I have only eaten here for lunch but have really enjoyed it. I find their food fresh and the flavors unique and tasty. The setting is quirky and upscalish but can be a bit cold temperature wise.
My fave sandwich is the crab cake club with roasted garlic asiago mayo and topped with smoked salmon served on brioche bun. The beef brisket sandwich was very flavorful too, I loved the creamy horseradish and the carmelized onions.
The spinach salad I had was awesome with spiced walnuts, hearts of palm and red onion tossed with strawberry poppyseed dressing topped with a goat cheese fritter. Ok a cheesy fritter is happy.
The fish and chips I tasted were very good indeed.
Service is unremarkable but the food is really a treat. It was crowded with a definite ladies who lunch and businessman crowd which detracts from it for me personally but I am just that way. I prefer real people.
All in all good quality and not unreasonable priced.
I'll preface this by saying the place definitely has potential; maybe the cook was hungover or something.
Went for brunch around 1 on a Saturday. We were seated immediately, as the place was full of loud wealthy retirees talking about how many times they'd been to Italy. Minus 1 star. I don't care how your portfolio is doing.
I ordered the Eggs Benedict, my personal crack. I thought it was cool that it was served on ciabatta rather than an English muffin. The bread was the only good part, though. The egg yolks were as solid as a hard boiled egg - I know it's tough to poach an egg, but if you royally screw it up that much you should take it off the menu. I only ate the potatoes because I was starving - it seemed like they made a huge batch and microwaved a portion for each plate - although they appeared well-cooked and crispy, they were little cubes of rubber. Minus 2 stars.
Our waiter was very good, as was the flourless chocolate cake. If you go for brunch, I would not recommend getting an egg dish. I'd consider giving them a chance next time I'm in St. Louis, though.
It's pretty hard when you start out at a 5 for me. I mean, you have to earn that five and then you have to work to keep it. Some places keep getting better with age, but I feel like this place just isn't as good as it used to be. I used to love eating here, thought the food was so good and I loved the ambiance. Then I had a less than perfect experience, then it got a little worse. Then again, a little worse. Now, I just think it's alright and generally, when I head to Lafayette Square, I go across the street to Soda Fountain Square, which is owned by the same people and has well, more food choices for far cheaper.
I still love their fries, they have amazing fries. I still like the ambiance. I just don't really love the prices I am paying for food that well...could be better. I do have to say, I love their breakfast and it is probably one of my favorite Sunday morning breakfast spots in the entire city. Generally though, I have become disenchanted with Sqwires. It's still good, just not as good as it is in my memories.
I was so taken aback by Sqwires due to their greatness that I simply had to write a review of them. I went the other day for lunch and had a wonderful surprise. No where else have I had mussels served in the style that they are in Southern France except for here. The mussels are in a nice broth and are served fantastically with thick cut fries! Moules a frites! Not only that, but the dish was delicious. That alone earned them four stars, the fact that our server was courteous and attentive would have earned Sqwires another four stars if it were possible. Alas, there was but one more star to give. For my entree I had the chicken salad, and that too was fantastic.
I want to try coming for dinner when they have a live band, as I've heard that it is a lot of fun. For now, I cannot attest to that. All I can say is that the food and the service are both great - but isn't that enough for a restaurant?
I ended up coming here for my sister's birthday one Tuesday evening. The atmosphere is trendy and fun, nice lighting, and not cramped. They could accommodate our whole group, which was nearly 15 people, and that in itself is pretty impressive.
However, when it comes to the food, I was pretty unimpressed. I had a Spinach salad which was definitely tasty, but way too expensive for what I got. $10 for a salad that didn't even leave me very satisfied? Eh. Not so good.
My husband had some kind of steak with sweet potatoes. I'm not sure he left full either, and his meal was twice the price of mine. The food itself was pretty good, but I have a hard time justifying spending that kind of money on food that's just pretty good. We also ended up getting dessert which was some kinda of pumpkin trifle.
I thought it was fine, but not quite what I'd expected. Once again, just ok.
As a whole, I'd say this restaurant was fine, but forgettable. I'm sure I won't be venturing back there anytime soon.
Went in the other night to hear some live music (Kevin Bilchik and Blake Travis) and brought about 5 people w/ us.
Mostly came to hang out and hear music and get drinks and they were really fine w/ that. I did order a wonderful spinach salad to split w/ hubby and they divided it for us instead of tossing down an extra plate (nice touch).
The food is a bit pricey for us, but LOVE the atmosphere and the service was perfect!
I hear they have a nice breakfast too....may have to go back for that.
We stumbled in last night and had a pretty good experience here. It started out weird so I really thought Sqwires would turn out like ass. We walked up to the podium and the waiter/host person said "Hi, can I help you?"
"How are your carpets? Because I've got a product for you!"
"Why yes, do you have a few minutes for the lord Jesus Christ?"
"this is a restaurant right?"
I just thought that was an odd question to pose.
Our waiter was fine, once I realize he wouldn't get above a whisper. The dinner rolls were actually incredible - nice & light, with a perfect crust. We had the calamari for an appetizer, which was quite good. Not too heavily deep fried and the uneven pieces tell me that it didn't come from a bag.
Sue had the duck breast, which was tender. It came with a side of cranberry sauce, stuffing and sauteed spinach. I had the braised short ribs. They were pretty good, but the excess fat could've been trimmed off. They were served over potatoes.
Not bad. A little pricey. Nothing really to draw us back tho.
3.5 stars.
First of all, I love the atmosphere here! I just appreciate the exposed brick, interesting lighting and artwork, and the renovated look.
I've been here for a few lunches, and I have always been impressed. It's not overly pricey. You could easily spend the same amount at an Applebee's or T.G.I Friday's and not have the same caliber of experience. I have had their turkey burger a few times, and it's what made me realize you don't need beef for a burger! It was full of flavor, covered in veggies and served on a freshly baked bun. They also have great salads, made of greens that are actually, well, green and fresh.
At night, they have decent live music and a decent-sized bar. You can certainly pick a worse place to have a drink.
I stopped by Sqwires the other day for lunch. Since we had a break in the weather and there were no signs of some of the terrific thunderstorms that we have been having I felt like eating outside. We were seated promptly because I believe we were just ahead of the lunch rush since we were eating a pretty early lunch that day.
Well looking over the menu I quickly found what I wanted to eat, a turkey Reuben sandwich. I was wondering how the turkey would make one of my most favorite sandwiches taste so I waited in anticipation for it to arrive, which it soon did. The turkey Reuben was exactly what I thought it would be, a Reuben made with turkey. It was nice and tasty and they were generous with the whole sandwich.
Sqwires is a great place that I enjoyed eating at.
Eclectic, comfortable, trendy, and authentic all at once.
I liked this place, but always seemed to have some trouble going when the restaurant portion was open (other than at dinner time). Their website makes it look like they are always open, but sometimes the kitchen is actually closed. Try their macadamia nut calamari.
Great restaurant. Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere. When people from downtown come here for lunch, you know it's gotta be good.
