I had lunch here yesterday 11/03/09 and it is good.  This was my 3rd time there and I am definitely going to keep it on my regular rotation.  Their Hot Links are awesome, the pork is to die for and the burnt ends are something else.  Not to mention that they have great craft beers on tap.  Dale's Pale Ale, Racer 5 IPA, Stone's Arrogant Bastard, just to name a few.  The sweet mashed potatoes and french fries are really good with about anything they serve.

It will be there for us when we need some good old fashioned comfort food and a good beer.

This is a comfy bbq joint in a very unlikely location -- near Chinatown near Olvera Street. The servers are very friendly and the food is good. Do not miss the brisket, it's the best thing on their menu. Also, the rib meat falls right off the bone. Chicken and tri-tip are just OK.

They also have a good selection of beers and a couple flat panel TVs for catching sports games.

Ehhhhh......HELL NAW!!!! Don't eat here. Anybody who thinks this food tastes good, great, or delicious are most likely people who really and truly don't know how to cook very well and think anything tastes great because they don't know what it is they're supposed to look for in a dish.

I managed to get there today after throwing a woman the bird and shouting F YOU!!! After she wanted me to run over an elderly gentleman walking s--l--o--w--l--y across the street. Parking is the absolute pits and nothing about the food made me say I'd happily put up with the surrounding area to go there again and again for a culinary piece of heaven.

I've been craving burnt ends ever since I had them at RUB in Vegas inside the RIO hotel. Got those and a small arsenal of sides along with the bread pudding. The bread pudding was the only thing I didn't spit out and even though it's a nice second...I've yet to taste a bread pudding as delicious as the one at McCormick and Schmidt's.

Anywho, all I can liken Spring Street's palate to as craving some banana pudding and finding that someone put a whole tablespoon of cardamom in the pudding in an effort to appear different. The greens tasted like sh*t. The mac n cheese was a bit gritty and had a funny taste, the baked beans were too sweet and had a funny taste as well, the burnt ends were not at all like RUB's and the sauce was just something I just did not enjoy AT ALL!!

I take this seriously because I'm searching for 2-3 places to cater my family reunion, and after scouring all over SoCal for the perfect setting that allows outside food in...I was very much looking forward to having Spring Street be it. I was willing to fork over the $4000 it would've taken to feed my peeps and make them satisfied and happy. But if I would've served this slop without tasting it first and just going by these reviews....I know I wouldn't have made it out the door alive.

Next week, I'm on to Bludso's and all I can say is I truly hope this guy knows what he's doing. From the pics, his food looks on point, no sauce masking and hiding anything. Only thing I didn't care for was the pic of the Red Velvet cake. It looked a little too dry and crumbly. If you want bomb a*s desserts that have you at first bite, go to Miss Peaches in NoHo. Get everything.....just like I did today. (Will go back to try the dishes.) Miss Peaches has a taste that says Made Because of LOVE. Man, everything was so good and moist and perfectly spiced, I hated sharing.  It had a superb, ultra homey, comforting taste I didn't find at a certain bakery I spent $400 in.  Go there. You won't be disappointed.

Got the chicken, ribs, hot link, and brisket sampler. I always order my bbq with no sauce. The brisket was really good. Moist and with plenty of seasoning - really tasty and not bland. The ribs looked great, but were bland. The chicken was bland. The hot link was nothing special. My guess is the tri-tip is good - especially if it is cooked and seasoned like the brisket. I got a baby back rib too - nothing special. I got the beans for a side - really good - tasted like bush's beans. One thing great about this place is that the food was served to me hot - everything - really hot. The bbq sauce was hot too - temperature hot - not spicy - I don't like hot bbq sauce, but their sauce compliments the meats - especially the brisket - really good. The bbq sauce has cinnamon or something in it - different.

Nice, small place. Really odd for Chinatown - this place does not seem to fit in the area at all. They have several funky beers on tap. The staff is really nice and they serve you quickly.

They have happy hour specials - 3-6 - had sandwiches for $5 - seemed like a good deal.

Prices here are average - not too expensive. I dropped $25 with tax and tip.

I really love bbq - I would come back for the brisket.

The bbq sauce here is good, vinegar based.  Meats/ribs are good.  If you don't want to spend alot, order Fire Cooked Veges and Rice/Beans, both for $4 and u will be stuffed.  Add a hot link for $3.50.  I go there for the Angel City Stout 10%....good and strong.

I love this place, one of my favorite barbecue spots in the world. I try to go here every time I am in court, it is right down the street.

The spot is very chill, very fun and friendly...now lets get to the food.

Every table has a loaf of white bread, perfect for all the and sopping up the delicious bbq sauce (I get it spicy).  I LOVE the burnt ends, they are delicious. A pound of them will more than feed a big guy, give you a nice treat for later.  The fries are out of this damn world. Spectacular.  Seriously, spectacular.

I have also had their Best Beef Sandwich, which was also absolutely delicious.

From what I have heard, the beer selection is great (don't really drink) and they have a great happy hour. Go there, eat, drink and be merry.

Are you a f@ckin eater? Do you want to be a f@ckin eater?

Quote Dana White.

Look I came here a few weekends ago and man, this is a real man's man kind of place. It's not the best bbq I've ever had but it's one of the better bbq's I've had in LA.

It's an unassuming place with takeout style menus, paper table cloth, paper towels and moist towelettes at the table and some darn good American style bbq.

It's a lot of food that will leave you at the point of falling asleep, puking, and euphoric. I had a sampler and it was more than enough for 2 people. Oh yea they have wonderbread right at the table to munch on! Brilliant!

Tucked away on a busy corner at the outskirts of Chinatown, this place is pretty cool for watching a game and throwing back a beer or two with some homies.  Next time, I am definitely coming for happy hour; I'm dying to try their Banana Bread Ale!

As for the food itself, I really enjoyed the Pork Spare Ribs - nice and tender.  But the sauce was a little overwhelming, a bit too sweet for my taste.  The brisket was thinly sliced but swimming in sauce and a little on the salty side.  Cole slaw was good but the jalapeno corn bread is a bit dry.  The mac n' cheese needed more of a kick--maybe some more cheese.

Roadhouse style bbq joint that serves large meaty ribs and meats. Bold tangy sauce, heavy on the vinegar. The loaf of white bread on the tables is a nice touch.

Spring St. has a good bar with excellent micro brews on tap (Stone Levitation, Green Trolly).

I love this place! I go here every chance i get. The food is amazing and the staff is always helpful and really polite.

My husband goes for the ribs and beef here (his favorite is the Best Beef Sandwich) which he says is AMAZING! My favorite things here are the Mac N Cheese and the Hush Puppies. Without fail everytime i go here i will order that. I also make it a point to try a different pint of beer everytime i'm here too.

Try this place out when you get a chance, you won't be sorry!

I  (heart) Spring Street BBQ. I've tried a lot of bbq places in LA, but nothing makes me warm and fuzzy inside like Spring Street does.

I always get the beef ribs and brisket. They're the best. 4 ribs for $10 that are juicy, delicious and topped with a bbq sauce that's just right; too good to be true in LA.

I wish they would improve their sides. I've tried a few but havent been really impressed. But then, who am I kidding, I dont come here for the sides, I come here for the BBQ which sends me to a happy place every time.

Go, try it out, you wont be disappointed. Did I mention that they have a great beer selection too and the waitresses are cute and friendly.

I love BBQ, but it's so hard to find good BBQ. :(  I had the 4 rib basket which was good.  It's plenty of meat and the sauce was good.

My sides were coleslaw and mac n' cheese.  I didn't like either. I didn't finish either.  I was pretty disappointed because I'm a "side" type of girl.

The service here is incredibly friendly.  Parking on the weekend was pretty easy.

It was like a dream. The sweet smell wafted down the street almost guiding us first timers in.. and once we got there we were greeted by some very nice ladies ready to take our order on the double, and a loaf of bread. All I could think was 'I love this place already'! Seriously.. They give your table an ENTIRE loaf of bread to sop up all the liquid goodness from your plate. These are my kinda people :) Not that we had any sort of room after getting a load of the rib baskets we'd ordered, but it was a nice thought.

The food is legit, but what an odd spot for a bbq joint.. in Chinatown of all places. And the parking is a little tight too. Don't let that stop you though, cuz like I said, the Q is yum-o!

Dear god, the 4-rib basket destroyed me on Saturday night. I don't know what I was thinking but I guess I thought I could handle it even though I had just finished lunch maybe 4 hours before hand.

The ribs were tender but I think something happened to the sides. I don't remember the cole slaw being just a cabbage salad with vinegar. I didn't like the mac and cheese at all. There was an odd peanut taste to it.

This time around, I got the sauce on the ribs. The sauce was pretty thick.  I haven't decided if I like the sauce on the side or not but for cleaner fingers, I suggest sauce on the side.

But I still dig that I can get BBQ in Chinatown and the folks are super nice. It was a nice meal before we headed out to Cirque Berserk. And since we parked in front of the restaurant, it was a good walk to work off those ribs!

I like to think of myself as a barbeque conisseur, and this place rocks my socks!  Great for the days that I crave barbeque during my lunch break.  Love their hush puppies, red beans and rice and grilled veggies.  I've had the pulled chicken, pulled pork and tri-tip sandwich, all three are excellent.  Their sauce is great, more spicy than sweet, just the way I like it.  They brew their own beer and they have a great selection.  Their bread pudding is just okay.

I can't wait to get a lunchtime craving and make my way to Chinatown for the best BBQ in Downtown LA.

Even though I live quite close to Chinatown, I don't frequent the restaurants there that often, much less the non-Chinese or non-Vietnamese restaurants. So, the only reason I actually decided to order take-out from this place was because it caught my eye the night before, and I kind of craved barbque goodness.

I ordered the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich with french frieds on the side.  The pork in the sandwich was a bit dry, but at least the bbq sauce was good - nice and zesty.  They put cole slaw in the sandwich too, but it didn't taste impressive at all.  The fries on the side were well-seasoned but very soggy. I hate soggy fries - not as much as I hate melted ice cream, but still.

The total damage came out to $10.87 after tax, so at least the prices aren't that bad. I think the lady behind the counter gave me a dirty look when I gave her $11 in cash, though.  WTF - you know, I am getting sick and tired of those places which expect tip for TAKE OUT orders. I PAY for my damn food - that's it. I'm not getting any service or anything so why the hell should you expect gratuity. Next time (if there is a next time), I'm going to ask them what the hell they're looking at.

WHOLLY SMOKES. Yum.

This place is right past Spring and Cesar Chavez. Left the joint just 30 minutes ago and am REEKING of beef BBQ ribs. A basket of 3 ribs with baked beans (or coleslaw/fries) is $9.95 - but the satisfaction is priceless.

The ambiance is great, and the decor stays true to the backyard BBQ theme. There's chalk paint everywhere, so there's random specials drawn all over the walls. Dodger lovers can ooo and ahh over the obscene amount of paraphernalia nailed onto the walls, and can watch live games during their lunch hour. The waitresses are very sweet and very attentive, and they've got a great selection of food and drinks to choose from.

It's awfully weird seeing this place in Chinatown, but who cares, everyone needs a break from fried rice every now and then.

LOVED it. Mostly because BBQ is one of few food genres that the BFF and I can agree on.

If you like real BBQ smoked this is the place. Its kind of small but that's ok with me. There is almost always street parking but if not its like $4 to park in a lot. Not bad.

A sugar rush from the "spicy" sauce on the pulled chicken.  They doubtless pulled the chicken from the squad of chickens that were--before their gooses, as it were, were cooked--linebackers or lacrosse players.  For the dullards reading this, that means TOUGH.

There is a nice selection of beers, the servers are pleasant, and they favor the Lakers--but one will not go back, oh no, oh no.

First, people need to know that there are different schools of BBQ - it's not all  like Tony Roma's. It's not all about sweet sticky thick sauces either.  While living in North Carolina and Florida I developed a bit of passion for 'southern' bbq.  Of the southern BBQ's I would say there are really two main variants.  The vinegar based (um, I would call these 'native') bbq sauces are really my favorite. You walk into one of these joints in the Carolinas and you basically get: pulled pork, no sauce ON it, hush puppies, and some greens.  The sauce is usually served separately and is a vinegar and pepper sauce.  All those vinegar pepper sauces (tabasco, tappeys, petes, etc) I think are just derivatives of the typical southern bbq sauce- the vinegar blast when you pour it on should make your nose flare!  I have yet to find a proper 'southern bbq' in this style anywhere on the west coast (but still looking). I tried about 10 of these during my last visit to Carolina just to get my fill, since the style just hasn't caught on elsewhere.

The other school is the hot, sweet, but NOT thick, sauces. Again, most commonly served on the side. If you have ever ate a "red, hot,n, blue" bbq chain, this what I am talking about. I would call this more "Georgia" than "Carolina" , but it's all a blend.  This style is more what you are getting Spring St. Smokehouse.  If you are thinking that you will get some "Cattlemen's" or "Heinz" or "Jack Daniels" - (the stuff from the grocery shelves) this isn't it. It's runny-ish, different and excellent.  The spicy sauce at Spring Street Smokehouse was excellent, spicy, although a touch sweet.  It did have some kick though.  (sorry, I don't do mild)

The pulled pork was excellent, as was the hush puppies (onions and some jalapenos I think). The cornbread was also very good (with corn and onions inside).  The Sweet Tea was excellent. All of this was spot on too- would I would expect from this style of cooking in the Carolinas.  Unfortunately we also had spare-ribs, and although they had a nice smoky flavor, and were HUGE, I think the cooking time needs to be increased or method changed because they were so tough as to be almost inedible. I recommend this place but stick with the pulled selections.

The other sides I tried (baked beans, coleslaw) was average. I have to mention that the coleslaw style is a very common southern prep - again vinegar being the star (vinegar + black pepper).  Perhaps not for everyone, but pretty true to that style of preparation.

The staff was great, very friendly and homey.  We'll be back! (minus spare ribs).

Stop #3 of our DTLA crawl.

This is actually right on the edge of Chinatown, a mere 50 feet from Caesar Chavez.  Yes, the man, not the street.

Walking in, as one other person put it, is a biker bar meets sports bar.  The overall decor makes you think bikers come here (which there were a couple of bikers who did), but then on one side, you've got a full bar with 2 flat panel TVs showing college basketball.  What was cool was that the support pillars in the restaurant were in fact chalk boards and there was stuff written.

We shared ribs, brisket, and sides of collard greens, mac n cheese (gotta compare and contrast), bbq baked beans, and potato salad.

The ribs were ok.  They weren't as tender as at Showbiz, but they were flavorful and cooked well.  The sides were nothing to rave about, though the beans were pretty good.

I knocked a star for the brisket.  Now... brisket is usually sliced thin, so you can see the nice smoke ring on it.  But what came out was not even close.  What came out looked more like BBQ PULLED beef.  What the hell?  It was tough and not appetizing.  I did finish the couple spoonfuls I took, but I was pretty disappointed by it.

The service was nice.  Our server was very attentive and got us everything we needed, including wetnaps!!!!  You gotta have wetnaps when you're eating 'que.

Showbiz is still better and cheaper than this place.

The final stop of our Downtown LA BBQ crawl and those of us BBQ soldiers were still ready and willing to eat some more BBQ.

The inside has a borderline sports bar feel to it. With a couple TVs hanging from the walls and a nice size bar with a bunch of beers on tap. There was a huge chalk board behind the bar listing the local micro brews they had on tap, (which they also offered beer flights to try them all out) along with other tasty imported beers in a bottle.

The BBQ menu didn't offer Baby Back ribs but does have quite an assortment of meat choices including pork spareribs, tri-tip, and smoked chicken. You also get the choice of sauces for your BBQ either mild or spicy. Go with the Spicy. It's not that spicy and has a nice balance of heat and sweet.

My BBQ team went with a full slab of Pork Spare Ribs with beans. The restaurant claims to smoke their ribs for 4 hours and then grill them off before serving. I actually liked the grilled char left on the ribs. Grilled just before being burnt and ultimately nicely cooked. The beans were an uber traditional baked bean style. Thick, rich, and barbequey. That's right. I said barbequey. So +1 on the beans.

The only thing I didn't care for was the pulled beef brisket. It was dry and crusty. Two things any bar-b-q shouldn't be described as. I prefer my brisket thinly sliced but to each their own.

I would come here again, maybe next time, not after already hitting up two other BBQ joints before.

The comedy show there is awesome.  Go there on a Friday night to drink and watch a great comedy show.

The meat is ok.  It's to salty for me and I wasn't a big fan of the sauce.  Plus they have bags of bread on the table for your meat.  Look, if I want bread with my meat I'll ask for it.  Don't try and shove you're loaf in my face.  That's just rude.

Go for the beer, stay for the comedy, but get a pickled egg instead of the pulled pork.

If you ever find yourself in Chinatown and craving good BBQ, then head over to Spring Street Smoke House. I've seen this restaurant for several years now, while eating across the street at Asian Noodle, but the place just never appealed to me from the outside to want to step in. That was a mistake because when you step inside, its a really nice place. The ambiance is best described as biker bar meets sports bar. It has an industrial chic decor to it.

I really liked how they have a loaf of white bread placed on each table, but alas its not Wonder Bread. shame on them for this faux pas. I have to admire that this place resisted serving baby back ribs and sticks to more a traditional Texas BBQ menu.

The place can comfortably seat a group of 6, but we were able to add another table because there were about 8 Yelpers that congregated here as part of the downtown BBQ Crawl UYE that Shauna had put together that day.

The service is very friendly. The waitress was very attentive to the drinks that people ordered, including those of us that just ordered water. My group ordered the pork ribs (see the menu pics I took for pricing) with the sauces (mild and spicy)  kept separate. The  pork ribs are of good quality and had a nice smoky flavor. It looks like its served burnt because it looks blackened, but there isn't a burnt taste to it. And the meat is tender, but not too tender so it still clings to the bone. Its also not dry, which is very important to me in terms of texture. Its not the best quality of pork ribs meat that I have had, but its good and satisfying.

The mild BBQ sauce is extremely mind. You can't even taste any spice in it. The group agreed that the spicy version was much better.  I am not a drinker, but the place offers a decent variety of beers. It seemed the please the drinkers in my group.

The side dishes are a mixed bag. The collard greens aren't overcooked, but they taste bland. I didn't see any ham hocks or bacon bits in them. The mac and  cheese has a lot of black pepper, but not in an overpowering way. Its decent mac n cheese. The potato salad is okay.

The price per person for our group order was about $17 each, which is a little on the pricey side.  Beers cost $6 and up.

I'd give this place 3 stars on the food alone, but the service and ambiance deserves an additional star. I can see why other Yelpers like hanging out at this place.

There is only metered parking or a paid lot across the street for $5.

Smoking BBQ in downtown LA!!!

Cold Monday night, streets of downtown are desolate, and you are on a mission to find good BBQ. Like a modern western, you open up the double glass doors to this place on the corner of Spring and Cesar Chavez, to be greeted by a wave of warm, sweetly scented, smokey-bbq filled air that reminds you of a down-home cookout. Immediately, your mouth starts watering. Your eyes meet those of other weary downtown warriors looking for the succulent taste of lean smoked tri-tip ($9.50), or pulled beef brisket ($8.50, and $2 for 2 sides of your choice).

With your jeans and boots on, you saunter up to the bar or seat yourself at a cosy corner table with some ornery compadres. Sit back, relax, order any number of beers on tap, and enjoy swapping stories with fellow travelers, or enjoy the modern-day battle of Monday-night-football on a flat screens.

Find a muchacho who likes to share food so you can taste a bunch of different things for your first time. First times are always better with company. Corn bread, mac&cheese, collard greens, red beans and rice, and Bread Pudding are a few scrumptious recommendations.

A good sense of direction is a must due to the one-way streets. Parking can be found in a $3 lot or meters on the street, but don't bring your horse without it's own hay and scooper.

I'm a fan of BBQ and I love to BBQ when I have time. In fact, during my undergrad I used to come home from a night a drinking and fire up the grill. So, I want to like this place, I really do. But I can't say I'd recommend it.

The meat's okay but there's something generic about it and it whispers mediocrity. The sauce is just not for me. I realize it's a more regional thing  (Alabama, I believe) so it's tangy and watery instead of what I'm used to, slightly sweet and syrupy. Either that or a good old dry rub.

However, the beer selection is quite vast and although I haven't had the chance to break company policy and drink while on the clock, I know some of the brews to be quite good.

On our way to Philipe's and instead end up here. Pleasant surprise the BBQ was good the meat and the sauce are the star of the show. The sides are good but not the best. Owned by young guys, craft beer on tap and bottles. Definitely going back.

I think this may actually be the best bbq in LA.

Wow.  Took me long enough to find it!  The sauce is the perfect sweet/savory/spicy blend, and I can't get enough.  I think the first time I went I remember them having baby backs (sometime last year), but recently went and they didn't have those on the menu.  I also remember the spare ribs being better than the babys, but I think they were smaller back then too... now they're huge whopping pieces of meat, and still excellent.  Also had the pulled pork and the four-beer sampler (a great value of microbrews).  The service could've been better (they brought one of the wrong beers, forgot a side dish, and kept us waiting forever to order, but it's excusable given how busy it was).  Will go back for sure.

Oh - also, kind of hard to find - 640 north spring street... i went first to Spring at the intersection of 6th street.  Nope... there's an actual "North Spring" Street which doesn't directly connect with Spring.  GPS needed, or Google map this place before you go.  Or call and they'll give you directions.

The pictures and website made everything look so good, but we were sadly disappointed.

The restaurant itself was very nice for being in such a dumpy area.
Walking in, you're greeted by fry baskets as condiment holders and bags of white bread sitting on the table.

I came here w/ 5 of my cousin and all ordered different things.
Smoked chicken- Can't go wrong w/ chicken
Baby back ribs- dry
Spare ribs- dry
Tri-tip- not bad, but had better
BBQ Brisket- Good, moist.
BBQ pasta- VERY VERY BAD IDEA. It's basically what it says it is. Pasta drenched in BBQ sauce.

Their BBQ sauce (regular and spicy) is also something else we didn't really enjoy. It was thin and tasted like it had too much vinegar in it.

With each entree you can add 2 sides. Out of all the sides, only the fries and fire grilled veggies were good.
Coleslaw- bland and too raw
Mac n Cheese- Easy mac gone wrong
Chili- Not bad, but it had that vinegar taste to it too.
Hush Puppies- dry in the middle

2 stars for a good try. . .

Good BBQ, good Beer, good vibe, good place.

The BBQ is often very good, but can occasionally be hit-or-miss. Usually the meat is done up just right - juciy, succulent, moist, soft, just-this-side-of-not-falling-off-the-bone. I've been there a few times where it hasn't quite been like that, but on the whole the meats are cooked well. Their sauces are quite good; just don't go in expecting a thick sauce. It's of a relatively watery consistency and seems vinegar based, but provided you're into that, it's really quite good.

Good selection of beers on tap, including Angel City's lineup and often Arrogant Bastard from Stone Brewing Company.

Great down-home feel to the restaurant, and friendly waitresses. A very good BBQ joint for downtown LA (and the only one that I frequent in the area).

Ok. Note to self: Come back for happy hour.

If you're a beer fan, this is definitely your spot.  This smoke house offers a long list of beers that made me sad I had to drive immediately after I ate.

The waitress that attended my friend and I was extremely friendly...Actually  the whole vibe of the place was pleasant.  I ordered some chilli and could not stop eating it from the minute it came out.  Even though my tummy was begging for mercy, that had to be the best damn chilli I've had yet.  It was inexpensive, but the quality was great.  I will defintiely find myself here again!

Somehow i randomly found this place on my way to olivera street. The menus outside sealed the deal. We ordered the sampler platter. It was amazing. Some of the best BBQ i have had. The meat had a great smokey flavor. The sauce was the boss. The links cooked to perfection.  But the best part of the meal was the peach cobbler! OMG! I know good peach cobbler we i taste it and this was the BEST! The full bar and huge beer selection also helps. Try this place for sure!

Had 1/3 pound of tri trip, baked beans, cole slaw. About $14. The tri trip was amazing. The baked beans and cole slaw were very good, not amazing, but very good.

The place is simple atmosphere. The food is great. Staff is friendly and easy going. A good chill yuppie, urban place. Whatever the hell that means.

What is it about the smell of BBQ that drives me wild?  Who knows, maybe they should make it into a cologne for men....but anyway....I got to try this place out with a friend this weekend.  I'm always nervous when people say, "Oh this BBQ is the best" because I'm usually disappointed and I've just paid a fortune for meat draped in some crappy sauce.  However, I gotta say this was love at first smell!!  Right at the edge of Chinatown....WHAT? Did you say Chinatown?  Yeah, we all know the Chinese invented BBQ right?  LOL!!  No no no!!  Don't worry, It's not Chinese....and it is GREAT BBQ I'm happy to say!  Fun staff, great beer selections and the food was super good.  The loaves of bread awaiting you at your table should be a sign.  You're gonna be sopping up some sauce!  I chose the pulled brisket, the rest of the table chose the pulled pork.  I think we all chose the spicy sauce.  Mmm mmm good!  Fries, slaw or beans all are good and get the hush puppies!  I was too full on this visit to eat dessert but I hear the bread pudding and cobbler are really good.  Next time!!

There aren't may bbq restaurants on the East side of LA. In fact, there aren't may bbq restaurants in general in LA (that are particularly good anyways). As a reference I really like Philips BBQ over on Crenshaw and Adams (meat it properly cooked, and the sauce isn't overly sweet and has a nice lingering heat if you order the spicy version). So when Spring Street opened up I was really excited.

I walked in and got even more excited b/c of the beer selection and the keeping-it-real bag of white bread on the table. Then things went downhill from there...food wise. Service was fine.

Food:

Sampler plate - Included ribs, links, chicken, & brisket. Things were overcooked and improperly seasoned. Generally bbq is hard to overcook, b/c the process involves cooking for extended periods of time...but perhaps the heat was too high, b/c the final product was too dry and the texture was tough. The sauce was overly sweet and lacked any complexity that you sometimes find in bbq sauce.

Beans - under-seasoned and w/o character

Slaw - no acidity or sweetness

Beer - nice and cold

Disclaimer- I am a big fan of BBQ and have very high standards for grilled or smoked meats.

We went there for lunch on a Thursday.  Got there at 12 noon but were able to sit right down so that was good.  It was fairly busy the whole time and imagine dinner and weekends are even more busy.  We ordered the pulled pork entree and the Chicago Rib tips special.  Both were good though drenched in sauce which I think they rely on too heavily.  The mild sauce was good.  For a smokehouse the meat could have had more flavor and been more tender.  The Chicago rib tips were a little burnt.  The house brewed iced tea almost had no flavor.

I liked that they put loaves of bread on the tables so it's self serve.  The baked been were alright though nothing special.  The french fries were very good, even without ketchup.

Overall it is a good, cute, small little place.  Okay for a smoke house but would prefer a chain over this in terms of the quality of the meat, at least for this one trip.  If we go back I will try anopther type of meat and ask for it dry.

Waitstaff is very nice, friendly and attentive.
