"Beautiful hotel right on the beach. Amazing pool and shell beach is just a great location (lived there for a year)."

We needed to escape the Santa Barbara fires at the last minute, and Spyglass was one of 3 dog-friendly hotels in Pismo. They had a great rate of $149 a night, which was more than $100 less than the other places I called. Our room was very clean - modern and nicely decorated. There were LOTS of dogs at this hotel, so if you have a dog and are on a budget, this is definitely the place. If you don't like dogs, maybe not a good choice for you.
I agree with others that the pool was a bit disappointing since it was in the middle of the parking lot, but the view from the bluffs was fantastic. If I stayed here again I would pay a bit more for an ocean view room. The two resorts next door were obviously much more swanky than the Spyglass, but no doubt they charged $300 or more per night. For the price, I have no complaints. My dog and I would stay here again, fo sho.
First of all, I'd like to commend the photographer who took their photos, as they'd did a phenomenal job making this place look like more than it is.
It's a motel, with renovated rooms. The rooms are nice enough, but at the end of the day it's still a motel. The walls are paper thin. (Rooms all have doors that adjoin them). Really, you can hear everything. God forbid you have a baby next door, as was our misfortune. And then there was that issue with the toilet being clogged the entire weekend.
The pool is 5 feet deep at the center and 3 at the sides. Oh, and ice cold.
The location, however, couldn't be better. If you surf, it's just a short walk to the stairs by the Cliffs leading to great surf . The view is spectacular. I only had breakfast at the restaurant, but it was decent. They have a great $4.95 pancake, bacon egg deal for motel guests. I gotta say they make a pretty mean bloody mary.
If you have a dog, this is a good choice for you as all of the ground floor rooms are dog friendly. The rooms are clean, if you don't mind not having any privacy and you aren't a light sleeper, this might be okay for you. Otherwise, I'd venture elsewhere.
It was clean, comfortable, had a very friendly staff and is in a great location. It's not the most modern or upscale of hotels, but you can't beat it for the price. Plus, we didn't upgrade to the ocean view room, but had a perfect view of the ocean from our balcony.
The resort isn't quite as nice as the website depicts, unfortunately, but it was still a perfectly suitable hotel. Our room faced the pool, but it was still quiet in the mornings, despite the fact the hotel was completely packed and we were concerned with the potential noise level. It was located pretty conveniently to everywhere we needed to go (we were doing research on the Oceano Dunes), while allowing for some escape from the hectic beach-town scene.
Wow, the Spyglass Inn hasn't made much of an impression on the previous two reviewers. This is my second time staying here and I have had no problems either time. The rooms are VERY CLEAN. I happen to just love crappy coffee. I think the layout is beautiful. Nothing is nicer than being right out on the ocean and sitting out on your front deck and drinking cheap beer while looking at this view: http://www.yelp.com/us... No, my dad will not. I repeat WILL NOT buy expensive beer. I think the gardens to take a walk in are gorgeous. You can have pets on the property. They even have poop bags in containers. This is a dog haven. The pool is small, but it does the job for an expert tanner.
At the front desk there are always fresh baked cookies and they don't care if I take one pack, two packs, or pull a ninja, and sneak in to take out the team, and take the whole container. Muhaha! Daniel San!
And it's in the cute little town of Pismo.
This hotel had great service and had a beautiful view. The room was very expensive but it was because we were there on the 4th of July weekend. It was a great place to relax, take in the ocean and just chill out.
There is a really nice walkway from the spyglass to the other hotels in shell beach along the ocean and at the end of the trail you can take some stairs down to get beach access.
The only negative I would say is that there may be a mold problem in the bathroom. My BF woke up the next day very congested from allergies and the bathroom very suspiciously had wallpaper that was peeling off the wall.
Stay here if you are cheap.
The place is not awesome: my room smelled like wet dog and cigarettes (it was a non smoking room), and the pool was packed with drunken trashy people all day. However, the restaurant has a nice view, the rates are low, and the area is beautiful.
I went with my wife and spent four nights and five days from 6/25/09 to 6/29/09. The purpose of the trip was to attend an event at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and to do R&R in between sessions. We had a double queen, non-smoking room on the second floor on the SE corner. This would be one of their pool view rooms.
The room was excellent. Clean all the way around. New wall papering throughout the room including the bathroom. Either new or well-kept furnishings. Plush bed with 6 pillows per bed. Clean and new-looking carpet. The room is well-lit. There was ample room, never feeling cramped or closed in. We had a nice sized balcony which had two plastic patio chairs and a table. (Some hotels have a very small, cramped balcony that barely fits the chairs.)
The bed was comfortable. The mattress is not firm, if that is important to you. The many pillows gave you a choice of plump, soft, or firm.
The bathroom had two sinks, one wet bar type with a goose neck faucet outside of the bathroom proper. Here was the coffee maker and the hairdryer with a large mirror. Underneath the sink in the cabinet was a small refrigerator with two complementary bottles of water. We used it to store some fruit, a quart of milk, and some other items. I cannot comment on the coffee maker or the coffee provided as we do not drink coffee.
The counter for this sink and the sink inside the shower room was a tasteful granite. The mirrors were framed in a type of rustic frame, suggestive of being sea-worn. There were four coffee mugs by the coffee maker and eight Styrofoam cups with the ice canister in the shower room.
The shower room was nicely tiled. Has a large mirror. The shower head was just like home and the water pressure was just like home! Very nice! My pet peeve is turning on the shower and getting rewarded with just a trickle. Never ran out of hot water. The place was even full with a wedding party plus some. The towels are not luxury huge, but they are generously large and reasonably thick. Not the cheapo small, thin towels you find at 2 star hotels. The toilet was not one of those stupid, wimpy California conserve water types that you wonder if it could even flush liquid. It has a good solid flush to it. (Had to include that observation--I know it is important to some people.) :)
There was a closet, not large, but large enough for us. Might be slightly cramped for a party of four. Ironing board and a box fan along with two extra pillows. Oh yes, and two complementary bath robes. (Complementary to use, not to take!)
There was a door between our room and it was the only source of sound during the whole stay. But it was only once in a while with certain conversations. Couldn't figure that one out. Maybe it was how they might be positioned toward their side of the door at times. But ??? In the five days and four nights we were there, we only heard voices two or three brief times. Not even an issue with our stay.
The front desk staff was always helpful and pleasant. At the front desk there were fresh Otis Spunkmeyer chocolate chip cookies in the afternoon. Fresh apples in the morning. Didn't try their restaurant, even though they offered a breakfast special for tenants for $4.95. (Two pancakes, bacon, and toast, I think.) As a parting gift, they gave me a $50 gift card for a future stay between Sept. and December.
Short walk to beach access. The hotel sits on the Pismo cliffs, so there is a nice view. Between the hotel and the edge of the cliffs is a garden/grass area with paths. Every hotel down the stretch of these cliffs has there own garden area and all areas are connected with a walkway. The hotel restaurant has a patio view in the back.
Free WiFi high speed internet in rooms. It has a business center that they said was complementary. Outdoor pool and jacuzzi. Regular TV with free HBO and plenty of channels. But take "plenty of channels" with a grain of salt as our family does not watch TV so we are not a good judge of that for all you Dish and Cable people out there.
We ate at some fantastic places in the area: Honeymoon Cafe (breakfast burrito, granola, and outdoor grill (on weekends) french toast and pancakes; Splash Café; Mo's BBQ; Old West Cinnamon Rolls; Thai Kitchen (in Arroyo Grande). We recommend them all whole-heartedly.
We liked the location. It was a GREAT price (get their deals on their internet site) and everything in the area is only 10 to 15 minutes away. 10 min. to SLO, 10 min. to Arroyo Grande, 15 -20 minutes to Morro Bay. Really loved it.
I don't know the particulars about hotel star ratings, but this was definitely a step above your Days Inns/Super 8/Econolodge types. Even better than some Best Westerns. I didn't want to spend a fortune on a room, but I wanted it to be clean and NICE. Something enjoyable and that I wouldn't mind spending my money on. This fit the bill perfectly.
I GOT MY MONEY'S WORTH!
The place is very beautiful for a very affordable price. Fireplace and a breathtaking view. They accept dogs too just as long as the dogs are supervised and not loud. If there was a screen door, it would have been perfect so you can open the door facing the ocean at night without worries. The phone in our room wasn't working but luckily we had our cellphones with us. Important tidbit, it's a dead zone for wi-fis. my iphone's internet will not work at least a mile around this place.
For the price, it definitely could be a lot better. But that is what I get for coming to Pismo Beach during the Memorial Day weekend without any hotel reservation.
Pluses: clean, ocean view, short walk to the beach, friendly front desk staff
Minuses: pricey for the basic accomodation, walls are pretty thin. no microwave in the suite
Eh.. decent hotel, wait staff was very nice and helpful. website does a great job advertising for this place because it doesn't look nearly so nice in real life. the small pool is in the middle of the parking lot.. and it is quite a sad sight. when you walk down the pathway along the cliffs.. you will feel quite jealous as the other two properties: Cliffs Resort and Dolphin Bay absolutely blow this place out of the water... by ALOT.. there's no activities here.. and it's not nearly as lively or full as the other hotels. The view is nice. the attached restaurant is a bit overpriced and the food looks better on the menu then it does in real life.
Rooms are nice quality, there's a fridge but no air conditioning. bathrooms are nice. overall the rooms are good but the limited amenities at the hotel bring the rating down
