For my first every trip to New York, I wanted to experience it all; walking through Central Park, enjoying the dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum, drinking on the cheap at local pubs, the usual.
And lucky for us, we stumbled upon Stanton Public, where a delicious delicious beer can be had for just $4 (happy hour FTW) and the special is my all time favorite, the "$5 shot of whiskey and PBR" deal. It's like a little bit of awesome familiarity in a foreign city.
The bartender, Christina, took care of us for most of the night, and she was awesome. Apparently it was another bartenders' birthday that night, so you could tell it was going to be a raucous time, and I'm really sad we had to leave before the party really kicked up a notch or 16.
Small and cozy, friendly and a little out of the way, Stanton Public is definitely a place I will demand to be taken back to when I come back to New York in a few months. And trust me, I'm counting the days.
Best. Bartender. Ever.
On the second night of my six day trip to NYC, I met a friend for a drink at this bar. I had a favorable impression of the place almost immediately, but once I found out that our bartender, Christina, was a fellow Texan? And a Houstonian at that? Swoon!
She has her own shot called "XT" (whiskey, triple sec and cranberry) and I recommend trying this if you breathe. What's that, you say? Everybody breathes? Yeah. Everybody should try this goddamn shot. So hurry up.
Amazing beer selection, generous pours, friendly people, and phrases like "I wanna strangle you with my thighs" written on the bathroom wall, which just so happens to be bathed in red light. Are you there yet? Did you try the shot?
The room itself is cozy. Not too small, but not cavernous by any means. It's actually easy to talk to people even when the music is blasting, but I'm not sure you're going to want to talk because you'll be too busy singing along to some great indie rock, or if you stay there late enough, Journey.
Isn't that XT great? You're welcome. Please tell everyone I said hello, and have Christina drink a shot for me.
This is where beer comes to party. The place itself is small, but the beer, oh the beer! The selection is impeccable and the prices are appropriate (a good time can be had starting at $5). The outdoor courtyard area is what makes this place happen. But I will have to say that it's kind of annoying to be told to shhhh every so often by the bouncer, for fear of the upstairs neighbors complaining.
It's a peculiar circumstance really. A loud bar beneath the watchful eyes of the LES residents who threaten to end the party. Seems almost oxymoronic. I would imagine that the beer would get pretty pissed about that. Because who would be able to enjoy the 57 beers that represent all the goodness of the world and get $1 off every beer for every trip made thereafter? You see, Stanton Public has a beer club that one can join to take on this very challenge in an effort to obtain this lifelong coupon.
And no, it doesn't all have to be all in one shot but through the course of various trips on your journey around the world. Of course, don't blame me if the LES'ers sink your ship on the 56th beer.
LOVE Stanton Public! I went here for my birthday and brought like 15 people, so I was able to drink for free, which was awesome considering their selection of beers. They have an awesome back patio with tables and tons of seating. Get there early though, because it gets packed! Love, love, love!!
They have an interesting beer selection, somewhat of a happy hour. This use to be the place we went after work or when someone was leaving the company. They have this back yard deal-y-o. The funniest experience I had there:
On the walk there, I see homeless man 1 (a 6 foot+ muscular dude) push homeless man 2 (a tinier, grubbier, white haired drunkard) into the street yelling obscenities and telling him to get off "his" block. I went to the bar, had a couple. On the way out, homeless 2 was trying to get into the bar. The bartender came out and wouldn't allow it. Homeless 2 kept trying to get in and start shit with the bartender. This charade went on for a while. I stuck around in case the bartender needed someone to call 911 or if he wanted help.
"I'm going in there." homeless 2 said.
"No you're not. Get the fuck out of here." replied the bartender.
"What? You gonna stop me." h2
"I'm gonna kick your ass." bartender.
Then homeless 1 comes back around the street. Homeless 2 started walking away. The bartender flags down Homeless 1 and tells him Homeless 2 is back on his turf.
"He'll take care of it," said the bartender. Hundreds of yards down the street, I saw Homeless 1 punch Homeless 2 and he went down. That's something.
Unpretentious and fun. Also a fan of drinking outdoors, and Stanton Public's got decent space. Never got yelled at for being too loud, but I might be a little more sedate than others. I guess the beer selection is good, but I end up getting the same shit anyway. Cool bartender and chill vibe though, so have gone back often. Plus they got the das boot. Miss it.
Went here during the week with a few friends and absolutely loved it. Very chill vibe, great beer menu and they even have a nice cocktail menu too, if that's your thing. Outdoor area is cozy. Bartender and everyone that works there are just really nice. Good music and not too loud; so it's a great place for conversation. I definitely see this as a place I plan on coming back to often.
I can't comment on what it's like on a Friday or Saturday night though.
I'm tempted to give this 3.5 stars because there was a guy in the garden/outdoor area whose sole purpose was to yell at us to STFU every 15minutes or so.
But 4 stars because they have a good selection of drinks for decent prices, the DJ spinned beats from Phoenix, Robyn (Konichiwa, b*tches!), and Ladyhawke (I mean come on, Ladyhawke!), there was an outdoor space even if we kept getting yelled at like a bunch of 16 year-olds in the back of a dark movie theater, it's not pretentious, and the bouncer is super adorable.
Coming back here again.
When the weather's nice out and you find yourself going out for drinks slightly early in the evening (but still after dinner), head to the outdoor area of Stanton Public. It's a cool, laid back place with some good tunes and drinks on tap. However, as you drift on into the night...you'll definitely be reminded that you're in the heart of the city - as the outdoor area in the the middle of apartment buildings. They have to monitor the noise so you will be shushed until it's the Public's curfew...and you'll have to go indoors for the nightcap.
Where did Stanton Public come from? How did I not know of this bar before? It has all the makings of a solid go-to spot. Let me count the reasons...
1. Beer selection. It's one of the best in NYC... not "the best" by any means but I would have to say top 10.
2. Beer selection. I cannot stress enough how important this is to me... they even offer flights if you want to try a bunch of different options. Dozens of great options in bottles and on draft really can't be beat.
3. Space. Inside, there's not much to discuss, but there is a pretty large outdoor space that I believe was covered by a tent... when it gets warmer out I imagine this would be a great place to hang out, and I think it might also be heated during the winter. Wish I had made it outside when I was here.
4. Mix. What is "mix" you ask? "Mix" is a combination of the "scene," the people and the ambiance. Stanton Public has a good mix... it's not upscale at all but it's not quite a nasty dive bar, and the people aren't really beer snobs like you'd find at a place such as Blind Tiger but they aren't mega-hipsters, trend-setters or assholes (yes, you can categorize anyone into one of 4 kinds of people... beer snobs, mega-hipsters, trend-setters and assholes). The music was provided by a DJ so that kind of adds another dimension, but the music wasn't bad. Overall Stanton Public just has a good... "mix".
5. Unpretentious. Every bar can choose how it treats its customers... do you put a bouncer and a rope outside? Do you charge a cover? Do you make people wait in a line? Is it crowded inside? This place was as unpretentious as they come. No line, no cover, no velvet rope, no hassle, not crowded. It's a low key place that wants its customers to enjoy themselves without much of a to-do, and specifically enjoy their variety of beer options. In fact, the bar challenges its customers to try all the beer and make it into the "Beer Club" on either the wall or a bar stool, depending on how many you try.
Basically I can't wait to go back here and I can see this being the bar that I have my next birthday party at... I also would like to start my quest to make it into the legendary beer club. I invite you to join me on my quest and recommend that you to do the same.
a few nights ago my good friend celebrated her return to corporate america via a long happy hour at stanton public ... note that this is NOT to be confused with stanton social which is further down the street, swankier and contains more refined things on the menu vs. a "bacon parsley baked potato." we classy folk clearly know how to roll...
since i only drink beer during rousing games of flip cup (man, i miss college), i got my standard G&T, but the options galore made me wish i had an affinity for the stuff. (i'd be a much cheaper date!) i did, however, take a couple of sample sips from other guests' cups and...
*cue the overshare*
their beer did NOT make me gassy. i may not be an expert or know what i was drinking but what i tasted wasn't half-bad or mad-carbonated like the bud light shit we drank in college. also, so i wouldn't wake up regretting this the next morning, i ordered a veggie chili baked potato - one of the few, but satisfying things on the menu. just so you know, our table was also a fan of the fries and the special whiskey shot/PBR specials.
a fun, budget-friendly and super-chill way to spend a fri night with good company. best part? the place wasn't crowded at all.
So I've been eying this place for a while.. My interest was piqued when I stumbled across it on yelp and read some glowing reviews. Last night (Friday), after months of putting it off, I made it my business to head down to Stanton Public, and in this time of economic hardship, business was good.
Showed up at about 11:30 or 12, and the place was pretty empty. There were two stools at the bar waiting for my cohort and myself to plop down and get comfy in the drearily lit space. The bartender, with cleavage abound and her hot Russian accent, was helpful, friendly, and never too pushy. The TVs, both black and white, stayed on IFC which was running anime, followed by one of the Living Dead movies, while the DJ played an indy electronica mix that kept my head nodding during the lulls in conversation. It's also good to mention that the music wasn't so loud that you had to yell to hear yourself speak.
The drinks are of decent price, and the selection of beer is quite impressive, so much that I'll have to head back there very soon to try some new tastes. The only thing keeping this place from the ever elusive 5 Ernie Stars is the fact that it's a little cramped.. Though not at all a bad thing, it makes it feel very cozy and much like a 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th, etc) home. Stanton Public seems like a hidden gem off the beaten path, and I'm kicking myself for not coming here sooner.
BOI-OI-OING! That was my steamy, sexy, Russian accent with gratuitous cleavage review.
BEER CLUB!!!
Drink 57 beers and document them on the sheet, and you get your name on a plaque, on the website, a tee-shirt, AND a $1 off all future beers. - 2 of my friends have accomplished this feat.
Drink 114 beers, and you'll get your name and picture on a stool - YOUR STOOL. So no matter how crowded Stanton Public is, you'll always have a seat. - 1 of the aformentioned friends has done this. God bless him.
There's a lil outside 'garden' aka cement hole and the food is meh, though...but the beer...the glorious beer! You can't argue with a rotating selection of 42+ keg, draft, and bottled beers.
I'm basically ditto'ing everyone elses comments.
Great beer selection
Nice big outdoor patio
DJs on some nights
Friendly, chill vibe in a nice (and clean) pub atmosphere, not dive at all
No hoity toity-ness
I'm sure there is an excellent beer selection here, but the roommate and I were too excited about the $5 PBR/shot of whiskey special to try 'em out. (Does this make us completely trashy? Several people in the bar seemed to think so, and were open about how shocked and appalled they were to see people drinking beer from a can. Who are these people?) But really: why aren't more people talking about this? There's also a "bring 10 friends on your birthday, drink for free" deal. You guys gotta pay more attention to these things!
I didn't go downstairs, but the upstairs was pretty fun, and the back patio was a nice touch! It really is a lovely spot on the LES.
So what seems like in the middle of no mans land, but actually on the brink of China Town a charming pub.
Happy hour till 8, and its a good happy hour.
Was there on a wed night for pre dinner drinks and post dinner drinks and me and my ladies owned the bar.
Free popcorn=awesome
Ghost hunter show on the discovery channel on the flat screen that opened up a great discussion on ghosts and their believability to then UFOs and aliens=awesome
Good times had by all
I LOVE Stanton Public! I've been going there since last summer. It was the 4th of July. A few of us stopped in, thought it looked like a cool place for a couple of beers before we went to see Mr. Brownstone. We were greeted by a beautiful, sweet and sassy bartender named Christina. We fell in love.
We all love beer. Stanton has an amazing selection! We quickly became friends with everyone that works there, became part of Beer Club which can get you a plaque on the wall (and a $1 off drinks for life if you drink 57 different beers) and soon after got ourselves our own stools because we drank 57 more beers- (hehe- yeah, we're lushes and have a good time being so!) Btw- 1st girl to get a stool;)!!!
The atmosphere is great. Lots of cool, laid back people. If you're looking to chill, meet some cool and sweet people- then this is the place for you.
My rating has just as much to do with the amount of fun I had here as it does with the actual merits of the bar. I had a big group here for my birthday on Friday night. There was great music, it wasn't too terribly crowded, had a cool atmosphere without being too "scene," was casual without being generic. Overall a very chill, crowd-pleasing place.
I can't speak personally on the service since i wasn't buying drinks, but I was disappointed when we relocated to a semi-private seating room downstairs and no one came down to take orders (there was a sign indicating that they would do so). So my friends had to annoyingly make trips back upstairs anytime they wanted a drink. Other than that-- fabulous!
tons of beers. TONS. and a big garden area outside. Great place for a party. I've dropped in on weird nights where they had pretty good DJs.
the rasberry lambic tastes like Crystal Light that gets you drunk.
If you like beer, check this out. it's the kind of place where I feel ashamed to NOT get a beer. you know what I mean.
Came by for Ommegang beer night. $2 off is an alright special, on a pretty good beer, but they only had three on tap. Okay, so that's not too bad after all. and since one of them was the chocolate- the special was a pretty good one.
but one time promotion aside, the beer selection is great. They have Delirium Tremens on tap and a superb selection of less common draughts and foreign bottles. The prices were fair for the area.
The bar area is small and tight- but nice. Tasteful, and on the loud side. There's a bar out back but it was more packed then a train at rush hour. and when I say like a train at rush hour, I'm talking the middle two cars at about 5:05 pm.
This is a great bar with an interesting crowd as the night goes on. Prior to going to Freeman's we stopped in to get a drink and loved the choices of beers that they offered. In addition, I loved that they had interesting beers that were almost like a cocktail (there was a guiness/blue moon mixture - who would have thought of that mix up). Coming back after our dinner, what was a nice bar turned into more of a lounge that had great music and of course the drinks were still really great. We had a chance to talk to one of the managers and to learn more about it. It's definitely a great place to go to begin or end the night and they have a lot of specials (I love that the menus are written on large boards that are throughout the space). This is definitely a great place to go.
3.5
cool spot with a great patio area in the back.
So my first experience with the Stanton Public was this past summer when my friend decided to have her birthday celebration there. We went a week earlier to check the place out. Apparently some Guido idiots from Jersey had come in the week before and caused quite the scene. The manager was very concerned whether or not my friend would bring suitable lower east side/ east village kids to the party. Who wants to hang with Guido kids anyway?
To the review... The back patio is a perfect chill spot for the warmer months. It's a very relaxing atmosphere with lots of seating for you and your friends. Excellent beer selection, both on tap and in bottles. Can get pretty crowded. I wouldn't recommend Stanton Public if the weather's not nice. We went once when it was getting colder outside and everyone was crammed inside. We didn't stay long that night. But dfinitely check it out once the weather gets warm again.
I was there for all of 20 minutes tonight, and it gets 5 gazillion stars already.
1. Happy hour from 4-8 pm.
2. Happy hour Saturday 6-8 pm.
3. Happy hour Sunday. ALL DAY. And all of the night.
4. It's your birthday! Take yourself and 10 friends to Stanton Public and drink free all night. ALL. NIGHT.
It's a very cozy place, and I bet it does get packed. There is a small garden in the back, and great music. Chalk boards all over the place advertise the huge amount of beers they have along with their alcohol by volume. So you know exactly what you're getting into. Lots of different beers on tap, and a menu of others with descriptions. This would be a good place for Brian K. That's what I thought as soon as I saw the menu.
Screw the laundry. I'm so there this Sunday.
PS - I'm also so there on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until 7. When you see the bartender (assuming it's the bartender who said he'd be working then), you will thank me. Yum.
Last Friday at this bar, we used math to establish that it would be okay for Rob to touch my boobs.
Uh...WTF?
Yeah. It was one of those nights. Allow me to expand a bit...we were discussing a certain party at a certain Yelper's apartment the weekend before. I mentioned a conversation I had with Nina and Joolie where we were essentially comparing...boob firmness. THEN, a guy whom we had just met that night comes up and says jokingly "I want in on this...!" and, after we laugh (slightly uncomfortably) and explain, PROCEEDS TO GRAB OUR BOOBS WITHOUT SO MUCH AS A BY-YOUR-LEAVE. Uh...hello?!
Anyway, here at Stanton Public, I was saying that it was offensive not so much because of the boob grab but because I didn't know him. At this juncture, Maria touches my at-this-point-overexposed boob, and I say "see? that's fine -- I KNOW Maria," at which point Rob says "so that means it'd be okay if I were to touch your boob, then." My response:
"Not necessarily...I don't necessarily know YOU like that. However....if you were to be allowed to touch MARIA'S boob, then...by the TRANSITIVE PROPERTY, theoretically you should be able to touch mine, too. If the ability transfers from Rob -- Maria -- Audrey, then Rob -- Audrey would make sense."
At which point Rob touches Maria's boob and says "Like this?"
"Yup, like that."
Hello, transitive property!
Throughout this exchange, there is an artsy black-and-white film on IFC playing on the flatscreens above (complete with arthouse rough sex and black-and-white boobies) and indie-ish, angry-ish music is playing from the speakers. Boasting a wide variety of drinks for you to imbibe, Stanton Public offers something for everyone, it seems. And, quite honestly, an all day Sunday happy hour IS for everyone.
I enjoyed my time here, boob-grabbing and all, and will *ahem* fondl...y remember it as probably the only place in New York where math has been used to "get some."
The run down:
Small but Cozy
Nice garden in the back with ample seating and standing room
Big beer menu with many over 5%
17 taps
Happy hour all day Sunday
4-8 happy hour Mon-Sat
Your birthday? No problem, bring 10 friends and you drink for free all night
The bottom line: a definite must-go place. I can see this place filling up quickly, and space coming up short, but there is plenty of room outside, and waitresses to assist you in your refills.
Reminds me of my hometown bar Effin Gruven (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
brought a large crowd for my bday last night... very accommodating, good music, my favorite beer on tap, and a stamp on my hand that let me drink for free. wheeeeee!
prices were reasonable too. woot.
What can I say? This is easily my favorite bar in NY. Great beer selection, great staff, great music. Always a good time. It's a cool after work place for happy hour and it's awesome later on a Thurs/Fri/Sat nights for the sweet DJ sets.
Oh, one thing to note though, if I get there and you're sitting in the bar stool with my plaque on it (Beer Club member), I'll be expecting a beer as compensation...
I was here over the weekend with friends and had a good time. The drinks are cheap, and there's a decent-sized patio out back with tables.
The DJ played a good mix of music, and it wasn't filled with too many gramercy douchebags yet.
Stanton Public has some of the friendliest bartenders I've ever encountered. The entrance leads you to the bar where most of the action happens. Seats line the wall, but allow for pretty good standing room. Downstairs, there are a ton of couches and tables, but on the night I went, nobody was really there. I am slowly realizing I can't really justify the rating, but I had such fun here I could only give it a 4.
Really wonderful beer list. Good heated patio for chilly nights. However: this place is really two different bars depending on when you go. After work weekdays is nice and quiet and a place to enjoy a new beer and some good conversation. I stepped in last with some friends for a drink around midnight and, while not crowded (we were able to snag one of the picnic tables on the patio), the patrons were frat boys and B&Ters who either couldn't get into a velvet rope club or were just prepping to do so. Hideous club like music was being played and the tiny mirrored disco ball on the patio tent ceiling set the very, very sad theme to this place on a Saturday evening. Conclusion: go for great beer before the meatheads and airheads show up.
One of the great things about yelp is that you can walk into a restaurant/bar and act like a regular: "Do you have pumpkin beer tonight?" "Is the patio open tonight?" (answers: No. and yes but it's freezing cold despite being enclosed and semi-heated)
A few friends and I wandered in here tonight. We looked around at the dimly lit space and the cool menu on a chalkboard. The place was pretty empty and we were unsure of whether to stay or go. Obviously we stayed, and I'm really glad. The drink selections were excellent. I ordered a green apple cider that was awesome -- highly recommended. The music was fantastic, the atmosphere very comfortable, the bathroom was surprisingly large and clean and well stocked.
I hope to drag some more friends here soon.
Very cool, low-key spot. Friendly people, good crowd. Love the enclosed smoking patio, too. :)
Oooh - and very yummy pumpkin beer!
Delirium!! the Drink of choice over there....two of these will do you right...Service is pretty good even though it's packed on the weekends. The outdoor space is TINY so get there early to get a good table. There is a downstairs with a cute lil private room where you can take pics of your drunk friends and write on there faces when they fall asleep b/c of the comfy seating area.
I like this beer garden, very laid back and relaxing. They have a good list of beers and the outside area is quaint and comfy. I had two wheat beers, Allagash and Heiveweisen (sp?), both very good. They also have DTs, if you like them. Nice place to go on a summery night :)
Came here prior to going to 205 Club on a Friday night. We were chilling with the "money-taker-girl" at 205 and asked where a little dive bar where we could go pound some shots. She sends us to Stanton Public.
Dive bar it's not. Anywhere that charges $8 for a beer classifies as a "pretentious wannabe neighborhood bar". Now I understand they apparently have a happy hour, but I wasn't there during it.
The interior is actually pretty cool - I felt like I was in an old A-frame upstate. Beer selection was fantastic - they had DT and Hofbrauhaus! The even have the hofbrauhaus "boot" that you can drink out of but they charge you $70 to do it (it's about 2 beers). Honestly, what is that all about?
I was just really turned off by the place in general - we headed over to 205 and ended having a rousing good time.
Maybe I'll stop back in the summer for happy hour when the patio is open.
So i looked up places on Yelp in the EV/LES area that had an outdoor garden and happy hour. This had the highest ratings so i checked it out. Happy Hour on weekdays is 4-8pm so i rolled in about 6pm before it got crowded. The backyard was nice but it was kinda humid out so we chilled inside. It was dim, the music was chill, and the bartender was friendly. Five stars might be toooo generous but i had the best time here. Mostly because who i was with but this place is definitely me and i'm coming here alot more often.
Great bar! The staff is always friendly and chatty, the beer selection offers something for everyone, and the DJs spin awesome indie and new wave. And let's not forget the outdoor seating in the back which is open year round - one of my favorite places to spend a night catching up with friends over beers and smokes.
i came here last night with a friend just for a few beers and dinner and to eat outside since it was so nice. buuuut their back patio was cool (they started showing an old b&w movie later on), but it was all closed in and had no music playing out there. so it was like we were sitting on my friends porch while the people next door were having a party. food was good, but a little pricey for the serving size.
great beer selection though, so i want to take a star off for the patio, but i'll add one for the beer selection. if you like good beer and a big variety, come here, and the bartender was more than helpful to talk about some beers and to offer some suggestions.
but i'm gonna have to take a star off (probably my own fault), just because the crowd was basically older, just-off-work, dressed up people, annnnd that's not me really. maybe if i worked in the city it would be, but they were definitely older (30s-ish and up maybe).
overall a good time, would come back for the beer, the back patio (when its open?), and the bartenders, just not for dinner.
came here for the beggars-matador cmj after party but i guess i was late? who knows. anyway, we were just standing around and a waitress came up to us to get drink orders, and helped us look for one of the bands that was supposed to be dj-ing that night.
well, we didn't get drinks and we didn't find the band, but i'm giving this place 4 stars anyway because i really liked the decor, the little outdoor section (mostly smokers, obv), and everyone was so nice! the waitress was nice, the bouncers were nice, the guy with the party list was so nice.
on our way out, the bouncer had a hard time unclipping the rope so i was about to just climb over it but he insisted on letting us out properly. haha... anyway, yeah, i'll definitely go back.
