broccoli in peanut sauce, chicken satay, and cucumber salad. The main dish tasted like chicken breast made in a george foreman grill (with no seasoning) and the blandest, most generic peanut sauce ever. I was so disappointed. I've never had Thai food this bad before. The chicken satay wasn't bland but was actually nasty. I've had bland chicken before but never nasty chicken. The cucumber salad was OK.
I will never eat here again. -

I really wanted to like this place! So much so, that I gave it 3 chances even though it didn't deserve that many. It really didn't even deserve a 2nd chance but my friend insisted it was good so I tried it again and then for my last time I got takeout.
I have tried the ginger chicken, cashew chicken, pad thai, some sort of beef, chicken with peanut sauce and the crab rangoon. The only thing I enjoyed was the crab rangoon. All the dishes were so bland. I couldn't even finish my takeout last night, especially the overcooked, nasty beef dish.
I gave them one extra star because service has always been great and I like the little cushion benches at the restaurant. But I will not be eating here anymore. -

Uh, wow. I guess they were just slacking on new years eve because this is quite possibly the worst Thai food I've ever had. We ordered the crazy spicy noodles , the potstickers, and the stir fried eggplant when we were staying at the swissotel. The potstickers were standard greasy " bad Chinese restaurant " fare, though edible. The eggplant was a bit mushy, and also had a bit of grit, but the flavor was palatable. The biggest disappointment were the crazy spicy noodles...this is an Asian restaurant, right? Where I'm from ( dc) asian restaurants can't mess up noodles. However, star of Siam found a way to make noodles completely disgusting ! First, the noodles were completely overcooked and mushy. The vegetables were even cooked to a mush. Secondly, it was like someone accidentally dumped a whole bottle of fish sauce into the dish. It stunk! In the end, we had a doughy, stinky mass of what should have been a yummy noodle dish. I don't know if we got substandard food because we were tourists or what but I will never order from here again.

I've been a fan of Star of Siam for many years and the quality of food has never changed. Love the pad thai, pad see eiw, and the star's chicken delight- all must haves. My boyfriend highly recommends of all their currys, he never gets anything else. The decor is very nice, convenient location (and they deliver almost anywhere), and you can't beat the prices- very reasonable for the location and proximity to all the expensive restaurants downtown.

My favorite Thai place in the city, a great, affordable restaurant.
I really like that they have great ambiance and decorations because most Thai places I've been to have none.
I've tried a bunch of things there and the ONLY thing I didn't love was the Beef Green Curry.
And To Whom It May Concern:
Please don't get the Pad Thai for the zillionth time... try something new for God's sakes -

I love this Thai place for its reasonable prices at a downtown location. The comfy seats make it a great place to relax and eat yummy food!
One note would be not to get the crab rangoons; they were basically fried bread. -

This is a great River North option for affordable Thai food, minus the annoyance of bustling shopping crowds and stuffy office workers.
After about 13 years or so of visiting this place, I've ALWAYS received fast and friendly service, tasty food and have experienced a very comfortable and clean atmosphere. It's wonderfully tucked behind the AMA building and shares the building with the Chicago Reader alternative newspaper. -
