I'm a fan!
My friend held her farewell big party at Star of Siam, we have a private room at their basement and it was awesome! It's so roomy and clean, I like those cool decor on the wall a lot. We did buffet style as we had Curry chicken, spring rolls, veggies with beef, pad Thai...just so many food and they are all good! My Thai friend told me their food is very good, since she is Thai so she know hows the authentic Thai food looks like, if not she wouldn't re comment to us!
If you dun want to struggle with the parking then just pay 6 dollars they will valet for you, it's a good deal! Restaurant is nice and it was packed!
Yes, after the dinner I think what she said was very true!
I'm a little biased due to the fact of working so close, and that we have a house account with them, but SOS is a standard.
Coming close to having everything on the menu, there's a good amount of options to choose from. It's a fun place for groups to order up and share. Although all has a little oil to it, it's full of flavor. The Nom Tok is full of beef, wonderful cilantro and tasty onions. Their Pad Thai, always a great mixer. Spicy Basil chicken will keep you wanting more, all while getting you a little warmed up. Crab Rangoon is cheese delicious.
The secret to this place is their bar...order the Zombie. It's well worth the shock of the waiters, the time it takes for the bartender to figure out and amount of fruit on top. Order 2, and get ready for some fun.
As long as I'm in Chicago, I'll be eating at Star.
I have ordered soup from this place about 5 times now, and every time I ask myself "Why? Why are you ordering this bland chicken broth soup again?"
Answer: "Because you are sick/hungover, it is the cheapest dish on the menu of the only reasonably priced Thai restaurant in the area, it is big, hot, and right next door to your work."
What soups have I tried?
They do basically four variations on the same bland chicken broth soup- beef noodle soup, chicken noodle soup, shrimp wonton soup, and Ba Mee Nam (i.e., chicken with ramen noodles). Far be these from being the most adventurous items on the menu, they ARE still part of the menu...
As I said, the broth is plain and bland, with seemingly nothing that is "Thai" or even Pan-Asian about it. The only vegetables are sprouts (not my favorite) and big chunks of sliced raw celery. Oh, and a few sparsely applied pieces of green onion and cilantro. this soup could benefit not only from a broth that didn't taste like it came out of a can, but also from some bok choy, Chinese broccoli, or say, sliced onions. I basically have to douse it in soy sauce and hot sauce to begin tasting something. I still don't understand the rationale behind the fucking celery.
And the chicken: Upon eating it this afternoon I was a little annoyed that I had not ordered one of the dishes with sauce (where the chicken might have had flavor), because there was a ton of chicken. So much so that I had to throw a few pieces out after finishing the broth.
And the beef: Disgusting- huge chunks of practically inedible grisly beef (due to the fattiness) that did not taste like they belonged in the can-tasting broth.
The wontons- As a wonton fanatic, I can say that one thing that makes a horrible wonton is an overcooked, flimsy, slippery noodle that practically disintegrates upon hitting your tongue. These noodles were of that variety. I don't remember what the filling was like, but it was obviously not noteworthy.
So what is my final take on Star of Siam? Well, I haven't tried the "real Thai" dishes, so I have to give them the benefit of the doubt, but one thing I can say is that one should never order any of the four soups I mentioned. They are not bad so much as they are a bland, waste of a meal.
I am making a New Year's resolution: No soup for me! (At least not from Star of Siam).
If you're looking for an affordable, yet damn-tasty lunch food, Star of Siam is absolutely a place to consider, assuming it makes geographical sense.
All of their entrees run b/w $6-$8 and all of the ones I've had (pad prik, cashew chicken, spicy noodles, pad thai, probably more I can't remember) are totally worth it. I had the pad prik today for lunch and then some leftovers for a late night snack and both times my sensory system was in heaven.
When I worked closer, I was a frequent dine-in luncher. But distance hasn't stopped me -- they deliver. And very reasonably-priced delivery: $2.50 flat charge in the loop. From the second I called to place my order, to the moment I met the delivery dude in my lobby, I was met with friendly, professional service. That goes a long way (are you listening, you Dining In losers?).
So do yourself a favor and give this place a try. For what it is -- a quick, affordable neighborhood Thai place --- it really is fabulous and I have yet to find better around downtown Chicago.
We went here on on Christmas Eve, so one star for being open!
We ordered the mixed fried tempura (not so Thai... but always good, cuz' it's fried!). It was pretty good... the batter was light, sauce was tasty.
Lychee martini is highly recommendable. I loved every drop, and it came with 3 lychees as a garnish.
My panang curry was pretty intensely spicy, I was schvitzing the entire time, but it was good. Not great, but good. I like a little more basil, or herb to my curry, the peanut was pretty intense.
I also sampled some green curry, that was pretty good as well.
Overall.. would come back but it isn't my favorite thai place ever.
I can't speak for most of the menu, because when I come here, I'm generally a man on a mission. The Tom Yum here is one of the best I've had in Chicago, and it is a cure-all to boot: hangovers, common colds and the midday blahs are no match for this piquant bowl of goodness. Ask for it spicy, it will come out a fiery shade of red, with all the chilies your tongue desires. At $6.75, you won't be doing any damage to your wallet; and the atmosphere is a step above your average Thai spot in town. That said, somewhat ambiguously, the piped music is a strange mix of gay camp classics: early Madonna, Heart, Cher and Cyndi Lauper... it makes for a bizarre but entertaining juxtaposition. Service can occasionally be linguistically challenged, but no less eager to please.
I've never had a bad experience here. It's good cheap thai food in an area where you never find those first two adjectives together. I can't be too specific about the menu because I'm not sure I've ever branched out beyond the pad thai, but I've been here with others who have and they still hold the place in high regard. It's cute and charming looking without being too extravagant. And I always get in and out of here quickly with no issues, which is again unique for River North.
So yesterday I came in after not eating from here in the longest. I thought to myself what brought me back here from my last experience. The place was empty and it literally took 20mins for a waiter/waitress came to ask me for my drink order. I ordered an appetizer Crab Rangoon which was okay. Then came my Pad Thai which was very bland and flavorless. I asked for a side of peanut sauce to add flavor to my very bland Pad Thai. Since the big round tray of condiments was not brought to me. Then they had the nerve to charge me 2.00 for the side of peanut sauce which surprised me that they charge for that. The decor was decent that is why they get the 2stars. I would not venture back to this place it isn't worth it.
I am on a quest to find GREAT Thai food in Chicago. So far I have been unsuccessful partly because the Thai food in my previous neighborhood (Lakeview) were so trendy and 'fusion'.
AND THEN-- I had been to Star of Siam before, but it did not impress me (I ordered pad thai and its nothing special but not bad either. Solid, I'd say)
However, what really prompted me to write this review is my 2nd visit to Star of Siam where I asked for the Lard Nar noodles. I was literally surprised. shocked.
All of my the Lard Nar noodles I have had in the United States looked NOTHING and tasted nothing like the one I get at home (Malaysia). So then I was like, maybe the Malaysians got it wrong? Maybe it was more of a Malaysianized Thai dish (which happens a lot because we borrow each other's cuisines and sometimes change them)
So I was taken by surprise (pleasantly) when I was served the 'Malaysian' version of Lard Nar, that I have not had in a while. The sauce/gravy is just so tasty and it has the right spices and viscosity that I missed so much.
My friends ordered fish entree and it was waaay spicy (to a Malaysian, this is an indicator of a real Thai cook in the kitchen)
The prices are so reasonable too.
Especially if you are in this neighborhood and you're wondering where to go eat, you don't want fast food, or Chillis, or spend more than $20.
I will definitely be back to try more things on their menu.
My boyfriend and I love this place and delivery is a weekly event! For the cheap prices and high quality ingredients, this is my top choice for delivery Thai in the city. I will say, not every dish is great. My favorite is the Pad See Eiw (if you don't love garlic get the pad thai). Other greats are the panang nue, stars chicken delight, and the mild curry chicken.
The restaurant is nice to eat at, but the service can be slow. They have a full bar with a lot of fun cocktails and a nicely decorated place. I enjoy taking large groups here for a cheap dinner with a lot of options to try!
Good fast Thai at very reasonable prices. Make sure they leave you the condiments bin full of ground peanuts, jalapenos and chili pepper sauce.
Can fill up at lunch, but they always manage to keep it moving.
This is probably my favorite Thai place in the city when I'm looking for something other than take out.
The atmosphere in here is just too cool for school. It's very industrial and feels like a loft, yet the asian decor adds so much more to the ambiance. I love sitting in center section of the restaurant where the tables are basically in holes and you sit on pads. It adds just that extra touch to the experience.
The food is fan-frickin-tastic too which is why we go there in the first place... So good and fairly reasonable in price.
Cute Decor! When we walked in it was not crowded and it felt totally relaxing. Our waitress so accommodating and super sweet!
Chicken and Vegetable Pot stickers were very tasty
and I loved the passion green tea.
I had the ginger chicken. I thought it was good but I felt it was missing some spiciness to it. Maybe I will tell them to add some peppers other than that it was a great experience. My friend had the Chicken and Rice Soup and she said it was just what she needed for such a cold and crappy day in Chicago.
so this review is not based solely on the food. my fiance and I got a voucher for a free dinner plus drinks for the both of us - a perk she got for having them cater lunch at her firm.
i ordered the Sabai Sabai martini and she ordered the Pomegranate martini. Mine was incredible - the Thai rum in it is real different, sweet, and distinct. The gyoza app was fantastic with an amazing sweet and sour sauce - the best. We ordered the Mussaman curry and the panang nue. I love mussaman curry, and they do this dish really well; however, they very obviously switched my heat level, medium, with her heat level, mild - no big deal, we just switched our entrees.
However, before we ever got our entrees, the owner had greeted us and told us we order too little food. We told him we would eat anything he recommended, and he brought also brought us tempera shrimp. The shrimp wasn't amazing like the gyoza but still nice and light.
After getting halfway through our meal, the owner came to the table again, and asked if we wanted to try the cucumber salad. I'm a big cucumber salad fan, and when I usually get it, the cucumber slices are too thick and the vinaigrette is disappointing. Only one other Thai place does it great - Bamee on Broadway, but their cucumber salad is as good or better.
At this point, my fiance and I are pretty full, having only been able to finish half our entrees. We had the waiter wrap up what was left, and he brought over the bill. The owner then returned to our table, and offered us more martinis - at which we declined, even though, I was itching for another Sabai Sabai. He asked if we would like dessert, and again we left the choice of dessert up to him. The waiter brought out an unappetizing flan-looking custard with a scoop of coconut ice cream. Being scared, my fiance let me try it first, and when I tried it, I was surprised by how awesome the custard was. It had the color of raw uncooked shrimp, but holy crap was this custard incredible. Probably the best part of the meal.
To top it off, the owner was nice of us to give us back the free voucher and told us to come back and use it again! Niiiiiice! They even comp'd our valet.
So Star of Siam gets 5 stars b/c they're food is great, and their giving nature is even better. Thanks again to them, and we will be back soon.
For years, I've thought of Star of Siam as a 'Good Thai Restaurant,' but I have to say that my recent experiences there have me searching my memory, trying to figure out where I got that impression.
I think it's a gorgeous space. The location has the charm of a hidden treasure, and the low-set tables, wooden beams and authentic decorations all make for an inviting setting. What's more, the smells of the spices that greet you at the door are so delectable, your mouth begins watering as soon as you cross the threshold.
But here's the kicker: while it all smells good, it doesn't really taste that good. Start with the pad-thai, always a good litmus test for a quality Thai restaurant. At Star of Siam, it's pretty much just a plate of noodles and sauce. There's not much in the way of meat, veggies, sprouts to vary the texture--and that sauce is sugar, sugar, sugar. It's a solid C, B- at best.
The last time I went, I ordered the pepper chicken and one of their specialty martinis. What I got was a plate of dry meat chunks and (what has to be) a glass of Windex. That was enough to jump start my search for better downtown Thai. I'll let you know what I find.
I was introduced to Star of Siam about 11 years ago, and when I moved back to Chicago, I was glad to see that it's still there.
Located in River North, Star of Siam is a hidden secret in Chicago...and mostly because of its location. It is tucked away in a building not too far west of Michigan avenue. Sneeze and you may miss it.
Once you have located the place, then the fun begins. Start out with a Lychee Martini. Now I must say I am a BIG fan of lychee, which is definitely not for everyone for one reason...the canned syrup (due to pasteurization) can have an interesting smell to it. However, at Star of Siam, they make it with FRESH Lychee juice...which makes it exquisite and refreshing.
The decor of this place is a bit more upscale than most Thai places. a lot of the tables in the middle of the dining room are set in these pits where you sit on a pillow, simulating a traditional setting. Although it's creative, because you do not have a back to your seating, your back may be strained a little.
The food is very good. The spring rolls are excellent. And I love the duck.
Definitely a place worth checking out!
Pretty good, still a bit partial to a few other places but this place satisfied me. Came here after going to a movie at the AMC River East, it's a short walk down Illinois just before State Street. I was with some friends so we decided to get three dishes and split them amongst ourselves. I ordered the Massaman curry (they spell it Mussaman here for some reason), which has become my favorite Thai dish, while my friends ordered the Pad Thai and the "Nue Nam Mun Hoy" (Oyster Beef #10).
The Oyster Beef was very tasty, but it seems more like something I'd expect to find in a Chinese restaurant (I'm guessing this isn't a thai dish). The Pad Thai was pretty much standard as far as Pad Thai goes, still good though. The Massaman Curry was quite good, however I found the curry to be less creamy and more spicy than what I'm used it, I think I need to taste it again to give it a final verdict. Overall worth a go if you're hungry after a show don't mind walking past PJ Clarkes.
best pad thai in the city!!
its cheap and delicious!
There's not too much vegan food in the Loop, but my friend and I gave Star of Siam a shot one evening. The atmosphere is kind of nice and cozy and the service was fairly prompt and friendly.
That said, the food was terrible. The fried tofu appetizer was chewy; clearly the tofu had been fried hours ago and had been left around to sit under a heat lamp for a while. The egg rolls were okay, but a bit greasy for my likes.
The main dishes were the worst offenders. My pad prik (chili stir fry) looked nice, especially the way they cut the bamboo shoots to look like noodles, but the dish had no flavor. There was lots of oil, but no taste and I had to douse the dish with soy sauce to make it barely worth eating.
Similarly, the pad kraw pao (basil stir fry) was watery and flavorless. They put way too much tomato in the dish (why did they put tomato at all? it's not commonly used in Thai cooking), which sucked out the flavor, and the tofu was barely cooked.
The only plus point: they offer brown rice for an additional $1 or so.
Go to Pho's Thai in Lakeview or Dharma Garden on Irving Park instead, as this place has nothing going for it.
The Star of Siam sits along a dimly lit street illuminated by its flickering pink and green neon sign. You can actually see it from Michigan Ave and it's the perfect breakaway from the hustle and bustle of the Magnificent Mile.
The interior of the Star was tastefully decorated with perfect lighting. A great setting for a group meal (community seating available) or a romantic dinner date. The community tables are in the center of the room and are bordered by low bench seating with fluffy cushions.
I started with the French Martini (Vodka, Chambord, and Pineapple Juice) and was blown away by its presentation and found a liking to its potency. The cocktail was shaken, served with a frothy top, wedge of Honeydew, and a Strawberry Mint garnish. I am now a huge fan of the French Martini thanks to Star. For starters, I ordered the shrimp rolls, which seemed to lack any sight or taste of shrimp. Not bad, just not what I was expecting. For Dinner I ordered the #19, Kang Kheaw Wan Nue (mild yellow curry w/ chicken and peas) and was very satisfied with the serving and balance of flavors. I tend to shy away from the full bodied curries so the mild was just the right earthy and spiciness I enjoy. So all in all, it was a very good meal and I'll surly pay another visit the next time I'm in town.
my take out experience:
me: excuse me, that girl and i ordered the same thing, and she received her food before mine.
employee: ok, jeez, calm down! here, i'll give you some dumplings.
(hmm... what is this? an attempt to win back my business after just telling me to take a chill pill? you can't fool me with your bland dough-encased pieces of crap)
any further description of this place would just be a waste of time
This is my go-to lunch spot when I'm craving something with some spice. The menu is extensive, but usually I order the #20, which is a mild chicken curry. Be careful if you order the the tom yum soup - it's a very large portion, and although delicious, it has large chunks of ginger. Sometimes I order the satay, which comes in chicken and/or beef.
The restaurant also has some funky bench seating for larger groups, which I like. Star of Siam is a gem.
We experienced Star of Siam as part of the Thai discount month. The food was okay, but I have had better, much better, in the area.
There is little or no parking in the area but the valet is a decent bargain at $6.00. The restaurant is LOUD. The bar is located right inside the door and had an odd assortment of pencils and things that would normally be kept behind the scenes in an office.
Some of the seating was inside a pit on big, cushy ottomans. We had a table. It was a little tacky, like it had not been cleaned very well and no table cloth or place mat were provided.
The food was okay. We had chicken, shrimp and beef dishes. The food could have been hotter in temperature.
Service was lackadaisical as if they wanted to hurry us out.
I think there are much better choices in the city and suburbs for Thai food.
This is my office's favorite takeout place. They're usually fast and the food is consistently good. Work downtown and can't get out of the office? Then send out an SOS
This is only a review of their Pad Thai, as it's the only thing I've gotten so far.
When I got my food, I was happy because it looked like it was going to be good. All the requisite parts were there-noodles, eggs, peanuts, and it even had some sprouts, which I love. I didn't need to eat much to see just how much this dish was lacking. The only flavor I encountered at all was whatever spice they use in their sauce. I couldn't taste noodles or eggs at all. Just spice. For me, I feel like it totally ruins the dish. I'm not talking about the extra spicy stuff they added after, but the sauce it was cooked with. There was absolutely no flavor at all and I was very disappointed. I'll try something else at some point, but I'll stick with my usual place for pad thai.
Pretty unimpressed with Star of Siam. Went for a work lunch - and I'll probably go back as it's so convenient, and it was cheap....
but you get what you pay for. Firstly, the food comes WAY too quickly.... fast service is one thing, having dishes ready-cooked, as I suspect, is another. My pad thai tasted ok, but neither very authentic nor very fresh. and completely agree about lemon instead of lime - so wrong! One of my shrimp was burnt, and none were terribly shrimpy-delicious (a special kind of delicious). The rice was in no-rice-land between sticky and crispy. Everyone else's dishes got the thumbs up, but if I'm craving proper Thai food, I think I'll find somewhere else and save this place for a rice-noodle-chilli-fish-sauce emergency (these occur more frequently than you'd think).
Best Thai I've ever had. You have to get the Tom Yum Soup! A huge huge serving, more than enough for two people! And I always get the Pad Thai with tofu and chicken! Delish. I can't stop eating it! I crave this place!
This is mine and my boyfriend's go-to place. I always compare other Thai places to this one. Even the decor is great, more traditional than all these modern places popping up.
I've never actually been *in* to this place, so I can't say what the dine-in experience is like (if I do, I might have to adjust the star rating either up or down). However, I've gotten food delivered to our office quite a few times from Star of Siam and it has always arrived well within an hour, always been hot, always been flavourful. I always end up getting the same 2 things - chicken noodle soup (which doesn't sound too exciting, but is REALLY GOOD) and plain old chicken fried rice. This is my favorite place to get fried rice and I'm always craving Star of Siam fried rice..
I really like Star of Siam because it's relatively inexpensive, the food is just what I expect....yummy :) and the service is good.
My favorite dish is Rama Tofu (Rama Chicken, minus the chicken, add tofu). The peanut sauce comes out a little thick on top and watery underneath the broccoli but it seems that this is only because the broccoli's warmth might have thinned the sauce out. Just stir, eat, and enjoy!
I also like the traditional costume decorations on the walls and I enjoy the option to sit at tables which aren't just "typical." What I mean, is that in addition to normal tables and booths, Star of Siam has some tables which are sort of lowered and have cushioned benches surrounding them. I don't know how else to describe them, sorry :(
Also the bathroom was very clean when I went there.
Hope you like it!
Still not the best Thai I have had in my life, but Star of Siam puts out consistently authentic Thai cuisine at a reasonable price, especially in "The Loop.". Great spot for a quick lunch, as service is pretty quick.
There are two Thai restaurants near Grand-Red, and I have always chosen Star of Siam. In fact, I've eaten here twice before the Yelp American Male and Planet Yelp events.
What attracts me to Star of Siam is their prices; they are WAY more reasonable than Vong's. Take Pad Thai Jae for instance, it's $6.75 here and ... $11.95 at Vong's. Yeesh! I was even able to have Pad Thai at Star of Siam because they use salt instead of fish sauce. Yay! But, their Pad Thai usually lacks the sweet and savory flavors that are critical in Thai cuisine. It also comes with lemon, not lime. Argh! That's a pet peeve of mine. Their Pad Kee Mao and Khao Pad are average as well. How can I describe average? It's not the best Thai food I've had, but the quality is consistent enough that I will return (when another Yelp event requires me to transfer onto a bus near Grand).
Star of Siam is an elaborately adorned restaurant. It is tastefully decorated with traditional Thai art and clothing. (I remember wearing hilltribe dresses when I was a wee lass.) There is plenty of seating, but expect a wait on weekends. Skip the tables in the middle of the restaurant. They aren't as cool as you think. Ladies with dresses/skirts CAN NOT enter or exit gracefully. There's no back support either.
It is a terrible harbinger of doom when you open your Asian food order and see Panda soy sauce. When someone is using something WORSE than Panda, I guess you should know what you are in for.
I ordered Shrimp Panang Curry and Pad Thai last night from Star of Siam. The woman on the phone was curt, and didn't ask relevant questions such as "How spicy do you want your dish?". I specified Thai medium for my pad Thai, worried that Star of Siam may be too hot - but know that I like a spicy curry I ordered the Panang Thai Spicy - which usually lets Thai restaurants know that you want something that is kick ass spicy.
The food came QUICKLY - probably because the delivery guy could walk here from S.O.S. I should have called in an SOS as soon as I saw the food. The rice was old, it smelled old, and it tasted old - I had one bite and was done with it. There were two containers of mystery liquid - I'm not sure what they were, but I lost my appetite so quickly that they were quickly tossed out anyway.
I'll give you the good news first - the Pad Thai wasn't AWFUL. In a pinch I would eat it. It wasn't inedible, but it was BLAND. It was lemon flavored which is new for me (Traditionally Pad Thai comes with a lime wedge to squeeze) and perhaps that led to it's blandness. Apparently medium at S.O.S is the equivalent of horribly bland because this thing had NO kick to it. There wasn't the delicate blend of flavors which you expect, there was NO coconut milk in the sauce which is a cost cutting measure which I sure noticed, and the peanuts were just HEAPED on the top of it. It tasted like eating boiled noodles with peanuts and lemon sauce. What made the dish Pad Thai?
Now to the bad news, the AWFUL news.
You have to cook the SHIT out of a piece of shrimp for it to take on a mealy consistency. It tasted like I had one of the first shrimp, ever, it was so old. I was seriously concerned about getting food poisoning these shrimp looked SO old, which is probably why they over cooked them.
The shrimp were disgusting, they had the consistency of baked cornmeal. They didn't taste ANYTHING like shrimp, and the lumpy, oily sauce they were sitting in was NOT Panang curry. It was red curry which had been on the stove all day and then dumped over shrimp that Moses ate. I took one bite and threw a $15 dish in the garbage after one bite. It was horrid. Furthermore, it wasn't even spicy.
The fact that a kitchen would put out such an incredible piece of garbage shows me that they have NO pride, and they certainly won't be getting any more business from me which is a shame as they are so close.
Peanut sauce, peanut sauce, peanut sauce, why oh why are you so good. I've never had peanut sauce so good. I've been ordering take out from Star of Siam for 2 years now and I've never been disappointed. The take out is always ready within 15mins even at dinner rush time. The cucumber salad is lovely and sweet, just like I like it. The Thai ice tea is a must.
The only downside I've experience is the phone system. I've been hung up on more than once. But it is worth the annoyance.
Yet another location my trusty Yelp pointed me to on my iPhone...
I had a curry chicken (i forgot if it's green or massaman) and is its among the best i hd eaten for a while. Food is served very quickly... can't be blamed as curry, like soup, isn't usually cooked when ordered... and the taste shouldn't be affected too much even though it's ready made.. and this makes the cost cheaper too
Staff are mostly from Thailand and they are quick and friendly. Drinks are frequently checked and refilled, waitress always ask if there's anything needed, though you could still differentiate that they are not skilled.
The decor and ambient is nice too with floor seating available (is that really Thai? -I thought its Japanese). Considering the price and what you get in return, this place is worth a look...
Star of Siam has perhaps been a great find in my area! I stay at a hotel a few blocks away regularly for work and after a couple weeks of the same old places for dinner, I NEEDED to branch out and get something different for my own sanity!
I found Star of Siam and was pleasantly surprised by their prices. I've only had carry out and delivery from here, both of which were great --- but the interior looks cozy and fun too so I would definitely be up for dining out here sometime too when I don't want to break the bank. The food I would only rate about a 3 - not because its not good, just because its your usual Thai and they definitely don't do many frills. But if you're looking for fast, easy and cheap - this would be my #1 recommendation.
There pot stickers are the best in the entire world, hands down. Not that I have traversed the entire world, but I am great at assuming things. The meals I have had there are great too.
This spot has a great atmosphere with a fast and friendly staff to match not to mention the delicious unique drinks.
When I think of ordering take-out, and having a chill night at home, Star of Siam immediately comes to mind.
Excellent quality on everything I've ever ordered, and they deliver relatively quick (usually less than 45 minutes).
The "Rama Chicken" rocks my world on a regular basis, and if I'm feeling extra aggressive, I'll add some Pad Thai.
My one and only complaint, minor as it is, is that rice is NOT included with any entree.
My parents have actually loved this place before I was born so I think I was predestined to have a love affair with Star of Siam as well.
The food is delicious, not too pricey, and is in a great location, close proximity to other fun bars in the River North area for some after dinner fun. My sister and I walked to Pops for Champagne after our meal to grab a drink and then stopped by Martini Park.
We recently took some friends to Star of Siam and they enjoyed the dining experience. Def. worth a try! :) You won't be let down!
My friends and I went here on Valentine's day. I had never tried Thai food before so needless to say I was more than a little skeptical.
I ordered. The spicy beef sticks and shrimp dumplings as a starter and had oyster beef as my entree. Everything was really good and extra spicy, and our food came out pretty quickly. The only issue we had was with our drinks. Not only did it take about 20 minutes for our drinks to make it to our table but myself and another friend ordered the same thing but our drinks looked and tasted completely different. It took another 10 minutes to explain that they had given me the wrong drink and another 15 to correct it. That fiasco aside, I would definetly go again. I just won't order drinks.
Their peanut sauce alone deserves a great review. The rest of the food is good, nothing out of the ordinary, but not disappointing. Staff was nice and seating was quick even without a reservation.
I like that they encourage customers to ask for their favorite dish should they not find it on their menu. Very thoughtful.
