For fun, no frills, and friendly peeps in front of and behind the bar -COME HERE. I'd been meaning to check it out AND find the entrance way ever since Spoon (as the kids say) was suggested in my area. FINALLY, one night, I think it was a friday, we were on a mission: two Spoon virgins rollin through the parking lot searching for the light. The fellas at the door clearly spotting our confusion, pointed and gave us the nod which kinda helped. Anyways, we went in kinda early and positioned ourselves accordingly at the bar. Tom (Tommy as he was called by the end of our adventure) was more than hospitable, gave me the kinda drinks I wanted and for my friend, a better idea of what she likes. Her hint: "It's blue, like a popsicle". Oy. Again it was early and he was very nice but even as the crowd rolled in, it remained so. Shots came from the left and then from the right and not a single creeper or inappropriate ass grab came along with. Shout-out to ALL the good peeps! But then it was picture time! Our strip got jammed, but our dear TOM salvaged it, the frightening evidence of our night, and the faces in those pics, dear friends, meant we had to go.
Haven't been back since...we're both still detoxing, but our memories are fond...and accurate. :)
I love this place, and would love it even if I didn't work here. Honestly.
I come in on my nights off. I spend ridiculous amounts of money on the touch screen video game thing. I take $60 cab rides home, during which I spend time wishing I didn't work with such attractive people. I love it, and if I ever got fired, I would still come in, even if I had to wear one of those glasses/mustache disguises.
Am I biased? yes. Do i care? I most definitely do not.
Came here for a friend's birthday bash.
First impression as we approached the location on the GPS: Where the HELL is this place? Turns out that it is literally UNDERGROUND and you have to walk down to the bar entrance or park down there.. either/or. We couldn't see the place off the main road! Which isn't bad, but it isn't all that great either, but I guess they want to be one of those low-key bars.
It was CRACKIN.... only later to find out that 95% of the people there were for our friend's birthday haha...
Decor was very.... i don't even know the words except for: Black light, dim lights, interesting paintings on the back wall, photobooth, "RESTROOMS" spray painted in white on the wall which GLOWED because of the black light (which I thought was pretty awesome). It had an arrow at the end pointing towards the bathrooms lol
Drinks: I don't know if we were there on an OFF-BARTENDER night, but my 2 long islands were WEAK... Really not worth the... $11 per drink. One of them told me one total for 2 drinks, I gave him my $20 expecting more change, but he comes back saying that he gave me the wrong total and the real total was a few bucks more. You serious? Fine, whatever.
Music: The bartenders plugged in the ipod, and there were some pretty good tunes coming out of the speakers. A little bit of hip hop, energy... It was nice to bob your head to. Since I'm a fan of energy/high energy, I want a little bizerk when the energy music came on and started prancing around my boyfriend in my heels.
Security: Bouncer was nice enough to take a few HUGE group photo shots for us. Very cool...
Overall: I'd come back here if I wanted to do something low-key but have a couple (weak) cocktails with a few friends. It's a very low-key place, so if you're into something a bit more chill this is place. If you're looking to throw a party and not worry about a huge population (other than your party) being there, this is the spot.
I'll be drinking before coming in next time though if there is an event going down.

Thank God Walnut Creek has at least one hip bar! Excellent music, hip crowd, underground atmosphere. I wish I lived within walking distance, except then I'd live in a dodgy neighbourhood!
This place is really cool. I love their otterpop drinks. Taste just like a blue otterpop. This place is kind of tucked away but is a great find for drinks.
More of an underground urban feel lounge than your typical Walnut Creek places.
I had no idea that this place was still open. I loved it a few years back. I think I need to go back & re-rate!
I can sort of see why people saw this as similar to a Mission hipster bar, but if so it is an ugly cousin to those over the bridge. My complaints are as follows:
Lack of seating options, short people are not comfortable sitting on high barstools at high tables, EVER
We couldn't figure out how to control the playlist with our iPhone
The second I went into the bathroom I was so disgusted I had to leave that instant. Maybe it was some other chick's bad dinner, I don't know.
Only had one drink so I can't really comment on that. I did however enjoy teetering down the hill in four inch stilettos. Guess I should have read the reviews to know there was parking down there.
I'd go 3.5 stars too, but it's not an option. Since I saw someone else wanted to give it 3.5 and gave it 3, I felt I should balance out the rating. This place is cool, hip and fun.
I've lived here almost four years and pass by this place daily but just found out about Spoontonic. Everything everyone else says about the place is pretty true. I was told this was kind of San Francisco lounge-ish. There are a few lounge like accents, but this is unmistakably a bar. My buddy and I both felt the vibe was a lot like the bar in the movie Swingers-complete with beautiful babies.
The place was not crowded because we went on the 4th of July.
Nick is a great bartender and told us his favorite nights are Tuesdays when people come in with random challenges like elbow penny catching or staring contests for a chance to win a half price drink. Losers have to pay one and a half times the drink cost. Nick says he won't accept just any old challenge though. They even have uniforms for the challenges.
One cool thing if you own an iPhone is the ability to vote for songs and control what gets played. We didn't do this, but the music was good bar type stuff.
Decent pours.
Non douchey crowd.
Big smoking area.
The photo booth was being used a bunch.
One pinball machine and one tabletop (Donkey Kong?) were not getting any love.
Dirty bathrooms, but typical for a dive bar.
Definitely a cool place to come for a drink and chill. I'll go back.
This place is awful. The worst place ever. In the history of time. Not only is the epidomy of everything that is uncool, the bouncer took one look at my ID, which could not look anything more like me. I might as well have been wearing the exact outfit as I am in the picture, and this asshole has the nerve to tell me that I don't look enough like my ID to get in. Doesn't even ask me a damn thing about it. Just says nope, not happening.
My friend got in however, realized i wasn't there after like 2 minutes, and then said that the place totally sucked and was full of old people and wanted to go somewhere else.
1 star for you! you suck!

A typical dive bar with retro/funky flair.
Spoontonic was explained to me as a "hidden gem" and I must agree.
If you like dive bars, then check it out. The bar is dark with video games, funky (possibly local) artwork, a photo booth, and a black light.
The bartender was friendly and my crowd was able to be loud without getting any dirty looks.
What more can you ask for??

Bringing a little SF to Walnut Creek is never a bad thing and the new owenrs of Spoontonic are workin' on it. Great mixed drinks, great bar games, great bar tenders, and so much better than all the similar bars in the WC.
Nice job Nick!
Extremely hard to find. Spoontonic is really a diamond in the rough. Not a single sign in sight. The location is very sketch. If you see Napa auto parts.. drive down the driveway and park..you should see a white looking shack.
We got there a few minutes early so we stood at the front door until Jeff, our bartender welcomed us in. We all agree that a great bartender makes an awesome bar experience. Anyways, Jeff is a cool ass bartender. He chatted, drank, laughed, and even fed us pizza. I can't say that you will have the same experience because we were pretty much the only ones there at happy hour and therefore all the attention was on us.
Imbibed on cranberrry vodka x2, whiskey ginger x2, chilled Grey Goose, Jager bomb, Corona's, and tequila shots. Damn, just realized that is a crazy mix of alcohol. *__*
Nonetheless, we had a good time out. We will definetly be back boozing it up.

The name of this place is so cool. Spoon is a great word, as is tonic. Why not put them really close to each other?
I feel the same way about their cucumber cranberry cocktail. I don't remember what it's called, but it has cuke infused vodka and cranberry juice and it's so refreshing that you just want to have three more and run home and accomplish all your dreams.

$2 PBR's. Dice if you need them. Dimly lit. 2 urinals and a spacious washroom.
Entrance is on the back of an Indian restaurant. There is lots of parking, you just have to look on the other side of their parking lot.
I'm not really sure what else to say. If you like smoking, there's a lot of space outside to smoke.
Didn't have to wait too long at the bar to get drinks though it was full. Clientele was nice and easy going. Music was pretty loud.
If you're just looking to hang out and don't mind the pounding music, then this place might work for you.

Actually, I want to give it 3.5 stars. Not a bad place if you're looking for a different, more casual scene in Walnut Creek. It's hard to find. If you're looking for it, turn onto SOS drive, and park there. Then walk in the direction everyone is going.
I enjoyed the place because it wasn't crowded. Apparently, there was a party going on, and it's not usually as busy. Busy meaning, we had to wait to get a drink because it was 2 deep at the bar, where normally, there isn't enough people for a wait.
The scene is alright, it probably depends on what mood you're in. My friends were just looking for a chill place to chat and have a drink, which we were able to do in a less pretentious environment, and minus the college age kids that tend to invade WC.
NO BEERS ON TAP!?!?!?!?
Ok fine...I'll let that one slide because I did enjoy my bottled Stella.
This place is striving to be a hip chic ultra lounge but falls short as I notice the bubble gum blue painted walls a little too much between the sparse (local?) artwork. The bouncer was friendly at the door, no problems, no hassle. Both bartenders were nice...and the second one we spoke to was so nice that he gave us a free round of "his best shot" since the first bartender made us the most disgusting round of Washington Apples imaginable.
The atmosphere was chill, not too crowded, not weirdly empty on a Saturday night, and by last call there was still a good buzz in the place. The music was mostly an unnoticeable element in the background but stuck pretty near the classic rock genre.
In Summary: No cover, not the typical downtown walnut creek crowd, chill atmosphere, but NO BEER ON TAP!!
This is great, hidden, uptown, non Walnut Creek-ish bar. I was worried about it for a while because it was so hidden that people couldn't find it so they were never very busy. The upside of that was that there weren't a lot of 21 years olds getting wasted and throwing up all over the bathrooms and/or starting fights. It's definitely increased in popularity but when I have gone the patrons still seem laid back and cool.
I like their cucumber infused vodka and the speciality drinks that are made with it. It tastes like Bath and Body Works smells, which is delicious.
The photo booth is fun, especially after a few cucumber infused vodka drinks when it seems like a really fabulous idea. That can get expensive.

After reading some of the reviews I thought....well I gotta try.
I must have caught it on not such a good night, the place was almost empty, it was about 10, so I thought well it's probably early.
My honey and I sat down ordered a couple of drinks and judging by the name I expected to get a decent mixed drink. I didn't... it was so watered down, you know when your drink has been sitting there for a while and all the ice has melted and your drink becomes oh so boring, well that's what my cocktail tasted like. yuk!
I'm not too sure I'll go back for a second try.

If you can find it, you can have fun in it!
I took my wife, Jenn N. there a while back on a week night just to check it out. We've been trying to find a scene we like closer to home, since S.F. and Oakland are over 40 miles away. We just left Conga Lounge in Oakland and decided to stop by Spoontonic to see what it's about.
Yes, it's hard to find, but it's Walnut Creek. This place should be hard to find. Once you know to look for the little spoon sign and park any place close that you can find, it's no big deal. Parking will suck on busy nights.
Is this place cool? That's up to you and what you're looking for. I kinda dig this place cause it's unique. It's not a "city" bar, nor should it be. The vibe was sorta friendly. The drinks were not cheap, especially for a week night. The people were a mixed bag of the young and not-so-young. Seems like you will most likely always see someone sporting the Rockabilly, Rat-Rod look, but that's not all. Punk is accepted here too! To me, it seems like you can be whatever you want here, and that's cool to me.

Kick ass vibe, cool ass bouncer and neat ass drinks people talked me into trying.
First time ever I've given a bar 5 stars.

I'm reversing myself on my previous review for several reasons that become apparent when the bar gets full.
This was my first time seeing more than 50 people at the bar. 65% male crowd, good for you ladies out there. More than half of the few females were taken, so this would be a social visit for the male population.
The problem when the bar becomes full (optimal):
1) They turn the music down so low you can't even pick the band out the cacophony of conversations which are also difficult to hear, all do to low ceilings.
2) The bartenders are just scattered: slow on drinks, lots of wasted steps. Bartenders wasting time doing shots with customers. At one time 3 groups of people waited more than 10 minutes for a drink. It's unforgivable in my book for a bartender to make customers wait that long while they screw around.
3) They seem to ignore shorter (I'm taller) people and women on drink orders. It's a very odd choice.
While the bar is semi-empty, the low ceilings seem quaint and fun. When the bar fills up, the low ceilings acoustics along with the bartending shortcomings relegate this bar to little more than an overflow beer lounge to Walnut Creek, and not a place as a real alternative to mainstream bar hopping. The new Frat-boy patronage I'm sure will help the bar out. Is a big screen TV comming? Stay tunned, same bat-time, same bat-channel.....

I rarely go to bars. Other reviewers' comparisons to bars in SF are lost on me. So consider my opinion uninformed if you like, but I just plain like Spoontonic. The atmosphere is nice and Jeff is a crack bartender. I think alcohol in pretty vile tasting stuff in general, but Jeff knows how to make it go down with a smile.
Nice bar that's pretty impossible to notice if you're not looking for it. It's not your typical walnut creek crowd - more indie and very casual. The bar is usually not too crowded and bartenders are friendly. The decor is neat - lots of black lights, lava lamps, and art paintings on the walls that change every now and then. I was here last on Christmas Eve - the owner brought his dog in! He was sooo cute and friendly, greeted everyone :)
They have a photobooth and some old school video games (pacman and asteroids). It feels like a dive bar - awesome
This place probably would have garnered 5 stars, but the Photo Booth did not produce ANY photos the night I went! I was pretty bummed that I was not able to get my $3 worth, but the Shanghai Martinis made everything better. The Poison Apple was also pretty tasty.
The music was also a great bonus - as there was a little 80s, 90s, and now in the DJ's mix on Saturday night.
Hidden away behind SOS Dr., Spoontonic Lounge is definitively a pleasant escape from usual douchbaggurty of Walnut Creek night life. (Note: If you disagree with that last statement then stop reading now; This isn't the place for you.) Still here? Awesome. Let me tell you why you might like this place as much as I do.
The bouncer is a super chill guy. No dirty looks or trying to snap your ID in half while holding a UV ray.
The atmosphere is almost counterculture with its blacklight lighting, unpretentious decor, and awesome selection of punk, reggae, and class rock on the Jukebox!
The specially drinks are creative and tasty. They are just sweet enough that ladies you bring will have fun trying them all.
With that said, I can't give this awesome bar a perfect because when it does get too crowded.. It not that fun to hang out at. The service gets a bit slow and what makes the place cozy can quickly becomes cramped.
But for the most part this is the chillest lounge in WC. If you're from the area, you'd be foolish not to check this place out.

What to say about Spoontonic? I drank there during what could be called a "messy" part of my life which will definitely taint my review in some ways.
It's a very spacious place to drink with room to move on even the most crowded nights. The decor is pretty sparse except for the bad art that hangs on some nights. There's no real concept which is rare for WC.
The old arcade games and Photobooth are rad, but the jukebox is chronically abused by Journey and 90's hip hop enthusiasts. Drinks are strong but the beer selections is weeeeak. Bartenders are hit and miss depending on the night of the week. Rockabilly chick Lauren was/is? the indisputed star of this place.
Sadly, the whole of Walnut Creek has found out about this place and it's been overrun by the same douches and beezees who used to stick to downtown WC. Hopefully, Betty's draws some of these people back away and Spoontonic can regain some of it's quasi-divey vibe.

I feel this space in Walnut Creek has played an intregral part in who I am today. I spent my 20's there when it was called Kidder's; drinking Jim Beam and Coke, eating chinese food from upstairs, and recovering from the rave the night before.
As I have matured so has the space. Spoontonic is a great place to go get a cocktail after dinner and relax with your friends. The vibe is usually right and the drinks are decent.
Hey, maybe in a few decades it will be turned into a bingo hall where I will go with my geriactric friends for a big night out. Who knows?

Visiting friends in Walnut Creek, I was kinda dreading going to the bars where all the townies I went to high school with still hang out. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that we were going somewhere I had never heard of and was again surprised to see the reclusive Spoontonic when we pulled up.
This bar felt like a dirty little secret. A little bit dark and dank but with crazy blue lights that make your teeth glow and a location that is seriously hard to find. The bartender was pretty awesome and very attentive, but that could have been because there weren't that many people in the place. Lots of seating and good music, and a weird disco speakeasy type of vibe.
We closed the place, so obviously we had a good time. For a night out in Walnut Creek, not half bad.

I'm going to verify a lot of the other reviews on this place.
It's chill.
It's not too loud.
It's very blue.
It's an adventure to find.
I did not do a bewbie shot in the photobooth.
Tons of comfy, plush seating.
I felt very little eye f'ing in my direction, as I walked around.
Busy but not so crowded you feel clausterphobic.
I felt a little old but well, I'm getting a little old.
I love that the "Restrooms" sign is only visible under black light and the artwork is funky & fun.
I added an extra star for the hot assed woman who left right before me. I got to follow her all the way out. Let's just say: she was wearing a white spandex dress that was clinging to her in all the right places. Rawrrr.

kinda had a weird experience here. we walked in, and it seemed like the place had a really cool atmosphere until some random white guys started yelling at my friends and me. Not funny stuff, just random weird things like "do you like FX?" it was pretty empty for 11 on a saturday night, too.
anyway, we went to a booth in the back, sat down for like 2 minutes deciding what to do, and walked out of there. We went to Tiki Tom's instead and finished the night right.
Dunno if i'd come back

I love this place. I can't bring myself to call it a bar, because frankly, it is so much more than that.
Bars are what reside in the downtown Dub-C area. Disgusting, overpriced, meat market type places. Bars are where the HA's hang out...eeek! I don't want to get stabbed! Bars are also what you look at when you're in jail...or prison. Definitely not Spoon.
The owner and staff are super friendly, super nice people. They are not pompous jerks who pretend to know how to make a drink, but actually do! And if they don't, they will tell you! It's awesome, it's Cheers! When I walk in I expect everybody to say "Heeeyyyy" and I hear the Cheers theme music in my head! Besides, most of the staff does say hi, and it's genuine! Yippeeee! I don't go to bars or "lounges" or anything else on a regular basis, I never have. But this place, I would go here to drink water.
The Pear drop is good...the Flying Dutchman, oh yeah, it's good, but avoid it if you don't like coffee. And Felix makes a mean Kamikazi...I was never a fan, notice I said was...he changed that. :o)
A friend and I go there about once a week after work, and it is layed back and chill. The music on the weekends is a little loud, but it is a drink shack so I don't fault them for that. Tom and Felix are excellent bartenders, they keep their eyes open and the conversation moving. They are entertaining to watch and would do terrible downtown because they actually have personality!
The regulars, yes, I'm starting to recognize who is a regular, are quiet people who drink their drinks and have their conversations. I never feel like I'm being scanned for F!@$-ability! It's awesome.
If you are looking for a place to pick somebody up and take them home, don't bother coming here. It's not like that and hopefully it never will be. If you are super annoying and think you're super important when you have a couple drinks, don't bother coming here, you will ruin it! If you like to chill, enjoy your drinks and people watch (there is one guy that is super weird! but hilarious to watch/talk to) then this is the place to go.
And stop whining about actually having to look nice when you go out for drinks! Wear a collared shirt dude, it's not that hard!

Nice hidden spot in walnut creek. It's much more casual and the crowd isn't as pretentious as other places in the area. They have a cool happy hour and cucumber infused vodka! Lots of seating and good music. That's if you can find the place first!

I have been here twice and looking for a new happy hour place for my co-workers and we were DECEIVED!!! Online the photos make the place seem clean, open and modern and when I went it reminded me of a disastrous project of friend who painted his apartment in blues clues hues! There was glow in the dark streaks on the wall point towards the bathroom (gross) and they had a punk juke box that played Michael Jackson and some other odd choices in their collection.
The bar tender that I had was kind of useless and the happy hour selection was microscopic (three drinks to choose from!)

I got into a tremendous amount of trouble the last time I was at Spoontonic, but had a great deal of fun. The owner is super cool and makes a rather crazy cocktail using a type of vodka from Japan, with a cucumber garnish. I couldn't eat cucumbers for a long time after that...
Probably the hippest spot in Walnut Creek. I like that it's a bit hidden and hard to find....once inside it's nice and dark. Good place to go to with an old guy/girl friend.

This was my second stop on a night out in Walnut Creek. It was definitely a change of pace after having gone to 1515, which placed us from a bit more uppity to dive bar at Spoontonic and I would give it 3 1/2 stars.
Entering Spoontonic was cool. The bouncers were very cool, which does not happen everywhere I go to. I think they could tell we had been drinking and were only there to have some fun. It probably didn't hurt that we had more girls with us than guys. The setting was pretty chill and I always love a good jukebox. I really liked the vibe of this spot, everyone was just there to have a drink, chill out with friends, and listen to music. I orded a drink, a Hennessey and Coke, which the bartender messed up on and thought I seaid Gin instead of Henn, but after I tasted it, he instantly replaced it.
My only complaint of this place was the smell. After a day of drinking, this place didn't help with the smell. It smelled like gym socks and dried alcohol. Even with that smell I would probably go back there to hang out again, but I have to take away half a star for the smell.

so kinda a cool dive bar. ive been here about 5 or 6 times and half the times i went were cool the other not so much but i think thats just based on personal stuff and my mood at the time. The people here honestly seem kind of pretentious assholes to me. If you're going with a group of friends its cool but if you wanna mingle not so much. People are kinda clicky and all that. But i know i will go back for sure cuz it does beat many other bars in walnut creek.

When I lived in Walnut Creek, this place was my favorite bar to have a drink at. But now, I don't think I'll ever go back again. I just went to SF for vacation and decided to take my friend Jocelyn [see review below] there for a drink after a long day. I don't know if the bartender was new or something, but all 4 of us [3 being Spoontonic lovers] did not enjoy our drinks. All the drinks were watery and were lacking something. I really wanted my friend to love this place as much as I did, but I guess things have changed.
I'm really weary about giving Spoontonics a second change the next time I visit the Bay Area... But maybe... Just maybe I will...

I've only been inside once, I was turned away on a Saturday ("collar night" - collared shirts) after spending the day in the city. My first experience inside Spoontonic was amazing mainly because it's a lovely hole-in-the-wall, chill bar where there's no girls without bras taking body shots and trying desperately to find love. No, instead there was a cute Asian bartender (I kept pointing her out to my single friend) who made some killer drinks for my boyfriend, one of my girlfriends, and me. The bill didn't even end up being too much and we had a couple drinks each. We were there on an i-pod night; you bring your i-pod and they'll play the mix. The mix that night has some Belle and Sebastian and other indie goodies.
All-in-all: good music, good service, good drinks, no bar-scenesters = best bar I've been to so far!

Yeah...so...Spoons. Let me just start off by saying that I have to go here. I live in the area, I don't drive, and my townie friends like it.
Well, I don't. "Punk" night is sort of ridiculous. I can see where they're going with it, but a bar full of fauxhawks(a couple years too late) and skate shoes doesn't exactly drum up punk rock. They do occasionally sort through all the Green Day and Rancid to come up with a little gem now and then, but it's not enough to make me actually listen. The DJs need to be more adventurous and I love to hear more 70's/80's punk and hardcore.
I consider this place a necessary evil. This place is like Popscene in 2003...aka full of people a little late on the cool bandwagon.
Sorrryyyyyy. They do have some good looking dudes occasionally though. Dj? What? I didn't say anything.

My sister found this place, and I fell in love.
It has a certain vibe around it....there are some solid regulars, but there is no problem between newbies checking it out.
The white and black checkered floor with 50's garage stools, blue/black lighting and a photo booth.
Decent prices on the booze, which they sell a lot of. They even have PBR, which automatically gives it 4 stars.
Great for a late night drink with a date, you can snuggle up at one of the booths or come with a crowd.
