8 reviews for Sprout
I went to Sprout in search of a good salon in Baltimore. I work in DC and could have gone somewhere there after work, but would like to support a local business.
My stylist was Adriana and I really liked her. She did exactly what I asked, giving me long layers while maintaining my length. My color seems to be fading fast, though. Which for me isn't too big of a deal because I'm trying to go back to my natural base color. But for the price I paid, I would have expected it to last longer.
I will definitely go back, though, and ask for Adriana again!
My mother have both been Cliff loyalists and followed him here from Edward Amato. Despite the fact that I no longer live in Baltimore, I won't see anyone but Cliff. Luckily, I love Sprout overall as well.
The salon is beautiful and calming but not in a bland way (thanks to the pop of the neon green chairs and changing art). The stylists play their own musical pics (always good) over the speakers and all have great, friendly, non-snobbish demeanor. The receptionist, Melissa, is as sweet as can be. She is helpful with the product lines, will offer you tea or water while you wait and most importantly--always calls me if there is a cancellation (and i've asked for a last minute appointment.)
Their house organic products are nice but I favor the John Masters stuff they use. The scalp massage and shampoo is AMAZING, but don't be late for your appointment or you won't get it (so they can stay on schedule.) Sprout smells subtle and earthy and wonderful- never overwhelming.
Now back to Cliff: Cliff has been voted best hairstylist in Baltimore by the City Paper before. It can be difficult to get an appointment with him, so it is very worth planning this trip and calling in advance. He is calm, talented and quick (dries hair flawlessly while holding two blow dryers in one hand!) and good and interpreting the pictures you bring in to what will work with your face shape.
He is a great listener and has more than a few times steered me clear of making a drastic change because I was in a 'mood'. He'll even tell me, "I'll just keep a little more length than that, and if you still want more off--we'll do it." I have never regretted taking his advice and always leave looking absolutely fabulous. He is very light on product use and all of the great style comes from the cut itself. You won't want to shower for days after a Cliff cut...but then you'll be surprised at how easily you're able to recreate the look yourself.
Cliff is a master of the 'I just woke up looking like this...and isn't it fabulous?" cut. Go immediately! I only wish they did waxing and massage as well...
p.s. Cliff can also fix botched cuts. My sister once got an appalling haircut at Bubbles in Towson Mall. We called Cliff immediately and he was able to turn horrendous into acceptable in minutes. She will just have to fork up the cash and see him from now on, Naturally.
My stylist is Ann and she does a wonderful job with my hair. I like the organic philosophy of the salon and it has a fun DWR vibe to it. I always feel comfortable there even though I am not the typical Hampden Hipster. I see people of all types, from older women, to hipsters, to yuppies. The products they use are top-notch and smell sooo good.
I think the prices are fair, certainly less than a lot of other comparable salons in B-more.
I'm usually a pretty loyal customer once I find a salon and hairstylist that I like and am satisfied by. I was with my old hairstylist for YEARS before he moved to Australia. Then I moved to Austin for a few years and never found anyone I truly liked in the whole time I was there.
I just recently moved to Baltimore and woohoo! First salon I go to is an absolute winner. I picked up a flyer for Sprout at a local movie rental and researched the stylists on their website. I liked Naomi's style the best and requested her when I made my appointment.
Its true, Sprout is a cool, modern salon without being overly so or full of itself. I was instantly comfortable and received a great shampoo and scalp massage by Owen? I think? When Naomi asked if I had an idea of what I wanted the only thing I knew was that I wanted bangs and my overall length not shortened too much. I gave her a limit of not past my chin and left the rest to her.
Wow. I instantly loved my cut and have recieved many compliments already. Usually it takes me a week to grow into a haircut before I really love it. She also offered a free trim for my bangs.
I would have given them 5 stars instead of 4 except for that I've only been there once. I will definitely revise my review to 5 stars if my second experience is anything like my first. Also, the prices are very reasonable. I've paid more for worse cuts.
Sprout is a sleek, chic, but not-too-pretentious "organic" hair salon in Hampden. By organic, I believe they mean that they use eco-friendly hair products (like John Masters Organics and Jonathan products), and, according to their website, 100% wind credit electricity.
Now, I'm not an expert on haircuts or hair salons. I'm the type of woman who gets her hair cut once or twice a year, lets it grow really long, and then wanders aimlessly into a salon and hopes that she'll somehow wind up getting a life-changing haircut. I didn't get a life-changing haircut at Sprout, but I did get a good haircut and a pleasant experience.
The interior is comfortable and quite easy on the eyes. I was even offered a beverage! Yay complimentary stuff. Also, they play good music and it's neither too chatty in there nor too awkwardly quiet. I came here once in January and again in August and saw the same stylist, Holly, who remembered me and was very nice. We discussed what I wanted, I received an expert shampoo from an assistant, Holly went to work, and was in and out of there in an hour.
I'm only deducting a star for only two slightly petty reasons: 1.) I kind of wish I got some more style recommendations from my stylist. Y'know, I hate when you go to a hair salon and they expect you to know, like, all about haircuts as if you too were a hairstylist. I'm not. 2.) After my hair was cut - from shoulder length to chin length, another stylist wandering by exclaimed, a little too sincerely, that I looked SOOO much better than when I walked in. Um, I didn't realize I was such a wreck walking in?
I absolutely love Sprout. Naomi is my hair goddess and I always get what I ask for. She's super sweet and is always accommodating with any style preferences that I might have. The prices are good and the atmosphere is really nice - my hair and scalp always smell amazing after I leave - the products they use are really fantastic. I usually only just get a wash and cut - but its my go-to salon in Baltimore.
i see ann at sprout, and she is the first person to really put any sort of shape or order to my rebellious hair. there's no weird salon smell and the products are great. the prices are comparable to lots of other places where the end result isn't nearly as good. i'm paying less here than a i did at bubbles but now with great hair. and the scalp massage is awesome!
I really like the salon and I heart Leah--she is a fantastic hairdresser and the only person I've found in the past three years who can give me a haircut that I love from day 1 to day 60. I live in DC now but still travel back to see her occasionally...have not found anyone who can fully replace her *tear*.
