Review from Connie L.
A beautifully-restored historic landmark in the heart of downtown Sacramento. Well worth $5 for the hour-long, docent-led tour. A remarkable glimpse of middle/upper-class life in early twentieth-century California. Unfortunately, the mansion is slated for closure sometime next July, along with a slew of other state parks...go here before you miss it!

A gem of history and architecture in the middle of the city. For only $5, you get a thorough tour of the mansion. It will be like stepping in a time-era motion picture as you walk through the ballroom, parlor room and bed rooms of this lovely house. My only criticism is the movie shown at the beginning of the tour was a bit too cheesy, and our tour guide, while very good at their job, seemed a bit snooty about the mansion. But, they were still very informative and had some insightful stories about the Stanfords and the Lathrops. This site is definitely worth the visit and the price!

For just $5 an hour-long tour of the Stanford Mansion is well worth it (even if you are a Cal fan). If you only have time for one mansion tour whilst in Sacto, I would highly recommend this over the Governor's Mansion.
The Victorian-era mansion is the type of thing you would expect to see on the east coast. It's been fully restored to its former glory with its original furnishings (smartly stored in the attic during the building's tenure as an orphanage). This isn't on the scale of Hearst Castle or anything like that but every room has been painstakingly recreated to look as it did when the Stanfords lived there and it is gorgeous.
The tour guides (docents?) are very knowledgeable, providing you with tons of background on the Stanfords and California history, and are happy to answer any of your questions. The visitors center offers some historical displays and a video and has a nice little store as well. Just remember that admission is cash only. -

OMG! Fabulous. I have trying to see this place for years. It is either closed, being restored, or I just miss it. UGH!
BUT, so I finally made it. STUNNING! Don't miss it!
You will learn so much history from the railroad, to politics to family life to what the house became in it's later years. The victorian furniture is ALL ORIGINAL. How cool. The carpet is a reproduction and a good one. All the light fixtures are original to the home. They are similar to the Capitol, but the Capitol lights are reproductions. I love original stuff, makes the history of a place come alive.
You tour the whole house, top to bottom. Our guide was Phil...he ROCKED!
It is a $5 admission. Worth it. If it was free, you would still want to pay to get in.
Another fabulous place, brought to you by California State Parks. -

Fantastic visit! It was only the two of us on this sunday afternoon, so it was like a private tour! The guide was really interesting, it showed that she knew her stuff better than anyone. Her explanations were full of insights and personal views, it took the tour to another level.
The Mansion itself is a work of art, a beautiful house that I would love to own! Unfortunately for the house, a stupidly big and awful building was built just behind it in the 70s.
They also have quite a lot of informative videos in the information center in the "backyard". A must-see. -

Sacramento, CA
In the past 2 years I've toured the Stanford Mansion about 4 times. Each time I learn something new and each time I leave thinking "Wow! That was so interesting!"
I am a history buff- I love learning about how people lived "in the olden days". Touring the Stanford Mansion gives you some great insight on early Sacramento and the Stanford family.
The docents/Interpretive staff at the mansion have so much interesting knowledge that they are all too happy to share. Everything from clothing, furniture and architecture to family dynamics and social-political and economic structures of the time.
I highly recommend paying the $8 to tour the mansion. It takes about an hour and it is really worth it. The mansion is operated by the Department of Parks & Recreation and is still used by the Governor and executive staff today. -

An amazing tour or the house made the experience worthwhile. The house is absolutely beautiful and by going on a tour you'll develop an appreciation for the beauty of the home. You'll learn about the history of the house, from a place where the Stanford family lived to a house for young girls. The rooms are decorated wonderfully and it's a definite stop if you're in the Sacramento area.
