This place is super cool.  The rooms are ginormous, well designed, and comfortable.  The hotel staff is very accommodating, too.  We were a little needy on check in, asking for more hangers and help trouble-shooting the light switches, and the staff was very helpful and fast.

The room rates are very reasonable as well, especially for how huge and nice they are.

The rooftop is great.  I didn't spend a lot of time up there but it's a fun place to hang out in good weather.  The food is good and the drinks are a bit expensive for the size, but well made.  It can get chilly up there earlier than it does down at street level, of course.

The only minor complaint is that you cannot self park your car, and the valets can be slow.  On one morning it took me over 5 minutes to find the valet to ask for my car so that I could get to work.  On top of the unpredictable LA traffic I have to budget extra time to find the valet.  I would have been happy to park the car myself and save the time in the morning by getting it out myself.

My husband and I just hosted our 30th birthday party (for 100 guests) at the Standard in Downtown LA and there were absolutely no regrets! The Catering Manager, Maria, was a pleasure to work with from the start. She was always prompt with her correspondences with me and was up front and honest with everything. The room we rented for the event was perfect for our White Party attire theme. The drapes were white, the room was spacious, and they had the coolest red lounge furniture. She also gave me the mezzanine for extra party space!

The food choices were fantastic. The presentation was very nice and the food was delicious. The staff was so friendly and diligent, from the bartenders, to the servers, to the front desk, to the valet staff. Everyone was very nice and helpful. I was very impressed with their security staff too. Since it was a private party, they supplied two layers of security. We had no issues with party crashers and our friends didn't get hassled.

I also booked a sleeping room (I booked an "X-Large" room but I think I was upgraded to the "Gigantic" room) for the evening. I've read so many negative reviews about the Standard but to me, they're not true at all. You really have to have the eye and appreciation for Andre Balazs' style. You also have to have the money. I can see why some people would hate the sleeping rooms, but only because that's not their taste and they're very expensive rates. Balazs' work is definitely my taste and I loved every little detail he put into every inch of the hotel. The décor has clean and sharp lines, very uncluttered and minimalistic, there's a big touch of what I think is a 1980's era theme with the furniture, silver venetian blinds, and even the toiletries that looked kind of PeeChee Folder-esque. My most favorite are the adult-themed stick figure signs posted throughout the hotel. So witty and funny! And the bed as so damned comfortable with the fluffy goose down comforter and pillows.

You also have to check out the bright yellow 24 hour restaurant and rooftop pool/bar. They're awesome, to say the least!

Overall, an A+ experience. If you have a lot of money and want that hip and chic hotel experience, I'd definitely recommend The Standard!

The bartender on the rooftop was a total douche bag, if I could, I kick him in the nuts, I would have.  -5 stars for rudeness

The views are amazing, take the city in, it's alive and throbbing +3 stars

The crowd was plentiful, good night +1 star

My date, was like 10 stars, maybe because he made me see stars?

The room, a little bizarre, everyone can see you shower and I was not too keen on the lack of privacy. Interesting to say the very least.....but the bed was super comfy and they have an Ipod dock, bring your tunes, do your own thing......

Overall a wonderful experience, I'll let the douchey bartender slide, since he proved he just can't handle the heat.

Add it up and it's well over 5 stars.........

*even if you don't get a room there, check out the rooftop at night*

This is one cheeky hotel :o)

The rooms are very modern, and even a little raunchy. The only thing that divides the shower from the bedroom is a wall-to-ceiling piece of GLASS. Everything is visible both ways. Intrepret that how you will. The little stick-people labels 'n stickers are hilariously sassy. Check out pics of the trashcans/ toilet paper rolls/ landline phones already posted by other yelpers if you're unsure of what I mean.

The room furnishings were decent and modern, but weren't all that comfy-don't expect to be sleeping on any Heavenly beds here. The bathroom fixtures were very basic (almost felt like a public restroom). Keep in mind that the rooms at The Standard aren't meant to to feel romantic or cozy, and they are DEFINITELY not family-friendly. It's a party hotel, with rooms that follow theme.

3.5 stars rounded down, because $15 for self-park is kinda HEFTY. Boooo :p Convenient location- within walking distance to Pershing Square, Metro station, and nearby Famima! store for snacks.

When you name  your hotel The Standard. It means you set the norm, requirement, or process of a hotel experience. Well I can say that The Standard Hotel does set the norm, requirement, or process of SUCKING.

I give it to The Standard that they  get the rep for being cool. But like popular high-school jock / cheer-leader. You're all looks with no brains nor substance. You wonder why the signage of The Standard is upside down. Well because everything here is upside down. From the Valet, Front Desk, Room, and Room Service. I don't know how ANYONE could and would give this hotel a rating above 1 Star.

Valet : ( 0 stars )
- You damn Hipster Ray Ban Wayfarer wearing wanna-be actors are SO incompetent of doing your job. You think you're SOoOoO cool. Doing us a favor for parking our cars. I could have went down the street to the Marriott and gotten 10000000 times better service. When you see someone driving into your parking lot.  Remember that I pay your rent, alcohol use, and substance abuse.

Bell Hop: ( 0 stars )
- Calling yourself The Standard, it's a STANARD to have a Bell Hop! I've been to third-world countries that had a person carrying each and every bag I had. Not saying that I'm too good to carry my own bags. But If I had 2 suitcases. How the hell am I going to carry my bags up 2 flights of stairs?

Front Desk: ( 2 stars, and I'm being nice )
- You sir, are to greet your guests. With a smile and a chirpy personality. I don't care if your baby mama's mama decided to send you a court letter saying you have to pay more money for child support. I don't care if your three legged dog just lost another leg. I don't care if your pet rock just diet. I paid good money to stay at your hotel.

Oh..and when I put down that I want a room with TWO queen size beds. It doesn't mean you give me a room with ONE queen size bed. How hard is it to go over my reservations in the first place to confirm the room and length of stay? I must think that you once  worked at the HoJo in East  Compton. Somehow you miraculously moved up the hotel food chain. Drove your beat up Caddy to DTLA and still think you could give shitty service behind a plexi-glass wall.

Remember you work at The Standard. The Standard for any front desk is to have a smile and #1 greet your customer.

The Room : ( 2-1/2 Stars )
- Now I know that this Hotel throws Dope Parties. But I don't want to walk into a room that smelled like a Dope Party. Room was clean. Decor was cool. Toiletries  were Dope. But behind the bed smelled like YACK!

Room Service / Conceierge : (1 Star )
- I don't even know why this hotel bothers to even have this option. It's not like you guys even want to pick up the phone. Me calling Valet to have my car ready doesn't mean when I get to down there I'll have to wait another 20 minutes!

All in all. I suggest that anyone considering staying at this hotel should STAY AWAY.  pAArtying here is cool. Drinking here is not bad. But staying here is a no no.

DTLA Stanard. You are The Standard at sucking.

**************
Rye's Notes:
- Park your car on the street. Valet SUCKS
- Don't Stay here. Just DON'T

I'm working off three hours of sleep guys, so please bear with me...

Aside from the mixed reviews, The Standard is COOL.
Valet was ever so curteous and offered to carry our bags up to the room, maybe because we tipped him TO park the car. Haha who knows but even this morning, my car arrived in a matter of minutes - holla!
Walking in to the front lobby, the space was very open and there were these fabulously swanky, obnoxious, Barney the Dinosaur purple colored lounge couches. Later on Saturday evening, DJ was spinnin' in the middle of the lobby some dope underground hip hop while a few people were hanging around, found some of my homies playing pool off to the side.
The front desk was great. Friendy, fast and responsive. Gave me extra band-aids because I broke a nail. The elevators were right at the entrance of the hotel off Flower St. - two thumbs up for not having to pass by front desk every single time!
Missed by one - ROOM 421: clean, minimal, modern and contemporary - just like my daddy's architectural steeze minus the Ikea looking chair and plastic side table. Our view overlooked DT L.A. high rises, the Metro and 110 Freeway. The king size bed was on a platform but very low to the ground, just the way I like it. I sat in bed for a good hour, listening to music and staring out the window in awe of my surroundings. FYI - the room includes an Ipod sound dock as well.
There is a lack of privacy as far as the bathroom goes, but hey, we've all seen naked bodies before. There are no doors, just sheer curtains - extremely sexy. Once again, very minimal - sink, tub and sectioned off toilet. No bathroom trashcan which I found odd. The tub was GINORMOUS. I mean, if a 6'1" man can spread his legs out and even sink into the water - you can imagine the size - perfect for two haha ;) T had ordered extra towels in which they arrived promptly. Because he left the "Do Not Disturb" sign - they simply left the towels by the doors and notified him via phone.
Only issue was I had forgotten my toothbrush, toothpaste and razor so I went to the store on the main level - total came out to $24.00. Yes, I felt robbed a bit but I was not in the mood to go elsewhere. At least my product packaging were once yogurt cups - always supportive of recycling!

$15 for self park? daaayam jigga!
for that amount of $, can someone please clean the parking lot? smells like piss walking up those stairs! yuck.

3 stars for the rest of the hotel (not including the rooms + restaurant):
- didn't go to the rooftop tonight (which is realllly nice btw)
- instead, celebrated a b-day party in one of the private rooms
- bathrooms: clean, BUT they don't have the toilet seat covers! what theee! ok, i subtracted another star just for that.

Things witnessed: crotch grabbing, ass grabbing, unconscious girls, puny man-boys dragging aforementioned unconscious girls around, guy falling down escalator FACE FIRST, bathroom brawls, old and creepy dudes flying solo and just "watching," FREAKISH Asian dude on E or some bad trip watching the movement and reflection of a light through his cell phone on lamps, walls, mirrors, his own face...for like an hour....seriously...girls complaining that there are too many "fat chicks" around.

Yes, people, my friend put it best when he sighed and said, "This place makes ME feel classy."  Ha.  ME too.

The lobby of this hotel on a Saturday night is a nightmare.  People who can't get in, or who are waiting to get in, or who just feel the need to lounge around a hotel lobby on a Saturday night are just plain weird.

Yes, there are big, plush, pink bed/chair things everywhere at different height levels for your seating pleasure, but the space itself is void of any comfort or entertainment.  There's a DJ in the center, but no one to really engage in the music.  There's this moving LED screen at the front, spewing out random weird quotes that really aren't worth reading, but burn through the retinas anyways since there's not much else to look at.

Drink service sucks.  People are rude.  Security is rude.  Organizers are rude.  What in the world is being projected on the wall?

My advice: get upstairs or go somewhere else.  It's really that simple.

Lov, Lov this hotel! This place is ultra modern & chic. The interior is bright 80's colors. A  fun yellow dining room and outdoor patio. Maybe, not so fun if you have a hangover!  You will probably have one if you party on the rooftoop. Gorgeous panoramic views of Downtown LA, crystal clear blue swimming pool, large enough for a big party. Perfect place on a hot summer night..

This hotel is affordable and really close to the freeway. I prefer staying downtown than in a Comfort Inn/ Hollywood.

If you are staying here for business, this place is a short walk to the Jewelry district, Biltmore Hotel, LA Public library and Starbucks is only 2 blocks away. However, there is quite a bit of noise from partiers. My room quieted down after 1:00am.

The rooms were clean and streamlined. grays, whites and a splash of orange. I like modern but wish they had a small soaking tub, extra bed pillows and a real garbage can in the bathroom, There is a large shower that is clear glass all the way around. The shower is large enough for your party but not so good to share with a co-worker.

The view was great from my room. Park  two blocks away for $15 a night at the Pershing garage instead of paying $28 a night that the hotel charges. I will def come back.

On my first visit, i wasn't offended by the decor as much as i was this time. it's just TIRED. they clearly haven't updated the place since that decor was completely unheard of. they need to get with it and step it up if they want to stay the happenin' place to be in downtown LA.

If you're on business, be sure to ask for a room on the front of the hotel. I got stuck in one on the back of the hotel and listened to the 20-somethings in line for the rooftop bar shriek and giggle until all hours of the morning.

The staff seems very indifferent about your presence, and i find it completely irritating.  Taking their sweet time to address you at the front desk and pretty much ignoring the issues you have with your room.

The rooftop bar is cool because of the view, everything else up there is again -- tired and totally overpriced.  if you are smart, you'll go Sun - Wed to avoid the next generation of "Less Than Zero" types that flock here.

reviewing the rooftop bar only (not the hotel or restaurant)

the people here are very friendly. (came during the day with a friend and was basically escorted to the roof)
the furnishings are getting old.
elevator is suspect.
drinks are overpriced.
the atmosphere is excellent.
expect to wait in line at prime times (thursday-saturday nights).

D and I came here for his birthday weekend, and it was a lovely stay.

Things we hated: smelly hallways, lockless bathroom doors (I got sick and D walked in on me throwing up, and I was not down with that), inconsistent housekeeping (sometimes they gave us new shampoo, sometimes they didn't...), fucking expensive snack/water in-room, not-very-nice carpet (but undderstandably so).

Things we loved: nice, plush beds with real down comforter, simple color palette, contemporary light fixtures, the whirlpool (yeah!!), spaciousness of rooms, free WiFi... basically everything other than what we didn't love. There are a plenty of sunlight, a wonderful restaurant on-sight, reasonably priced parking around, and nice, efficient staff (happened to love the scent of the shampoo and conditioner - yes a decent conditioner for your hair).

We dined in the restaurant downstairs for a late-night meal on D's birthday of March 7, and we were served by an attentive and very knowledgeable man who walked us through the menu (not very descriptive). We ordered a bunch of different items, a shrimp and avocado salad for appetizer, flank steak with creamed spinach and potato souffle, and free range chicken with mashed potatos and a few glasses of wine. Everything was good, although the dining experience was slightly eclisped by the fact that we were a little drunk and the restaurant was only half full and those people there were the bro/ho types. Real loud, obnoxious, and there to pick up their one night stand...

We enjoyed our time here. Probably the least in sync with our taste was the rooftop bar. While we both love and appreciate the interesting touches of contemporary design and modern decor and the amazing view from the top, the crowd was not for us. We're big electro fans and the night we went they played bad techno, and the bartenders were rude. Drunk people were hitting on us everywhere. Apparently gaining admission to this bar is important to some people, and as hotel guests we were given complimentary wristbands. A dude who wasn't staying here try to sweet talk me into taking him in as my date. These seem mostly to be the gold-high-heel, tight-hem-minidress-wearing alcoholic girls with equally lame i-shop-for-my-button-ups-at-express-and-still-wear -hair-gel kind of males. They're made for each other, and I'd like to stay out of that scene...

The sub-Standard is more like it. This place is all style, no substance...picture IKEA wrapped in Ed Hardy. We ran into so many problems during our two night stay it's almost comical.

First off, we booked our room because we were coming to LA to help host a birthday party poolside on Saturday. Long story short, even though we were repeatedly assured that there wasn't an event at the pool that day, we found out the day before that there was indeed a private party and that none of our guests would be allowed up. The whole time we tried to work things out, no one seemed the slightest bit concerned about our plight, we just got a shrug and an "Oh well, sorry"

Speaking of which, does the Standard have some sort of rule that they must hire only bitter people? From the front desk to the valets to the people who did absolutely nothing to help us figure out our party problem, everyone we encountered had a bad attitude (well, except for the maids...they were sweet. Go figure)

What else should you know? Hmmm. How about good luck parking at Valet Parking when an event is going on - despite being hotel guests we actually had to pay $10 to park across the street for a couple of hours because the Standard's lot was overflowing.

Two stars for the following - the roof top pool is pretty amazing and I was able to get a swim in on Sunday morning. Also, room service was pretty tasty (Grilled cheese with bacon? Hello!) albeit outrageously priced. But for the amount of money the rooms cost, you can definitely get better service and quality elsewhere.

I actually like this hotel. It is pretty LA and a bit over-hyped, but... I kind of enjoyed it. I got one of the bigger rooms and the bed was comfy and I really loved the decor. The staff, even security, was nice to me too, so I don't know what other people are talking about in their reviews. My co-worker (we were here on a business trip) had a humongous suite with cute orange couches, HUGE bathroom, and a gigantic foot in the middle of the bathroom.

The rooftop pool/lounge is beautiful. At night it looks cool when it's all lit up. They have these waterbed seat type things along the pool. Uh... don't go in those. Seen too many nasty things going on in there in one night.

So, the things that probably affect my review:

1. My trip was paid for. Looking at the site, the rooms are pretty pricey, but from my experience, the pricetag matches.

2. I didn't drive there, so I don't know what valet/parking is like.

Overall, I liked it, and I'm actually excited to be staying there again next week. Who knows, maybe I'll find something I don't like then.

OK so here's the situation. I'm not commenting on the rooftop bar. That's awesome. I'm writing a review of the hotel, which is terrible.

First of all, they didn't know where to look for my Hotwire reservation. They just seemed confused. Finally, after I called Hotwire, they found it. And the couple after me that flew in from Brazil - apparently their reservation was cancelled and the Standard couldn't find that either.

OK fine. What about the rooms? Well, there was a wet spot in the middle of the room - on the carpet. Not sure what it was...but it did not go away in the morning.

Then I go into the bathroom to check out the amenities and notice that the lotion has been used! So I call hospitality and I tell them so they send someone up. I should also mention that when I was checking in I asked for a couple of toothbrushes to be delivered to my room.

The hospitality dude comes up and brings me neither toothbrushes nor lotion. Instead he brings me shower gel and I notice that this was not even provided for me in the bathroom. So I make my request more clear and he finally brings me 80 bottles of everything.

Also the phone was cool and had fun little buttons on it but none of them worked. I had to dial each extension in manually and when I did it took me to the operator each time so really having extensions is pointless at this place.

I feel I should also mention that the bathroom has glass walls so don't try to go there with someone and expect privacy.

Basically my experience was not 4-star worthy. This is a 3 star hotel - tops. The rooftop bar is probably what gives it its good ratings.

This hotel might have been cool and innovative 10 years ago but it looks like they have been resting on their laurels too long. The daily room cleaning service was spotty, the front desk staff greets the hotel guests with what can only be described as an arctic chill. The rooms themselves look and smell dated, the couches look as if they have been in one too many parties.

The only bright spot was the roof top bar, the design of this outdoor space still feels as fresh as when it first opened.

With so many new boutique hotels to choose from in LA, I can't see why anyone who'd stay here would ever return.

Wanna immerse yourself underneath the LA city light ? With an amazing 360 degree view of downtown skyline? the Standard Hotel rooftop bar offers just the experience with a diverse crowd that reflects LA's cultural melting pot. Dance the night away underneath the city light bristling with the warm summer wind, then chill out by the pool in the water bed couches, the Standard will definitely satisfy the connoisseur in you.

If you are fiscally conservative, note that the cover is 20 and drinks run around 13-15 depending on the drink of your choice. I recommend pre-partying before getting to the entrance for you will end up waiting in line (both guys and gals). I Waited 10 - 12 mins in line, got to the rooftop around 1030, the place was not packed so the line was superficial. Place was jammin by 12. Go on the weekdays, no cover and plenty of people to mingle!

My only distaste was the DJ, the music genre did not flow, hopefully they'll book somebody better next time.

One word: FOUL.

I think my group and I would have been better off in a Motel 6.  I felt like I was in the set of a dirty porno during my entire stay.  Everything in the hotel (restaurant included) had a dirty look to it.  The "everything-must-be-white-and-stark" hotel room wasn't as crisp and clean as I'd imagined it would be.. there was a layer of dirt on everything and I felt extremely uncomfortable sleeping there.  The water out of the bathroom sink smelled like sulfur and my room in general smelled like vomit and Comet.  Blegh.  I HATED this place (as did all of my co-workers and friends).   Take my suggestion -- your $$$ should be spent at a much more luxurious hotel.  Standard is sub-standard and completely overpriced.

Don't get me started on this place. From day one it was a headache. The valet/car guy would not let us leave our car out front for FIVE minutes while we checked in and dropped off our bags!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He insisted that we pay $15 to park it. Give me a break. Does he know that he works at a hotel where guests have to CHECK IN.

2ndly, this hotel is full of douchey-club-types. The lobby looks like a red light district.

Roof top bar is a mess. Closes early. View is nice, if you go on a weekday it's tolerable. Otherwise forget it.

3rd: Rooms-small, bedding is outdated and itchy.

This hotel is too wannabe. I won't be back. And my friend agrees.

I will say that Terry at the front desk was helpful, and is the reason I am giving more than 1 star. One of the bellman was also very nice as well, once we got away from the asshole up at the valet. One final good thing about the hotel is that it has a 24-hour restaurant down by the lobby.

A night of drinking in LA is almost a 100% guarantee that I will wind up at some hotel. Why is that? Because I roll with "The Party Don't Stop" crew.
Unfortunately, the party continued to one of my least favorite hotels; The Standard. (Upside down).

The Standard (upside down) is just not my bag, man. This is one of LA's trendiest, overrated, overly annoying hotels where people dress up just to stand around on a rooftop listening to the "hits" and drinking $10 draft beer. The line just to access the rooftop bar is ridiculous. But not for hotel guests...so IN we were in a matter of seconds. Neener neeeeeener!

Before I dive into the rooftop portion of my review, let me touch on my actual room. Imagine sticking a bed mattress inside of a Pinkberry store. Plastic white chairs, flat screen T.V. on the floor...the bathroom had a nice size jacuzzi tub, but the shower was made for, I don't know, the vertically challenged?

There were two full body towels and one face towel available...one robe...no trash can inside the bathroom, no coffee maker...but plenty of candy, condoms and Mr. Bubble Bath for an absurd amount of money.

My favorite part was when I called the front desk and asked if someone would bring (enter private item here) up to my room. They happily obliged -- 20 minutes later, no one showed up with (enter private item here). I called again and they said someone would be right up...20 minutes later...nothing. So...room service kinda sucks. Oh and did you all know that this is A PARTY HOTEL? Yep. Expect to smell the Chronic and hear all kinds of screaming and laughter. Ahh, to be young and reckless again.

Our room was located right below the rooftop. Easy to access from our room...and thank GOD we couldn't hear the ongoings from our room. That would have sucked.

The Rooftop is:
Crowded. Loud. Girls. Boys. Smoke. Pool. Drinks. Security. Cholos. Girls.
I tried to ignore my surroundings and focused on the company at hand, the skyscrapers and buildings and traffic down below. It was a nice breezy night and I had a $9 tiny glass of vanilla and diet.

We hung out for a few moments, enjoyed the night and drank half a shot of Patron. *shiver*

Then my jam came on;

When I step on the scene
Ya'll know me, cause I walk with a limp
Like an old school pimp or a real og
I'm rocking VANS
I'm in the sand
I've a got a red bull and vodka up in my hand
Hey, you look kind of cute... in that polka dot bikini, guuuuuurl
Hey, this what I want to do, take off that polka dot bikini, guuuuuuurl.

Drink all day
Play all night
Let's get it poppin'
I'm in Miami bitch!
Drink all day
Play all night
Let's get it poppin' I'm in Miami bitch!

Other than that -- don't think I ever want to come here again. Trick!

The Yelp arbitrary star rating system has me down in the dumperoos, questioning the objectivity of ranking systems, upon which my dissertation methodology is partially based. Houston? Houston!!! We HAVE a Problem!

I Digress.

I am giving the Standard rooftop pool and affiliated bar and pool food 4 stars. Anyone who knows me beyong the etherworld of Yelpland is going to be like, "What? Angie gave the Standard rooftop pool and affiliated bar and pool food four stars???!!??" And here's the reason, the rationale: I took two Italian friends here today to celebrate the principle of midday drinking, and it was, of course, packed with skinny-ass girls in bikinis who "worked" at their bodies by combining the age-old methods of starvation and crystal meth. And cigarettes.

Me and my friends? We like nachos. And we look fine. FINE.

The skyline is pretty here, especially at night.

My two Italian friends were giddy with, well, glee. They were like, "finally, we are in L.A. It like Miami very much is!"

I replied, "yes, it is very much like Miami," while holding the barf in my mouth so as not to swallow.

They bounced around, hung out with the "tamarro" men (Italian men with gold chains, a serious strut, and no shirt - you know the type), and giggled, brimming with free well vodka drinks. I hid in a corner, smoked a j, and ate the worst hummus of my young life.

Four stars, Ang? Four? Yes. Because The Standard is the facet of Los Angeles often depicted in gangsta rap videos, which are the reason some people feel happy here, or visit here. It is real. It is plastic, but it is real. And here in Hollywoodland, that's not only possible, but it's fun. It is quintessential

Get to the hotel carrying about 4 bags and asked if someone can help me with my bags.  Valet guy says we can't do that.  We only have 2 valet guys, so I have no choice but to take it up myself.  Parking says $15.  By the time I leave the next morning it's $28 overnight parking.  The hotel decor is standard hence the name. The bed is comfortable and room is decent So 1 star for that.

Go to the front desk and ask if I could leave my room key for someone that will be coming later and they were not even pleasant.

Service is NEGATIVE STARS! Was there even SERVICE? Is this a SELF-SERVICE hotel?

People do not stay in a hotel to be granted HORRIBLE service.  I would NEVER stay here again.

END OF STORY.

this is my first trip to a Standard Hotel. I was here for a wedding and we had a room block here. I was excited to check out a cool hotel in Downtown LA.

The check in and the general room was good. There was an odd glass shower that allows you to see right into the shower and the entire bath, a little quirky.

Our trip turned into a nightmare when the roof top bar closed at 2 am. Our neighbors proceeded to party all night. We had to call security three times and by 4 am we had had it. We knocked on the door and got them to shut up. it was awful. the hords of people in the lobby to go to the roof top bar reminded me a concert line.

We got our room moved and upgraded by the front desk (thank you Christina). We LOVED the wow room and the huge tub. HOWEVER, we had another late night experience on this floor with some girls doing cartwheels and yelling.  We told them to be quiet and then we got security called on us... We had to call security again at 3 am to stop a party that was happening above us.

We love a party but when it's time to sleep, it's time to sleep.

The reviews on Yelp are right, this is a 1 star sleeping experience. It's too bad because the restaurant, the roof top and a lot of the staff seem very cool.

I would not stay here ever again and if you are a busy professional type that likes to go to sleep when the bar closes, this is NOT the place for you. I will continue to stick to the W Hotel chain. More professional.

Dissapointed.....
I came here for a friend's birthday awhile back. And though the location is nice, and the hotel itself is beautiful, service sucks, at best.
The shindig was held on the rooftop patio. Service was slow, at best. The patio was great. Lots of areas to lounge n relax.
The thing that really sucked was the ONE elevator!!! It took forever to leave. I was pissed. What really set me off was they wouldn't let us use the stairs. The overzealous security thought it would disturb those staying there. A bunch of crap.

LOVE The Standard downtown location, my boyfriend  and I got a room just so we could get to the rooftop and ended up in a cool room with the sexiest glass shower I have ever seen.
The staff is nice and the lobby lounge + rooftop pool + yellow dining hall make for a great time.
I spent new year (2009) in the purple lounge at the Sunset location and stayed the night and hands down the downtown location has better rooms a much better pool with the view and cooler peeps since the Sunset location seems to draw a lot of the Sunset Blvd riff raff.

The true sign of a hotel is not how they handle everyday transactions, but how they handle the not so usual circumstances--and whether or not they do the right thing, especially if it is solely their fault for the wrong doing.

We went to pick up some friends that were staying at The Standard Hotel.  We parked our car on the side of the parking lot to let in our friends.  As we were letting them enter the car, a valet driver of The Standard hit my car while it was parked.

Accidents happen, and that I am ok with.  What I'm not ok with is how the matter was handled during and after the incident.

Here are the big mistakes made by the hotel (so far):
1.)  The valet driver drove off without reporting the incident.
2.)  The valet didn't inform the other guest that their car was involved in an accident.  The other guests would have left not knowing that their car was damaged.
3.)  When I finally got them to take a report, I wasn't allowed a copy of it.
4.)  They didn't ask for my statement of what even occurred---odd.
5.)  When asking to speak with a manager ( Scott Rahbeck )---he nor did anyone "exist".  What type of hotel doesn't have managerial staff on duty at all reasonable times?  Oh, the incident happened at 1:30 PM on a Sunday.
6.)  I contacted senior management a day later, and even they don't follow through with things they promised--in fact, they don't even call you back when they say they would.

Overall, this hotel is totally unprofessional.  I guess this hotel is great if you like tacky design, poor hospitality, poor customer service, and no way of escalating problems.

May the recession help give this hotel what it deserves---Chapter 13.

Things I like:
1) The Standard's beautiful rooftop bar and pool.
2) Itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka-dot bikinis.  As long as they flatter my body.
3) The LA weather
4) Attractive waitstaff

Things I just can't get behind:
1) Fifteen dollar drinks
2) 6-foot-tall, 95-pound women wearing itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka-dot bikinis and stilettos.
3) The LA scene
4) Spazzy waitstaff

We wanted a girls night and to do a little cocktail hopping between some places in downtown LA.  The Standard restaurant fit the bill since DineLA was going as well.

Restaurant itself was smaller than I had anticipated, but everything we had was pretty good.  The pear martini was a great way to start off the meal.  Yum!   All the dishes arrived hot and everything tasted freshly prepared.  Its all the classics, but they are all done right.  I want to check out the rooftop in the summer now.

One of my buds was having his BDay bash here on a Sunday. With all the hype I heard about this place, I was excited to be pool side and partying. When I first got there and saw the building, I said out loud, "This is a only like 13 floors." Went up to my buddy's room and was not impressed at all. It looked too tacky with white plasticy furniture.

After a couple of shots with the BDay boy, we went up to the pool. The view was alright if you like looking at other tall buildings surrounding the hotel. Pool was nothing special. DJ spinning trendy tunes was so so. Prices for drinks were overpriced. Regardless of all of this, we still had a good time as it was a BDay celebration.

If you want to save some bucks while drinking here, get a bottle of Sparkling wine. It was 40 bucks and by far the best deal at this hotel. We all took turns buying bottles that day as cocktails were costing us 10-15 a glass.

The only thing I can review about this place is the rooftop pool bar and I love it.  It screams LA, but is far from Beverly Hills and Hollywood, as is the scene.  Downtown LA has its gems among forgotten buildings and places as everyone moved west and this is definitely one of them.  It's swanky and cool with its couches and lights and large enough so you don't feel cramped.  There's nothing like being among LA's giant buildings, twinkling around you as you sip on an old fashioned gimlet.  My friends and I always made Thursday nights our night downtown and this spot always was the place we ended our evening.  I love it.

My boyfriend and I love this hotel as it has been our go-to-hotel for any last minute special occasions. The rooftop bar is a great time with views of all of downtown and there is no cover as long as you are staying at the hotel... and why wouldn't you want to??

With amazing mod decor throughout, creatively stocked mini bar complete with condoms, ipod docks in each room, tilted trash cans intended for post-late night partying, and exhibitionist see thru showers.

It's a party nympho's playground ;)

The last time we stayed there they happened to even upgrade us for free because of overbooking to a room with a bathtub fit for 2.

All of these unique details makes the Standard one of my fav funky hotels.

My only real gripes include the valet cost, occasional slow service in the bar, and the grey scratchy blanket on the bed  (i usually throw it off immediately).

The Standard Hotel is Hollywood, downtown.  Unless I'm going to a work event or a friend has a room, I avoid this place.  I don't like the prices, attitude, or crowd.  If I wanted to hang out with Ed Hardy douche bags who get inspired watching Jon and Kate plus 8, I'd go to the Saddle Ranch.  Even with the cool view, I don't need this in my favorite neighborhood.

If I had a 3rd thumb, I'd give this place 3 thumbs down.

At first glance the room looks retro, modern, up-to-date and classy. After you get a closer look you realize that this room is akin to a really poorly made fake Louis Vuitton designer bag. The place just reeks of cheap. Where did they get the decor from? Target?! (No offense, I love Tar-jhay too but not for a pricey hotel room!) Even the bathroom felt like I was in a woman's locker room at the community center pool. Careful when you turn the hot water handle (you can't miss it, it is identified with a red circle on the handle) because the water comes out scorching hot!

The bed was comfie but the gray blankie gots to go - did they these from the san quentin penitentiary? ewwww...

I'd have to say the nicest thing was the TV - flat screen with swivel base - but even the TV was mediocre.

The place is NOISY. Not only are there party people screaming in the middle of the night, slamming doors, but you also hear the downtown traffic. Not a good thing when you are curled up in a fetal position with the prison break blanket keeping you warm.

SERVICE - what service? We requested house cleaning three times over a course of a weekend and they never came. Sorry, but isn't that just "standard" for a hotel to supply maid service daily? When confronted, all we got was a measly apology that was far from authentic.

Restaurant - its o-k. I've had better. The menu is limited and never changes. But the 24 hour service is one tiny star (more like a plane flying by at night with blinking lights disguised as a star).

Rooftop Bar - it was nice to get complimentary wristbands but I would think that's a given for any hotel guest to have access to the entire hotel.

Parking - There's no garage, its constant valet service. Which I suppose is nice until you are waiting at night to get your car in the midst of all of the bar guests or you are in a hurry.

Conclusion: Just pay $50 more and stay at the London in WeHo. Way nicer, fabulous service, fabulous food and decor, 4stars all the way.

I'm basing the stars purely on the hotel, excluding the rooftop bar (which is amazing). I stayed here about a year ago on a business trip. I can't believe we were able to get approval for this one, but it made it all the more convenient to be able to have a room at the hotel after spending the night on the rooftop.

I did not bring a vehicle to the hotel so I can't comment on the valet service. The front desk folks were average, nothing special. There are a lot of 'pretty people' working here but I have no problems with that since it fits their theme. The service at The Standard Hotel does not compare to the Bonaventure, but the two places are completely different.

I stayed in the 'Medium' room for three days / two nights. It looks really modern and chic to go along with the whole theme. There's even a little alarm clock speaker dock for your iPod. I thought that was a nice touch. They have a lot of stuff already stocked in the room should you need it, but they do charge for them.

Now on to some of the bad. The bed is low to the ground, which in of itself is not a problem, but it seems like there is no box frame. That, in conjunction with the firmness of the mattress didn't make for the most pleasant sleeping experience, but it wasn't the worst I've experienced. Also, there is no actual wall between the bathroom and the room itself. Instead, there a floor to ceiling glass pane that separates the bathroom and the room. This could be awkward depending upon who you are staying with, if anyone. You can block off the toilet and sink with the shower curtain, but the shower is still exposed (+1 for the shower being huge and being able to watch tv while showering). The walls seem to be quite thin. One night as I was trying to get to sleep, but I heard the couple next to me having um ... fun! Maybe she was just loud?

For the price of a room here, you're probably better off getting a room at the Bonaventure. Service is great and I love their beds. However, you sure can't beat the convenience of having a room at The Standard if you are going to party on the rooftop. Never had a bad time up there.

The hotel needs to improve in customer service. It is a high priced Ikea and a bit over priced. Definitely needs some operational improvemement. The hype for the rooftop is good though and quite enjoyable. Thursdays are fun. The pool sucks in my opinion.  The pool chairs aren't comfortable at all and its not the greatest. so I would give it a...."I guess its A-ok"
