What a fun shop! We saw the reviews on Yelp and decided to make a special trip to visit. It was well worth it. They have some cute and unusual items, gift and of course, lots of books and maps. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable.
The cafe where we enjoyed a pot of green tea was very cozy.
We'll go back on our next visit to London.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Monique F.Haarlem, The Netherlands1158361647May 17, 2015
We love bookstores, and especially those with travelguides only. If you can't find it, it probably doesn't exists. And it will probably be wiser to look for an other destination.
Besides travelguides and maps they also sell themed novels and photo books, and funny books. They have a small assortiment of travel needs like plugs. In the cellar you'll find some globes. Beautiful but expensive.
The store has two floors. Don't forget the cellar which houses the travelguides and maps, in alphabetic order by continent.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Suzy V.Silver Spring, MD13111Sep 4, 2018
This shop has everything for the traveler, no matter where the destination. I could've spent all day here! The map room upstairs is outstanding, and the staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. If you're looking for a travel book, map, or just a thematic novel to take on your holiday, you must stop at Stanfords.

Among my top 2 specialist bookstores in London at the moment. (the other is the one at the Wellcome Collection premises)
3 floors of travel and London related books. Lonely Planet and DK EyeWitness are obviously all available, but they are just the tip of the iceberg among the selection available here. Other than the guides and maps, they have fiction and non-fiction from specific regions too and a sprinkling of cookbooks.
Travel guides and travel accessories (toothbrush covers, walking sticks, waist pouches, games for kids to play when traveling - the range is vast) make up the bulk of the collections.
Half the top floor is the frame-able maps and globes section. Very reasonable and loads to choose from. I also love their travel themed furniture - if only I could fit them into my pokey London apartment....
The staff is extremely helpful and not in the least bit pushy, so its always a pleasure to shop here. They often have a couple of discounts running and a few author signed copies.
There are quite a few London themed souvenirs on offer that are much higher quality than the 2pound stuff available elsewhere.
Its a great place to pop in for a respite or hunt for your next holiday trip. And there is a coffee shop - Sacred Cafe - on the premises if you want to give your feet a rest.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 365611378Mar 26, 2012

Excellent for maps and travel guides for esoteric spots as well as the familiar. I often come here to check out maps of Asian sites that are hard to find in Asia, for instance, bilingual China maps.
Also very good for trekking maps including Patagonia, Tibet/Nepal.
One of the planet's best travel resources.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Brian C.Pinner, United Kingdom132446288Mar 13, 2016
Stanfords is one of my favourite shops in the whole world. Because it sells possibilities, just shelves and shelves of possibilities. Everywhere there are more books about places you haven't yet (but possibly could) travel to. So for a holiday junkie like myself, this is just the cathedral of travel at which I worship.
I'm still working my way through the more normal places to visit, but with the stunning range, I know Stanfords will still be there to support me when I finally start to visit some more obscure places that are seldom covered. Heck, they even have a travel guide to Wisconsin (although just the one!).
But it isn't just travel books, they of course do maps, but what I also enjoy is their quality range of globes. I love globes, I had one as a kid and I would just imagine going to all the different places on it before I went to bed. Sadly I don't have one anymore, but the semi-topigraphical ones at Sanfords took me right back to those childhood dreams. Plus they also have those crazy big travelling trunks that made me want to be Tom Hanks in Joe versus the Volcano. I just somehow need the cash to buy 10 of them, some rope to tie them into a raft and then I'm all ready for the south Pacific!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Andres R.London, United Kingdom7109May 11, 2016
I'm a motorcicle traveler thru Europe and have found great support in maps, map books and travel books for just about everything, from cities to mountains, routes, adventures by other travelers, regional foods, etc.
I also travel to America and lately southeast Asia...and also get info for those...
Just great!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sarah A.London, United Kingdom215019Jul 6, 2016
So this place is AMAZING.
A little off the bookshop track, more Covent Garden than Charing Cross, but super fascinating, they specialise in travel books/maps, the different globes they have downstairs are so cool, unfrotunately a lot of them were my monthly take home or above, so not really in the affordable category. I was actually here for a book launch so didn't get the opportunity to do much shopping but as a venue and browse around it was incredible, also a big thank you to the staff for allowing wine and refreshments around all those beautiful maps and travel books.
Definitely a place to visit for payday.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kate M.Wheaton, IL1515Aug 19, 2015
Dear Stanfords,
With bed roll in tow, I come to you asking for a little corner, just a tiny one, so that I can move in and never leave. Your book selection is heaven, your booksellers knowledgeable and helpful, and your travel book selection inspirational and extensive. Travel and books together under one roof - I feel we are kindred spirits and would make excellent flat mates. Surely you won't mind if I settle in on the balcony with the used books?
Many thanks,
A loving admirerHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
