The awesome: This place has a really great vibe, a slick hipster version of a tacky, retro Southwest-desert motel, complete with (blue) astroturf by the pool, diner-style restaurant, and mini cacti in every room (not to mention an entire cactus-themed bar). The staff was incredibly nice. The music in the lobby/bar was so awesome that I kept turning on my Shazam iPhone app to go waste more money on iTunes. I also got a great cut and highlights at the hair salon, which is quite reasonably priced.
The not-so-good: The bedding isn't nearly warm enough, and while you can turn on air in the room, there's not any heat. The Internet is unreliable. No airport shuttles, so I had to take an obscenely expensive cab from LAX (though in retrospect, maybe I should have found if a nearby hotel had shuttle service and ganked a ride). And the food at the restaurant is O.K., but not excellent.
I booked my room using Quikbook, and it slashed 30% off the room rate for a stay of three nights or longer. I'd recommend checking for deals there.
If I could give it 3.5 stars, I would. There's nothing spectacular about this hotel besides the minimal 70's look, the blue astroturf pool area and convenient location on Sunset Blvd.
That said, there's nothing really bad about it either. The rooms were pretty roomy, the king sized bed was fairly comfortable and the three total floors made it fast and easy to get to the lobby.
I do have one gripe though: what's with the old grandma blankets? The top fleece layer felt like it had been washed so many times it resembled a dried-up chamois.
Amazing food at this updated hotel on Sunset Strip. Great location near the hot part of West Hollywood. Super trendy hotel lobby but nice rooms as well, especially if you get a good rate.
