13 reviews for Spruzzo's
After a long, relaxing day at the beach with some friends/with some hangovers, we were all starving before we knew it and all craving different things. A couple of us wanted a salad, one of us wanted pizza, and a couple wanted seafood. Hmmm. Dilemma.
2 of my friends had been to Spruzzo's and suggested it because they have a pretty extensive menu...and with my group of friends, you NEED an extensive menu. We're all really picky bitches, haha.
Anyway, so we walk in and it's really nice. Absolutely no one was sitting inside, because well, why would you want to sit inside when it's summertime and you're having lunch in Malibu? Not to mention Spruzzo's offers some amazing views of PCH, the hills, and the ocean. I rest my case.
So we sit outside and they bring us some of their fresh homemade focaccia which was pretty damn tasty. My best friend and i split the Chinese Chicken Salad and the Potrobello Mushroom sandwich, and both were seriously absolutely delicious. We couldn't finish because the portions are pretty generous, but we sure tried. We wanted to originally get a pizza and a salad, but when we saw that a small margherita pizza there was $15 bucks we changed our mind, haha. Kind of ridiculous to charge that much for such a simple pizza.
A couple friends of mine got the BBQ Chicken Salad and both said that it was good except the "herb ranch dressing" had a really weird flavor that they weren't very fond of.
But overall, we were all really satisfied with our meals. I would be down to come back again sometime, but i'd like to come for dinner to take advantage of the firepit, and the wide open patio views of the sky. Maybe i'll actually get to see some shooting stars in LA for once.
I might be a little generous giving this place 4 stars as the service was slow. I give it 3.5 stars. My friend and I sat outside on the patio since it was such a nice day. Great view of the ocean! I had the Fresh Ahi Tuna sandwich and a bowl of Minestrone soup. Delish! My friend had the Portobello Mushroom burger minus the mushroom and with chicken instead. She said it was the best burger she's had there. The portions are pretty big. I just barely finished my sandwich; my friend took half of it home.
Overall, it was a nice place and I would go back, but the service was slow. No patrons inside at all and there were a couple of groups outside, but it wasn't packed by any means. There were only two servers, but even then I thought the service was slower than it should've been. It took a while to get our bill and then another wait for us to get change. We had to literally walk up to the register and stand there so that one of the servers would notice us to give us our change!!
I went to eat here with a big group during a running event we did last week. I called in to see if they would take a group of 14(within 15 minutes) and they were quick to accommodate us; our table was already set up by the time we got there.
Now down to the food. Gotta agree with Cindy...the Salmon w/ the mango salsa and creme sauce is awesome. They serve a variety of pastas that are pretty good too(I taste tested everyone's pasta). You're charged an extra dollar per plate to split, but most of the portions are so large that it's better to just split and order an extra side of something else. Add the free foccacia and you're headed towards the land of the sleepy after dinner.
Locale...it's in Malibu, so it's a really nice location to eat that's near the beach. The place itself is pretty nice too; although it's a casual restaurant, it's a very well designed one. Full bar when you come in, lots of tables, even a nice outdoor seating area...that comes with a fire pit in the middle.
Service - I wish it could've been a little better...my minestrone came as my LAST item - after my drink and when I was about 3/4 through my dinner. But then again, I take into account that we were a big group. That's hard for even the best of servers.
A little on the expensive side as far as affordability is concerned, but remember; you're in malibu. You can probably find good food that's comparable for cheaper...but not close to here.
GOOD: Bake Salmon Filet with mango cream sauce and seasonal vegetables. Full bar by the entrance with TV's for sports games. Free foccacia bread.
BAD: Closes really early, like at 9 or 10 on week nights.
ICING ON THE CAKE: Located right across from Zuma Beach, has an outdoor patio that accommodates large parties. Perfect for sunset dinners.
If you're in Malibu and are not sure where to eat, consider Spruzzo. Kid friendly, good service and its never super packed. Great food with entrees ranging from $10-15. Parking is a bit difficult though, you can park across the street at the beach and walk over.
Good food, slow staff, but marvellous panorama on Zuma Beach..
Food did it's job - filled my tummy.
Service was uber slow - I think the first girl forgot about us, so after about 20 minutes of just sitting there looking around a new guy came up to us and took our order. From that point on, service was good. It was quick and he followed up to check on everything.
The food was not great by any means... I was a little surprised to get a nicoise salad with FULLY cooked ahi tuna. Generally, the ahi is flash seared, but this was seared all the way through. The fish itself was still decent, and by decent I mean fresh enough to eat... but had I known that the ahi would be cooked through, I would have ordered a chicken salad.
Oh yeah - the bread was uber yummy, and the outdoor patio seating with a view of Zuma beach made it worthwhile.
Who knew that Gerbers Baby food made Turkey meatball sandwiches sold at Spruzzo's.
Five of us stopped for lunch after a charity walk at Zuma Beach. One person ordered Fish and chips which she described as over battered and very mushy inside. She left it on the plate.
I had the afore-mentioned Gerbers meatball sandwich which was as taste-less as described. The waiter told me it came with a side of fries, then when the bill arrived I found he had billed me extra for the fries.
My wife ordered a simple Hamburger-plain which came with everything on it. The menu said burgers came with fries and again we were charged extra for her fries.
The other two ordered a simple salad and said it was fine.
I think this place "might " be good for ordering a drink and watching the sun set, but otherwise I would steer clear of this place.
I'm sorry, but whenever somebody says "Let's Go to Spruzzo's," a part of me dies a little. I hate Spruzzo's. I have never liked Spruzzo's. It's perched on the 2nd story of the ugliest strip-mall in Malibu, and has the distinction of being the only eatery of the new millennium to have stayed staunchly faithful to the adage: "Nothing brings them in like Neon." Recently, somebody said to me "Did you know that Spruzzo's has a bar now?" And I'm proud of them. Good for you, Spruzzo's, it only took you 15 fucking years to put on your flip flops and walk on over to the liquor license office, but better late than never, right guys?
Listen, Spruzzo's -- I'm not fooled by your little make-over. You may have taken the Raphael, Leonardo and Donatello Pizzas off the menu, but you've STILL got the Michaelangelo, and everybody knows you ain't talking about the artists.
"I'm hungry." That's how it always starts.
"Well then, how about we order some pizza from upstairs? I got a pizza from there yesterday that was half Combo and half Santa Fe, and it was pretty good."
I was hungry (as stated before), he was offering to pay, I acquiesced.
The combo half had a nice bite due to the diced garlic on top, and the crust was thin enough to fold a nice pizza burrito. The Santa Fe half.... I'm iffy about. It had that spicy onion mix on it that kinda hurt going down, and I'm skeptical about putting sour cream on a pizza- sour cream on anything, for that matter. So I could be biased.
This place has a nice outdoor sitting area that affords a great view of the ocean, but I don't find the food to be impressive.
So I was scared to try this place after seeing the dismal ratings on Yelp, but the management must have changed or something because everything I've taken out from this place has been really, really good. I can't speak for the dining experience or the service, but whenever I order for takeout, the service is always fast and friendly, and they give very generous portions. Their rigatoni pesto w/chicken was really yummy. The chicken and fish dishes have always been good. I'm not sure why this place has been knocked down but the reviews on Citysearch are more favorable and I think more aligned with my opinion of this place. If you're in the area, don't be scared to check this place out.
Sure, it is kind of average(for Maliboobians, that is to say), but it never is crowded, beach attire is fine, easy parking, and at least you can see Zuma from the deck, but the main thing is you can bring your dogs there after a day at the beach. Hell, they like the menu better than I do, so four stars, damn it. Woof.
NO STARS!! I found hair on my soup and hair on my sandwhich. How do you get hair on both your dishes!!!!YUKKK!!!! never again.
Overpriced and mediocre. The service was really slow. Granted it was a weekend, but it didn't seem to be too busy. I saw empty tables. We got extra bread, which was nice, because our food took forever to come out. And when it did, it wasn't that great.
