while a 'complete' lunch (main, drink + a sweet) can get very pricey very quickly, and despite a good-but-not-quite-as-good-as-it-can-be chicken with chipotle aioli sandwich (olive's down on prince st makes a better one), spoon/tbsp can definitely hold its own.
spoon/tbsp is a great place to grab a bite when you can treat yourself to lunch away from your desk and/or when you're meeting a friend to catch up over a quick bite.
spoon/tbsp is a nice replacement/alternative to city bakery (i caveat this, however, since i don't drink coffee)
p. i like staring at the varying shades of grey wallpaper opposite the counter
While I didn't eat anything here that could be eaten with a spoon, this eatery named Spoon made for quite a nice lunch today! Bustling when we entered, the cute farmhouse decor and chalkboard menu filled with fresh scrumptious options immediately got me excited. The sour server who took our orders at the counter dampened things a bit but nothing brings me down when a steak sandwich awaits.
The bread on the sandwich was a bit stale and dry and the caramelized onions were rare. I would've liked more meat as well, but a gal can't complain over a $8 steak sandwich in Manhattan. I tried the grilled chicken sandwich that had better bread but still had a dry taste to it. Miriam W. went with the Mexican salad that disappeared lickity split down to the last little bean. Next time I definitely want to try the Greek salad and maybe one of their soups. It's cute, there's counter service and while I wish the sandwiches were a bit fresher - the options are all delightful!
If you start coming here for lunch you won't stop. It's the best in Flatiron. Ample seating. Great soups. They have excellent spicy mac+cheese in the freezer- try it.
A nice flatiron option for lunch/brunch. Classic 'American' - BLT, eggs Benedict etc. Nice and light inside.
I've been having lunch from Spoon with my boss almost every monday for the past four and a half years and I love their food. Being kind of a scumbag myself, it's not the type of place I'd normally patronize, but since the ol' boss is paying I'll take it. She always gets me their cheese and tomato sandwich, black bean curry soups, some sort of desert, and a cup of black coffee.
She always brings us the food in a large brown paper bag and we talk about my weekend, which can get very uncomfortable. Instead of telling her that I got pilled up with Kyle and spent the weekend at the TipTop dancing to the wonderful sounds of Black Velvet and his kick ass soul band, I've invented an alternate life that revolves around dinner parties and doing homework. Kyle and I don't ever go to dinner parties. Ever.
The reason I'm including the part about inventing an alternate life is because the food at Spoon is so wonderful that it's totally worth inventing an alternative life just to have it every week. In fact, I'd do it for much less that a sandwich and some curry soup.
i love this place! they use real food; no additives. my fave sandwich is the provencal panini. i'm even going as far as saying it is the best sandwich i've ever had. oh, and the pumpkin pie- awesome! they also have good, properly-seasoned soup. i usually don't order soup, but here i do. all the other baked good are good too- pecan pie, brownie, pain au chocolat, various muffins. i can't say enough good stuff about this place.
spoon! you whore!
this is the sort of place that you can't just get ONE thing. they have good salads, good soup, good sandwiches, good hot platters, great breakfast sandwiches made with farm raised eggs, and great home made desserts.
plus good beverages and coffee selections.
so it's like, even though everything is moderately priced, i can't leave here without spending close to $15.00-$20.00 on lunch. sometimes more. and i'm not rich or anything. jesus. if i could get just one sandwich, i'd be fine...but those chips looks good...that soup smells good...are those brownies? is that a candy apple?!
i have bookmarked their website in my favorites on my work pc because they have daily specials which always sound delicious. but then i run over there and gawk at the food at hem & haw over what to order.
today i tried the banana pudding, a stewarts root beer, and some $10 salad made with lime chipotle marinated chicken, fresh corn, grated cheddar, chopped tomatoes and black beans on romaine with tortilla chips and chipotle dressing. everything was great. and i spent like, $15.00. they should rename this place "at least $15.00."
so spoon, you're a fucking whore. you're so plentiful and 'spensive and intoxicatingly good i have to come back for more, more, more. seduce me with your desserts. ensnare me with your sandwiches. bewitch me with your hot plattered specials. hypnotize me with your celestial teas and lattes. i am yours. whatever you have, however much you cost, i am yours.
Great variety, breakfast and lunch items, delicious coffee. Tried an espresso cupcake, beef lunch box (pastry pie), grilled chicken sandwich, and a coffee (yes, all at once, I was hungry!).
The food and coffee were great, the service wasn't so much -- but I walked out happy. Cute decor, unique and tasty items.
I have to admit, one of the reasons I went her was sheer convenience. It is extremely close one of the NYPL sites I had a day-long workshop at. Plus, it's December. So, being my second time in the area, and realizing at lunch time that I was kind of hungry and was going to eat, I figured I would give 'Spoon' a try.
The place is cute enough inside. I like all the cute little labels they put on everything. Still, it's nothing really special. Maybe I'm just building up a tolerance to cute New York places, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I got an Italian sandwich. They didn't make it for me. They pulled it out of a mini fridge from behind the counter. I couldn't help but notice that I was the only person they did this with, too. Maybe I should have just ordered something custom and been a little bit more difficult.
It was also kind of expensive for a sandwich, but it's not like I broke the bank or anything. I got some coffee to go with it. Which was... you guessed it! Pretty average! It was good that I went there because I was close by, and I would say "let's go there!" if I was in the area, but definitely not a place you should go out of your way to try. I can't speak to their catering service; maybe that's better than the actual little shop I went to. Someone in line told me they had really amazing cake.
I met my boss here for coffee and I started out by ordering an iced chai but I honestly hated it so then I got a latte. The latte was fine but nothing spectacular. The chai was made with real spices which for some might seem awesome and *authentic* but for me I prefer the packaged mix. My drink tasted like pure...cardamom? I was trying to figure out what I was drinking but really I just decided it was terrible. I didn't order any breakfast foods but they seemed a little expensive. There is ample seating so that's good and kinda rare for a breakfast shop.
I need to write an update here b/c Spoon expanded and grew into everything I hoped it would be. They bought the space next door, filled it with great old french country farm tables, and named it "Tablespoon".
Same great food, plus hot sandwiches and soups, and now a place to sit! They include all the little details, like fresh flowers on the table, and have great service. Or you can still just take out and eat at your desk!
Its great to have such a delicious lunch option, with something new and inventive (as opposed to another boring salad bar) every day.

This is a nice Flatiron option for a snack. They serve stumptown coffee which is really tasty. The staff is cool and friendly. They have good recommendations, so if you're indecisive like me, ask them for their opinion. I like the pastries they have...solid brownie and good scone options. I've also had their chicken salad for lunch which is good and fresh.
I work across the street and this place is GREAT.
Awesome pastries and coffees for breakfast and the salads, soups and sandwhiches are great at lunch.
The best is the grilled chicken...comes with some pecornio, almonds, and yellow raisins.
The girls can be a little gruff; but, they cheer up more they see you.
Spoon/tbsp started serving brunch recently and after the Daily Candy write-up, I had to check it out. It's really cute inside, with a very friendly staff.
I had the breakfast pizza and it was amazing - wonderful fresh tomatos, bacon, eggs and herbs.
And, needless to say, the Stumptown coffee was excellent too.
Excellent take-away spot for lunch, or just sit on the bench in front of the store. I ordered the tuna sandwich, which was mixed with red onions, capers, dill and mayonnaise on a wholegrain. I thought the ingredients all seem high quality here and very healthy, light with the mayo. Most sandwiches range $7 - $9 tuna, grilled steak, veggies, etc and most importantly there's desserts - muffins, scones, croissant, chocolate croissant, almond chocolate croissant and almond brioche all are priced right ranging from $1.25- $2.75.
Spoon may seem pricey to some but their service is great, and they "proudly and exclusively serve fair trade coffee", which in my heart is important. Small business supporting other small business globally - big props to Spoon.
RANTS & RAVES:
What is Fair Trade? Fair Trade ensures that farms receive fair prices for their goods ( i.e coffee in this case) and farming families benefit from education, healthcare, and housing. Fair trade goods was grown using sustainable methods including bird friendly, shade grown, and organic farming techniques protecting the environment.
Excellent take-away spot for lunches. I usually stick to the soup. For five bucks I get a good sized container - about a pint or so - plus a choice of a whole wheat roll or mini-baguette. There's always two or three to choose from, and the menu is quite varied. I rarely see the same item within a three week span.
The ingredients all seem to be very high quality here. The sandwiches are tasty & filling, though I've only tried a couple. $7 - $9 range for tuna, grilled steak, veggies, etc. There's also whole meals (grilled fish, chicken, etc.) that come with a couple sides, for about $8 - $10. Never tried those, though I should consider it. There's frilly little desserts - mini-cakes & pastries - they look tasty but again, I've never tried them.
I have to say, though the food is top notch, is it too much to ask for some semblance of recognition from the staff after going there at least two times a week for close to a year? They're very efficient, but not exactly the friendliest bunch.
"Spoon me up Scotty!"
World class pastries, excellent coffee, quik service.
I've not tried the sandwiches, they seem over priced for a pre-made sandwich. However Sandwiches go for half price after 4:30
Salads also seem small for the price so I don't know how good they are. Their soups are usually out of this world
Get a coffee card, buy 10 get one free.
Some of the pastries will make you cry out "Thank you Lord, I'm in Heaven right now", no it's just Spoon doing the right thing.

i heart the new expansion, cutely named "tablespoon" cause duh, there's finally a place to sit!
the expanded menu is great, although i wish they'd add a third soup. their prices have gone up a bit but it's still the best value in lunch in the neighborhood.
their daily entrees are always great, and they brew Mighty Leaf teas which are my fave.

On average, I get my lunch here at least 3 times a week. They send out a daily email that tells you what the sandos and soups are for the day, as well as what the special tasty snacks are and the hot entre, which is what I usually get. Anyway they prepare a light white fish is fantastic. Always tasty and interesting. Also, there chicken salad is divine.
A tasty lunch spot for pre-made sandwiches and soup...though come on guys how about a bit more variety in the soup section? How many people are really ordering that curry lentil thing? Their sandwich menu just completely changed, but I always dug the chicken sandwich and the proscuitto.
I grab lunch here most days of the week. It's the perfect antidote to fast food. I usually get a dessert whether I need it or not. Thanks, Spoon, for making me a fatass.
Spoon is right near my office, so it's my go-to for take-out. Good coffee and sandwiches. I usually get the procuitto baguette. Salads are filling and brownies are amazing. Try the melted chocolate cake tort thing.. I can't remember what it's called, but it comes in an individual tin. In the middle it's gooey chocolate that is so rich, it took me two days to finish it. Decadent.
The only minus is that it seems a little expensive, but whatever. It's good. Very friendly and cozy.
having just tried the lemon couscous this place is really friendly, adorable and yummy for lunch and a perfect walk from the office. would have liked to sit on the bench outside the store longer but didnt quite enjoy the view of the VIP lounge- a strip club I think.. also wish the place had some more seating.. but one day I'll have to try the watermelon sorbet!
