I generally don't like sports bars (mostly because I can't abide large crowds of loud white people) but I could definitely hang here. I was there on a Saturday night, and nothing big was going on, but you kinda get the sense that they care. Witness all the various team logos plastered on every inch of the wall (including a Giants shirt, Cal flag, and an Swisher/A's sign). I like other bars in the area better, but if there's some sports going on that I want to see, I'd definitely swing by here.

I'd give it more stars if I liked beer more. For anyone who loves beer or sports bars this is a great place. Homey feel. Reminded me of college days.
They only serve beer and wine, but the bartender was a nice guy and for people who love football, it's definitely a nice place to go. It wasn't crowded when I went either.

Standings is a sports mecca. It's a shrine to all the happiness that sports create for their fans.
I don't care who wins. I hope your team wins, because you care. Sometimes I hope the Cal bears win, because I care a lot about them. What I truly care about is cheering, is jeering, is drinking, is having a wonderful time. Standings has more spirit in its little bar than every cheer-leading squad I've ever known; here I have learned why sports are important to our culture. It gets busy on big game nights, but is a cozy neighborhood spot on other nights.
No meat-heads, no no-necks, no lame college boys doing shots - no shots. Just really awesome domestic micro-brews (and bud light for when you need a breather round, football can go all day) and a likelihood for free food. Check the website for schedules of crazy beer and team related events. Beers are $6 each, which is reasonable- it's Manhattan.
Disclosure: I work here.
Disclosure: I will mock you for ordering bud light, because it's gross and you're afraid of good beer.
If you don't see a game on, ask the bartender nicely- you'll probably get to watch it, unless of course, the bar is totally packed and every screen is already taken. Just ask.
If you don't know the beers, ask the bartender to help you find something you like. Refer to beer styles by flavor (malty, hoppy, mild, sweet) not color, which rarely has much to do with taste. Drink things on tap.
No matter what, come ready to meet the kind of people you wish hung out in sports bars. Smart, interesting characters, who really really know their teams, love their teams, and are in it to win it. Also, this is the kind of bar where you can talk to people you don't already know... what's the word.. Friendly! ha!
Bonus: free pizza fridays. I'm serious.
I'm about to go there right now to kick-off the start of my California Golden Bears football season. It's awesome that a bar can devote so much energy to just several groups of people (they host a lot of alum events, including UC Berkeley). You can tell that the people who run this joint genuinely CARE for their customers. There's free pizza for everyone, and the bartenders make intelligent and meaningful conversation with you. Maybe I just have a soft spot for this tiny bar, because it reminds me of college and old times on game days.

Did this place always go by this name? Oh who knows. But yeah, this place isn't terrible. I've been a few times and it's one of those places that prides themselves on having hundreds of different beer varieties and every time you order something you do so by number and then the bartender radios to some dude in the basement who then passes the bottle of beer up through the floor. The problem with this place is that they never have what you want and you wind up picking eight different kinds of beer until you just settle for some Sam Adam's brew. This was the place where I had the worst beer of my life, Sierra Nevada's Big Foot Ale. It tasted like someone put a cigarette out in a jar of molasses and then chilled it for a few minutes. Disgust for that beer aside, this is an all right place.

8 dollars got me the beer sampler.
It is hands down the best deal in Manhattan that I received.
We'd stopped in just to use their restrooms and ended up with delicious beer and a wonderful bartender to keep us company.
Thanks!

I used to go here every weekend in college because it was always dead unless someone was throwing a party there. the beers were expensive but varied, ask for a beer list and take a look at I think was a Belgian import that costs a few thousand dollars for a bottle and you have to make an appointment.
I used to call this place Brewsky's for some reason, I don't know if it was always called Standings. I usually had a good time here, the bartenders were always nice and friendly, and there's a tv for games and stuff. Its very old school, if you want a great beer list where they have to go downstairs to get it from the stash and a mcsorley's feel with less people and some music, this place is down the block.

One of my favorite little haunts in New York. When I say "little," I mean it. Like, barely move your elbows in either direction without hitting the walls little. Like, make 3 steps in any direction and you may end up in some other bar on this block.
But its size adds to the character. The beer selection is small, but it's all microbrews. There are many special theme nights throughout the year with regional beers and free food. Plus, there are enough TVs to go around for any sports fan that walks in. I once asked them to throw on a Canadian Football game - and they gladly complied, despite puzzled looks from fellow patrons.
Stop by Standings, but don't take your friends. I need my breathing room.

I was walking to one of my usual haunts, Burp Castle... I popped into Burp and saw it was full and noisy - not what I was really in the mood for. I was heading back the way I came and passed the bar next door, which I knew in the back of my head was somehow "connected" with Burp Castle.
I looked through the gating and saw football on the television. Normally this would have sent me packing - I am not much of a fan. I noticed though, that it was Cal (UC Berkeley) playing against UCLA. I peered at the score, saw that my Bears (I went to Berkeley) were doing a pretty good job of trouncing the Bruins, and then started to walk away. As I turned to leave I noticed a couple people inside wearing Cal paraphernalia - and then it hit me - this is where all the Cal alums come to watch games! Rachel (main bartender @ Burp) had once told me that.
So I ventured inside the THOROUGHLY packed bar. I could barely get 3 feet beyond the door. It was FULL of Cal fans. I watched the game for a bit and then some (cute) girl spilled beer on me! So I headed towards the bar for a napkin and noticed that Rachel was working the bar! w00t!
As I squeezed my way through the mass of humanity towards the bar, a girl accidentally close to groping me - I made some comment about barely even knowing her and moved on... I turned around a few moments later and we both had one of those "aha" moments. I knew her from Berkeley, classes and extracurriculars and such. We ended up talking for a good chunk of time...
Wow. Talk about serendipity! This is the bar of happy coincidences...
Now, for the important stuff: the beer! They have a fairly good selection of microbrews on tap. That's cool... The other nice thing is that they share the basement beer storage with Burp Castle! So you can get the same bottled beers as you can get at Burp! Score!
Great microbrews, solid bottle selection, Cal alum hangout! Rock on!
(Yes, I am cruel: I knocked it a star because its a sports bar - just don't like them...)

Gary runs a great real ale sports bar...one of a very few in Manhattan. The bar is a mecca for football and baseball but you can find pretty much any major sporting event on one of the 20 TV 's if it's taking place whilst you're there. The range of beers changes weekly and is kept in excellent condition. The bar is very small and has a friendly local feel, Gary often has special nights offering things like free pizza or similar. - The only thing I can say against it is they don't like the Yankees...they're Boston/Mets fans.
Well worth a visit.
I had a great time last night at Standings. I liked the crowd and I liked the space. It's small and we had a hard time finding it, and that's a very good thing in my book. The people who surrounded me were interesting, friendly, and unpretentious, and I was able to strike up some decent sports conversations, which are hard to find these days.
It's an almost square front room (which is the only room), the bar flanks the far wall and seating is all around the perimeter. No matter where I was at I had a great view of the Championship Basketball game on some crystal clear tv's. I felt like I was one of the few that wasn't a regular, but maybe that won't be the case anymore.
There are several interesting to obscure small brews, maybe 6 to 8 on tap, including Magic Hat no.9, Blue Point, and some other local offerings that I can't quite remember as they were mainly provided by friends. All beers are $6 dollars a pint. I was upset that no food is offered--as I was starving--but Standings is a true bar, and it doesn't pretend to be anything else.
It's a great place to go with an old buddy, and it has a great college atmosphere that isn't an "I'm in college" atmosphere.

Wow, I can't believe I didn't review this bar already! Thanks, Shane for reminding me about it!
I love Standings--it's a cozy (yup, I mean tiny) sports bar in the East Village owned by a really cool guy that just wanted to start up a bar where a bunch of people could get together with their fellow college alums, drink good micros and chill.
I went to Standings not too long after they had first opened. I remember it well...(insert Wayne's World flashback "dodododo" waves)
...January 2, 2006. My beloved UF Gators were playing Iowa, and I didn't feel like hauling it all the way to our official home (the Gin Mill). Word had gotten out that there would be something going on at Standings--so my boyfriend and I headed over. Early. Because at 10am on a Saturday, you need a beer to watch your sad, erratic college team lose to the Hawkeyes.
We got there just after the owner, and had the place to ourselves for a while (the game didn't kick off til noon). The owner was great and had brought out Gator gear for all of us. He also brought in a spread of eggs, bagels, and bacon to go along with our beer (because Standings doesn't have a kitchen). The micros were a good variety (I found some beer that was like UFO and stuck with it). The owner/'keep was awesome throughout our six hour stay, and the place was very comfy to watch a bunch of bowl games. I've been back a few times since (not so early!) and always had a great time.
And, the Gators beat out the Hawkeyes too! So, I kinda look at Standings as my lucky location for post-season play. Don't be surprised if you see me there in January, early in the morning, downing a microbrew and munching on whatever warm food I can get:)

i really didn't expect to stumble upon a bar in the East Village that would bother showing a Cal football game. So as I'm walking from Astor Place to my friend's place during a visit to NYC in October 2006, lo and behold, I see I sign for the Cal/Oregon game in front of the bar. That was enough to draw me in later that evening for the game.
Be warned, it is a small place. Be prepared to stand. Despite the lack of space, there are enough televisions so that you may look in any direction to watch your game.
Seriously folks, what's with ordering Bud Light. There are so many other choices to select from. My friend and I solicited some reasons as to why, and we received pretty lame responses. Even the bartender was miffed by all the consumption of Bud Light. Goodness, there were other beers with similar alcohol content.
Cool thing for me was that I ran into someone who I hadn't seen in a year and had recently moved to NYC. So if you're a Cal alum, there is a chance that you'll run into someone, well, obviously only when the Golden Bears are playing...
College Football and the East Village, together at last. If you want to go someplace not too hard-core to watch some college athletics, this is it. They support a few teams in particular - Cal, Florida State, Marshall, Missouri, Gonzaga, the Mets - the list is longer than my memory. It's a great place to watch USC get their asses kicked.
GO BEARS!

great little sports bar. they have lots of sports memorabilia and paraphernalia on the wall, but not the cheesy kind. they had some really cool stuff (i wish i could remember something specific, but, hey, thats how it goes).
i also liked the beer selection. good micro brews, even a blueberry on tap. they also seem to give away a lot of free food. i happened to be in there on free hot dog night and they were going to have free pizza night soon (again, i wish i could remember when!).
standings is also conveniently located on my way home from the village which will greatly increase my likeliness of going back some night when i am on a walk home and need that last beer to carry me through.
