4 reviews for Spunky Monkey Bar & Grill
We ate in the 'family area' / basement. Well decorated, comfortable. New server, newish staff that tried hard, but couldn't answer questions well. Didn't know about the bar food menu until we walked out and saw one on another table. It seemed strange that the dinner menu didn't have any appetizers.
Soup of the day was Southern Green Bean. Good clear broth and not too salty.
Steak was perfectly cooked and the 'brown sugar and herb crust' was a good adventure. Not very crust-y, but great mix of herbs and horseradish and sugar. BBQ Chicken Pizza had a great crust, but too much BBQ and not enough chicken.
Bred puddling and chocolate cake were both good.
When the bar upstairs started rocking the evening started to drag downstairs. We were the only people being served and it still took an hour for dinner. We could hold a conversation, but the thumping and singing from upstairs was a distraction.
Rating deductions:
1 pt - speed of service ( or lack there of)
1 pf - music volume
My husband and I moved to Auburn less than a year ago and have been to the Spunky Monkey twice. Once for dinner in the downstairs area and once for drinks and entertainment at the bar. Both times were enjoyable for many reasons. Dinner was somewhat private, not crowded, good food and the staff was great. I especially enjoy the peanut butter smoothie/shake. Upstairs for drinks I would say the specialty drinks taste pretty good, a little on the sweet side and pretty spendy. But we enjoyed a few of them nonetheless. The "regulars" and the karaoke performances were quite memorable. The bar staff was very welcoming, friendly and helpful in picking out drinks.
This place has a fun atmosphere and karaoke. One think I liked is that to order a drink you stand in line and wait your turn like civilized people instead of a giant mob of people pushing their way to the bar.
3.5 on my scale
SPUNKY MONKEY DRINKS AND JOHN FROM BELLEVUE
Memories here! A night unforgettable. It was my last birthday celebrated with my cousin/bestest friend before she passed away. It was my pre-party before my big party the following weekend. So my cousin said we should just hang out at Muckelshoot Casino. One of our other friends set up the meet up at Spunky Monkey, none of us ever been there in our lives. But i wanted something fun and random. We rolled up to Spunky Monkey and looked at each other "this isn't a restaurant we expected it to be?" as we see three cops man handling a drunk outside. but we walked in anways with my huge birthday cake, a big group of colored folks, and all my presents. We walked up the stairs and the entire bar was starring at us as if we walked in the wrong place. The dinner area was closed, only the bar was open. So we looked at them and turned around about to go elsewhere because we felt uncomfortable. But one of the waitresses stopped us and welcomes us in. Everyone here must be a regular because onces the waitresses welcomed, they all welcomed us. They set up some tables in the backroom with the pool tables and darts. We had our "bar eats" and drinks and continued with our festivities. Everyone was SO kind. Even the regulars and randoms. OH THERE WERE MANY strange but nice randoms there.
We met the bartenders. They were awsome. A random named "John from Bellevue" who claims he hardly goes to Spunky Monkey but all the regulars seem to know him as if he went there every weekend hung out with us. It was a strange night but it sure was SO fun. Enjoying our bar food and AMAZING DRINKS (thanks to the bartender who's wife works at Muckelshoot) it was very memorable.
Then all of a sudden then had karaoke going on. We made some of the regulars sing our "gangsta" type of music. It was hilarious, all out of kicks and good times! I wouldn't think I'd celebrate my 27th bday in this area but I did! It was like saying goodbye to old friends when we had to leave to go to Muckelshoot Casino. John from Bellevue had drunk-promised us we will meet at Spunky Monkey once again on my 28th bday. We'll see about that!
SERVICE AND DRINKS, amazing!
