Service for dinner here is confusing. I walked into the bar waiting for a group of 5 friends. It was my first time and I walked around for a while before realizing that there was a dining area on the side.
There was DJ setting up playing really lame top 40's music. I sat down and was passed by 4 different servers. I went up to the bar and asked what the protocol was on dinner. She told me to have a seat in the dining room.
When I finally was helped there was no special on beer and the dodgers were playing. Pitchers of Shock top were 16.00 and a pint of bud light was 4.25. WTF? I felt like I was on the west side. The food was ok, I had somosas and potato boats. Both were meh. The buffalo burger was awesome because it was actually an item on the menu, but as far as buffalo burgers go, it was just ok.
To top it all off it was fucking karaoke night. Fucking karaoke night! I hate karaoke night.
Sidenote: will reevaluate because I hear they have 1 dollar bears on fridays.
BOTTOM LINE: Way too pricey for the clovey shit they brought out, but fun times and 18 hd tv's made up for it.
A South African bar & restaurant with a Zagat award-winning menu? Ok, I am SO there!
Ask for a secret menu item called "Rocky's special." It's a generous-sized chicken breast smothered with a yummy creamy mushroom wine sauce. Also comes with mashed potatoes.
This is an upbeat sports bar, especially for football and rugby fans. A lot of folks come here for a drink and/or to unwind.
Gets quite crowded some nights, so parking can be a pain at times.
It's easy to pass by this place and disregard it, but it deserves a chance. The Van Nuys location exterior is very modest. If you are ever at Long Beach Shoreline Village, the Springbok there is more trendy and is right by the water.
There were 21 of us that went to SpringBok for going away lunch for my coworker. I ordered their mussels with garlic sauce with roll. I guess because of all the hype I thought the food will be out of this world. Their appetizer was pretty big and it came with a salad. The mussels were a bit salty for me.
The waitresses were nice but wow I had to take 2 hours for lunch that day. Service was too slow :(
Pleasantly surprised when i went to this hidden gem. Great spot for after work or first stop of the evening. Perfect for MNF and the food is amazing. Samosas were great, fish n chips good and the Kobe burger was excellent. I cant wait to go back
Went on a Thursday night I think, whatever the Rock Band night is. I guess it's a South African restaurant / bar, but honestly I never would have been able to tell. Not that it was dark or anything. Noooo, this place is brighter than the lighting section at Home Depot.
The bar had clovers carved into it, sports crap everywhere, dart boards shoved awkwardly in a corner and waaaaaaay too much wood paneling everywhere. It's also got that "beer-soaked-carpet-and-month-old-frying-oil" smell to it. Everything seemed kinda rickety and falling apart.
I didn't try any of the food, and getting a drink from the very unfriendly bartender was impossible. She was very rude and abrupt and had no idea how to systematically serve a crowd of customers.
I won't be back.
We stopped by because the fiance was in the mood for a burger, and I for a beer.
Their draught selection is good, tending toward the basically British side of things (Guinness, Harp, Boddington's, Newcastle etc.) but not overpriced.
Atmosphere is great, service quite prompt and friendly.
I had the Jan Van Riebeeck's boerewors roll - a beef sausage on fresh-baked roll with a side of "train smash" (stewed tomato and onion) with fries and a salad! Huge portions. It was delicious but a bit on the dry side, though the sauce helped. The burger looked (and tasted) great.
I had a tender Kobe burger that was just right. Great variety on menu for my other guests. Friendly neighborhood vibe including a very helpful waitress. If you happen to be in the center of the Valley this is a great place to go. There's an Outdoor patio and a traditional Bar. A great meeting place for groups and friends.
I went here based on the strength of my friend Nic's camera pic of his Springbox burger on FB yesterday.
I was not disappointed.
The restaurant itself it pretty low key. Simple bar-style decor inside and an outdoor patio.
But the food and service were both outstanding.
I opted for the Springbok burger with swiss cheese and bacon. Medium.
It was spot-on!
Wonderful bun, fresh produce, perfectly cooked burger, just the right amount of cheese and fantastic bacon.
The steak fries were just they way they're supposed to be and even the salad dressing (some kind of lemon-mustard concoction) was also delicious.
Add to that friendly and fast service and you have a real winner!
It was WELL worth the 20 minutes drive to Van Nuys : )
I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. Had passed by it a couple time, then found out they offer a KCRW discount. Woo hoo!
They are a casual restaurant/bar. Seems like a nice place to hang out in the valley. But what I went for was dinner. South African cuisine anyone??
I had the apricot glazed chicken shish kabob. It was served with rice, salad, and cole slaw. The kabob also had onions and bell pepper. The apricot dressing was very pleasant, it was sweet with a little bit of spice. Went really well with the sides. The chicken was cooked just right, still juicy and big chunky pieces. The sides were surprisingly high quality. The greens were fresh and served with a nice lemony dressing. Cole slaw here is really good. I think its because its on the sweet side and the cabbage is fresh.
The other dish we ordered was the tri meat one. It had a filet mignon, lamb, and sausage. These were served in a more traditional grilled way, but cooked to order. These people know how to grill. It was served with french fries, cole slaw, and salad. The fries were huge steak fries.
Next time I want to try the chicken peri peri. I hear its great with mashed potatoes.
Beer selection was decent. Nothing special(had a Widmer)--I also hear they have a selection of S. African wines.
Service was pretty quick and chill at the same time. Our food & drinks came at a decent pace while the waitress was laid back. Actually-its just a laid back kind of place. They also had some live music start after we arrived. It was okay, made it harder to have dinner conversation. There were also TV screens everywhere, they also made dinner conversation harder.
Prices are decent--$55 for two with tip & discount.
This place seems like a neighborhood bar. There were quite a few people sitting around the bar area just drinking and hanging out. One of the rooms was closed out for a private lunch.
They ran out of the one thing i really wanted...but i did get buffalo wings and they were decent. We came to watch a UCLA game so it sufficed. 2.5 stars.
Great place to watch a game, eat some wings, and drink beer. If you want to try some unique wings they have lemon and garlic wings that are awesome.
So, my experience went a little something like this:
Saturday night a few weeks ago I get an invite to my girl's birthday party she is having at Springbok. Never been here before. Cool! A new bar! I'm always down for new bars. So my friend, Tami and I hop in the car to meet everyone we knew from high school to this place we've never been to. We drive up to find that there is NO parking. None. You cant park on the street because its permit parking for residents of the neighborhood. The hood is a bit sketchy being that its like Van Nuys, so we end up waiting for a spot to open up in the lot across the street. Fine. So we park and start to walk up to the place. There are two guys in I'm guessing their 50's smoking outside. The proceed to make some sort of "expected" comment about how we are beautiful young ladies. Save it, grandpa.
We walk through the door to which we are greeted by the voice of what sounded like James Earl Jones, "I.D's please." I turn around, mid stride. All I saw was the whites of his eyes.... I didnt have my glasses on and I cant see very well in the dark. I said, "oh my god, i'm sorry, i didn't see you." "that's a first," says the 400lb black dude dressed in black sitting in the dark corner. I swear they did this on purpose.
So I hand him my ID and he nods me on. We walk up to the bar and proceed to order our usual drinks. Vodka tonic and a Bud light in a bottle. I didnt even have a chance to get my order out without some hillbilly 40-something in a Denim tuxedo spillin out some cheeseball line of how beautiful i am.
By this time, i have had enough of this whole experience and I'm over it. But we haven't even seen the birthday girl yet. There wasn't a place to sit in the house... and thats when it happened. We caught a glimpse of the WORST cover band in history. Some woman pretending to be Mick Fucking Jagger, butchering the hell out of Rolling Stones classics. It was awesomely bad... it was so bad it past bad and went back to good again. And then it was bad again... oh it was horrible. I stayed maybe a half an hour past when the brithday girl actually showed up and boned out.
This place would be awesome if it was in Lake Hughes, or Fresno, or someplace else equally as disgusting, but its not. Its in Van Nuys. And so, for that, I give it a generous 2 stars.
Springbok is a decent place to go in the valley for some food and a beer. The food is actually way better than I expected, I had a Kobe burger that was actually cooked medium rare like I asked. The fries were really good too and my friend seemed to like his wings judging his silence as he stuffed his face. Seating is rough, and the main room where most of the seats are is always blaring music, too loud to really talk. Also there is other music playing in the bar area and TVs going at the same time. So it gets knocked for that. Otherwise not a bad spot, I mean where else are you going to go in van nuys?
I don't drink, so I can't speak for the bar.
Foods great, staff is great. It's a nice chill spot with good laid back ambiance. TVs everywhere so you can watch sports, it ***IS*** a rugby bar. They show the games live from wherever they are.
I go there regularly enough to know them all. I have yet to be disappointed by any food that I have ordered. Some nights you go there and there rugby, softball and kickball teams all just chilling and having a god time.
Good jazz band Monday nights, trivia night on Tues, Wed is Rock Band (Yes the video game!!!) Thurs and Sub is karaoke, Live band Fri and Sat.
Nice crowd during football season & by nice I mean the people.
I've been here a couple of times now, and both experiences were good.
While parking is admittedly a big ol' pain in the butt (their parking lot is VERY small and neighborhood parking is restricted for blocks), the food is good and any place that has cider on tap is okay by me. The Philly Cheesesteak is awesome (steak is better than chicken version, IMO) and the Chicken Peri Peri is also tasty. The menu is expansive, and as others have said, so is their beer selection.
Both times I've been there, the staff and general crowd population has been friendly and welcoming. I'll definitely go again.
This might be a good place to watch a rugby match on a Sunday. They have beer and chicken wings and biltong (South African beef jerky - though it's not quite as savory as the other biltong I've had), and they carry the Setanta sports network. On Friday nights, however, the Springbok seems to attract every 45-year-old mulleteer for miles around. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that a band called Electric Rodeo was playing Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd covers in the corner.
My dinner selection was the chicken peri-peri, which was good, but not as spicy as described. I sampled the buffalo wings, and they were passable, though I have had better. The waitress was friendly and helpful, and was pretty descriptive with her food explanations and recommendations.
I might come here again to watch soccer or rugby, or to grab a bite and a pint or two (beer selection: decent; scotch selection: not so much) during happy hour if I'm in the area, but I can do without their Friday night scene.
It seems I had a very different experience from the rest of youse guys. Of course, I went around 8 pm on a Sunday night and went with the specific purpose of having dinner. For those of you who say it is "bar food", we must have very different ideas of what bar food is. They have the usual burgers and wings but they also have some unique choices for the entrees.
I had the Guinness stew and not only was it a delight to my palate, the presentation was very nice. I wish I had taken a picture for you all to see. Now, I'm not talking a fancy restaurant style but far above what I would call bar food. It was presented in a large shallow bowl, surrounding a generous portion of creamy mashed potatoes. They then had a green onion decoratively sliced and standing at a rakish angle in the potatoes and super finely minced fresh parsley sprinkled about the rim of the bowl. It was wonderfully spiced with peri-peri sauce and nicely complemented with the Guinness I ordered. I HIGHLY recommend it.
My date had the rib eye and it was a beautifully tender piece of meat (I speak of the rib eye, not my date) cooked precisely how he ordered it. Fries came with the steak and they were crispy on the outside, fluffy-soft on the inside. The portions are huge and both of our dishes came with a salad with a unique, yummy dressing.
As we were getting ready to leave, they were setting up the Karaoke so we didn't have to endure that.
On a final note, if you order the bar food, you are going to get bar food. If you want to go for a yummy meal, then come early so you don't have to deal with the bands or the Karaoke. I will definitely be back!
I mostly love Springbok for its huge outside patio. Despite what some other uses may say about their drink prices, I've found them to be completely average. $5.00 for a drink doesn't really faze me at this point. It's once we start getting higher than that is when I get sad and concerned.
There are 3 beers on tap that I drink regularly, and on nights when I'm not feeling like beer, the Captain and Cokes are STRONG. I mean, 2 and I'm good, 3 and I'm TAKEN CARE OF.
The cover bands that play here are the worst I've ever had the displeasure of hearing. I mean, consistent trash. But it gives the place even more charm. I mean, let's see which cover band can do the most rocking cover of "Sweet Home Alabama", you know?
But the greatest thing about Springbok is the food. I mean, it's freakin' killer. They have escargot! While I'm not standing in line to try it, I love when that stuff exists! Their South African style Somosas are amazing, really spicy. My friends tell me that the hot wings are great too. I'm in love with their burgers and sandwiches. That burger is beautiful, and has helped me through many a hangover.
Their food ranges from 8.99 to 25.99 for a filet mignon, which I'm dying to try someday. Their babyback ribs are delicious too. All sandwiches come with their delicious fries and a side salad with a homemade tasty dressing. My favorites:
Springbok Beef Burger
Pulled Pork BBQ sandwich
Peri-Peri Chicken sandwich (spicy!)
Veggie Somosas
and my boyfriend loves the Cheese-Steak.
The wait-staff is really sweet and friendly. I like Stacy, Lindsay, and Sharon the best. ^_^
Rock the Bok!
South African food, rugby fans, live music, and international beers on tap: Springbok is dude heaven!
We went to see a friend's band play a few weekends ago. The place was hopping, but not packed. We sat in the restaurant area, near the stage. (Seems kinda weird that the loud live music is where you eat, and not in the bar, but whatever.) The band--the Undercovers--played three fun, rockin', spot-on sets of KROQ covers.
It was past dinner time when we went, so I just ordered a couple of appetizers for the table: mussels and garlic bread. Mmmm mmmm buttery goodness! Of course, I indulged in a couple of pints too. (Couldn't let the guys show me up, after all!)
Yes, it's true: a cool place in Van Nuys! Great food. Prompt, friendly service. Good music. And walking distance from my house (which I should remember in case I even have a hankering to get hammered and be able to roll home).
A buddy of mine referred me to Springbok the other day. I said "sure lets try it out". We came with some friends and hung out while watching a Lakers game. The friend that referred me was a little afraid that the place was going to be super crowded. It was slightly the opposite. We were able to get our table and decent service.
For the three of us we split the Makula sampler platter. This dish consisted of fried calamari rings, a dozen buffalo wings, springbok fries, samosas, and boerewors with train smash.
Since going to this place for the first time it was interesting to get the sampler. You know, trying a little bit of everything. The fries were good, they there fat fries that tasted like there was seasoning and cheese on them. The wings were ok, I wasnt too interested after my first one. The sauce seemed a little too strong for my palates and looked like the sauce was added after the chicken was already cooked. Calamari rings were good but nothing special. Now here are the two interesting items. Boerewors, these are sausages popular in south africa, they had a good texture to them while leaving a slight tinge of spice towards the end. These sausages were covered in their sauce called train smash which is boiled tomatoes spread over the sausage. Samosas, are also a popular snack in south aftrica. They look like over stuffed fried wontons or empanadas and i MEAN OVERSTUFFED. The stuffing included potatoes, onions, and minced meat. I personally didnt care too much about it. Maybe I needed some sauce to go with it?
Later during our stay a friend came by and ordered their Cape Flats fish and chips. The fish was really good!! Did not feel too heavy as a meal but the portions were huge!!
I like to read the history of a place especially if it has been around for some time. I understood that Springbok mainly geared for people who love rugby and soccer and also has a feel to a pub. With its mixed crows of age and cultures Springbok seems like a good place to chill.
In the whole scheme of things, this place is probably only a three star bar. But all things considered, if you live in this area, you know that Van Nuys is generally void of any great bars or restaurants. So I give this place three stars in comparison to all bars I've been to, but four stars compared to bars in the valley.
Now you have to keep in mind when going to this place and ordering food, that you're ordering BAR food. This isn't West Hollywood and you're not going to receive something that is unbelievably well presented and delicious. Just be glad they offer something to eat other than peanuts. I though the food was surprisingly good for bar food. We ordered a chicken salad and the portion was huge. I had no complaints about the salad whatsoever. The salad did take about 30-45 minutes to come out to us, but this is a bar so we weren't really expecting snappy service.
Good range of beers on tap and modestly priced pitchers. The bartenders are all really cool and the atmosphere is generally chill. They have a pool table, dart boards, and other various computerized games to keep you amused if your company is dull. The karaoke here is some of the worst I've heard in a while, so if you're feeling down in the dumps about yourself, this is a great place to go to build yourself back up.
I went here last night with a friend for drinks. It was good on the drinks but the crowd, well at least the 2 guys hounding us all night were lame. My friend and I went out to talk and grab a drink not get cornered.
Ok im bitter, I'll let it go.....
The band playing was great I really enjoyed this place. Good drinks, and after reading the reviews i will return to try the south african food they offer. =D
The best thing about this place is the huge selection of beer on tap. There are like 10 or so beers on tap alone.....not to mention the huge selection of bottle beer.
The food is alright. I had a really hard time trying to choose what I wanted to eat but nothing really caught my attention. I ended up ordering a grilled chicken sandwich and fries, and my friend ordered a burger. My sandwich was okay...I've had better. The burger I hear is pretty good. We waited forever for our meal to come. But the beer was great!
Food is pretty pricey for a bar though.
We went on a Thursday night, which was great because they had karaoke that night. The karaoke was great! Big screen TV, great sound system, and they played some great 80s videos.
My suggestion is go there during karaoke with a bunch of friends and drink lots of tap beer. Perhaps order an appetizer or two as for dinner you'll have a hard time choosing.
Springbok is a great place to go have drinks and bar food. They have a decent selection of bottled domestic / import, on tap, and a full bar. Now, as far as dinner fare its a hit or miss. I attended a birthday dinner for a friend a few days ago. More than half of the 8 that went weren't too happy with their meal. Most complained of the dryness of each sandwich and lack of flavor. I took a bite of the siphos chicken sandwich, the reuben special, and ate my sprinkbok burger. The two other sandwiches plus my burger were very dry. I had to slather my burger with some ketchup using my fries.
I would probably only come here to drink some beer, grab some appetizers, and enjoy the game on tv or the live music. They have 1 pool table near the bar area and a huge tv next to the stage and a flat panel on the opposite wall in the dinning area. The service was good and attentive but that didn't make up for the issues with the food.
Decent draft beer selection and interesting food. My girlfriend and I had the beef samosas, Oom Sarels Chicken Sosaties, and the Jan Van Riebeeck's boerewors roll. The beef samosas were almost all beef and tasty. The boerewors roll was basically a really tasty sausage in a roll and tasted like it was seasoned with cloves. Uniquely yummy! The apricot marindade for the chicken sosaties (basically chicken skewers) was great too. I liked the different spices they used on both dishes. Most entrees were around $9-$15. The The draft pints were $5.75. The portions were pretty big. I think almost all of our party had to take some food home.
Weird vibe, overpriced beer. Soufflee was fake and not what I expected.
Dunno, I'd go here for a Shirley Temple.
If you want to try the bold flavors of South African food come to the Springbok.
Don't let the "pub" look fool you it's cuisine is a yummy blend of native african, portuguese, dutch, malay, indian and english flavors.
Try anything "peri peri" for a spicy kick and the robust boerwurst sausage.
They also have a location in Long Beach.
Springbok is an Antelope, and is the mascot and name of the South African Rugby team.
I live nearby and naively thought for a very long time that it was a Korean BBQ place (the name, the foreign flags...like I said, naive). One day I ventured in with my wife and to my surprise found a warm (wood paneled!), friendly bar/grill restaurant with great drinks and really tasty food. What's great about the food is that it has a good amount South African influence, which, if I may be so bold as to assume, many Americans have little knowledge of.
Sick of the usual Chinese/Pizza/Cheesecake Factory blah food? Try something new... like their Somaties(sp?). Their are really yummy shishkabob like things with a spicy apricot glaze. So good. And their stew is awesome too.
Cool place. Cool owners. Cool Staff. Mean drinks. Heavy pours. Lots of south African beer. they even had the legendary tusker from Africa. I don't recall which country. Kenya I think.
these guys usually BBQ or grill on major sporting events, or just because it's the weekend. had some tacos there. pretty good. pretty pretty good.
the south African fare is good as well. I had some sausage sandwich that was very tasty and came with a tasty sauce.
Bartenders and waitstaff are very cute. always a plus in my book.
Found myself in Springbok for the first time last night and wasn't quite blown away but didn't feel the need to walk out after one drink either. The bar reminded me more of a lodge that belongs anywhere other than southern california - which is a plus in my book. Huge patio that i'll be checking out quite a bit this summer, pool table and a pretty good selection of tap beers ($5-6/pint).
We showed up after the kitchen closed at 11p.m. so i can't speak for the food yet but it seemed like a place that would have an interesting menu. There was a guy playing an acoustic guitar and rocking out pretty much by himself on a stage in a back room.
I'd normally give it about 3 stars but seeing as it's in Van Nuys and walking distance to my house i'll give it an extra one. Looking forward to checking out tuesday night trivia.
This is a great spot... sort of an upscale neighborhood bar, that happens to have some pretty good food as well. The menu is South African, which if you have never experienced it, means it is very heavy and centered around beef. The boerwors beef sausage is a must.
Bar prices are a little high for Van Nuys, but the atmosphere and food make it worth while. The waitress staff is outstanding.
So, I've hit this spot a couple weeks in a row now, on Wed nights, after my softball game. I just wanted to relax with a brew, and maybe get a bite to eat. I did both, while watching the baseball playoffs on the many TVs. I sat at the bar both times, and had pretty good service from the bartender, who I overheard tell someone that she has been there six years now. They have a "beer of the day" special, which I think is cool, you can try a new beer on the cheap. The food is good, big portions, I had the fish n chips one night, and a BLT the other night. Fish n chips rocked, the BLT was nothing special, but, what can you expect from a BLT anyway? They DO have good fries. They have a hot sauce called "peri-peri" sauce (I think)... it's a garlic hot sauce.. aww yeah, good stuff! Basically, Springbok is a chill spot to grab a meal and a brew.. I left both times by 11pm, so I don't know what the late night crowd is like, but the people who were hanging there when I was seemed cool. They only serve food until 10pm, I wish they servered it later. See ya there on Wed.
There are two of them. One in Van Nuys and the other in Long Beach. I'll write about the one in Van Nuys, because it's right down the street from me - and I used to go there before I got permanently 86'd. Don't ask, as it's over something stupid. But because I can't go there, doesn't mean you can't enjoy quality South African cuisine for yourself.
Hmmm, let's see... the food is good. A bit pricey, but good nonetheless. They have a pool table and a couple of dart boards. There is a terrace where you can smoke and have your lunch / dinner. They used to do group events like go to boxing matches and host golf tournaments at the 9 hold executive course, but because I haven't been there in over 2 years, I'm not sure if they still do it.
In my opinion, it's a great place to go on a Friday / Saturday night if you don't have anything to do. You can have dinner and party with the locals. I'd say that most of the locals there are nice and approachable. There are some dirty old men that will try and buy you a shot, but turn them down like any normal human would do. Service is good, and the servers / bartenders are cute... that is except Rocky. He's a dude. Nice guy.
So there you have it. All in all, it's a cool place to go to party and eat dinner. I recommend going there to catch your favorite football / baseball / rugby / soccer game. They've got flat screens pretty much every square inch in the bar area.
Cheers!

I moved to Lake Balboa a little over a year ago and didn't stumble upon Springbok until earlier this year. But I'm glad I did. First off, the food is UNREAL. Amazing steaks, Ahi Tuna Steak that will melt in your mouth, great App's, etc.
Wait staff is cute, friendly and on point. Great beer selection too. The crowd is great, always a solid people watching journey. There is no set group of people that hang here which is why it's great. Nobody cares who you are in this place which makes it #1 on my list.
After shooting some balls at the nearby Van Nuys Golf Course, I was in need of a beer to remedy my throbbing back. Apparently my posture while golfing is still very much subpar. With the Springbok literally right next door, we decided to go get a few beers and grab some lunch there.
We spent about two and a half hours here, sitting outside on the patio, sheltered by an umbrella from the menacing sun. Amazingly, it was actually quite comfortable sitting outside. The breeze cooled things down and, perhaps thanks to the lush green jasmine climbing all over the fence, it was actually pleasant sitting outside.
I ordered the Bok Lager and my wife had a Hefeweizen. Well, actually we ended up ordering several rounds, but this was, after all, over a 2.5 hour stretch. We started off with the Buffalo wings appetizer, a great value at $6.95 for 12 home-made hot chicken wings. No siree bob, these weren't Costco manufactured hot wings. You could taste the sauce was most definitely homemade and the wings were very tasty and had a serious kick to them. Sadly, our waitress Sharon was the only waitress there and service took a while, so our wings weren't really "hot" (in terms of temperature.)
As for our main course, I got the bunny chow, which sounds way nasty, I know, but it's actually a South African curry in a bread bowl. It was delicious, if it completely sidetracked my idea of curry. Certainly there was curry powder in this "curry", but it was more of a beef stew with onions, carrots, and potatoes, and curry. It was very good, actually, and the bread used to make the bowl was fabulous. Although I left probably half my plate intact, it was a very tasty dish!
My wife had the turkey sandwich with avocado. I tasted a bite of it and it was really a great sandwich. Again, the bread, which I don't quite know where they get or if it's homemade, was very good.
Altogether we had a very pleasant dining experience here at the Springbok. If you're in the area, I would highly recommend checking them out!
First off, this is a South African bar, not a British one.
As a tea totaler, I cannot vouch for the alcohol, but the food is amazing. Specifically, the hot wings (hot, crispy, liberally doused in sauce), the chicken liver (if you think you hate liver, you just haven't tried this), and their house salad dressing (tangy and mustardy and amazing).
The serve can be slower if they're packed, but only because the waitresses have to run around so much.
The iced tea is perfect (and they even have raw sugar in their sugar selection). They are fast to refill (I drink a lot of iced tea, so this is important to me).
If you go during a major sporting event, expect to wait for a table, and for the volume on the tvs to be loud.
A very likeable ambience for a bar/restaurant, but it doesn't strike me as particularly special there. Where Springbok shines is a colorful menu of South African foods, with a lot of familiar Indian cuisine if you feel reluctant.
I didn't get a chance to see a live band there, but it seems like it'd really be amazing, given that the atmosphere is so cozy and you can throw yourself on the stage within feet of your dining table!
FIrst of all. I challenge anyone to provide Better chicken wings! I am looking....I have gone around place to place but keep coming back to SpringBok. The burgers are good but everything else is allright. WIngs are cheap but the rest is a little pricy. I love the bar go there all the time but now is when I become drama queen.
Dont Get NewCastle on Tap! for some reason it tastes horrible there. Do not go on Karoake nights, Yeah it is fun. Go somewhere else. The crazy ButtRocker that runs the karaoke is obviously Tone Deaf and he blasts the High end and makes the music Virtualy Unlistenable. My ears bleed Everytime. They supposedly have live music but I see the same band every week. Annoying!! The juke box Sucks! No Journey? No Billy Ocean?? Yet they supply Barbie Girl!?? I know I can download them but WTF?? The Chicken Wings save the place!! o' and thier hot waitresses.
Very interesting little sports bar. Since it's a South African pub it's a slightly different take and feel than an American bar or British pub. The space is very relaxed and cool; I love the pictures of South Africa everywhere. The boys who run it are (mostly) very friendly. Rocky, the bartender, is a doll.
The crowds there vary greatly depending on when ya go. Happy hour is usually an older crowd sitting at the bar watching sports and chatting. The night crowd is younger and mostly locals. Then there is the rugby crowd, which can get pretty rowdy and loud (frankly they're my favorite). Plus the karaoke crowd.
The live band on Fridays is good, they do a lot of 80's covers, and the lead singer is friendly. Though I always feel bad because no one is ever there for them and they usually just become background music.
Overall the food is good, the patio is fantastic and the staff is friendly. I'm always more then happy to grab a drink and chill there, especially if there's a rugby game on.
Okay for drinking beer and watching a soccer match...the food is typical greasy or fatty bar food. Yes, of course onion rings taste amazing after you finished 2 pitchers of Stella! The place turns into a nightclub of sorts on the weekend (not sure about the weekdays) and its mostly valley thugs...wouldnt bring my kids and wouldnt bring a girl here on a date...unless shes a biker chick.
