It had been years since I had visited Stanley's and enjoyed Scheroves, a combination grilled ham, cheese, and brisket sandwich. On a recent visit, I ignored the kids votes to go to McDonald's and headed for Stanley's. Red meat is not really part of my diet anymore, I try to watch my cholesterol when I can, but with little else to do in Tyler, I caved in to temptation.

Stanley's was as busy as I remember it, possibly a little busier due to them recently receiving a very favorable mention in Texas Monthly for top BBQ 2008, but the counter help was friendly and helpful. The big surprise was their Big Swimmer sandwich, a grilled tilapia sandwich with lettuce tomato and guacamole on a jalapeno bun that was just tremendous! It would have satisfied my appetite and limited my cholesterol intake, but I couldn't get away without a Scherove as well. It was just as I remembered it.

A special kudo to their hot sauce: It was a nice balance of spice and taste. Not for the feint of heart, but it adds some POP! to your BBQ.

I rarely regret not living in Tyler anymore, but besides family, Stanley's is one of the few things worth coming back for.

If I'm ever in Tyler, TX again I'll eat here. Even though they were having power issues the food was great and the folks were awesome. I had the regular Scherove (grilled ham, cheese and pulled pork on a bun). It was really filling too. Stop here if you get the chance.

There really isn't better BBQ anywhere in the world- this place has a great atmosphere and even better food. The owners really care about their customers. BYOB on Friday nights with live music on the patio makes this the perfect place for summertime. Soon they'll be serving breakfast and I can't wait!

The best BBQ in town. I don't really like BBQ, but I will eat Stanley's BBQ. Its great.  The brother in law is the sandwich to get. Chopped BBQ & hot links with cheese on a burger bun. The sauce is great and they send pickles & onions with you.

I have been eating here since I was a little girl.  Every time we drive through Tyler on our way to visit Grandma and Grandpa in Palestine we stop here for BBQ. The Barbecue brisket sandwich melts in your mouth like butter..

If you live in or are passing through Tyler don't miss this place.....

About This Business

Specialties

Stanley's is the oldest operating Mom & Pop BBQ Joint in Tyler, Texas.  Serving up true, pit smoked BBQ for over 50 years. Come try our perfect brisket, baby back ribs, turkey, sausage, and even pulled pork. Stanley's offers some other selections such as fish tacos and even has vegetarian items. Catch a great touring band when the weather is nice (Live Music is Seasonal). Stanley's is only open for lunch and since we take pride to produce all our barbecue and sides fresh each day, we occasionally sell out due to heavy and unanticipated guest traffic.

History

Established in 1958

Stanley's has been family owned and operated since 1958.  The site where Stanley's sits today, was a BBQ restaurant for two previous owners before being bought and renamed by J.D. Stanley in the late 50's. The history of BBQ is long and strong in this spot.

Meet the Business Owner: Nick and Jen P.

Nick & Jen Pencis took over the business in 2006 after the death of founder JD Stanley left his family unable to continue the operation.  Nick & Jen have kept the spirit of JD's recipes and methods alive, as well as adding their own flare to the joint. They have since been recognized by being named "ONE OF THE BEST BBQ JOINTS IN TEXAS" by Texas Monthly Magazine and finding their story published in David Gelin's book "BBQ Joints: Stories and Secret Recipes from the Barbecue Belt".
