Come here for the sandwiches - fresh, delicious, great value! I've only had the veggie sandwich so I can't speak for the other items, but really--I don't know how they do it but it's like the best veggie sandwich EVER.
I also sometimes pick up grocery items here, and they're about on par with Whole Foods prices, but without the lines. Produce is pretty fresh too.
I go through phases where laziness wins over cheapness and I go here instead of Key Foods/bodega one block off of my walk home.
I often get sushi from here - great selection, usually a good portion for $4-5, AND it has a thin wall of sushi rice. I hate it when places have a thick layer of rice (unfortunately lunch favorite Cafe Zaiya is guilty of this).
Amy's frozen Cheddar Bowl is awesome. Sometimes they sell out... So is Haagen Daaz' Five line of ice cream, especially the Ginger flavor. I also love Manner wafer blocks. I'm still miffed that they are cheaper here than they were in Austria...
You'll never go hungry here.

I pass this market 1-2x a day on the way to the subway. Their prices aren't cheap but aren't… Read more »
Clean and efficient and has just about everything you could want within reason. I'm a fan!
I've found that I can pretty much get everything I need to make a homemade meal from this clean little market; and the prices aren't too bad either!
Cute little market in quite a popular spot. I find myself in St. Mark's quite often. Even though I have been in the area for the past years the first time I visited this market was only a few weeks ago. They have a vast array of produce both common and some uncommon. Catering the the asian population of the area and various other foods to spark the senses. If I recall correctly this market is open 24 hours so one can visit here early morning to middle of the night, whom for people like me is a great need in the city.
If you want a $12 turkey basil pesto aioli sandwich with sliced hearts of palm, kalamata olives, and topped with melted gruyere cheese on warm focaccia then this is not the place for you. (I hear Wichcraft is good for that)
BUT, if you're looking for a no frills sandwich done right with quality ingredients (boars head meats & cheeses, fresh veggeis) all for under $7, you can't go wrong with St Marks Deli. BTW, it's in small, clean grocery store so you've got many other options for add on snacks and drinks.
My goto lunch spot.
Popped in here for a few flowers once, the staff was all there at the front, waiting on customers (must've been a slow Saturday night). Their assortment varies depending on the week, but found a very nice set of melon-hued roses there. Fresh, too.
Foodstuffs and other small supplies in the back for the local residents. Definitely clean and polished, despite being under multiple restaurants above. No access down the steps for those with disabilities, though.
good *clean* 24 hour grocery store. While it can be a bit pricey, this grocery offers a variety of different types of food and lots of interesting brands of more traditional foods. So in all its kind of pricey but they often have items that other more traditional groceries lack.

I only work in this area so I've never shopped here for groceries but the deli counter here is a step above the area gourmet delis / deliterias (see All About Food, Bully's Deli, Modern Gourmet) and a step down from some of the stellar sandwich/soup/salad spots in the area like Bite, Paradis-to-Go, and Grey Dog Coffee.
I've enjoyed both the Proscuitto and the Fresh Mozzarella sandwich. While they have artisinal bread here for various local bakeries, I've got to say that the rolls for the sandwiches are just okay. More soft than crusty.
Big selection of chips and chocolate near the counter.
This is the place to go to if you just want a basic sandwich done right and/or you are really particular with your sandwich (as the top places mentioned above aren't as mix-and-match as your average deli). Consider it 3.5 stars rounded up...
Discovered the sandwiches here with a co-worker. I soon discovered that this place could serve as an official deli for my office b/c so many people head over for lunch.
The sandwiches are huge, the ingredients are fresh and they have at least 4 different types of turkey to choose from! (My deli meat of choice). I usually go with the Maple Honey turkey. The also have sea salted rice chips, which I LOVE.
The total for the sandwich is usually ~$6 and I often can't eat it all and save one half for tomorrow's lunch. So the prices are quite a steal.
Thank goodness for little markets selling fancy lime water with electrolytes! Cuz in this humidity, yuck.
Anyhoo, I was rollin around the St. Mark's area yesterday and found myself rather parched and thanks to this store, all was right in the world again. I took the quickie tour of the place and it looked like they carry a variety of fun and tasty stuff and they had a deli counter. Other than that, I can't really say the people working here were personality plus, but then again, it was pretty gnarly weather and I wasn't feeling very chipper charlie either.
This is a great place to get a sandwich. Nothing fancy, but the sandwich they made me was very good. The bread was fresh and soft. They put a good amount of deli meat in the sandwich and the veggies were fresh and tasty as well. All of this was only $5.50 so it was quite a steal! The grocery store part was clean and it looked like they had a nice selection of items as well.
I'm here all the time... good selection of your basic stuff. fruit is always fresh.... (great blueberries and rasberries for the cereal and the big grapefruits are nice and sweet :)
was initially hesitant to eat grocery market sushi, but i eat it here quite frequently and found it to be pretty yummy.
great selection of beer/soda and other beverages. a little limited on overall selection, but considering I don't cook, it's not too much of an inconvenience.
the checkout people are always really nice. one time I went in with a $10 bill for like 3 items and the total wound up being like $11 or $12 bucks, but the guy was like, 'you're in here all the time, ...." and he graciously discounted my stuff to 9bucks and change. rad.
:)
oh, and sometimes you'll find a little kitty roaming around the back by the milk.... cute as can be.
- decent food selection
- a bit pricey
- ask to see their resident kitty
As a former Deli-man/sandwich maker at this place I can whole-heartedly say this place is the shit. For the relative size of this place they stock an amazing assortment of products and fruits (which by the way are always fresh).
As I sampled almost everything that can be readily eaten here I have a few suggestions for those interested. First of all, the chicken salad is off the chains. Seriously, I have never had chiken salad anywhere that even remotely rivals this stuff. There are more than a few people (myself included) that are literally addicted to the stuff like crack!
Secondly, the sushi is made fresh daily and for what you get, its incredibly cheap. Also if you can get over the look of the stuff (not gonna lie, it took me a while to build up the courage to try it), the seaweed salad is damn good too.
Finally, the sandwiches that are made hear are worth every cent. As a former sandwich artist here I must say that there are worth the price and (sometimes) wait. And with a little friendly chat the guys behind the counter will be sure to make a sandwhich you wont soon forget.
St. Mark's Market has been incredibly convenient for me. The price of food is, I guess, a little expensive.. but still less than Whole Foods. The market, although lacking any signs, is small and organized enough to be easily navigated. I don't think they've ever not carried anything that I needed. Beware, though! By the deli there is a section filled with chocolates and candies... ones with interesting and tempting packages.
There is usually good music playing, too.. which is wonderful.. but probably causes me to buy more than I really need. And sometimes a kitty walks around the store! (I am undecided on whether I think this is gross or not)
This small market is in the middle of St. Mark's Place.
There is not a big sign outside, prices are kinda expensive but it is open 24/7 which is good!
You can find some produce, fish market, sushi, deli, snacks, general groceries and organic products.
They also have a nice selection of beer.
Convenient small grocery in terms of location (at least for me), and due to its 24/7ness.
Yes, certain types of items are a bit over-priced, but no more so than Whole Foods. The fruits, veggies, and pre-made sushi are all pretty nice, and they have a fairly nice selection of cheeses for a small place.
Also a ton of specialty olive oils and different sort of accent products, which are nice when you want to spice something up.
Staff is friendly and best of all, the line moves quickly.
Great sandwiches (make your own) and sushi. 24 hours!!
This place is a bit pricey for a starving artist...but the foods are so pretty and fresh that I tend to splurge here.
And by splurge, i still mean a really good deal. Try getting your sandwich personalized at the deli counter. For $5.50, you get a choice of bread, meat, 3 veggies, 1 cheese, and dressing. I like the black forest ham with alfalfa, romaine, and tomato--but I honestly think there is no such thing as a bad combination.
And sometimes the result is such a huge sandwich, it takes a small person two sittings to finish (or one crazily hungry person to be fully satistfied).
But thats not all folks, there are also huge salads for $4.95, sushi and edamame, or even that fancy dessert counter that I haven't gotten around to trying.
And then at the back of the store, I always tempt myself with some fancy brew or bizarre japanese energy drink, but end up getting orangina. Then I consider getting some fresh produce but by now I've run out of time and have to get back to class.
Wave hi to the friendly cashiers. You will be back, trust me.
I avoided this place like the plague when it first opened, largely because of it's neighbors. The thought that a Chipotle and SuperCuts replaced the big old community center that was here when I lived in the EV was too depressing for words.
And then, one day during work, I needed to get out of the office for awhile and grab lunch. After ten minutes of indecision, I finally ducked in.
This place is AWESOME. I don't know why people think it's so expensive -- there's a lot of organic, healthful stuff sale here that's always a dollar more at places like Whole Foods or a natural food store. I can frequently grab a complete $6 - $7 lunch here (sandwich, soda, soy chips or pre-made salad, iced teany or more), which is cheap as hell to me. What's more, they've got a great selection of fresh bread, produce, and a great selection of faux meat/soy products for such a little store.
Seriously...awesome.
Fruit, crackers, sushi, meats, deli, anything you need...and it's 24hrs! Love it.
This is the best market I've been able to find around the area. They're reasonably large with a good selection and decent prices. Pretty much all you can really ask for unless you shop at whole foods (elitist prick).
really good sandwiches - especially roast beef with horseradish sauce, lettuce and tamayters. John C. McGinley and his staff of sandwich aides are quick and precise. sorry if stars wars man isn't there anymore, theres another good sidekick who makes a mean sandwich. good cheap flowers too as well as a great assortment of beer, snacks and fresh bread. clean and well run.
Great Prices and Selection. I live on this street and was nervous that such a over populated street with restaurants would not carry a decent market. Low and behold this place was amazing. By the way this place is 24 hours- 7 days a week- 12 months a year.
This wonderful little market has already been thoroughly and well reviewed. So all I can add is a little perspective.
As an office worker and recent refugee from Times Square, I love this little market. The cheap to quality ratio is extremely favorable and, if you're not a starving artist/student, it's crazy cheap. A $5 salad with more and fresher toppings than you get at the make-your-own-salad joints, combined with a 39 cent roll from one of the city's best bakeries is perfect. Their sandwiches genuinely are two meals in one; two very delicious meals.
This place has been great for my diet, great for my health, great for my snobbish food standards, and great for my savings account.
Small, clean, organized, quiet, with a great selection of grocery and produce items. You'll surely find the cup of noodles, bottled beverage, or other non-perishable food item you were probably looking for by walking into this shop. They even have sushi but I dont really recommned it .
My helpful hint is the bread selection: they stock balthazar and tom cat baguettes, and a bunch of other random good stuff from the city's best bakeries.
I know it's sacreligious, but the Tom Cat baguette is the best.
In general though, I agree, it's a good place to stop for a few things, and the deli is good in a pinch. They usually have a good beer special as well-something interesting like smuttynose, or magic hat seasonals.
omg there are so many things here. Discovered this place through a friend( i know cliche) but they do have good sandwiches.
This bobo market was much needed on the seedy stretch of St. Mark's. The pre-maid food is fab, especially the sushi, and the made-to-order sandwiches are giant and very yummy.
LOVE "pre-maid"
I love this place. This is the first store where I found my love - Limeade. So refreshing and so good. They have all sorts of random beverages and snacks, as well as sandwiches and such at the prepared foods counter. Go here!
Mmm, I love you, little yuppie grocery store. This is definitely a common stop for me both to and from work... it's not a place where you can do some heavy duty grocery shopping, but it's great for picking up some nice produce, certain staples, and little splurge items like fancy frozen goods, gourmet ice creams, and silly organic crap. They have a little deli area that looks like it has good stuff, but I've never taken advantage of it. The pre-made sandwiches and salads they have are quite yummy, though, for when I'm feeling too lazy to actually make dinner. They also tend to have rotating sales on types of good beer (like, between $6-7 for yummy brands).
