If you're interested in sampling some fine Missouri wines, St. James Winery is definitely worth a visit.  You can sample all of their wines for free in-store or buy some cheese and other goodies to compliment your wine.  While MO wines do tend to run rather sweet, they've got some dry reds and whites that are surprisingly sophisticated.  Prices are very reasonable, about $10 or less per bottle, so you can pick up a few for under $50.

(I recommend trying the Norton, Chambourcin, Cynthiana, and Friendship School Red.)

I have a soft spot for this place as my dad was once a resident at the Veterans Home on the other side of the highway from here.  I love all of their wines and they do have a nice variety.  I am highly partial to the country red - a semi sweet wine.  Hubs calls it my "cow wine" because of the cow on the label.  You can't go wrong with any of their wines IMHO.  And if its too sweet and fruity for you, well then you can cook with it!  ( A little for the pot then a little for me, a little more for the pot a little more for me )

Reasonably priced and the coolest part of the deal - the bottles are out and you sometimes can pour your own samples.  Otherwise they are more than happy to give you samples.  Even the grape juice they make is delish!  They also have tshirts, cheeses, jerky, jams, cookbooks.

Stopped here on our way to Arkansas for some wine for the weekend.  I would not say I am a wine/winery connoisseur, I like trying the wines, and the same would go even if I was just eating out at dinner.

Compared to the wineries that I have been to in Defiance and Hermann, I felt that St. James was not as friendly.  There was one side of the wine tasting area that was free, and one that was like a membership side or something... You could pay for it, but since I'm not one to ask a lot of questions, I shied away from it altogether.

It was Christmas time when we went and I loved the decorations, it felt very home-y and clean.  I enjoyed walking around and looking at different items for sale.

Pretty cool place to stop if you are passing by.  The sweeter wines are pretty good.  The dry reds are a little bit of an acquired taste but I am not an expert.

They have preserves and grape juice that are really great too.  If you buy 6 or more bottles you get 10% off (including grape juice).

Oh yeah, and they have free tasting.  Just step up and try all of the dozen or so they have to offer.

    Most wines are under $10.

If you like your wines cheap and sweet, then stop on it!  They'll give you free samples.  You can also buy some cheese.

Then go down to the Mule Trading Post and buy some old stuff.

    Free samples.

I got a nice cookbook here, and the most jamming preserves ever!

I bought a bottle of the Country Red, but am saving it for a special occasion.

There is nothing more fun to do than to support these local places.

One of my families favorite Missouri Wineries. It's right off of 44 so we stop for some "Tasting" and to stock up on the way to or from St. Louis.  If you like Missouri wines and haven't tried St. James yet, You're missing out.
