This place features a once a month great band lineup with no cover on a thursday night; only happens once a month - usually on a Thursday night. I love this place and have been going here for years.

Monday night is standup comedy night. It used to be an amateur open-mike night but lately has evolved into more of a seasoned amateurs / semi-professional showcase; better than The Punchline open-mike amateur night and FREE (no cover).

Tuesday night used to be disco night with DJ Romeo Cologne; one of Atlanta's longest running late night disco night dance parties. Have not been in awhile so I cannot say if it is still going strong.

Weekend night feature bands of local regional and national prominence. The genre is usually rockabilly / southern rock / grunge / blues infused rock. I recently saw Nashville Pussy here for a rare US appearance.

This place is a dive bar so it may not suit everyones tastes. There is a downstairs bar with an outdoor patio for smokers.

I don't hate it... but I sure as hell don't get it.

Somehow over the last year or so I've come to know 80% of the DJ population in Atlanta (which means there's still at least 2.7 million around I haven't met) and somebody was spinning here that one of my friends was either close to, stalking, or hooking up with... so alas, here we go.

There's always a guy in there wanting to draw your face. There's also always this redheaded-ish meth/crack/whatever whore jumping around... and then there's always men in the ladies' restroom.

I suppose if I was absolutely inebriated I would enjoy this more than I have (if only for entertainment purposes) but so far I just kinda... suffer. =/

    You were in my dreams
    last night.
    Yes.
    Yes, you were.

You are one dirty bird and you know
    I like it dirty.
I like it dirty and the
    way
    you talk to me: Through
    your bartender specials:
The $5 ginger Jameson pint or a tall can and a shot.
You scream "take me take me take me..."
    and I try.
    I do.
    You little tease you.

I have only had the pleasure to play
with you a few times. But in those four visits...
    I fell in love.
The musky smell, the friendly come hither vibe, the in your
face this is who I am take me or leave me....

    I will take you.
I will take you every chance I get.

    I just wish....
you treated me the same and paid
    out
    a little more.

    Until the next time we have our song and dance;
    I will always hold
the times we have had in a special place,
    in my liver.

God I love this dirty, disgusting little place. It's a proper dive, but you get the bonus of a heavy event rotation as opposed to scary regulars in leather and overalls. There's an element of SoCo to it, that good ol' nasty hipster redneck thaaang. I'm into it. Anyway, apparently they have awesome bands here on the regular, but I really only ever show up for Monday Open Mic nights.

I don't know if you know this, because no one does, but Atlanta actually has a pretty well-respected and quickly growing stand up comedy scene. You're welcome for that news. Mondays at Star Bar are where seasoned comics work out new material (which I know because they cannot seem to resist telling you DIRECTLY before doing the joke) and fledgling little baby birdy comics make everyone super uncomfortable by looking like they're about to barf on stage. It's a win-win if you leave your "giving a shit about human pain" at the door. Drinks are cheap, appropriately strong, and some of the comics are verging on making it for realz. For all you "I saw them when"-ers, get it in while the gettin's good. These guys are the real deal and I can't think of a better setting for abortion jokes, am I right? Eh? Eh? Ok.

The Star Bar is the best dive bar in the area. And if you're looking for a place that will make you reek of smoke after only five minutes, look no further!

The men's bathroom has no stall door. That's how you know this place is the real deal.

So I have been to this place to see some pretty shitty fucking shows.  I mean this dude named Cousin Dan played and it well sucked really bad.  People seemed into it and were all like dancing but it sucked.  They should book more bands like vegan coke and purkinje shift.  Fuck is that band Rizzudo still around?  They kind of ruled too.  Shit anything with some drums and bad ass solos would be nice.  The drinks aren't too bad in this shit hole.  My girlfriend always wants mix drinks and fancy shots and they were kind of expensive.  I got kind of drunk the last time I was there and stole Cousin Dan's drink.  My girlfriend got me to leave but the dudes that worked there didn't seem to care that I stole Cousin Dan's drink.  Also it is by that shit hole the vortex.

There's not always a cover at one of Atlanta's favorite dive bars.

There's comedy on Mondays, Dance Parties on Tuesday with 25 cents draft beers from 9-11p, and several bands are showcased on Thursday nights from about 10p-2am-ish - that's three out of six days without a cover. (Closed on Sundays)

On nights when there is a cover it's usually for a reputable band who deserves to get paid to play there. Bands such as CC Booker III and Cadillac Jones are two local bands who performed there in late June
    to a very enthusiastic crowd.

In the past, I have seen performances by The Urban ShakeDancers, KingSized and Unknown Hinson.

My number one complain about the place is the smoke.  It seems every other person who enters there is a smoker which is one of the reasons it is such a popular hangout spot.  It's right up there with Northside Tavern when it comes to smokey places in Atlanta.

One of the coolest thing about Star Bar is the guy at the door who asks for ID and stamps your hand. He is definitely as much a fixture as the "Elvis Sanctuary" in the back corner. To hear some people tell it - he's been there since day one-always smiling and doodling some pretty cool stuff.

The Tuesday Night Dance Remix is definitely worth the time, energy and effort. The music doesn't really get going until about 11p or so. By 12 or 1a it's in full swing and everybody is cuttin' the rug to the cool, hip, funky sounds of 70's and 80's dance mixes.

If you happen to end up there for a first date or secret rendezvous
there are a few dark quiet spots in this lively joint. There's a patio out back and a lounge which puts distance between you and the music which by the way can get pretty loud. You may want to purchase ear plugs for a dollar or bring your own - it will make a difference.

If you're looking for something to get your heart rate up at the beginning of the week, something to help get you through the rest of the week- you just may want to mozy on down to Star Bar in L5P and get your mojo workin'.

Star Bar is so nasty in a good way. The stage sits high, providing a relatively unobstructed view of the band at-hand. The crowd spews contagious energy, despite the occasional misogynistic remark. And the bartenders are really nice, even offering me little shots of water when I can't hold a cup.

It's totally okay that my favorite Anthro dress now permanently reeks of smoke.

That's how much of a star you are, stinking bar.

I'm "Yay- a fan!" mostly for the EPIC Elvis sanctuary in the back corner of this L5P venue.  They've really outdone themselves with the prayer stool. Thank yuh vurry much.

Overall though, Star Bar is not a place I would visit too regularly. You've got the dirty bathrooms, the malfunctioning toilets, the ash covered floors, and the worst part? A COVER FOR A DIVE BAR. Kills me, but it's reasonable since there are always bands playing, and you've gotta support them, am I right?

It's most fun to see a show and take comfort in the fact that there are TWO bars, all within about 10 yards of each other.

The high points of Star bar would include:
2 bars, cheap-er drinks, indoor smoking, intimate venue, photo booth, greasy strangers, the Grace-tuary, easy-to-find parking, the occasional sketch-artist. (No really, people that draw.)

This is not your place if you don't feel like showering later.
    Or maybe it is...

So you want to get hammered and shake your ass to the groovin' sounds of the seventies til 3 AM on a Tuesday?  Boy, do I have the place for you!

I don't know how normal people are able to do this, but my job affords me summers off, so I can partake from time to time.  Anyways, it may have just been the people I was with, or the people I met while I was here, but I had a great time at the Super Tuesday Funk Dance Party.

    Things to Consider:
    1. There is no cover (yeah!)
    2. The drinks are super cheap.  My entire tab was $10, and that was only because that was minimum.
    3.  Doesn't really get going til after midnight, but thats ok because there are darts in the basement.
    4. Being after midnight on a Tuesday, the crowd is pretty small.  It can be intimidating to dance at first, but there were plenty of dudes willing to show me how.
    5. Even if you don't dance, this is probably some of the best people watching in the city.
    7. Smoky, dirty, nasty, dive bar.  It is what it is.

I pretty much always have a good time at this dirty, smoke-filled, alcohol-fueled dive venue.  The standup/karaoke combo on Monday nights is particularly interesting, as its known to be the "hardest room" for comics in the city and people doing karaoke afterward get F-in serious.

Somehow there is ALWAYS one extremely drunk guy at the Star Bar.  Not a "kinda drunk" guy, or a "pretty drunk" guy, but THAT GUY who is somehow still standing for two hours even though he has to stop and lean against something and put his head in his hands every few minutes... you're always waiting for him to vomit, but he never does.  Magical.

Tip: Don't wear anything you can't easily wash that "Star Bar" smell out of.

Drinks are strong so tip your bartender and make sure to take Advil and drink water before you stumble into bed.  :P

Parking is okay if you can get into the lot.  Bring small bills.

    Dirty, smoky, and downright delightful.

The Star Bar is the closest thing to a dedicated rockabilly bar that I can think of in Atlanta; any time there's a 'billy show I want to check out, it's inevitably here. The Star can also be lauded for the free shows it has several times a week. Karaoke on Mondays inevitably starts way late, but it's always a raucous good time (thanks, Rotknee!).

You all know about the Elvis Vault by now, and I'll admit that it's one of my favorite tour guide bits to perform for visiting friends. The overall decor, however, is reminiscent of a nightclub from a David Lynch movie, and I mean that in the best possible way. When someone really rockin' is playing, the checkerboard tiled floor and red ambient lighting really add to the experience.

    Also, there's $1 Black Label beer after 1 a.m.!

I've only been to Star Bar a couple of times (sorry, I'm not a music genius) on Monday nights for their comedy open mike. When I first went, there were about 20 people in the audience (not including the comics). When I went last Monday, there were about 60 people in the audience. Looks like open mike at Star Bar is blowing up!

I've been served by two bartenders who were equally cool although I do kind of favor the one with the big curly afro (sue me, I like big curly afros, especially on white guys). On these nights, I haven't been drinking alcohol and sometimes a bartender will diss you when you're not drinking beer or liquor but these guys didn't do that (but I did tip them as if I'd gotten an alcoholic beverage - service is service).

Parking is plentiful and free on Monday nights (other nights someone will harass you for money, especially on the weekends). As of this writing there is no cover for the Monday open mike.

The only downside is the smoke. I don't smoke, but it seemed like everyone else in the building did. I left about an hour and a half and felt like I'd probably sacrificed a third of a lung in there.

In summary, it's a good vibe and a good intimate venue for comedy, so check it out!

Typical dirty, smoke-reeking, grimy dive bar. I came here once for a show, and the bands in the line up were hit or miss. The main floor was pretty cramped, but you could also go downstairs to another lounge/bar portion, and also a small back patio.

No one seems to walk to the nearest traffic light outside the venue, so if you're driving watch out for the drunk people running across the 2 way street.

Smoky dive bar free of too-cool bartenders? Check.

Lots of local music, rockabilly, and comedy on Mondays? Check.

Cheap drinks, cheapish parking, and all the people watching your heart could desire? Check.

A photo booth and the Gracevault? Check.

One of my favorite places for live music in Atlanta and as someone else said, a great venue for photographing bands.

Shake your boootay, shake shake shake your booooo ooo oooo tay!!! That's what we do whenever we've come here. Tuesday nights are the BEST!!! D.J Romeo Cologne knows how to spin those oldies and when I say oldies I mean Jackson Five and so forth..."I can feel it, I can feel it" It doesn't matter who you are, young, old, prep or punk...you will be here and you will be dancing.

The music is great, the crowd smells of variety and fun, and the drinks are cheap. No seriously, they have a drink called "The Cheap Shit". lol $2 draft. :oD $7 cover on Tuesdays and if you check out their website they have live bands listed on other nights as well.

I love this place! I'm never disappointed and I can always count on them if I skipped a run that day because you'll get plenty of excercise movin' your legs, shaking your hips, and poppin your a**.... I mean bootay. lol

When emo kids pretend to be punk this is where they hang out.

Seriously though, the place was pretty disappointing.  I listen to all types of music, so I'm not complaining because of the style of music.  First of all, I got this look from everyone as though I shouldn't be there.  But seriously, what were those little twerps going to do about it?  Second, the drink selection was pretty weak (that's important to me).  And there was a cover charge, even though the band was not worth the money.

I'm all about hole in the wall places that cater to certain crowds, nothing wrong with that.  But I've seen much better.

Dive bars are sadly growing scarce in our quickly homogenizing city. Stein Club and the Beer Mug both faced down bulldozers and lost.  Fuzzy's, The Phoenix, Backstreet (and if you discount Backstreet's status as a dive, then you've obviously never been there at 5am) gone, gone and gone.  That's why we should thank our lucky, Little 5 hearts for The Star Bar.  I'll admit: I don't go here much any more.  The Tuesday Night Dance Party has started the same time for the past 12+ years, but seemingly gets later and later as these bones age.  Open Mic Comedy Mondays and PunkRotnkee's Karaoke were fun until my Tuesday mornings became significantly less so.  But occasionally The Star Bar will have a show I will want to see or the stars, the calendar, and a holiday will align that will allow me to come play.  In those cases, it's still the same old Star Bar I first saw those many, grimy moons ago.

As you enter, two bars are to the left and to the right.  You'll get the same service from each so just pick one.  If the line is too deep, the Vinyl Lounge downstairs has a full bar as well.  The crowd varies depending on the night, the event and the band(s) booked.  There may be a few regulars.  Granted, I'm not the only one who's aged and it's become something of a punkabilly rest home of sorts, but don't let them intimidate you.  In living out their Bukowski fantasies, they're much more interested in meeting their Makers Mark than in meeting you.  That said, the drinks are relatively cheap, especially if you stick with the house special, PBR.  The photo booth works and, unlike The Local's, it's in color. Depending on at which point during the night pictures are taken, color may be a good or a bad thing.

Finally, I'd be remiss if I failed to mention the Elvis shrine.  It's towards the left as you enter, in the old vault.  Light a few candles.  Pick a song from the jukebox (believe me, you may not hear it right away, but it works.) Slip a coin in the slot and make a wish.  Gaze upon the golden toilet bowl.  Once you've done all that, let the spirit of Elvisness wash over you.  One visit to the Elvis shrine will stay with you long after you, and Elvis, have left the building.

This is a seriously crusty, smoky dive bar, which every city needs. Bathroom is a combo of mold, woodrot, eat pu**y graffiti and a lack of toilet paper and working door locks. Might want to take advantage of the band break to find another place to pee.

$5 Ginger Jameson drink special served in a pint glass was powerfully delicious.

Came to see Lloyd's Rocksteady Revue. Singer Jonathan Lloyd is on a  personal mission to stir up the ska scene in the city.

They will be playing for free (before 9) every Weds in March. Very fun show. They don't come on until 10, but you can hang out in the creepy basement playing darts, ogle the Elvis shrine, or catch up with your friends until they go on.

    Cheers~

Ok, so some might say I'm stuck in a rut, but I can't get enough of Tuesday late night at the Star Bar. Quasi, the first DJ of the night, drove up to Lake Allatoona to DJ my brother's rehearsal dinner because my mother said please. The next DJ up Romeo Cologne has been a staple in my life since Funkadelica at The Georgia Theatre in Athens back in 1994. You can't beat the mix of people on Tuesday night. Of course my mother says that I'll never find Mr. Right at 2:30am on a Tuesday, but I plan to prove her wrong. And there's plenty of Mr. Tonight's to keep ya busy.
If you like old school funk, I would suggest very little clothing, closed-toe shoes and a nap, because things don't get started till midnight.

Ages ago I asked a friend, hey - you know anyone who wants to start a Rockabilly band? He told me to start hanging out at the Star Bar. A year later I played my third rock and roll show ever in this awesome little bar.

It's hard to write a review of a place that's made you feel at home for almost 6 years, though that's hardly a long time in the history of the Star Bar. This is the kind of club I want to visit and play shows in in every town. It's a great hang out, it's a great place to play. Like I said in a previous review, generally it's hard to separate how you feel about places you play and hang out at regularly. If it's good one way, it's generally good the other.

You're going to hear some of the best bands no one has heard of here, anything Americana, rock, rockabilly, hipster bands, rock nerds and more. They have great special events, booking the best lineups of local, regional (and national) bands. They also have some of the best sound for a small club that I've ever experienced. It's appreciated from both the player and patron perspective.

I also love hanging out on the back patio outside and talking out musical ideas and catching up with friends in the downstairs bar. You also can't miss the Elvis shrine, for the just plain awesomeness of it and for the memories and life that have been shared in that little corner of the bar.

I have to admit it - I love you Star Bar. Please don't ever go away.

I would say that we need more places like Star Bar in Atlanta, but then that would be impossible. It can't be duplicated, replicated, imitated, or even explicated....

If you've never been, start with a Tuesday night and get your funk on...or just cruise their schedule on the web and pick a band out that sounds interesting. Hell, pick out one that sounds horrible and you'll still have an entertaining time.

Cheap beer, good times, and it makes no apologies for being a smoky dive that showcases unique live acts. Long live Star Bar.

This place has been around for as long as I can remember.  Back before it was cool to look like white trash and drink PBR, folks with no choice but to do so would usually be found here.

A decent place to catch bands that skew towards roots and wild rockabilly.  And then there's the Elvis shrine with a picture of "MMMMOOMMUHHH."

Maybe it was the music.  I went with my sister and her boyfriend to Star Bar to see Royal Thunder and How I Became the Bomb (cool name, I know).  Royal Thunder, with their stuffed ram and goth-looking candles on stage, actually got my stiff hips swaying.  (I don't have arthritis; I just can't dance.)  Perhaps the cheap Cabernet Sauvignon also had something to do with it.

Even though there were various devices broken in the bathroom, I am willing to overlook the dilapidation.  THAT'S how much fun I had.  The bartenders were friendly, the music was great, and the company was even better.

Star Bar is like a little slice of Texas shithole dolloped right on the creamy center of Little 5 Points. Of course, that's the whole reason people go there: it should pretty much be your capital if you're into rockabilly/surf/swing/cowpunk/dives. They have a tiny dirty little stage where bands of such a nature play 6 days a week, through a very mediocre sound system. Again: this is what people go for. PBR and the potential fist fight and Johnny Cash on the jukebox and lots of grime.

They even have a little altar to Elvis, fixed with tons of memorabilia, where you can pop your head in and pay tribute. That's not a joke.

Star Bar definitely isn't my cup of tea. Mainly because sometimes I drink a cup of tea. Tea drinkers aren't allowed in Star Bar. You need at least two tattoos and an exwife. Or long hair (metal style, not pretty boy) and a leather vest.

All that said, they have one of the best karaoke nights in Atlanta, simply because all the people who usually hang out there actually try to stand up drunk on stage and warble Judas Priest. It's frighteningly hilarious.

I decided to come out of my OTP shell last night and venture into the  part of town known as Little Five Points to hang out at the Star Bar.  Of course like most OTP dwellers, I felt a little uncomfortable initially in the area, because I have not yet become accustomed to all of the biker gangs who seem like tattooed vigilantes, sworn to uphold their own version of "street law."  Kinda reminds me of that movie 'Sin City.'

The interior of the Star Bar looks like it has been there for ages, but I later came to realize that the bar actually replaced the bank that once existed in the same building.  That would probably explain why there was a vault inside the place with a thick iron door.  Instead of the money that was once inside the vault, there was an Elvis Shrine which perfectly accomplished the probable hidden agenda of creeping me out.

The rest of the interior is fairly small.  The two bar areas inside the building are adjacent from one another on the left and right sides of the room if your facing the tiny stage.

The staff at the star bar are indeed some of the most interesting individuals I have encountered.  One of the guys looked like Jim Morrison in the later years of the Doors when he had a full beard and beer gut.  The other bartender was also sporting a full mountain man beard, but the hat he was wearing implied that he was going for the coal miner/banjo player look.

There were some pretty good bands showcasing there talent last night.  The stage that the bands perform on is very small, so don't expect to see any of the guitarists get into his power stance at any point during the performance.

Overall, the Star Bar had a unique atmosphere that provided me with a decent amount of entertainment for the night.  It is on the outskirts of a shady part of town, but for some reason I felt pretty safe there.  Maybe it was the vigilante biker gangs outside, who were scouting the streets like a predator, and eagerly anticipating the opportunity to bring their own brand of "street justice" to any criminals that may dwell in the shadows.

hmmmmmm.. We came here on a Tuesday. It was alright; definitely interesting people watching and kinda an experience but I didn't have a super great time or anything.

Cute bartender, totally looks like will ferrell but in a cute way. Might have been the highlight of the night, which is kinda sad.

Also, seven dollar cover, what up? You so crazy.

    Ehhh.

Welcome to Atlanta, darling. My very first bar in Georgia and I discover plus's: Elvis shrine, $2.50 PBR's, amazing music with no cover - thanks Kid's Stuff and Judi Chicago for bringing it!-  glow sticks and balloon drops! )

    and

minus's: people can still smoke in bars down here (uh oh throat, hair and clothes!!)

but no matter-  I met wonderful people, discovered dancing is OK down south and will certainly return!

Yeah, the Star Bar is an interesting place, filled with even more interesting folks!  I've been there more times than I can remember, but there was this one night that was pretty interesting that I will tell you about right....now.

So, it's Valentine's Day a few years ago and I am very much by choice alone (I ditched my obnoxious date after dinner.)  My friend Julie called and asked me if I wanted to go to their annual Anti-Valentine's Day party.

So we headed up there and danced until it got to a point where I had had enough of this old man following me around the floor, grinding his junk into my back (sometimes I thank God that I am ridiculously short.)

We went downstairs to the other bar to escape and had a nice time chatting with some new friends about who knows what.

We knew it was getting late when the tone upstairs had changed from dance party to very drunk folks singing sad Patsy Cline karaoke.  So we decided it was time to stagger out.  But hey, we had a great time.

A great place to catch a show, and as was mentioned, you can always head downstairs if the music upstairs sucks.

Word of warning: there something marked "CHEAP STUFF" on tap. Don't drink it. Ever. It was probably once PBR, but I think somewhere along the way, Star Bar protocol required adding a 10% strychnine solution.

This review is specifically for DJ ROMEO COLOGNE and the Tuesday funk night.  I could honestly care less about any other night at Star Bar.

With a name like that, you KNOW he's funky.  This man is brilliant on the turn tables.  I dance the entire time, (taking breaks for drinks of course) and with enthusiasm.  There's Stevie, Jackson 5....maybe disco shit thrown in....by the end of the night I am covered in sweat.  And when you need a break from the dancefloor there's another bar downstairs with different music and an outdoor patio for smoke breaks.

I have woken up many times the next morning with mystery bruises and sore muscles.  I miss this night more than anything else in ATL.  And I'm never going to find an apt replacement.

The place has no character what so ever - bland as hell, the only entertainment value here is the live band. What I'm saying is that it doesn't offer enough diversity to entertain the average crowd. And if you don't like the music they're playing, you're pretty much out of luck. Tried using the Photo Booth they have there, but couldn't find the dollar slot. :[ My card got denied here, even though we all know that I couldn't possibly be denied. Anywhere. Ever.

Pros: Good music, great crowd, cheap drinks
Cons: the WORST bathrooms of any place you will ever pay to be admitted into, the photo booth pictures came out crappy (bad fixer?)

The Star is a great place to catch punk, rockabilly, alt country, indie acts.  It's shine has dulled a bit, but it can still be lots of fun. Don't like the music upstairs?  Head downstairs!
Adrian, behind the bar, rocks!  Grab a bourbon, PBR tall boy, or both and bee line it to the jukebox.  It's old and it's fantastic!  KISS, Sweet, plenty of punk.  If  you can't make a great playlist on it then just leave.  You've come to the wrong place.
Monday nights are silly fun.  Jett, Rotknee, and Jacob give you "yer 15 minutes of fame."  Get up there and mess up your favorite song.  Everyone else does.
Don't forget to get a picture in the photo booth on the way out, and thank Joe, the door guy, for keeping your ass safe!

if you are wandering in Little 5 Points aimlessly, and need a drink or want to hear not so mainstream music, usually a local act, go to STAR COMMUNITY BAR. I've seen GUITAR WOLF, WOGGLES, KINGSIZED, NEON CHRIST and countless of other bands, though mainly local ones, it's a great place to check out what ATL has to offer.

If you're all about 99X rock star mentality, you're better off going across the street to Junkman's daughter for another NIN t-shirt.  If you prefer the strip down version of it, come pay a visit.

    Now git me a PBR.

    "Great Great Bar and bands!"

It's the best little bar in Atlanta. The crowd is little five points locals and the bar has everything you'd ever want. The bands are wild and crazy... all at the same time.

Try catching one of their special events, like talent show night. You'll have a party and witness strange things. The last time I was there, a mini-bike act filled up the place with smoke... good thing the fire departmen didn't show up.

The downstairs bar is not to be missed... relax and enjoy!

Any bar that has an Elvis shrine is A-OK in my book.

Some good bands come through, while some bad bands are fun to watch go down in flames!

If you can get the dart board downstairs on a really hot or really cold day, it is a great cave to wait out the weather.

Also, the (relatively) new owners are awesome and are keeping the Star Bar true to it's roots. Thanks guys!
