This is like mecca for athletic people and people who pretend to be sporty (myself).
As a YMCA employee (members too, I believe), I got 10% off (in addition to their already low prices) my sweet splurges: a pair of Mizuno running shoes and a few North Face jackets. Their prices are much, much better than any other sporting place, such as REI, and they have a pretty great selection of shoes, clothing, sporting equipment and the like. Much better than Sports Authority.
The only downside is that they don't allow dogs anymore, and there's nothing more heart-breaking for me than having to leave my pup in the car (with the windows down of course) and tell him that I'll be back in a few to let him roam around Crissy Field. Otherwise, this is my go-to place for anything outdoorsy. Score!
I made Sports Basement my go-to destination for all my sporting wear and gear cus it's cheap, and I'm cheap... err, unemployed.
I came in during my run one day to replace an armband for my ipod. The staff was friendly and helpful from the minute I stepped in, as usual, and offered me some towels when he noticed that I was sweating like a leaky sprinkler, (tmi?) I had to put my purchase on hold since I don't run with my wallet, and surprisingly, they'll hold your items for 5 whole days! What retailer holds items for more than 24hrs nowadays? SB, that's who!
Anyways, I can never walk out of here with less than what I need. Some extra running pants and northface pull-overs never hurt anybody, especially in SF. It's more like motivation to get moving! What else do I have to do with my time?!
p.s. Burton and Solomon boots for half+ off msrp!
I've biked past this Sports Basement several times this summer since I started riding my bike ... but today after meeting friends at Festival Pavilion to watch the Blue Angels we decided to actually make this a destination to check out after the 4 minute air show we crossed the bridge to see.
I was stressed out dodging all the festival attendees and trying not to hit any children that I barely noticed the wind. This sports basement is pretty big - maybe because it's all one floor, but it's a bit overwhelming. Unlike the Bryant St. location, this one actually has climbing gear - it carries a few ropes, shoes, biners, cams, slings etc. Pretty large sales section, but b/c of the traffic, also very picked through as well.
I'm a fan of Sports Basement because I've yet to be met with bad / unfriendly service and yet to leave empty handed. Next time I should come in a car cause it was only the thought of having to bike back with 30lbs of stuff did I actually hold back.
Fifty some odd days until the 2009/10 ski / board season officially starts and that means it's time to hit the Sports Basement to load up on some new gear!
KTPower is making the leap to start her winter sports adventure so a new jacket and a helmet is in order. You can't beat the selection and price here and the knowledgeable service is a bonus. Sure, you could go elsewhere but why?
It's an interesting place, and the one on Old Mason has pleanty of parking which for a suburb girl like me is is a total plus.
I wouldn't say it's ultra cheap or anything tho. I went in hoping to pick up some discounted soccer and running gear. Most things were maybe a $1-$2 less than what you would find at sport authority or Big5.
Where I did find some savings was in the kids shorts. I found soccer socks and shorts for me in children's sizes for $10 a pair (shorts) and $3 socks. - so if you can fit in kid's stuff, it's a good place to look.
Shoes were maybe $5 less than at most of the soccer stores, but certainly not a savings worthy of a drive to the city. Also my new asics were actually cheaper elsewhere.
Friendly floor staff, who helped me with their know how decided what gel packs I needed for the marathon I am running, and helped me pick a running belt and water bottles.
Although I brought my own bag, I didn't recieve an entry for what ever contest they were holding (boo) and the checker guy was less than pleasant.
I would come back here if I was looking for something of the speciality nature, or if I happen to already be in the city, but in general, most of the sports stores in suburbia have the same stuff, just as cheap, with pleanty of parking. It's not worth a trip down JUST to go here.
My favorite sporting goods store ever. I got a great deal in a sick Solomon snowboard. I get athletic apparel, hiking shoes, sunglasses, power bars...this place has it all. Best, it is a real community spot. It's a converted supermarket, which makes it interesting. The employees are very nice and helpful. The prices will beat almost any other competing store. Regular lectures for runners, climbers, anyone looking for more info on their favorite sport. Situated on the Chrissy Field bike path, putting it in perfect proximity to the GG Bridge and that oversized playground called Marin County.
I came here for the first time a few weeks ago and it was ah-mazing! They have everything you would ever think of (sports-wise) and everything you would never think you needed til you got there! I must say I do like their little descriptions of the products...for example: Uggs good if you're in Laguna Beach.
Will definitely come here for all my sporting needs.
A cornucopia of sporting goods galore. Prices are good and stock is more than bountiful. 10% off if you show your health club membership card. Lots of parking, too. Definitely going here over Lombardi's from now on!
Calling all sports enthusiasts! Sports Basement is the ultimate store for all of your athletically inspired needs. From yoga to snowboarding, basketball to biking, they really have it all! If you ever have a question about anything they sell, don't be shy. Their staff is exceptionally knowledgeable, and always willing to help.
Recently, I also discovered that they rent bicycles for $10 for 3 hours! And not some rickety, rusty old bikes, but ones that appear to be in mint condition. This is great for someone who wants to take a ride down the Marina Greens.
Added Bonus: They even offer a 10% discount with certain gym memberships. Just show them your card and save even more than their already reduced prices.
Nice staff. Huge selection o' stuff. But I just wasn't impressed with their prices. Sure, there's a bunch of sale items. But aside from that, the prices seemed pretty much in line with any other store in the Marina District. Will give them a few more chances and see if I become a believer...
Love love love this store. Got the call. Had to act fast. Friend wanted to work out. I was out grocery shopping on the weekend. What?Surprised? Had jeans on. No where near my place. So, I crossed through the Arguello gate and down along Crissy Field to find just the shorts I needed. Got a great deal on them too.

For all you shoppers here. Listen carefully. Go to the exit door. Grab a "Competetor" Magazine. This month there is a rock climber on the cover. Its right there at the door. Flip through the pages. About a quarter of the way through you will find a 10% off coupon for Sports Basement. I had no idea!!! Its always there!!! Yea! I have been a few months in a row and I always find the coupon before I shop. You could save hundreds!
Now gets to shopping and thank me later:)

SF Gem
Despite the various outdoor equipment stores in the Bay Area, when I can find time to get over to either of these establishments, I always find something to purchase. And usually $20-30 less than at REI.
A friend of mine encouraged me to go on a light jog and let me preface this embarrassment: I can't run for crap. Give me an elliptical machine and I can go at it for an hour. A treadmill? Maybe 20 minutes without stopping. Jogging? Forget about it. He he he.
So after my poor humiliating show there was something I was looking for and stopped in here to look for a light North Face fleece to keep me warm on those Tahoe hikes in the early morning.
This is a larger warehouse like site of the one I usually hit at Potrero Hill. Large and expansive enough to make me wander around looking for the sale racks. Cycling. Snowsports. Running gear. Shoes. Everything a newbie hiker would wish for with the holidays coming up.
The staff here were nice and ensured that I was finding what I was looking for. Checkout is simple, efficient and we did that within a span of 30 minutes tops.
I could hang out here for hours. Their selection of products is amazing, and the staff here clearly love what they do. I particularly recommend those in the bike department--friendly, knowledgeable, and delightful.
Recently rented bikes here for a ride across the Golden Gate Bridge into Sausalito. What I LOVED about the experience:
1) Location Right at the Presido/GG Bridge
2) Rental Fees are EXTREMELY reasonable - Most bikes are $10 for 3 hours or $20 for 24 hours.
3) Low - Hassle. I didn't need a top security clearance to rent a bike. Simple reasonable process
4) Discount - Are you a Cal alum? Costco member? AAA member? Health Club member? Chances are, you'll find SOME organization you belong to in order to qualify for a 10% discount.
5) Helpful Staff - They actaully appear to enjoy what they do.
6) No nickle and diming - I rented the bikes for the day, but actually got back in just over 3 hours ... they gave me the 3 hour rate. I was willing to pay the day rate, but I appreciated them cutting me a bit of slack.
7) This place is HUGE. If it's sports and or outdoor related and they don't have it, it must not exist.
Overall, a GREAT retail experience ... VERY rare these days.
They have every possible thing you'll ever need for an outdoor adventure, or for a sport, your bike, running, snow gear, you name it. They have snow jackets on sale for $75 and pants for $50. Tempting! This store is absolutely HUGE! Don't bother going to another sports store, you just need to come here.
You can rent bicycles here! $20 for an hour I believe :) Riding along the marina on a warm day sounds very inviting.
Not to mention the gorgeous view of the Golden Gate Bridge surrounding the store I stopped by the Palace of Fine Arts and had a little photo opt and enjoyed the sun before I went into Sports Basement. It's so close by! How could i resist this SF landmark?
And me? I picked up a knee brace for $21 as I have wobbly, sad knees from being born with slightly misaligned kneecaps. That doesn't stop me from going running along the beach along the coast of the city! And this is where Sports Basement comes in... to provide me with all the essentials I need to stay comfortable while I run!
This store to me is like most people's Costco or Target. You know how you can't leave Costco or Target without buying something you think/hope will be useful? Yeah, it's something like that. I can't leave this place without dropping some major dough.
Firstly, I blame their awesome discounts on North Face items. Secondly, I blame their year round stock of snowboarding gear. I was in here last weekend, you know, the one where it was actually warm enough that you actually sweat, and I was trying on snow parkas and Uggs. Snow parkas, for goodness sake!
I love the setup, however haphazard it looks. There is a method to the madness. It's like a pitstop for a lot of people exercising in the Marina. The people here are friendly and seem genuinely interested in making sure you find what you're looking for, and not just trying to make a sale. They also have a 10% discount if you belong to a fitness club. They have a parking lot. I would liken this place to the Trader Joe's of sports equipment.
Just go here already and buy something!
My best friend was visiting from Chicago and I wanted to take her on a bike ride across the Golden Gate Bridge. After reading reviews of certain unnamed bike rental companies in Fisherman's Wharf, I was really sketched out by those places and decided to go w/Sports Basement instead which seemed ten thousand times more legit.
Sports Basement is easy to find and has a FREE PARKING LOT. Take that, Fisherman's Wharf. We went here after going to the Exploratorium, so it's practically just down the street. Parking spaces were abundant (we went at close to noon, I think). They gave us each really nice mountain bikes, helmets and a bag to hold our stuff on the back of the bike (w/no embarrassing logos). Then they wrote down my credit card number and sent us off with directions to the Bridge. They don't give you the maps that the Fisherman's Wharf places do, but even the people with those maps had no idea what they were doing. You just end up figuring it out.
The Sports Basement is practically at the entrance of the Golden Gate Bridge so we got there in just a few minutes. On the way back from Sausalito, we took the ferry to Pier 1, then took I think bus 1 and bus 43, and rode half a mile downhill to get back to Sports Basement. They charged us $20 for the day and gave me back the slip they wrote my credit card number on. You can't find anything cheaper. It was fast, easy, professional, and totally non sketchy. At the end of the day we got back into my car I left parked there safely all day, and drove home. I would highly recommend Sports Basement for bike rentals to anyone!
Wow! Sports Basement is my ultimate toy store. If you're into doing anything outdoors all seasons any sport and need some gear this is the place. Not only do they have a full stock merchandise and reasonable prices their customer service is top notch.
The staff seems to be well trained in the product they stock answering any question I have. This is especially true in the bicycle department where their quality and stock is quite expressive. Have a problem with your ride and need it checked out (even if you didn't buy it there as in my case) go see Matt in the service department. What ever the pay him it should be double. This guy is the guru mechanic for any bike. He solved my friends disk break problem and the clicking noise in my ride. This took about 25 minutes of his time but he charged us nothing. Adamant to fix our problems and get us back on ride.
I will always continue to bring my business back here. Snowboarding season right around the corner. Oh did I mention free yoga @ 11:00 am everyday. This store's Just gets it.
During the San Francisco coastal cleanup the owner hosted the gathering where we together spend a hard laboring three hours picking up trash and improving the community.
Afterwards he gave all participates 20% off to the volunteers and that gave me the chance to browse around.
This store is huge, it really is for being in the presido which has a large selection of sporting goods at fine prices.
If you happen to need equipment or want to go to one of the many instructional events her, it's worth the travel!
I hope my S.O. (REI) does not read this. Sports Basement and I hooked up about three years ago and I never been happier. Yes, I still visit REI whenver she calls to let me know about her 20% deals but it just aint the same. S.B has and offers oh so much. And now I don't have to travel to the City on "business" anymore, I can just shoot over to Sunnyvale for a quickie. Pssst... tell em' you're a GI and get 10% off. Sports Basement completes me.
Sports Basement is to a outdoorsman what a candy shop is to a fat kid. It has equipment for any type of sport or outdoor activity imaginable, plus super nice and knowledgeable staff to help you make the right selection. A lot of times when you go to stores like Best Buy or REI and ask for help, the sales associates don't really know what they're talking about; however, at Sports Basement, each section is full of subject matter experts. If you go to the triathlon section the sales associates are actually triathletes. If you go to the biking section the sales associates love to bike.
Besides being knowledgeable, the staff at Sports Basement is super friendly and they give great customer service. When I trained for the AIDS Lifecycle, Sports Basement was my go to place to get important gear, and sometimes free checkups on my bike. When I bought my northface camelback and the bladder started leaking, the sales associate upgraded my northface bladder to a platypus bladder free of charge!
Finally, if you have membership to any gym, you get an automatic 10% discount on everything just by showing your membership card. This place is great!!
Since Sports Basement opened it has been my first choice for active gear. Shoes, foam rollers, jackets, pants, snowboard, accessories, you name it, they got it.
If you need the SF uniform. North Face gear on jeans, you got your place here.
This is one of my favorite sporting goods / gear stores. The selection is huge and the price is better than most places plus you can get additional 10% discount with most gym membership cards or with coupons in tourist booklets (available at Fisherman's Wharf).
I've bought many things from here: tennis balls, fleece, sweat shirts, jackets, tennis shoes, socks, biking gears, etc. all at very reasonable prices. The service is also friendly and there's plenty of parking.
When I was there yesterday, they even helped me look up Pacific Puffs' address on the internet as I couldn't remember the exact name to get the address from information!
Tons of parking, great service, and huge selection. Prices are awesome too. Hate to be such a fanboy but absolutely have to be. Sports basement is local, awesome, and filled with great products. Forget the fucking Sports Authority or whatever that shitbox is called.
Oh, how I love Sports Basement... this is my story:
I purchased a new beach cruiser from Sports Basement about one year ago. The staff was knowledgeable, friendly, etc. etc. (expected, given the reviews...)
The reason why I'm compelled to give them 5 stars, one year later?
Unfortunately, my beautiful cruiser was stolen from my garage in the Marina about two months ago. I was heartbroken. Since then, I've moved to NYC and had considered my bike a "goner".
THEN, about 10 days ago, I received a call from Sports Basement. They had my cruiser! Apparently, the SFPD recovered my bike, returned it to Sports Basement, and then the Sports Basement crew matched the serial number to my original receipt. Basically, I had experienced a miracle!
I was so happy to hear that my bike was found! To top it off, the bike shop manager, Pedro, gave my bike a tuneup and shipped it to my NYC apartment (all expenses paid). Now that is AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE. The folks at the bike shop truly went above-and-beyond for me...
Thank you, Sports Basement! I can't wait to ride my CA Cruiser around Central Park this weekend. Phenomenal.
Huge selection, usually good prices, easy parking, friendly & knowledgeable staff - all and all, a great place to find reasonably priced every day gear.
Only issues are that they don't have the most high end gear (if that's what you're into), food items like Cliff Bars are for some reason overpriced, and the place can be a bit of a mess.
Note, you can get an extra 5-10% discount with most gym membership cards, athletic association cards, or even AAA.
Conveniently located only five minutes via bike away from where I live.. I love that this is where my riding group meets up for our rides into Marin. Its a quick hop over the GG bridge to hit up the Headlands - can you say hill repeats? or the scenic Paradise Loop ride.
But about the store, they have everything you need at excellent prices. The staff is extremely knowledgable and friendly as well.
Love SB! =)
Picture this...LOST in San Francisco in danger of driving across the Golden Gate Bridge when really all we want to do is bike across. My friend (an SF native) tried to find us a bike rental shop so we can make this dream a reality but to no avail. When all hope was lost, there it was clear as can be Sports Basement bike rentals!
Well we just had to check it out. In the very back, past the deli section, there was a bike rental shop. TOURISTS STOP NOW! You will get ripped off everywhere else. The rates were as follows:
$10 for 3 hours
$20 for the day
The staff was very kind and helpful. The gentleman who rented us the bikes gave us a map of where to go and how to get to the bridge. He also gave us a tutorial on how to use the gears. Given I was too excited to get going (and I also had a plane to catch) I learned all that on my own. Plus there was a nifty pack strapped onto the back of the bike to put all your personal belongings. Now if the guy says this is the easier way, Imma tell you right now there are inclines no matter which path you choose. Just one is steeper and that's the one to avoid. It took us 1 1/2 hours to 2 to bike across the bridge and back with plenty of stops for water and pictures. Use the restroom before you go!
One last note, professional bikers with their shammies on are not nice! So don't freak out when they yell and zip past you at record breaking speeds.
This 5-star update is for the bike dept. (once again!)
Looking for a new saddle but don't know where to begin?
These guys will install any saddle they have on your bike for free to try out for 30 days. If they don't have the saddle in stock, they'll call their other stores & hunt it down & have it for you in a day or two.
All you need to do is leave a credit card # with them and the rest is gravy. Pretty sweet!
(SFBC discount is good here. 10% off everything. woo-hoo!)

I'm upgrading these guys based on excellent bike service I got and for a cool free bike repair seminar they had which included some nice free beer. The repair guys really care about your bike and teaching you about what is going on and also are great about doing a lot of stuff gratis, like installing my old cassette, tire and tube on a new wheel I had to purchase. Cost is very reasonable for parts and service here. Along with the great selection of the rest of the store, this is an outstanding place for any sporting need.
In addition, in reading other yelp reviews, I found out about the AAA 10% discount which I had not known about. I brought in 2 recent receipts totaling $200 to them and they were happy to give me the discount after the fact with no hassle. Nice $20 bonus.

I was here yesterday for the Breast Cancer 3-Day Expo they were having at this location. I would give this place 5 stars but Holy Crap it was hard for me to find! I drove around for a good hour trying to find it and then finally did. If you are not familiar with this part of SF...plan ahead with good directions. I thought I did LOL!
This store is huge and has a really nice selection of camping gear, climbing gear, apparel and anything else you can think of that is sports or outdoors related. Staff is friendly too and things are easy to find.
You will find some sales on things and some items I found were cheaper then REI, Sports Authority or Mel Cotton's but other things I found to be more expensive so it just takes some researching between all of the stores to figure if SB is the right deal.
Another great thing...you can't beat free parking and a parking lot IN San Francisco! SCORE! So that is a huge plus. I probably will be back when I am in the area again.
Coming from Houston and Sports Authority/Academy, this place is huge and awesome. I just might call home and brag.
How have I not given props to my favorite fitness store ever? I love Sports Basement. I have to be careful every time I come here because I could easily spend far too much money. Why is it so awesome?
Location: I have a car so its no problem for me to get to the Presidio. They have a gigantic parking lot which is also a hot meeting spot for every workout group imaginable.
Store: What a great use of an existing structure. Being a disgruntled military veteran myself I hate anything that reminds me of my time in service. With the store layout and of course with the witty signs, I certainly don't feel like I am entering the commissary.
Selection: I seriously buy half my wardrobe here. Dressing down is a serious perk of working at home.
Staff: Fantastic. They know their stuff and are always willing to help. They tell you what you need and what you don't. I also love the people who work in the bike dept. who don't make me feel lame because I'm not some kind of rock star cyclist.
Community: The shopping parties rock, yea for 20% off with beer. I love the recycling efforts. I love the kids area. Basically I love Sports Basement, but I think you got that :)
peace, love, and good booze ~ chase
Trotted over here since we were checking out Crissy Field briefly today. I've been looking for capri running pants and have not been able to find any to my liking. They don't carry Nike stuff (don't like Nike running shoe anyhoos) but I found a nice pair of Saucony running capris with a small zipper pocket in the back. It fitted well and the pocket sold me. The style looks similiar to the capris the CAL football players wear with angled yellow stripes. All I need now is a helmet!

Lace up your shoes and cruise over to the Sports Basement while running along the beautiful SF Bay in the Golden Gate area. This place truly has everything a sports enthusiast would appreciate, especially your friends who are runners.
When you enter, it's obvious they grasp the idea of being "green" with all the recycled signs and shopping baskets (made out of cardboard and bungee cords!). This place was screaming eco-friendly from the entrance to the exit. They divided the store into outdoors and indoors activities. From camping to yoga, they had a huge selection with no pressure sales people. They carry items for men, women and kids.
Let's talk about the running supplies: excellent! They had a good selection of my Asics shoes including sale items. You can find a variety of brands including Sugoi, New Balance, Brooks, Champion and Asics. Because of the temperate weather in the Bay Area, they have many long sleeved items available. For me, I shop for tanks and skorts because of the environment I run in. Unfortunately, I found the perfect Asics skort but they didn't have my size. Apparently, they sell sample items from Asics that only come in medium. Oh wellz!
I wish I could have bought more stuff but my luggage situation was very limited. They also had good prices on Roxy and Volcom dresses which I love to wear back home. The men's department was impressive too.
They had the most extensive supplement and nutritional replacements I've ever seen. It was like entering Baskin Robbins with all the different flavors of electrolyte candies!
When I checked out I felt guilty asking for a bag because they are so environmentally conscience. I promise to recycle it until it falls apart! At the exit, they had a bin for used wine corks, Crocs and hangers.
For anyone in the area and has a specific interest in sports, stop by and check this place out. After visiting here, it made me want to go for a nice long run by the Pacific Ocean with my silver iPod, Asics and reflect about life.
Runners, on your mark, get set and go to Sports Basement!
I like gear. I am willing to give up hotness for the pleasure that gear affords.
Even better than gear is lo-cost gear in giant store with a disturbing sense of humor. I buy my sports bras under a giant sign that reads "milk." I have seen women complaining about this. No dice. Milk is here to stay. I have decided not to care one way or another, as long as I get functional sports bras on sale.
The best thing about this Sports Basement, however, is its location. I like to walk through the Presidio, pop out at Crissy field, have a juice and luna bar snack at Sports Basement, go for a jog, and then peruse their sale items before making the round trip.
Very cool, huge store with everything outdoors you can imagine and lots of helpful staff. I've been here twice, the second time only to use the bathroom but the first time I think they taught me everything I know about sleeping bags, which was not a lot at all when I first started!
You can stock up on just about everything from fishing and camping to hiking and even indoor sports. One con though, its so hard for me to find all the time, I always get lost trying to get here.
Other than REI, Sports Authority, and North Face, Sport Basement is one of the best, offering better deals and huge variety. Unless you're shopping it online, I'd assured you, most of the time, Sport Basement has better prices than online retailers and its local competitors. I have bought many things here because they are local and convenient. Why pay for shipping and why wait? You get it here and now!
I like to pay for items that offer the most reward. For example, my recent purchase of a North Face Hiking backpacking bag, I saw it online and love it! I found the same item at Sport Basement for $32 less. I even saved an extra 10% for mentioning I was a AAA member. 10% discounts are given for AAA members, gym members, and students.
Before that, I found a North Face Down- Vest 700, retailing for $150 and bought it here for $100. I didn't bother looking for it online but found out, it was still cheaper than online retailers.
The customer service reps are friendly and knowledgeable. FIVE STARS!
FYI: Don't buy the " never wash under-garments" I don't think it works. Believe me, you're better off wearing none. ; )
Favorite sports store ever, love the location under the bridge.
Got my last bicycle here, staff was super helpful, done several bike repairs other purchases as well - they have always been super nice and useful.
Low pressure, good prices, highly recmomend.
And they have parking!
I just got a harness yesterday for rock climbing and the person who helped me was very helpful ^^
It is always good to be helped by people who really know what he/she is talking about. It is even better when you are helped by someone who is really passionate about what he/she is selling. This person who helped me also does rock climbing and was very helpful to choose a harness. I am just a beginner, so it was nice to have someone who climbs often and knows what is best for a beginner climber like me.
I would give five stars, but couple of weeks before I went to this space, the other people who helped me were busy chatting, so it was actually hard for me to get help first. Besides from that, I enjoy shopping at hist Sports Basement.
The place is in a good location. I enjoy taking a walk going to this Sports Basement too ^^
