3 reviews for Squatters
Squatters is one of the oldest and perhaps the best brewpub in SLC. A contemporary feel and spacious atmosphere are quite inviting. The focus is on the bar and the "beer wall" that lists the current offerings. Seasonals cycle through in a matter of weeks so you're always anxious to see what is new.
Service is as good as it gets. The employees are obviously trained in beer knowledge and it refreshing.
Food isn't quite traditional pub fare. You can still order a gourmet burger or pizza, but they offer many ethnic dishes as well. Prices are more than reasonable for downtown SLC. I enjoy the Reuben sandwich and order garlic fries regardless of which entree I've chosen.
They're a little lax on enforcing some of the Utah laws compared to other establishments. I was able to have a few beers without pressure to order food. They serve full strength beers as well (not the 3.2 beers) because they sell them to the state of Utah who in turn sells them back to the restaurant. Absurd, I know, but at least I can have a full strength IPA if I want one.
The beer is phenomenal, for Utah. Full Suspension, Captain Bastard's, St. Provo Girl, etc. The seasonals are often the best beers on tap such as HopHead Red, Irish Stout, etc. Many GABF awards are proudly displayed. If you're serious about beer, then this is your place.
Easy to find, on the south side of the street. Can be very busy Fri/Sat nights.
Dude. Weak. I give this place some credit for being one of the first microbreweries in SLC, a hostile brewing environment. But other than...dude. Weak. Literally. If you want a beer on tap, you need to sit at the front HALF of the bar (they apparently don't have an arcane Utah license for the back half of the bar), and, all the beers served on promise are less than 4% ABV. Crazy. I had the sampler and I gotta say, had they been done right, they would be pretty great beers. But seriously, this just doesn't work out for me. Also, Uinta and other microbrews from Utah were actually way tastier than these...
This is the 3rd microbrew/restaurant (aka "brewpub") i've been to in SLC. They're into their beers here, which was real nice for me : D. i had to try this one, for the rest of the restaurants in this area were mostly chains (pf changs, buca di beppo, macaroni bar & grill) all decent but blah, blah blah. Plus i don't do the familiar when i'm traveling.
The place is a stylish brewpub with the brewery in good visible view, unpolished wood floors, brick walls and exposed wood beam ceiling. The place had an open kitchen and the place was 75% full at dinner and you can comfortably hold a conversation without having to hold a hand behind an ear.
looked over the menu and decided within 3 min. cause like clock work, i was starving after shredding the snow all day. I ordered the Alaskan salmon with a ginger-shitake sauce and decided to split a Buffalo burger for an app, last minute. (did i mention i was hungry). The burger had crisp onion strings, cheddar and a stout bbq sauce. The meat was quite "beefy" oh let me rephrase that "bison-y" in flavor, and quite satisfying. The salmon was "okay", no added texture even though it was grilled and the sauce was over thickened with cornstarch. The flavors were nice (ginger, soy, shitakes) but the gloopy sludge on my fish resembled bad cold gravy, but with the color of bbq sauce. i had thought they had made a mistake and i even had to taste a little sample b4 i scraped most of it off. I also tried a little of the seafood pesto linguine, and that was okay, the pasta being more memorable than the seafood.
I actually give this place 3 n a half stars because the oatmeal stout was worth getting a 2nd pint, even after being really full from dinner. It had a chocolatey/dark roast coffee flavor and finish that lingered for days in a very smooth, textured ale. Close to a guiness but with American microbeer uummpphh. Also the name was funny, Captain Bastard's Oatmeal Stout. The name drew me but the flavor got me. A must try.
