i just got my first pet a month ago, so i brought him here upon a friend's recommendation, despite the mixed yelp reviews.

needless to say, as a first time pet-owner, i was very stressed about finding the right vet who could answer all my questions...I'm sorry to report that my first vet, Dr. Lugones, was not very good at all. she barely looked at me as we "spoke" and rushed through everything! Considering the cost of my visit, i was NOT impressed. my kitten had a URI within a week of the visit (i had noticed that his eyes were gooky and asked her about it during the appt, but she rushed out of the office and didn't answer my questions...i ended up having to bring him in only a week later to get him meds!! UGH, horrible vet).

Our second experience was much better, our vet-tech, Michelle was very nice! my kitten really liked her and she also taught me how to trim his nails. This time i decided to try out Dr. Luk, who was a big improvement, despite the long wait...she was much more informative and patient.

Despite the high cost ($85 just for the appt), I am going to give the owner, Dr. Haddock a shot this weekend and see how it goes.

need to do more research to find a better, more affordable vet. any recommendations would be great, thanks!

If you love your pet and care about your wallet go elsewhere!

My experiences are similar to many other reviewers; The service was not compassionate, in fact it was a bit abrasive. The prices were exorbitant. And the up-sell of tests, services, medicines was unreal.

I went there because it was convenient. Thankfully I've learned better before a mis diagnosis or unnecessary test or drug hurt my pet. Its NY, there are lots of good vets, there's no need to settle.

This has not been a good year for my cat Booboo; first a cast, then stitches. The staff members at St. Marks were kind, professional, and understanding (plus they remembered my cat; I'm sure she was flattered). All procedures and charges were explained before they were performed, and all my questions were answered immediately.

Like any hospital, I am sure the vets differ in their demeanor and experience. So far I've seen Dr. Luk and Dr. Mones, both of whom I can't recommend enough. Also, keep in mind that there is a walk in/emergency services charge; make sure you call ahead to schedule your appointment or be prepared to shell out some extra dough.

- I'd like to start by saying that vets for exotics are hard to come by
- brought my hamster in, was seen immediately, was told all of the charges before any procedure started, they had a cancellation so I wasn't charged for being a walk in, paid at the end of the visit after a the vet gave me a breakdown of the bill and my treatment options
- highly recommend Dr. Daniel Mones (the only male vet at the practice), couldn't have been more pleased with his bedside manner and genuinely personable professionalism *side bar, he's married, boo
- very pleasant and cordial staff

I had a fantastic experience with St. Marks this past week.

My bunny had a sudden illness, and I brought him in to St. Marks Vet without any notice.  I had never been there before but within 30 seconds of walking in my bunny was being examined by a vet.

The staff was fantastic.  The receptionist was warm and welcoming, and Michelle, our Vet Tech was very kind, supportive, and knowledgeable.  Dr. Kurowski was excellent.  She REALLY knows her stuff but is also very friendly and down to earth.  She spent a long time answering my questions, and she really went out of her way to ensure that my pet got the best care.

Cost wise I thought that they were very reasonable.  They clearly recognize that vet bills are often an unexpected expense, and I felt like they really worked with me to keep everything as affordable as possible.

They also did a lot of little things to help like feeding my bunny treats and giving me a towel to line his carrier with.

Overall I would HIGHLY recommend St. Marks Vet Hospital, I will definitely be using them exclusively in the future.

I am in increasingly disappointed with St. Marks Vet.  My concerns are similar to many of those below.

I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that St. Mark's services are dramatically overpriced, and for those things that are not overpriced, they consistently attempt to pile on services that are not necessary.  Frequently the veterinarians I have seen have used guilt tactics to try to make me pay for an upgrade or an extra service, etc.  (Example: I have a hairless dog: (not prone to fleas--literally gets thrown in the shower every week). But the vets have pushed a combo heart-worm, flea-preventative medicine, telling me that it is necessary, and implying when I tell them there will be no flea problems that I don't know, or don't care about fully providing for my pet--many other examples abound, from unnecessary urine and fecal sampling, to unnecessary bloodwork., and I have multiple times left a routine office visit with a bill of 400 dollars or more)

They are also not very good with my dog, requiring a muzzle to perform any minor procedure (like temperature-taking, injections, etc.) instead of taking the time to make my dog feel comfortable.  He always comes away from the visit feeling very stressed.  Don't get me wrong--the vets are very kind--but I always come away with the feeling that the kindness is attached to one's ability to be non-argumentative and fully accepting of unnecessary procedures.

I was reluctant to change veterinarians, since this place has detailed records of my dog and knows his medical history, but I think it's time to move on.

If you don't mind paying a fortune for vet care (I would venture that I have paid more in the past 2 years for my pet's visits than my own--though I'm a pretty healthy person), then go to St. Marks.  I can no longer recommend them.

So over the years we have had a vet in every borough for the tiniest member of our family and although some have been obviously competent I never felt that we had found her vet...until now.
Knowing you have the right doctor is a lot like love, all gut, and when Dr. Modes started gently palping our shih tzu for any unwanted lumps and she stayed quiet and as calm as she was going to be at the vet,I knew.
He listened, asked questions, made suggestions, discussed the cost in case they were going to be prohibitive all the while petting doggy into a submissive, nay, happy sedate place.Talk about a bedside manner.I was almost kinda jealous. okay,I was a lil jealous.
He was uber busy and I never felt rushed.

The downside is that it is not cheap. But hopefully pet insurance will help ease that pain.

Next up, my feral cat.

I had to go here because we just moved to NYC, East Village, and needed a vet for my cat's monthly injections. They were convenient, clean, and served that purpose.

However I did NOT like that I had to pay for a full office exam before they would give him the injection. I had all my paperwork from the past vet, and we have been doing this for 6+ years. The vet, Sally Haddock, was nice but very very young and inexperienced. She had to look up what the medicine was that we gave (methylpred) and then insisted I give a different kind of shot (depomedrol) because it was less painful and just as effective. This, she learned from consulting her book. Hm. So $82 for the exam + $35 for the injection later, I slinked home.

My dog was immediately due for Rabies, and shortly within that time frame, all his others (DA2P-PV, Bordatella).  I took him in and again, they insisted on doing the full workup on him before giving him the shots. The city was wearing my fight down and I just agreed. Additionally, they insisted he go on a heartworm medication (I hear all NYC dogs are which is not the case in LA). But before you do that, you must be tested.

So, $487 later for the exam, heartworm snap test & pills, and all the shots, I slinked home. Only later (months later) I find out that I should have NEVER given all those vaccines together (Rabies must wait at least 2 weeks, preferably 6 months) from the others or it overwhelms the dog). And since then, lots and lots of folks have warned me against this place for the sheer ripped-off-ed-ness and inexperienced vets they provide.

I had a sick ferret, and was sent from one vet to another to this one, being that this one sees ferrets. I rushed over and had to fill out paperwork while they took my sick little ferret to the back. They charged an exorbitant  amount of money because I was a walk in and didn't have an appointment. It didn't take them long to tell me what was wrong with my ferret. Once they found out how old she was, they broke the news to me in an exam room. Which wasn't good to begin with, and then was told that the best course of action would be to put her to sleep. And they expected an answer right then and there. sorry i had to pull myself together being that i've had this ferret for 7 years, and i couldn't just put her down just like that.
The cost for putting her down was a bit pricy. That and the fact that I didn't want the body, they charged me more for removal of the body. On top of that they charged me cause it was an emergency! sorry it was an emergency! Needless to say, it took forever to find the vet to tell her what I had decided. She was a nice vet, though she seemed very busy, and she asked if i wanted to be there when it happened, to which i declined and left.
Thoughtfully enough though they did send me a sympathy card a few weeks later. It was very pricy there to say the least. the staff is nice, but i'm sure there are other places you could go.

I have to say the staff couldn't be nicer but on every occasion that I had to bring my dogs there the bill was in the high $100's-$1000's. I am an animal lover and would go to any expense to have my dogs treated. However, after the exorbitant amount of money I have spent there I have yet to get a solid diagnosis for even one of their ailments. The clueless shoulder-shrugs and references to different animal hospitals have left me in a panic on more than one occasion. After deciding to start seeing a different vet today I realized they never checked for any dates of immunizations (which have expired). I realize that it's ultimately my responsibility to have them vaccinated but it's disheartening that at the top of a $1500 invoice all the spaces for the vaccine expiration dates are blank it makes me wonder about their business. Is that not one of the most basic things a vet takes care of?
I gave them 2 stars purely because they're nice but I have to say they have not given adequate care to my animals and -that- in my opinion is what is priceless.

My dog has been cared for by St. Mark's Vet ever since she was 8 weeks old.  I live nowhere near them and it's worth the drive, despite having at least 20 vets that are closer to my apartment.

Dr. Sara Neuman is our dog's vet, and she has done everything from her spaying, teeth cleaning, removing a tick, and even calling us on the weekend and giving us her HOME number when we had a degenerative disc scare (dog was just reacting to a tick bite!).  They are known for being a little more expensive than other vets, but do you pick a doctor based on price or service?  We care for our pets like people and I picked St. Mark's for stellar service.  Dr. Neuman is not an alarmist and has a genuine bond with our dog (any other place we bring our dog she shakes but she LOVES going to the vet).   The facility is always clean, the front desk staff is really friendly, and when other doctors had to see our dog they were always kind, professional, and had read her record so they knew a little bit about her!

The staff here is young and enthusiastic and seem to like animals.  My fiance has taken several cats here over the years, and when we got a dog, after the initial 6 months, where I used my family vet in NJ since I knew them and all, when I needed to make the switch, I went here.  Other than a kind of dismal waiting room, and a checkwriting policy that was archaic in the 1990's, I don't have anything negative to say.  I'd definitely make them our Frenchie's primary vet.  I didn't think the prices were out of line with the NJ suburbs, either.  With a dog, who even counts pennies?  I don't want a cut-rate vet.

UPDATE:  Josie is in there right now (7-14-07) for a partial obstruction of her stomach.  She ate a table the other day when my mother was dogsitting, and it could be that or the grass I let her eat.  Either way, I trust them enough to do surgery on her.  They let me come for a visit this morning just because I missed her.  Nice team of young vets, very compassionate, very sympathetic.  I especially love Dr. Luk.  She seems to genuinely adore Josie!  I'll keep you posted on Josie!

I always used to go to Cobble Hill Animal Clinic in Brooklyn, but the trek out there from the city was getting to be inconvenient so went to St. Marks based on the reviews here.
A little hidden, it's on the ground floor of a building, but appearances aside, all the staff were extremely friendly and caring.  I saw Dr. Luk and she was very attentive and helpful with my dog's exam.
Seems like a good clinic.  The only downside is that it's a bit pricey compared to my former vet.  Office visit is about $86, but other services seem to be priced more or less in line.  Would definitely recommend if you live in the area.

My dog Bella, a beautiful maltese, was extremely ill and her symptoms of lethargy and poor appetite had been growing steadily worse over a three day period. On Sunday I noticed that she was having difficulty standing and immediately called St. Marks Veterinary Hospital (Dr. Luk) due to their being one of the only offices that had hours on a Sunday. The receptionist, after being told the severity of Bella's symtoms, told me that she would have someone call me back. No one called back. I decided to call them again and insisted on speaking to one of the vets.  Unfortunately, Dr  Charisse Luk was the vet that I spoke to and she was HORRIBLE.  She could not have cared less about my Dog or her symptoms!! She actually stated, "I really don't have time to speak on the phone....Do you think that I want to be here on a Sunday!?". i tried to explain to her that I was just concerned about how I would pay for the treatment if it was going to be too expensive at which point Dr. Luk became extremely agitated and said," That's too bad. Look, are you bringing your dog here or not? If not, I don't have time to answer all of these questions.".
This is the worst experience I have ever had with a Doctor of any kind.
DO NOT GO TO THIS OFFICE IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR PET!!  They don't care if your pet lives or dies.  They only care about money in their pocket!

I can't say nicer things than anyone has said about this awesome vet.
Amy Kurowski has looked after our Havanese pup since he was small enough to fit in the palm of our hand.
If you have pet insurance, then it doesn't really work out too expensive.

In need of an expert, trustworthy vet to care for your cat, dog or ant farm?  Look no further than St. Mark's Vet.  Founded back in the 1980's by the appropriately named vet and author Dr. Sally Haddock, St. Mark's now boasts five talented women veterinarians.  My cats have been patients of St. Mark's from the beginning, and I've always been impressed by the interest, dedication and professionalism of each of the St. Mark's vets who's seen them.  These doctors know what they're doing, and they bring a soothing "bedside manner" to their practice that helps Mr. & Ms. Kitty get over their instinctive feline hatred of a visit to the doctor's.  The staff is also well trained and will entertain you with stories about appropriate footwear for seeing eye ponies and why monkeys make bad pets.

this vet is great! my boyfriend and i just got a puppy recently and we brought him there a few weeks ago. our vet (Dr. Luk) was super nice and really explained everything to us. about a week later when we needed to get meds for our dog. my boyfriend went there to pick up the medicine...but she wasnt working. the receptionist said she'll call as back ASAP...and by the time he got home she had called us back to answer all of our questions.
supposedly they are a little more costly than some other vets in the area...but they are very caring, clean, and explain things clearly.

I've taking my dog here despite all the horror stories I had heard from at least six different people, who had very legitimate complaints.  I thought I was lucky, or maybe they were unlucky, but this changed a couple of weeks ago.  PLEASE READ FURTHER.  YOU WILL NEVER WANT TO BRING YOUR PETS HERE AGAIN.  The only reason I went here was because it was close by.  They are one of the most expensive vets around, and I had always noticed how they recommend buying a lot of extras that other vets don't push, as well as advocating for unnecessary services.  Certainly, their exorbitant prices has nothing to do with the quality of care!  My dog went in for a routine cleaning.  First off, they wanted me to pay in full before the treatment and I went to grab my credit card, which I forgot.  When I came back, they told me the price was almost fifty dollars more because the quote was from the wrong year.  No  apologies from them at all.  Just very matter-of-fact.  So, a basic cleaning was now going to cost me around five hundred dollars.  In any event, I agreed because my dog's health is very important to me.  I left him there and got a call later in the afternoon.  Dr. de Meola said, very casually, that my dog needed to have some teeth extracted.  This came as a shock to me as my dog is young and very healthy.  He has some tarter build-up, but I've never noticed any sort of gum disease.  I am a human dental professional, by the way.  She then proceeded to list about ten different teeth that "needed to come out right away."  The only way I was able to stop her from talking was by telling her that I didn't have the money.  This seemed to stop her "concern" for my dog right away.  I was shocked.  Ten teeth!  Pulling teeth is incredibly traumatic to humans and all other animals.  People do not realize that teeth are living tissue, essentially bones on the outside.  Any one who's had a wisdom tooth taken out knows how painful it is; you can't solid foods for a week.  As a dental professional, I can say that what many people don't know is that removing teeth actually changes the formation of the skull; the boney tissue around where the root was becomes re-absorbed, resulting in a sunken appearance, an inability to eat solid foods, sometimes, even PERMANENT NERVE DAMAGE and SINUS CONDITIONS.  Yet, the doctor was so casual about it, not even taking the time to tell me the possible side effects.  TO ME, THIS IS JUST ONE EXAMPLE of how St. Mark's Vets AREN'T TO BE TRUSTED.  THEY DON'T ACT LIKE HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS, more like mortgage brokers or investment bankers.  They care about money in their pockets, not your pets.  Really.  It hurts me to write this, as I think about what my dog could have gone through, if I didn't know any better and refused the extractions.  WHAT REALLY GETS ME IS THIS:  When my dog came home, the tech, who did his cleaning, not the vet!, said on his discharge papers that he was a good patient and that HIS TEETH LOOKED TO BE IN GREAT CONDITION.  This, after what Dr. de Meola claimed, that he needed to have ten teeth extracted.  These people can't even get their story straight.  I am sickened by what happened.  PLEASE THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU TAKE YOUR PETS HERE.

The office was clean, the exam rooms up to date and Dr. Luk was great!  I love that they have office hours on the weekends, and she said Nacho's labs should be back tomorrow (Sunday).  Dr. Luk was sweet, caring, funny, and very much down to earth.  She didn't make me feel bad that Nacho had some dental issues and when I told her I'd rather hold off on a vaccine she acted totally fine with it.   The reason I went to this vet in the first place is because I needed a travel certificate and they were the only one's that did charge $80-$100 for an exam PLUS another $75 for a travel certificate.  When I called them, they said it would only be $82 for the exam and that the certificate was free of charge.  However, when I got there, they said Nacho had to have a stool test and blood work before they would give her the travel cert.  All that equaled $212.  I guess that's about the amount I would've paid anywhere else, except I wish they would've told me on the phone that it was $82 plus mandatory blood work.  Other than that, I love the place and will continue to take Nacho there.

I have been bringing my cats to St Marks for around 9yrs. I have been there for everything from life-or-death emergencies, routine visits, vaccines, and sadly, most recently cancer. I trust this place  - especially Dr. Luk. She's brilliant, very kind, cool, and thorough. You will not leave that office until you understand everything about your cat's health and what your options are. And she is very good about telephone communication. She will call you when she says she will. That's a big plus. You're never left feeling in the dark about anything.

We had been taking our dog to St Marks since he was a puppy. We loved the vet that was there previously and then one day about a year ago I had to take the dog there for an emergency. When we got there his vet was no longer there and we were assigned to a new doctor. I won't go into the long of it, but suffice it to say they had us pay for multiples of the same test. I was treated very rudely by the young reception guy who refused to let me take my dog if I did not pay up. I left my wallet in my car, and he simply refused to let me out. We had been going there for 8 years! So we switched to a different vet. And just last week we had a new emergency. I went back with St Marks thinking perhaps the last time was a fluke. I was left in a waiting room for almost an HOUR. WITH My infant baby. WHen I asked the receptionist about it she shot me a look and said in her most sarcastic voice - "your appointment was at 7:30!" It was 8:25. She then told me that there was an emergency and that was why I was stuck waiting. Well, I saw the old doctor that we had the last time just standing there when she said that. So finally my baby starts wailing - and the doctor came running and treated my dog. On my way out the receptionist gave me a sarcastic smile and said in her sweetest oversweet voice that my bill wasn't ready. I will never, ever set foot in that place ever again. I would highly, highly recommend you find a different vet.
