Do ya like beer? Do ya like beer from small brewers, crafted with love? Do ya want to see how it's made, or do ya just want to know why small breweries are better than huge ones? Then come to Sprecher.
I was introduced to Sprecher many years ago (pre-internet) by one of my good friends. He had recently turned 21, and wanted to do the tour. Great time, very informative, and it was nice to see people that had actually been a part of the process talking about how it's made.
A happy memory was sampling in the beer garden some of the brews we had just seen them make. The sodas were wonderful as well. We frequently made the trip from Chicago to Glendale to pick up a few cases of both beer and soda. I am happy to say that, after much searching, I have found a local distributor that had brought the sodas to Nor Cal.
I am unhappy to say they don't have beer distributor in Nor Cal or Denver (where my friend now lives). Will someone send us some beer?
This brewery tour was definitely worth $4 a person. The actual tour lasts only about 30 minutes, then you spend about 45 minutes in the "beer garden" enjoying your samples. They also have some small snacks for sale--pretzels, cheese curds, pizza, etc. Those pretzels sure came in handy after a few beers.
The only complaint I have about Sprecher's tour is that they only give you 45 minutes to drink your 4 beer samples and whichever sodas you want to try. My boyfriend and I left with a few unused beer tickets, which was sad. It was mostly my fault though, since I got caught up on the sodas.
Pick up a case or two of beer and soda to take home. The prices are reasonable and the sodas are delicious. Mix and match to your heart's content. Pick up a growler or two of their alcoholic XXX root beer too. $10 for 64 ounces of this amazing stuff is a deal, believe me. Make sure you ask for a sample in the beer garden!
P.S. Try the cream soda. Best cream soda EVER.
I highly recommend their $4 tour. You get four 8 oz. beers, and all of the gourmet soda that you want--you get to keep the glass too, which is nicely etched with the brewery's name.
The tour is very family friendly--kids can come along for $1, and there were tons on my tour.
Remember to call in advance so that you're reserved a time; walk-ins might not be allowed when they're very busy.
If you're a fan of their soda, this is also an excellent place to buy it. You can mix and match 16 oz bottles for just $0.82, which is cheaper than any retail I'm aware of. I think this is also the only place you can get kegs of Sprecher soda. Their honey-flavored root beer is a superior beverage for those who love the classic taste (in spite of corn syrup, which turns off the snobs). Their ginger ale is a solid, but not too extreme natural-tasting beverage. Sprecher cherry cola and Puma Kola are both deceivingly original and complex flavors. The strongly-flavored cherry cola should mix well with liquor, and the Puma Kola is different from anything I've ever had--try them all on the tour!
The beer is also not bad. Only $1.60 for purchase afterwards, so the four samples you can pick after the tour are a great opportunity to test drive them. According the the beer snobs on beeradvocate, their Black Bavarian is the only brew that scores an "A." http://beeradvocate.co... It is indeed a tasty schwarzbier, but you should keep an open mind and try several at the end of the tour. I was also impressed with their relatively sweet and malty Pub Brown Ale, which I don't believe I've seen at liquor stores.
Best brewery tour ever. I've been regularly going to Milwaukee for years, but I had never taken the Sprecher tour until about a month ago. The beers I tried were delightful, and I wouldn't normally say this, but I loved their sodas. I ended up bringing home soda instead of beer. I highly recommend the root beer, lo-cal root beer, orange dream, cream soda, and ravin' red!.
Sprecher, while not the best brewery (or brewery tour) in Milwaukee (Lakefront), is part of one of the best lazy summer afternoon itineraries in Milwaukee.
All you do is wrangle up a few friends, draw straws for a designated driver and head over to Sprecher. You'll find most people don't actually use all their sample tokens in the tasting room - not everyone wants to drink three beers at 1 on a Wednesday - and will gladly give up extras. A little determined drinking means you can definitely get more than your four dollars' worth.
Once sufficiently full/tipsy, head over to Solly's or Kopp's for a burger. Don't forget to pick up your DD's check and promise them you'll all be going back soon.
I LOVED this brewery tour and the gift shop rocks! Ever try a Puma cola? YUM! The people were nice and the group that toured with us were just a bunch of fun-loving-Wisco-drinkers (SO fun)! Who would have thought that Root Beer BBQ sauce is amazing?!
GO HERE!
I really enjoyed this place. We arrived with one minute to spare, quickly checked in and paid $4 each for the tour and tasting. The tour was fast but informative and the guide was knowlegable and fun, answering my husband's (former brew pub manager) many detailed questions.
After the 30 minute tour, we were ushered into the tasting room and told to queue up for our first tasting - for which we got a choice of 3 kinds of beer (after the first we had a choice of 9). I went with the amber but also got to try the stout, as well as the stout mixed with a bit of cream soda. All were excellent. I also sampled the bavarian and abby triple which I enjoyed as well. Skip the gluten free unless that is what you are limited to. It just had an off taste.
One thing they don't mention right away is that you only have about 45 minutes to get in your 4 beer samples. They do "last call" and after that won't serve any more. And there is always a line for the bar so if you really want to get your money's worth, get back in line before your glass is empty and keep your eye on the clock.
We also got to try the XXX alcoholic root beer - damn that was tasty. And at $10 for a 64 ounce growler, we had to buy some to take home. Unfortunately, we sat outside waiting for a cab for over an hour so we drank most of it then (and finished off the rest while waiting for our megabus back to Chicago) so it never made it out of the state. Should have bought 2!
Staff was all friendly and funny. And bonus points go to the man who took pity on us waiting so long for our cab and gave us a lift back to the Third Ward!
A cold Cherry Cola with an adorable bear, eating some honey covered cherries? Who could ask for more? Love it. Thank goodness they sell these 4-packs at the local grocery stores in Chicago.
Locally run award-winning Milwaukee micro-brewery tour was quick and fun. If you're in Milwaukee for a few days it's definitely worth checking out.
$4 gets you 4 free beer samples and a free cup plus unlimited samples of soda (or POP if you're from the MW). Go with some friends so you can try them all.
Tours are weekends only and you need advance reservations. Call them for info.
quick note on transport there:
If you're from out of town, are not renting a car and don't want to throw down cash for a cab. The #10 bus can take you there from down town, just check out a map first.
Don't try calling the brewery for info, they gots none.
Oooh, cold, frosty beer, let's make out.
I went on a tour of this brewery with a smaller group of folks, and we got the VIP tour. We talked and walked through the brewery, which was really fun. Stared agog at the giant vats of beer, watched the beer making process, and openly coveted the job of "Brew Master" (that bastard has all the luck!).
I loved watching the bottles clink out on the conveyor belt, and we all got to pull a frosty bottle of root beer off the line for our own consumption. Total bonus because it was the best tasting root beer I have ever had!
We then enjoyed the sampling, which was the best part. Delicious beers or all shapes and sizes (I am an equal opportunity beer drinker). The guy who took us on the tour even cracked open some aged and specialty beers, which was amazing. And some delicious cheese curds of all varieties. For those uninitiated, cheese curds can be freaking awesome.
I ambled/drunkenly stumbled into the gift shop and bought a ton of crap, including a very nice Zip Up sweatshirt with the Sprecher Logo on it (now everyone thinks I own a weird European sports car, but I dig it).
All in all, a fabulous experience, I highly recommend getting a group together and taking a tour. Fun had by all!
This is the single best $4.00 you will spend! Go to the brewery tour and indulge in the best root beer and specialty sodas this nation has to offer. The tour is about 1 hour long. I guess the tour is as long as you want it to be because if you're thirsty, you'll take more time to drink more.
The best $4 spent. The tour was interesting. For $4, you get 4 (8 oz.) beers. You can't beat that! The kids get unlimited soda samples. The puma cola and cherry cola rock! The amber beer is awesome!
Good and quick tour. Gift shop is nice with cheap beer and sodas. Sometimes we stop in if we're in the area just to get some drinks. On the tour we also found out they are making this XXX root beer made in whiskey barrels and are selling jugs of that as well.
I enjoyed the tour itself but booking it wasn't fun. The website said for Saturday tours call the Monday before. So I did, Monday at noon. The person answering the phone put me on hold for a long time and then grumpily picked up and asked what I needed. I wanted the 3pm tour and it was already booked so I took the 2pm tour. When we went on our Saturday 2pm tour I heard the check in guy telling people there were plenty openings on the 3pm tour! What?
Also, the tour was way too crowded. I heard the check in guy say he allowed 90 people when there should only be 50. This I didn't think was a big deal until it came to sample time. We hardly got to sit and drink. The lines were so long at the bar that most of the time was standing in line because of the big crowd.
Overall, it's one of the better tours. I just thought it was odd to only give you 1 small glass and have to keep going up to the bar for refills. They did walk around with other odd flavors to try but with my luck I had a full glass at that time and didn't get to try any of the odd ones (like pizza beer). I did end up trying a lot of flavors of soda & beer (you are only allowed 4 beers but soda is unlimited) though, it was just a bit too crowded for me.
Good cheap entertainment just plan ahead with reservations. Tour is $4 and in the beer garden afterwards they sell sausages, cheese curds and pizza.
Begged my boyfriend to take me here when we visited his folks in Milwaukee a couple of years ago. The tour was a bit boring and long, but it was neat to see/touch/smell/taste the different ingredients used in beer including hops and barley! I prefer the lighter brews and enjoyed the Special Amber and Micro-Light. Sprecher also makes gourmet sodas (ginger ale, orange dream, ravin red)... a cold bottle of root beer is just heavenly!
Only $3 for tour, tasting and a souvenir glass with the Sprecher logo :-)!
Ok, so I don't drink. My S.O. and her family, being from Milwaukee, drink heavily. So we go on a brewery tour. Whatever, I'm game. What I didn't know is that they brew their own root beer and other soft drinks here as well. (Many have honey, which I found out later, and I'm vegan so it sucked to be me). When I got back home out west I saw the Sprecher Soda at the BevMo and a few other places, so It's pretty popular. And what i had was good as well.
The tour is really nice. They let you taste the hops if you want. Course I had to try it. Very bitter, and a bit more herby than I would have imagined. The guides are friendly, but I think the tour was a little ong, in my opinion.
Still recommended. Good for families.
This was really my first time getting a chance to try Sprecher, and it rocks! I went to Milwaukee with a few friends who have all done the Miller tour so we were looking for a few other brewery tours. The Sprecher one was the first one of the day and it was the best!
They make great tasting beers and sodas, with as many local ingredients as they can. The tour lasts about 30 minutes depending on how many questions you have. They you are off to the tasting room where you get to sample four different beers and as much soda as you can handle. The tour is worth the three dollars and shouldn't be missed.
I did the tour of the brewery it was fun. I like the beer, the root beer was little too sweet for me, at the end you get to keep the glass since I went with my dad and uncle I got myself a little collection of barware. It was a PITA to find since I am not from these parts but overall a fun experience.
I have been a fan of the gourmet soda for years so I decided it was time to make a journey to see how its made. For $4 you get a neat piece of glassware to taste with and take home and you also get unlimited soda and 4 beer tickets to use while on the tour. It was very informative and the people are very friendly. It didn't hurt that it was Octoberfest so everyone was a bit more jolly then normal. You can buy the soda or the beer at a very discounted rate. They also have a ton of other goodies like t-shirts, glassware and food products. All in all it was very positive experience and I would do it again when I run out of soda.. I bought 5 cases .. tee hee!
I have been on an awful lot of brewery and brau house tours -- from Lone Star to Miller to Budweiser to Heineken. Sprecher is not that great. It is a nice little spot with some good character.
What makes the tour good is the staff and the people. They let you taste all the beers. Better yet they have you taste the sodas! The Cream Ale and the Orange are out-of-this-world.
Also, if you've spent any time in Milwaukee the gift shop is nice.
Four stars for the excellent beer available at this microbrewery. Between the two of us, we tried eight of the nine different brews available on tap at the moment. All were quite good. I really like the hoppy beers, so of course I liked the IPA, but I also really enjoyed their amber and the black bavarian ale. Oh, and the triple belgian was also really nice. Oh heck, they're all good.
The tour itself was ok...being a bit of a beer enthusiast, I didn't feel like I learned a lot about the brewing process that I didn't already know, but don't let that stop you from taking the tour - for the low, low price of $3, you get a ~30 minute tour, a small souvenir beer tasting glass as well as getting to try four of their tasty concoctions. And if you have time, you can have as many tastes of their soda as you would like - turns out the also make seven different types of soda. I can't vouch for the soda, though, as I was too busy drinking the delicious beer.
I love all things Brewery Tour and Sprecher is UP THERE. Forget about Miller. Boring. Not enough beer. Bad quality. Check out Sprecher and Lakefront.
I haven't been in awhile but whenever a friend comes "home" to Milwaukee with me, I like to take them to Sprecher. Its German, its cute and its oh-so Milwaukee. Good tour, good beer!
How sad for me that for years I have been wast(ed)ing my time at the over-crowded, over-rated and under-tasty beer tour across town! I cannot believe in all my years living close to and playing within the Cheddar Curtain I have not stumbled from this place!
Sprecher is a small yet fabulous maker of quality beers and sodas. They have been and/or soda for just about every taste. For the imbibers among us, the beers run the gamut from ales to ambers to very, very dark stout that goes well with chocolate. Oh, really...have YOU tried it yet?
If you're going for the buzz kill, or are bringing one along, the sodas are all made with natural ingredients and have delightful undertones of vanillas, honeys and other flavors to excite your taste buds.
The tour is $3 and includes a "souvenir glass" (a 4-oz.) and four beer tickets. Soft drinks are all you can fit in before you get sick. The tour is mercifully short as the place is very small, and you're set off in a delightful little Octoberfest replica bar afterward. No one hurries you, and you and your amigos can sip multiple beers, purchase some cheap bits to eat and enjoy.
Call ahead for reservations, this small gem fills up fast, especially on weekends. Oh, and bring your wallet. You can mix and match a case afterwards. And you probably will. We always do.
Maybe we'll do the tour next time. Traffic on the way out of Illinois made us too late for our reservation... so we wandered around the gift shop, and picked out three cases of mixed sodas (none of us are heavy drinkers) and some root beer bbq sauce "orange dream" lip balm and other weirdness. We heard the guy at the counter telling people he "might" be able to fit them into a tour later... but as he was wheeling our three cases out, he was totally ready to fit us into any tour we wanted to go on.
I disagree that Sprecher has "more beer". All we got were three coupons to fill our 6-ounce glasses with. I took my friend from Japan, she loved it.
The gift shop sells beer at the same price you can get at a grocer, so I dont know what the "deal" was with that. Lots of little trinkets, even a stuffed Griffon mascot! The beer garden is kinda cool, and I think they rent it for parties and events.
The tour is great, you get to see the two big converted milk kettles they still use, and they pass around some hops for you to smell. Nice history of the company is given, although theres more to it than what he says. The guy is a little cheap (cant have a profitable business in this tax hell of a Doyle state if you aren't!)
People in other states that can get the soda (41?) but not the beer (11?) say "What? They make BEER?".
Dont worry about the honey being a sweetener if you're a vegan; theres so little honey in it, and theres no cholesterol so I dont know what you think you're eating thats animal. The other products use cane sugar, NOT CORN SYRUP. Lighten up & stop eating all the animals food.
Love the tour, but I've heard Lakeside is better & you can drink as much as you want (AND they have a fish fry!)
This review is not of the tour, but of their root beer. My sister, cousins, nieces and nephews are all root beer snobs. When we are at a restaurant in Milwaukee, we'll say, "If you have Sprecher root beer, we'll have that; if not, we'll have something else." I've only found two places to buy it in my current hometown of DC. Sadly, both are a far drive for me, so nowadays I get cold frosty Sprecher root beer all too rarely.
We have made a tradition of going to this sweet little brewery a few times a summer. They have spruced it up on the outside but it's still modest & charming on the inside. The tour is worth every penny (I think it's only a few bucks to get a ticket). At the end of the tour you get to taste all the goodies and if you're 21 that means some killer brew. We always leave that place as happy as can be and with a trunk full of sodas & beer. I highly recommend going - maybe I'll see you there! P.S. It's a good idea to call ahead for hours and to reserve a ticket. Here's the site: http://www.sprecherbre.../
A good brewery tour. Better then the corporate tours at Miller.
