The entrance to this no-frills basement drawing studio is simply a stairwell that opens onto Spring Street. If you're not careful, you'll miss it. Once you make your descent, you find yourself in a small room crammed with 15-20 highly intense artists. There is no music. Any talking is met with a "shush!" There are very few easels for you to work from- most people are drawing on flattop desks or balancing their pad on the back of a chair. Did I mention it's cramped? And since everyone is piled on top of each other, you can't help but to look at the drawings around you and feel completely inadequate since most of the people here are SERIOUS artists.
So why come here? Ummm, let's see:
1. The collective artistic spirit of the studio invigorates those in attendance and inspires them to produce great works of art.
2. It's the cheapest studio time in the city.
3. Lots of naked, naked boobies.
What? At least I'm not the guy who goes up to the model at the end of the studio time and shows her his drawing while sheepishly toeing the ground (I really did witness that, and man, I was embarassed for all of us. To his credit, he did wait until she had put her robe on.)

Pop in anytime, pay per class: This is my kind of studio. I have been here about five times for figure drawing and I love the vibe. I don't draw a lot but I'd say I'm artistic and creative...the studio attracts everyone from professional drawers to people like me. Is good!
It feels like the studio has been there forever (in a good, New York institution kind of way) and they use fun-to-draw models. Well, there was one model with the unsightly rash, but...otherwise, great!
