What can I say? This is my favorite local park! Toddler area, big-kid area, fountain-water-play-area, Wednesday evening free concerts in the summertime, and you can reserve picnic areas for birthday parties and BBQs. If you're in the area with kids, you have to check it out. What other reviewers have said about "not enough shade in the play areas" is right on, so plan ahead for that. Otherwise, enjoy!

Wow... Just moved to the neigborhood and quickly found out that EVERY Weds, during the summer, they have a live concert here. Really enjoyed tonight's. It is every Wednesday from 6-8PM, just bring a lawn chair, a blanket (it gets cool at night), and something to snack on / drink (FYI, no booze in the park). Lots of people dancing like no one is watching, and kids busting out some new dance moves in front of the stage with their Ma. Great family event, or by yourself (good people watching). Up coming schedule posted below:
July 20 * Blues
BlueState
Bluestate is definitely a band on the way up in the highly talented Northern California Blues scene gathering recognition and a loyal following throughout the region. They are known for their "make no apologies", non-traditional approach to the blues. It blends elements of jazz, funk and soul into an eclectic contemporary gumbo that stills pays homage to their blues roots.
July 27 * Zydeco
Zydeco Flames
The Zydeco Flames have gained a reputation as the West Coast's premiere Zydeco band. The Flames consistently pack the house in venues ranging from contemporary clubs to major festivals and traditional dancehalls. Their sizzling roots rhythms are timeless and the execution of them relentless, with a stunningly powerful groove. The Flames' sixth CD release "Fire It Up", featuring Andre Thierry and Billy Wilson on accordion, provides fans with hot Zydeco in the tradition of masters like Clifton Chenier, Buckwheat Zydeco and Queen Ida.
August 3 * Polka/Oompah
The Internationals
The Internationals play a variety of music genres and styles. They play all the European dance favorites -- polkas, waltzes, schottiches, etc. -- and also mix in traditional favorites from a variety of European countries. In addition, they play a smattering of American classics from a wide variety of genres. It isn't uncommon to hear a polka followed by a country western classic!
August 10 * 70s/Pop
Groove Doctors
The GROOVE Doctors will fill your perscription for a fun, memorable and enjoyable time. Their diverse song list and high-energy presentation gets people of all ages and musical tastes up off their seats and onto the dance floor - or grass in our case! They have fun when they play, and it shows! With the GROOVE Doctors you'll hear Hit Songs covering the last 50 years of music. -

Pros
-gated area for toddlers
-water play feature for toddlers
-huge big structure for older kids
-big water geysers for the big kids
-bathrooms, fairly clean for a public park
-big lawn with lots of shade around the edges
Cons
-not nearly enough shade in the playground area. The slides are burning hot in both playgrounds. The toddler area has a few areas of shade...but they really need to install a few more shades over the play structures. My little 19month old was screaming several times because the slides or other climbing areas were too hot. Same thing in the big playground. I had jeans on and when I went down the slide, my butt was scorching hot.
Overall, I really like this park...but I prefer going on a cloudy or partly-cloudy day when the playground isn't going to be so hot. -

Stafford Park is by far our favorite park in Redwood City, though not the closest. It has a nice, multilevel climbing structure for kids, a swingset, and a mixed-use open field area for kicking (or throwing) around a ball (or just running!). The park is not very large, but is beautiful, featuring three enormous valley oak trees, two at the very center of the park. Also, it is ringed on the south and western sides by mature Redwoods (including sequoias). As mentioned in other reviews, the park also has a water feature, which is basically a set of water spouts that shoot about 25 feet in the air. In the summer this area is usually filled with screaming, running kids from ages 1-15.
Unfortunately in the last several years the park has become a little too crowded and popular on summer weekends. Consequently, the bathroom area can get pretty nasty, and by August the grass can get torn up and trampled. As for picnicking, it got so bad that people actually used to camp out or come at 6:00 am to grab a picnic spot, but the city finally incorporated a reservation system a few years ago. On Wednesday evenings in the summer the park hosts outdoor concerts from local bands, covering a large range of styles. Though this event can get absolutely packed, we are still regulars.
Another nice feature of Stafford is its fenced-off area for toddlers. It includes sand pits, a smaller play structure, toddler swings, teeter-totter, mini play houses, and some smaller water features, including a stream that toddlers can turn on with a big button. The sand is very coarse, which means it doesn't get EVERYWHERE like beach sand does, making clean up easy (but it makes terrible sand castles). I lost count of how many weekend afternoons my kids spent here as toddlers, making a mess, getting soaked, and having a great time. -

Great park year round for toddlers to older kids: they have something for everyone. Toddler has a nice gated area to hang out with mom, 3-1/2 year old has play structures to climb while I practiced soccer with my 7-1/2 year old on the grassy area. Nice water play area and concerts in the summer.
My biggest complaint is the rubbery sustance they put in toddler play areas these days. Everyone is always slipping on the corners around the sand pits. Gets 'm everytime. -

Stafford Park is an example of what a small neighborhood park should be. Conveniently located, well-equipped and maintained, and popular. If you want to have a family picnic, birthday party or barbecue you can reserve one of the picnic table/grill areas online for about $20 at:
http://www.ci.redwood-...
Or take your chances getting an unreserved area, first come/first served--but keep in mind that weekends get booked up months in advance.
In the summer afternoons and evenings you will see a park full of happy families and squealing happy kids enjoying a bit of the suburban American dream in peace and safety, on the green grass. An idyllic image all the more valuable in these increasingly troubled times. -

Finally took my 2-year old to Stafford Park after hearing about its water feature. It's on from 11-12 noon and, at 1 pm through 3 pm and again later in the afternoon. Very popular with the kids. I just wish the kids wouldn't sit on the fountains and block all the water fountains, but what can you do? They're kids. Some parents do try and tell their kids to not do it.
I like this park. It's got great play structures, big grassy areas, and an enclosed play area for toddlers. I actually took my son to the smaller water feature area - which seemed to be better for toddlers and it's got a covered area.. It's got a little snail which gently spouts water. It also has a water fountain that comes on when you press on it. My son ended up spending most of his time there, without all the commotion of the bigger water feature. This area, though , it's not enclosed.
Also...I saw 5 ice cream trucks stop at this park in a matter of one hour. Wow, that seemed like a lot to me. -

WARNING: January 17, 2009
The Stafford Park playground has been closed due to E. coli findings in the sand. They are removing the sand and testing the ground. Its a nice park when its clean. Check with the city before going to this location.

Stafford Park gets 4 stars from me primarily for the Wednesday evening free music in the park summer series every summer put on by the City of Redwood City. Yeah, I know the cool folks who put the series on, and work for the city, and they make fun of the name the City of Redwood City too.
The free music is every Wednesday evening from 6-8 and is super family friendly. Bring food, drink, blankets, kids and all is right in the world. Take advantage of that Climate Best by Government Best, people. You know what I'm talking about!

This is a great park (fenced in area good for toddlers with cushy ground, sand area, play structure that is designed for younger kids). They have water fountains that kids can run in on hot days.
It can be annoying when people leave the gates open (there are signs requesting that people keep the gates closed), but it seems about as safe and nice as a park can get.
There are 4 baby swings and they don't squeak. Sweet!Listed in: Park Rundown - Where to take…

Water Play and Picnic Fun in a Neighborhood Park
Reserve a picnic spot ahead of time (we had spot #3) and create a wonderful children's birthday party. Play areas and water jets were perfect for the kids, and a convenient restroom was a welcome amenity for the parents. The water feature runs May-Oct between 11am-7pm but shuts off from Noon-1pm and 3-4pm. Some large trees provide nice shade and a well kept lawn made a super frisbee or water balloon zone. Plenty of parking around the perimeter of the block.
Dog Friendly - Four paws for dog's welcome on leash in the open lawn areas and for having plenty of shady trees.Listed in: Dog Paw Ratings

We have spent many fun-filled days at Stafford Park.
I love that you can reserve picnic tables! We had my daughter's first and third birthdays there, which is great because there are activities for kids of all ages.
In the summer months there are water spouts that shoot 20 feet into the air, which is a lot of fun for the kids and keeps them cool.
One thing, though, parents of older kids, please tell your kids to stop sticking their butts on top of the spouts so that the other kids can't enjoy the water while your kid gets a fun-filled enema. Thanks!
The restrooms can get funky on a summer weekend day, but they're usually nice and clean.
There's a good play structure, a nice, enclosed area for smaller kids and swings for the older kids.
There is a nice sized lawn and in the summers, the music in the park is a really nice community event.
I've met some great people at the park and have actually made some nice friendships with a couple of the moms. My daughter has made some good friends, too!
We probably go here about 5-10 times a month in the winter and about 20 times a month in the summer.
Be sure to bring a few bucks for the ice cream man, who comes by every 30 minutes in the summer and bring a change of clothes because of the water activities. -

I like this place a lot, I always like playgrounds that have a fenced in toddler area and of course, the water feature is very cool. I've never seen anything like that before. I will say that there isn't really any place to sit if you do have a young child and that's sort of frustrating and there's also not a lot of shade in the toddler area. I prefer the park on Middle Road in Menlo Park, I can sit and read and my daughter can play for hours.
Its accessible by bus which is great, makes it a real adventure! -

Hands down my favorite park in Redwood City. Great playground with lots of activities for kids. The toddler area is newly revamped and secured. There are grills (though I've never used them) and ample green area to run around, throw a frisbee, or enjoy the outdoor music in the summer. I love the quite neighborhood it's in and the quite streets surrounding it.

Great park for kids all year round. located in great area. perfect for small parties. small enough to find "wondering kids" . only thing to look out for is the brewster street cars might drive a little fast. during summer make sure you take a extra set of clothes for the water area.

Review from Geoff D.
This well-groomed and central park in Redwood City has excellent climbing structures, swings and a popular water feature. It also has numerous picnic tables and is a good standby option for an outing with kids. Stafford's only real downside is that it neighbors a relatively busy road (Hopkins) and has no perimeter fence... so those of us with younger children will feel that extra bit of anxiety that more protected parks prevent.

What a great little park! Too bad I don't live in the area. Great place for the kiddies (and "adults" like me!) to play. Clean-ish bathrooms. Yay!

There is plenty of play equipment to satisfy a wide range of ages and the water feature is a big hit in the warmer months. My only complaints are that it gets very crowded on the weekends and there isn't any shade when the weather is warm.

Why aren't all parks this nice? It's a 15-20 min drive from our house in Redwood Shores, but it's worth it. Water park, check. Enclosed safe toddler area, check. Lots of shade, check. Love it.

Staffard Park has everything that you could went in a park: lush, spacious lawns, picnic tables, barbecues, and of course, large playgrounds with multiple structures for the kids. This park is always well maintained and frequented by a lot of nice people. When I was there eight years ago, it was with a group of kids when I volunteered as a teacher's aid. Everyone had a blast. Keep up the good work city of Redwood City.
