Great prices, great customer service, pet friendly - what more can you ask for? It's having all the stuff you would ever want from REI + The Sports Authority, but in an environment that you actually enjoy shopping in.
I buy all my running/hiking shoes here, and there is one guy in the shoe dept (sorry - don't remember his name) who is an orthotist and great at fitting you for shoes. They also are helpful without being overly solicitous so you can feel comfortable spending an entire afternoon trying on shoes and no one gives you the stink eye. -

What a great store. Finally some freakin customer service I can write good things about!
I was searching for new running shoes along with some running shirts because that's just how I roll. I came here after going to another sports store that left much to be desired.
As a change of pace I was greeted at the door and twice asked on the way to shoes if I needed help. Plus the girl in shoes was on hand if I needed anything. With the selection they had I was all set and spent about 30 minutes trying on shoes and walking around in them (which they didn't mind at all). Finally I was set and was directed to clothes for what I needed.
A great experience! -

I realized exactly how different San Francisco is from Ohio when I went to Sports Basement to buy a shirt with any local sports team for my toddler son and couldn't find a single one. And the staff seemed confused why anyone might want that...
Anyway, apart from the fact that they didn't have what I wanted, and no one working in the store seemed to be able to tell me where to find the children's clothes, it was really an interesting place. It had an upscale feel in a warehouse type setting. The prices were surprisingly good, and they had a large selection of North Face items, most of which were on sale.
If you're looking for sporting goods, this place is awesome. If you're looking for athletic clothes for kids, you're probably going to have to order it online. -

Sports Basement has a huge selection. Storewide wood floors get me feeling like i'm at a ski lodge or a far-off cabin or a down-home backyard deck. Staff are easy to find and know the merchandise, including how to use it. And they know their own area well, plus can help you get started in another department when it's busy.
Got great help purchasing a Northstar backpack that really, really works. Got great help in the bike shop, which is in the basement and has great pricing on merchandise and repairs. Comfortable reading area to test drive books. Bought a highly educational book on sports nutrition.
Staff handles customer traffic well including on busy Saturdays when there are hundreds of customers. Frequent store specials. Quiet corner on top floor with informative classes. All retail should be this good. Consistent winner. -

About six years ago I began running. Slowly at first, then building to around three miles almost daily for a few years. I found running to be great for my mental, spiritual and physical health. My runs started changing after switching shoes. Over the last two years I would try new shoes hoping to get back into my running groove. Unfortunately that never happened. With repeated injuries I dropped my running and my weight has sky rocketed.
Last week I went into Sports basement to try once again. This wonderful sales person Shelby stepped up. She watched me walk, then jog and suggested a shoe. Here is the catcher! She told me not to go with the first shoe I tried on (Who does that in this capitalist driven economy?). Instead she suggested I hold off on my purchase until I tried some other shoes.
Ever so thoughtful she then called other stores and had three or four different brands transferred to Bryant St. location. I went back today and tried them all on and went with a pair of Mizunos.
We'll see what happens. Wish me luck.
Thanks again Sports Basement for stepping up with superior customer service.
Shelby, a special thanks to you.
Kindest Regards,
Corey Drew -

One of the few remaining brick-and-mortar stores that can give you prices lower than Amazon, while maintaining an upscale store feel and pleasant shopping experience! I loved the handwritten signs and everything previous reviewers have mentioned--if you pressed me to find an analogy... basically if Trader Joe's started selling sports equipment you would get Sports Basement. I would not be surprised if you told me they were owned by the same company.
I discovered SB through coworkers when we were coordinating for snow trips this winter. Really friendly salesman Tom helped me with complicated snowboard boots from fitting to lacing to testing and heat-moulding, they sell all the top brands like Burton, North Face, Salomon, Columbia, foursquare etc. snowboard gear, discounted lift tickets, and they had 20% off everything until the first snowfall in Tahoe.
I got a pair of ThirtyTwo Lashed FastTrack snowboard boots for $50 (originally $195) and got the 20% discount on top of that... as the salesman said, "a screamin' deal". Also a Camelbak Zoid pack for 20% off the price Amazon is selling it for, and a pair of Smith Optics Scope Pro goggles for $35. I am so psyched for this snow season and glad for all my quality gear I picked up from SB!! -

All this time I've always thought that the Shoe Dog at the other running stores was the greatest thing on earth to diagnose what kind of runner you are and exactly what kind of shoe you need. I believed this to be true for quite some time, until I meet Renard at Sports Basement today! We spent about 25 minutes going through several shoes and I was blown away at how he corrected the perspective I had on what type of shoes I actually needed, by looking at the way I squat, run , jog and well simply stand in my shoes-- I haven't experienced knowledgeable, experienced customer service like this in a sports store in a very long time. Go Renard and go Sports Basement!-- I'm definitely a fan!

Amazing customer service, awesome deals now and then. I love how they make their own signs. Like the one in the elevator with pictures drawn in crayola markers and words written in English and Spanish. It's humorous and so, I can't even find the word for it....all I can think of is human.
Oh, and they have free parking! -

People who work here actually enjoy their job and if they don't they hide it very well. Not once have I encountered a rude employee. Very friendly and willing to help out when needed.
Like another yelper said you come here with one thing in mind but leave with more than just that. Prices are awsome. -

Every time I come here, I have something specific I need to pick up, and usually I leave with more then what I intended to buy because it is very difficult to pass up that super deals I find here. I came here last weekend looking for a tennis racket and tennis balls. I found an awesome racket that was MSRP for $170 marked down to $120, and on clearance for $70, and the best part was that this weekend there was a 20% off the entire store. so I got the racket for $56!! $56 for a prestrung racket sounds pretty awesome to me and when I picked up a pack of string and was ready to pay for it, they told me that sting is free with racket purchase! This place just gets better and better. So this weekend I left with 3 tubes of tennis balls, a racket, a puma hoodie, a Calvin Klein sweatshirt, a bottle, and a visor all for $123 pretax!
When I came here about 1/2 a year ago, I brought the most comfortable boots I own! They are by Uggs. I think they were retail for about $200. Since i got them in the late spring, they were marked down to $125. Since I had AAA insurance, I got another 10% off. That is a pretty awesome deal for Uggs. 50% off. I dont think I can find that anywhere else. Recently I saw the same pair of Uggs in the mall and they were selling it at $179 as the sale price!
I am sure you can tell I love sale. It makes me super happy =) -

Ordered a pair of ski pants online from them, after 6 days I get an email that says they are not in stock. For making me wait, they give me a coupon for 20% off my next online order. I go to the website and their current deal is 20% off for anyone on the site - nothing like making me feel special for the hassle by giving me the same deal everyone gets! Looks like a good store if you are local, but I wouldn't order online again.

I love this place!!!! The prices are so cheap as compared to the full retail prices and even outlets!
I wanted a warm northface jacket for the winter season, so we hit up the northface outlet at Berkley first, there weren't any good styles in or even right sizes. Bummed, my boyfriend later found this place for prices that are a steal!
Even better, on the day we went, there was an art exhibition in the basement (just at the lower level) that gave a deal that if you visited them, they'd automatically give you a 25% off your entire purchase! SCORE! :D
So basically we got 2 northface jackets that day. My boyfriend got me a Northface Denali for, well, just because. :) He's such a sweetheart! Now we can match. Lol. And I got a windbreaker northface for about $80 with tax included already (for one). So how cheap is that? As compared to $130+ at full retail.
But anyway, I went back again for a timbuk2 bag and it was only around $65! Last time I checked, it costs $90+ for a timbuk2 at full retail.
Overall, I'm in love with this place. If you need brands from northface, timbuk2 or any sports related gear, this is the place to go! :) -
Review from Sandy L.
This is a GREAT place to do last minute Christmas shopping. And if it's not for Christmas shopping, a GREAT place to get outdoor equipment. This place is HUGE! It's 4 levels high and it's got everything for the outdoors you can think of. I needed to get gifts for my cousins, parents, boyfriend, friends and within 30 minutes left with zero remaining gifts to purchase.
The workers are always available to help and they're very knowledgeable on where to find what you are looking for. A northface backpack? First floor. Women's running? Third floor. Camping gear? 2nd floor. DONE!
They don't usually have sales as they already give the best deal they can bring you... at least that's what the workers say. And I would generally agree unless you go to the Outlets on clearance. But, they have lots of inventory and a wide range of equipment. You won't leave unhappy!
P.s. during the holidays they made apple cider. SCORE! -

GREAT customer service!! this is a sports haven! I found such a great deal on a pair of last years skis- just so happened to have my size which is so rare. The guy helping me was honest, attentive, and not pushy at all. perfect balance of help.
The girls in the clothing dept are also extremely nice. I want to come back asap :D -

First of all, I literately created this yelp account to write this comment. That's how awesome Sports Basement is....
Best customer service ever, and I work in 1 of the major companies that is very well know for its customer service!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought a Lib Tech attack banana snowboard on sports basement website 3 days ago. I called them 2 days ago in the morning to make sure the board has been sent out. Since I placed the order after 12pm, the order was not in process yet. Instead, the person helped me place another order so that they can ship it out right away. Yesterday, I called again to see what the status of the shipping is. Sports basement told me that if I don't get the board yesterday, they will remove the shipping cost (I had overnight shipping). On the side note, Seattle is currently snowing, and whenever Seattle snows, the entire city just shut down (sadly). Anyway, I didn't get my board yesterday, so they removed the shipping cost for me ($25). ALSO, I just noticed they have the promotion on their site, so I called in about 2 hours ago, and without any question asked, they applied the promotion on board right away.
The call wait time was 0 second for all the calls I placed. I was never put on hold the entire time. They were extremely helpful and friendly. I talked to David, Amy, and forgot the name of the 3rd person :)
Can you possibly get any better customer service than this? -

I make up excuses to visit Sports Basement. I have more fun at Sports Basement than I do at most bars in SF. Why? 4 floors of great deals, unbeatable stock (seriously, they have everything you could ever want for sporting enthusiasts and even your everyday joe...seriously, I came here to get a travel coffee mug because it was the best deal and they had a really good selection), and the friendliest people.
They cultivate a fantastic sense of community by hosting in-store classes and talks -- everything from yoga classes to documentary film nights. Apparently you can even have your company's holiday party here!
There are a few sale racks scattered throughout the store, but everything is already marked down from what you'd pay at REI. The employees are incredibly helpful and endlessly enthusiastic, and to top it all off they even have quarter candy machines so you can grab a handful of peanut M&Ms or Hot Tamales on your way out.
You also get a 10% discount if you show your UCSF gym ID! -

Sports Basement used to get 5 stars from me. That was a long time ago. Service there has gone waaaay downhill. Today I called to ask if they sold Garmin StreetMap DVDs and the woman told me Garmin sells them. Yeah, babe, I know that. I am asking if Sports Basement sells them. Lots of help she was.

Easily the best Sporting Good store in the whole city.
I like that Sports Basement focuses on everything that other sporting good stores doesn't focus on, although you can find everything related to sports here, it is very nice to know the smaller sports are recognized and highlighted here, i.e. Cycling, Swimming, Ski/Snowboarding, Climbing, Tri, Running, then all your team sports stuff like Baseball, Basketball, Football, Soccer, etc. The other cool thing about SB is that they sell casual stuff like regular everyday clothes and shoes.
With that being said, when it comes to pricing, SB usually cant be beat, especially since they have discounts for every other organization, club, employer in the city. However, because they are a "Basement" if you are looking for something in particular, lets say for example a particular kind of helmet from Giro or a certain line of jacket from North Face. I would say about 50% of the time they will have it. The good news is if they don't have it they can special order it and have it there within a reasonable time or you can find something else that will fit your needs. Other then that, SB is a well stocked shop with a good variety of brands and will definitely have the most needed necessities readily available.
On another note, SB does a great job at sponsoring weekly events like Run Clubs, City Bike Rides, and yoga just to name a few. -

If I had to pick one store to get locked in overnight, Sports Basement would be it!! (Although Costco does come in a close second...)
Anywho, you'll find anything and everything here. End of story.
If you don't like paying full retail, the sale section is always stocked and gives you nice alternatives. I come here primarily for running needs (leggings and base layers). -

I loved shopping here. I came for the my first time to Sports Basement because a 5K road race was having a bib pick up, and I really enjoyed perusing the aisles. One of the coolest parts of the store is the layout and the SIGNS! Very creative signs indicating "Women's Running" or "Men's Yoga", and often the signs are artistic and multicolored, making it very easy to find the section you need. Additionally, the prices show what the product was originally selling for, and what the current discount is (ex: Was $45, NOW it's $40). I really enjoyed shopping here, and the staff is very friendly.

Been a fan of Sports Basement (both in SF and Sunnyvale). This is a much larger store, with lots of quality equipment, and sportswear. Always able to find what I want (even for the kids).
Would have given this store 5 stars if it weren't for the one person on staff that seemed to be more irritated about answering a simple question than helpful in the kids shoe area. We brushed it off (possibly having a bad day)...
Nevertheless, quality merchandise sold here! -

This is a very big store. Each level has a good amount of sporting goods. Just that the way things are setup, can get very easily lost in where things are. It's a nice store, just not easy to navigate around.

This store is AMAAAAAZING!!!!!! There's so much cool stuff in here, my head was spinning & I was overloaded with joy!!! SPORTS STUFF...FOR CHEAP!!!!!! And they have A LOT of stuff here...stuff you didn't even know you needed...until you see it here...discounted! *EEEEEEE!!!!!!!!*
Seriously, they have a massive selection of triathlon gear & accessories that I haven't seen in any other store, and the selection in ALL of the departments is really good. This store is MASSIVE, yet always clean & well organized, you can't go wrong coming in here...it feels like EVERYTHING is ALWAYS on SALE! The employees are always really friendly & helpful too, if you should have any questions, or need help with products...a lot of them are athletes themselves, and have tried a lot of the products in the store, so they can give you their opinion on a lot of things, which I find really helpful if I'm on the fence deciding between two items. I absolutely LOVE this place!! -

For example: basketball, north face jackets, golf clubs, bats, and everything else you can think of related to sports. This place is like heaven!!
I come here to buy my jackets because they are usually cheaper than other retail stores. Also, i come here to play my basketball and other sports gears. Very cool store, lots of selections. GREAT PLACE!! -

I usually go to the location near Crissy Field, but stopped in this location last week to pick up my bib for the Big Gay 10K.
I love both stores, but this one edges out the other one slightly in my book because of the separate floors. It was less overwhelming having different departments on different floors. The running department was my destination and I liked how the shoes were organized. The guy who helped me find a new pair of running shoes was helpful when I explained the issues I was having with my existing shoes. He suggested the best shoes to provide the cushioning I was missing in my existing shoes. (Without his help I would have had to try on every neutral shoe they sold!) Not only was he helpful and knowledgeable about the shoes, but he was also patient as I tried on several different styles and jogged around trying them all out.
They also get a big shout out for helping the community. That night they were giving 10% off to people running in the race and then donated *another* 10% of runner purchases to the SF Aids Foundation. That was incentive enough to buy socks and a shirt, too!
Bonus: Parking was easy.
Five stars and two thumbs up! -

Sports Basement is hands down the best place to get sport, excercise and outdoor equipment and supplies. This place is HUGE and they have a great selection of running shoes, bike gear, swim gear, work out gear, camping supplies, clif bars, etc., etc., you get the picture. Staff is generally very nice and knowledgeable. Prices are good (like, same as http://Amazon.com), and they will give you 10% off with your gym membership card.
Oh yeah and there is free parking in the rear (hahaha) -

If there's an adult Disneyland that exists anywhere outside of Anaheim, California (and doesn't feature a pole, purple interior lighting, or a pit boss), it's Sports Basement. I could get lost in this store for hours on end and not feel even the slightest bit bored with my time.
I usually come to Sports Basement because of their stellar bike department, but no matter what you need, rest assured anything concerning the great outdoors will be fully represented within this four story ode to athletes. Heck, they even cater to folks who aren't athletes in the least! Upon stocking up on supplies for the SF Marathon I ran in last Sunday, I noticed they have a huge portion of their 3rd floor dedicated to surviving the somewhat treacherous conditions of Burning Man. Tell me another big box sports retailer that'd even think to ensure stinky hippies are well taken care of while trippin' on fungi in the middle of a salt flat in Nevada -- chances are, there isn't a single one that comes to mind.
To make things even better, they have an incredibly friendly staff, often times have free things to nibble on in their foyer (chips, guacamole, veggies, et al.), and they throw one heck of a fun holiday party. Make sure you're on their email list once December rolls around!Listed in: 2-4-6-8, Who Do We Appreciate?, The Great Outdoors

I really like this store...whether this location or the one in the Marina, they have an excellent assortment of any and all items associated with sports, fitness and outdoor activities. The brands range and it really is one-stop-shopping. The customer service is fantastic and all staff are very knowledgeable and can offer some great advice.

San Francisco, CA
The prices are great and the store is well stocked -- on that count it gets five stars from me.
I have to give it a two because of the staff -- some are fantastic, others not so much. Case in point: I was there recently standing in line, the only one there. A clerk was behind the counter and while he saw me, there was no nod, no sign of acknowledgement. Instead, he just kept talking into his walkie talkie with his buddy, cracking jokes, and making me feel less than invisible. Then another employee came over and promptly treated me in a friendly, polite way.
I'm all for an informal work environment, but for an employee who is way too cool to serve a customer waiting to pay with purchases in hand? Not so much. -
Review from Annie W.
San Francisco, CA
This is the store I came to for all my North Face needs. (maybe not needs, and more of wants...) I came here because everything would be a little discounted, generally $10~$20 off which makes me feel a little better about splurging for yet another jacket. However, I noticed recently, with all the new items, things aren't discounted anymore and are sold at full price. Kind of a bummer but there are still several items that are marked down from original price. I'm guessing these sales are sporadic so you'll have to visit the store often to catch the deals. What I also love about this place is, they sell shoes like UGG's and Toms and all the shoes and their sizes are out for you to try. This definitely beats having to go to places like Nordstroms where you gotta hunt down a SA, then wait for them to bring you a size, then depending if the shoe fits or not, you gotta hunt them down again.
As for the people who work here, they're real friendly. There's usually always someone around to help, but they're not following you around like a department store.
Did I mention, they rent out snowboards and skiis and boots here??!?!!? And they do so at a very reasonable price. I don't remember exactly how much it was but I can tell you it was a lot cheaper than renting it on the mountain. You get the equipment for basically 3 days too because it was explained to me like this, first day, pick up, second day, actually using it, third day, return. And of course you can rent for more days depending on the duration of your trip. When you go to return it, you just go back to where you got it, drop it off and you can be on your way. -

It really is a basement. A storage made into a store for the active people of sport. Floors of active wear and outdoor gear. Dressing rooms made of shower curtains. Industrious interior. Found myself a sporty swimsuit and got the sales discount. NICE!
I also like that there is parking in the back underground and elevator access. -

Yeahhh Sports Basement!
Couldn't get much better than SB, its a huge, 5 floor mecca of outdoor gear and sporting goods. Average to below-average prices, and a fantastic staff thats usually very knowledgable and helpful. The bike shop is widely known as one of the best in the city, and they have a great selection of high quality outdoor brands.
I worked for a similar establishment years ago back in Connecticut, and it was surprising how much better organized and friendly the staff at sports basement were. SB is extremely involved in the community, and they are very environmentally conscious, something that many sports shops lack.
Never had a bad experience here, even when returning merchandise or asking lots of questions. I actually like the old, worn, creaky wood floors and slight musty smell it has from being in an older building. Gives it character, its not another linoleum-floored, super bright sports chain with the sole purpose of making money.

My neighbor recommended this place long before I moved to San Francisco, but since becoming a resident I haven't had a reason to patronize Sports Basement ...
Until Friday night.
I got lazy. I didn't lock my bike properly. And my back tire was stolen while I naively sipped my Corona on the back patio of El Rio.
It was 7:15 in the evening when I noticed. Pulling out my trusty Android phone, I quickly pulled up bike shops in the area. There was one less than 1/2 away! Sweet! So I called, asked if they were still open, was told no, and offered an extra $50 on top of the cost of the repair if he would stay open for an extra 20 minutes.
Nope.
Damn.
"Try Sports Basement". He said.
Best advice in a long time.
My date and I walked, Barted and bussed our way to 15th and Bryant. And at first I thought this review was going to have far less stars, based on the fact that it took ten minutes for anyone to acknowledge our presence. But man, when they did it was awesome.
They fixed my bike. They recommened a great wheel. They were nice and helpful and funny.
And to top it all off, the man working the cash register on the main floor was ... how do I put this ... pretty effing hot.
So thanks to all who have recommended Sports Basement, and allow me to become one of the ever-growing fan base. This place rocks. The service rocks. The product rocks. The hot guy rocks. Everything about this place it top-notch, and I will most certainly be coming back.
The End
