I feel weird giving a sports bar sort of place a 5 star review ... but my visit to Stalking Horse was unexpectedly wonderful.
The walls are lined with TVs and there's a giant horse statue in the front room. We weren't expecting much - we were served drinks in plastic cups and it looked like the bartender wrote our order on a paper towel or something.
I was actually amazed with the food here and it's SO much better than standard bar fare. The quesadillas are fabulous (the veggie one and buffalo chicken one are both amazing), the pizza is wonderful, the sandwiches are great and my twice baked potato (with spinach, feta and roasted garlic) was very nearly divine. It was the sort of place where everyone passes their food around the table because it's all so good.
I've walked by Stalking Horse during typical bar hours and the place is packed so I've no idea how the food is when it's busy. That being said I will be sneaking in during slow hours as much as possible.

The Federal Hill neighborhood of Baltimore just got its coolest addition -- a bar with a music video jukebox! I know I'm not alone when I say I miss when MTV actually played music videos, and this place more than gives me my fix. Our table ruled the video jukebox, carefully plotting song choices and judging other groups at the bar by the videos they played (Men Without Hats -- nice! Rod Stewart -- are you kidding??)
The best thing about the jukebox is that it seems to have every video I've ever seen, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers/Beavis and Butthead cartoon video of "Roller Coaster of Love," along with videos for songs I didn't even know had videos like Radiohead's "Paranoid Android."
Inside, the decor is minimal, the walls are lined with flat screen TVs (most play the music videos, a few have sports, and one in the back was showing the Daily Show), and there is a giant 8-foot horse in the back room, hence the "Stalking Horse," I suppose.
Stalking Horse also serves food -- most tables around ours were sharing appetizers, although one table looked to be on a date with separate courses of food and glasses of wine.
Frozen drinks including "pink lemonade" with vodka, rum and lemonade mix, icy hurricanes, and their own version of a slushy red bull vodka are daily specials for $4, along with draft beers.
The only downside about Stalking Horse is that I've never felt so compelled to stare at a TV before -- there were times that I struggled to pull my eyes from the screen and started doing the "uh huh, yeah" filler during conversations.
Definitely a chill spot, and looking forward to coming back!
**UPDATE 10/07**
The friend of mine who took us here has just told me a basement fire in this track of business resulted in severe damage to the Stalking Horse -- apparently the basement was gutted and the horse statue retained so much of the smoke smell that they have had to get rid of it. Alas, Stalking Horse is closed until it can be renovated.
