Berkeley, CA
Star Grocery is in a great neighborhood. Since it's walking distance from my house, occasionally the thought of running over to grab a beer strikes me; and sometimes I do that, considering that they have about 75% of my favorite beers, and about 20 additional kinds of beer whose quality is indisputed (but they're not my favorite, since I prefer the local microbrews). I saw a Dogfish Head gluten-free beer in their refrigerator! But I digress.
Recently, a walk to Star Grocery took me past their ridiculously ample chocolate selection, toward the beer case, and on the way, I picked up: Cowgirl Creamery cottage cheese AND Granny Choe's kimchi! (http://www.grannychoe....) AND Hodo Creamery's spicy yuba strips. Two of those three items are not even available at the Berkeley Bowl; they're *quite* obscure, and coveted. I had decided against paying $30+ to have six jars of kimchi shipped to my house, but not without regret; so imagine the joy upon spying it in the Star Grocery refrigerator!
So I walked past the smorgasbord of gourmet pastas, the generous gluten-free section, and the small-but-appealing produce, and picked out a Lagunitas IPA or whatever craft brewery represented whatever beer I felt like drinking. Oh, I think it was the Dogfish Head 90-Minute IPA. Then I got some artisanally-baked ginger cookies, paid for all this amazing cuisine, and walked home.
Their hours are old-school, and moldy bread and not-so-fresh creme fraiche have been purchased there. But it was most likely when the greater part of their well-heeled clientele had decamped for the Riviera or something, leaving no one to circulate the merchandise in due timeliness. Most of the time their stores are fresh and amazing.
Oh, and I do wish they would bring back the Berghof rootbeer, which is certainly the best rootbeer available. Now that Star Grocery has reduced the rootbeer selection to only five or so, I have to go all the way to Bevmo on a bike, which is a trek (the distance, and the brand); but that is the price worth paying for the best. -

I came here for one reason alone -- I had a hankering for Republic of Cake cupcakes and being the socially conscious citizen I am, I did not want to waste the gas associated with driving all the way to Orinda! So, instead I drove to Berkeley.
Unfortunately, after a brief survey of the entire store, the teenager behind the counter informed me that they were out of Republic of Cake cupcakes. Bummer.
However, my survey of the store informed me that Star Grocery has a plethora of grocery items -- standard and unique. What a wonderful neighborhood grocer! I would definitely come back here if I was in the neighborhood and needed high quality products in a pinch.
Keep on stocking those cupcakes, yo?! -

I am very lucky to have this store near my neighborhood. Great selection of chocolate and beer, plus Acme breads, artisan cheeses, pesticide-free and local produce, a good meat counter, plus all the basics.
Yeah, some of the standard items cost somewhat more than Safeway, but they have lots of stuff that Safeway doesn't have. (Quality rather than quantity, and local rather than national corporate name brand.) Plus they are generally friendly and helpful. A great local store. -

Yay Star. I'm a fan for sure. Good staff, owner, beer, organic. My family has been shopping here for decades. More expensive than Safeway, but that probably a good thing, amirite? Favorite local grocery. They also have weird stuff I've never had a reason to buy but looks awesome (clotted cream, fancy nutella-like spread, etc).

Adorable place. Please never shut down, I want to shop here forever.
The young men who work there are both friendly and knowledgeable about everything from alcohol to fruits and back to spice rubs.
Girls are not as friendly, but oh well.
Awesome selection of stuff you CANNOT find at safeway or whole foods. local foods that are Actually organic, not whole foods organic. Prices are okay, Way good for a local grocery.
Love This Place! -
Review from Eric B.
When I was growing up in small town Iowa, our neighbourhood had a family-owned grocery store called Bringles. The space was funky, the butcher was the best in town, credit was extended in need, and everybody knew your name (and often your business). I would often walk here from home with Mom's grocery list, sign for it, and head back.
Star Grocery is the "Big City" version of my beloved corner store. And it's much better. I've enjoyed delicious deli sandwiches here, spent too much trying to choose among their extensive beer collection, and "worshiped" at their butcher counter and produce section. It's all contained in a rambling and sometimes worn community-friendly space where you're never quite sure what you'll discover next. They truly don't make places like this any more. -

Last night, a friend asked if I've ever had a sandwich from star grocery. Nope.
Today, a different friend asked if I wanted her to pick me up a sandwich from star grocery. Yes please.
Coincidence? I think not. Fate? I think so.
Based on another yelp review, I'm pretty sure I had the soprano sandwich + prosciutto. Oymygawd!! So delish. Mozzarella, arugula, bruschetta, balsamic, and that prosciutto.....DROOL. Beware of the garlicky aftermath - there are chunks and chunks of raw garlic in the bruschetta. I love garlic but even I had to pick some of them out. The bread was also so so good. According to my friend, they are almost guaranteed to run out of bread every day. Ridonk!
Ah I'm in love.Listed in: Sammiches!!

The most delicious meat sandwiches! Because we could not decided where to start, we decided to start from the top and work our way down, with the plan to make it through the entire menu.
As great of a selection with the quality of Genoa, without the line of Genoa.
They stop making sandwiches at 2 or 3pm. -

Talk about laid back and relaxed, they even still have sign accounts. Lots of local stuff from bread, chocolate, beer to baked goods. Yes, there are supermarkets with bigger selections, better decor and more parking: but this is a gem.

This review is for the beer section only.
The beer section is legit. You may think the beer section is not legit just because it's relatively tiny compared to Bevmo. However, the two fridges are packed with beer that is only available in Star grocery. Harley, the beer buyer, is approachable and willing to answer any questions regarding to beer release dates/recommendations.
Conclusion- get your regular beer at Bevmo and wholefood. Make a stop at Star Grocery to rack up some hard to find beer recommended by Harley. -

By far my favorite grocery in greater Rockridge. A real old-timey feel, they have a great selection of breads, beer, yogurt, you name it. Not overpriced like Market Hall but not Safeway processed plastic. I try to do all my shopping here.

Community grocery store stocking lots of local and organic foods; a meat counter that ONLY has anti-biotic free, hormone free meat. Easy to get to and park, from Ashby, 13, and 24 as well as bike from Cal. In a pretty residential area. Good prices for a store this size.
In other words, the perfect bay area local grocery store. -

This review is totally biased
I know the owner
the managers
many of the employees
I used to be an employee
They've employed other members of my family
I go there often
There was a time when I'd have been happy dining on Kraft mac and cheese for the rest of my life, working here, however, spoiled (elevated?) my palate, vastly increasing my grocery bills....
They have a fine selection of high quality foodstuffs, awesome produce, and an excellent meat counter. A great wine selection, a good wall o' liquor, and a deep selection of craft beers.
A special mention should go out to the hand wrought signage within the store ;-)Listed in: joie de vivre

Star Grocery is legit.
Assuming the worst about other small overpriced food stores in the area, I have never entered the store until earlier this week when my sister and I ordered sandwiches from the meat counter.
We ordered the Goodfella and Godfather and shared both. $8.50 per sandwich was a great deal considering the amount of high quality meat, argula, mozzarella cheese, and roasted peppers that was stuffed into fresh bread (from Acme I think ).
The quality of cuts at the meat counter was some of the better I have seen, but they are definitely priced just as high as their quality was. They cure their meats and make their sausage in house, and they looked delicious. Their local produce looked fresh, which is awesome of course. I was especially enthralled by the kale. The prices were high, around the same prices in Hawaii.
Good beer and wine selections, nice artisan products, and having moved home where nutritional yeast is $15/pound, seeing an $8/pound price was nice.
I gave it 4 stars for its awesome sandwiches and high quality of their products, not 5 because it is a little more expensive than local produce you could find at the farmer's markets. I'm definitely going back for the sandwiches! -

This gem of a store is one of Berkeley's best kept secrets. It has been owned by one family for many years. From the farmer's market produce to the great beverage selection to artisan products; it is one stop shopping. They even stock raw milk. The meat concession in the back carries really nice products as well. Additionally, the prices are very reasonable for the high end products they carry.

Five stars to the guys behind the butcher counter!
I went to the Star Grocery next door to buy ingredients to make sausages. (I had taken a pork butchery class few days earlier and thought it would be fun to make sausages with my friends.) I started chitchatting with the guys and before I knew it they were giving me sausage-making tips and volunteering to grind the meat up for me! The next day, I went over with my marinated pork to do just that, but I got invited behind the counter. I got to grind, mix, and stuff the sausages! Whoa! Way cool! The best part was that they were so nonchalant and friendly. They just won themselves a loyal customer. -

This place has so much history and yet is so up-to-date at the same time. I absolutely LOVE this market. This grocery has been in business a long time and the Pappas family are now on the 3rd or 4th generation to run it. They carried neighborhood folks thru' the Great Depression by allowing credit when that was a risky proposition. They still allow people to sign for their groceries and they have an extremely loyal following.
Pretty much everything you need can be found here including an alarming array of chocolate, fresh produce (the produce section is managed by Misake who is incredibly knowledgeable) and lots of organic options. The wine selection is aces and today I even surprised Stuart by locating a hard-to-find Kermit Lynch Cote du Rhone he likes. The meat section has changed a couple of times and is an old-fashioned butcher shop. People tell me the quality is excellent.
I like the fact that the floors are wooden and worn. I like that there is no canned Muzak. I like that they hire kids to ring up your sale, and help you to the car if you need help. I respect the way they do business and that they listen to customers. I think every neighborhood should have a grocer like Nick Pappas. He's a hold-out to the way things used to be and I think this store is a fine example of shopping local. Go and support this place. You will feel good, and you will feel connected to this neighborhood. Who knows? You may even find a babysitter (they post ads in the window), a gardener, a dog walker, or just the perfect bottle of wine. -

Brentwood, CA
I babysit nearby and this is known as "the bagel spot" for them because they have bagels for $.75. They also have a great selection of dried goods that are sold by the pound. I absolutely love the Vanilla Almond Granola. Very good. They have fresh produce, liquor and a wide selection of other goods - tissue paper, garbage bags, mustard, cheese, and meat! The staff is incredibly friendly and they even post local flyers in their window to assist the community - such as baby sitters, piano lessons, domestic assistance, etc.
The only thing I thought was a little much was the pricing of some things - $2.50+ for a small box of kleenex. Yikes. -

What happened to customer service?
I had an issue where I was charged for items which I did NOT purchase. The manager/owner could have cared less and had the gaul to intimate was my fault, my problem. He did nothing to address the situation and flat out said "I must have forgotten what I had purchased!" From the evening before? -- please.......very condescending, unhelpful and frankly, plain rude.
It's a shame because my son's school is nearby and we go there often for an icecream or cookie treat after school! No more. The grocery itself is wonderful. The staff and management not at all!! Beware. ALWAYS ALWAYS ask for your receipt (no matter how small the purchase - mine was 2 items - $8.00) and check it before you leave. Goodbye Star Grocery - you are not customer friendly. -

This charming grocery on the Claremont strip stocks all the right stuff! You'll find the everyday staples as well as specialty items you might need in a pinch.
Things I found on a quick stroll-through that will keep me going back:
House made sausage
Crusty bread from Acme
Fresh cilantro, dill and mint
A ginormous beer and wine selection
More varieties of chocolate than Willy Wonka
A complete Asian section
Friendly, helpful peeps
Cooking makes me happy. Eating makes me happy. Supporting individually owned business makes me happy. -
Review from Jenni D.
I like beer. Many people like beer. The people who like good beer, would appreciate that Star Grocery is worth the trip out to Claremont if you don't live in the area.
They have an amazing beer selection with great breweries like Dogfish, 21st Amendment, and more. I'm a huge fan of 21st Amendment's Hell or High Watermelon beer, which is infused with real watermelon flavoring (no concentrate here). This beer gets even better... it's in a can! I thoroughly enjoyed having something else other than a Coors Light on Super Bowl Sunday this year.
I also liked the pasta selection here, and satisfied my pasta craving by buying some great noodles to make for dinner. The cashiers were all very friendly, and I look forward to buying beer and pasta here again. -

A charming little market, very nice people, lots of cool drinks and snacks not found in your typical supermarket, and a cashier whose smile can calm even the most shaken nerves... a nice old man he was.
I loved the layout of the market. It was very old-fashioned and fun to browse through. It seemed like you could never guess what they sold around the corner... and it always seemed to be something cool, worth trying, or at least something that would induce some sort of double-take.
I didn't get to spend much time in the market because I was pretty much bee-lining it to the deli for Star Meats.
4 Stars for a cool little market. I WILL be coming back here to pick up some of the cool snack packs I saw. -

I wish I had discovered Star Grocery when I lived three blocks away! It's right near my parents' house, but, inexplicably, was never a regular grocery stop for us. Now I'll probably make the trek up there anyway, or combine the odd shopping trip with a family visit, since it's just a little bit further than the Berkeley Bowl, and has a lot more going for it.
It's the kind of well-stocked local grocery store that feels almost like an anachronism. The selection is quite varied, considering the size of the store, and prices are surprisingly low for the great food they have. Their produce section is small but second in quality only to the farmers' market, including a wide range from local farms -- yesterday I got local Cara Cara oranges, Full Belly Farm beets, and Willey Farm leeks and parsnips, and passed by Full Belly wheat flour only because I still have half a bag left at home. When I have a little more money I will surely be back to check out their chocolates, meats, pantry staples, etc....Listed in: Good food in the East Bay.

They have a surprisingly wide selection of items for a small market. They have gluten free flour and lactose free milk for example. Although they don't have my favorite brands sometimes I still enjoy being able to walk to a local market.
Since I moved from the NW corner of Berkeley to the SE corner I have greatly missed Berkeley Natural Grocery (http://www.yelp.com/se...) and while not a complete replacement it is certainly better than my other walking distance alternatives. -
Review from Helen V.
Star Grocery is your REAL local Berkeley market. It's quaint with a homey feel and has the little unique things you can't find elsewhere. Although it has all these qualities, you should note that actually doing all your grocery shopping here is VERY EXPENSIVE.
I like the butchers in the back of the store for their deli meats. Hot coppa, salami, and all the other goodies.
And Star Grocery has an AMAZING beer selection! Not to toot my horn or anything, but I have been privy to some very unique beers and I have found them at Star Grocery for an affordable price! It definitely makes me think twice about heading out to the bars and spending a fortune.
Good meats, beers, and food... -

Star Grocery is a wonderful place to explore new foods. The variety and quality of their drinks, snacks, candies (especially chocolate), teas and foods is amazing. For me, entering the Star is about the small things, like lavender flavored soda and peppercorn chocolate. I have a friend whose grandparents used to live one block away, and they have had an account here for more than 50 years and only had great things to say about it (yes, the old fashioned I-trust-you-to-pay-your-bill-at-the-end-of-the-mon th kind).
In general, they sell upper-end, gourmet goods at prices that are lower than other shops of their caliber, even those which specialize in one item, like tea or chocolate. -

I used to haul my ass to ledger's liquors whenever I needed some good beer, but now that I've found star, no more. They have an unbelievable selection of single bottles, with lot's of unusual brands and styles. Looking for the Hitachino nest ginger beer? They got it. That crazy flemish lambic? They got it.
The meat selection is up there (not quite ver brugge, but what can you do?), lot's of fresh produce and fruit (including plenty of local farmers' products), great natural food, and plenty of household supplies.
This place is a like a small little distilled berkeley bowl - they don't have as much of the pre-packaged or frozen stuff, and are missing the awesome asian aisle, but in terms of convenience this place can't be beat. Plus the staff is friendly and helpful.
I can't believe I only found out about this place now. -

New York, NY
If there is an equivalent to "local food" in the grocery world, Star Grocery is it: they've been in the neighborhood for years, are family owned, and their food seems entirely catered to the tastebuds of the neighborhood/area. There's a plethora of fine chocolates, breads, cheeses, and they have all the things that I was surprised to find in a "mom and pop" store: they have humane raised eggs, the butcher in the back has marin sun farm meat, and they have produce from local farms--recently, I spotted ramps!
I can't believe that I've missed this place for more than a decade. It wasn't until a friend of mine said, "Go to Star Grocery," that I dropped in and was totally surprised.
My husband (who also loves the place--he sees it as a mini-Berkeley Bowl without the drama of parking and the crowded aisles and the occasional crazy shopper) and I now view farmers market + Star Grocery as the perfect food sourcing pairing. They're definitely cheaper than Whole Foods--we spotted Meyers products there at almost a dollar cheaper.
So--you'll feel good shopping at Star Grocery (for all the reasons stated above but also because the place feels local and has a feel-good vibe) and you won't regret it either because it won't be an act of altruism. There's good stuff here and it's priced well.
Oh and if you like the booze, they've got a great selection. -

A neighborhood gem! They have everything you could want and then some! I have yet to find another place that carries bread in can!(you know....for emergencies)
Head on to the back of the store to the butcher shop to find my all time favorite-Lebenese Bologne!
Mikey, who runs things, makes sandwiches that you will end up dreaming about-I usually order two! Yes, they are that good!
And to top it off, if you are clueless on how to prepare the meat or fish you are buying, just ask Mikey! He will give you simple and tasty recipe.

Star Grocery is everything and more you might want from a neighborhood grocery store. Personal service, unique selection of foodie foods, organic veg and even an independent butchers in the back that make excellent deli sandwiches. And if you are a beer geek this place will flip your lid...crazy selection of curated unique beers most of which would be hard to find at other beer destinations like Beer Revolution or City Beer store. Really...see for yourself, you won't be disappointed...

Berkeley, CA
Star Grocery is what a local business should be about. They have what you need (fresh produce, breads, flour, sugar...) and what you desire (chocolate, wine, coffee...). Prices are fair, service is friendly and the place definitely has roots. They seem to care about their clients (credit slips, offers of assistance) and their customers definitely care about them.
Stop in on a weekday afternoon and see the kids from the preschool down the block shoppings for snacks and dinner with their parents. Stay a little later as the refugees from the San Francisco commute make their way back home. Get a coffee, or maybe a piece of fruit to enjoy on the wooden benches out front. The awning keeps you protected from sun and rain so you can watch the joggers, cyclist, dogs and everyone else run, ride and drive past on Claremont.
Good selections of what they do carry, from PG Tips tea to bulk foods to a deep wine list.
Kudos to Star Grocery for setting the standard for how a business can be a great neighbor. -

A colossal disappointment. Went there this weekend for the first time to get some basics and was insulting overcharged (trying to be Andronicos?) and then not provided nor offered an itemized receipt. I was simply handed my credit card receipt and stared at awkwardly. I have a yucky feeling that I may have been charged an extra $5 or $10...Although most of the food was fine, I opened the box of Nature Made Agave sweetened granola and it tasted like a horrid combination of stale (cardboard) and bug spray. I want to return it, but I don't have an itemized receipt! I was so disappointed in my experience that I feel obligated to balance out their outstanding rep in the neighborhood.
