Best place to eat in town. Food is great, waitresses are awesome, and drinks are cheap!
The root beer and the burgers are absolutely killer, and the waffle fries are so tasty. -

Can you believe I grew up in Grayling and never once went to Spikes? I know, right?! So I was really excited to finally experience this local institution. And I was MORE than pleased.
The place is small and definitely looks worn but well-loved. The walls and booths are wood, so there are years and years of carvings in them (no, we didn't leave our mark). The bar has about eight seats, there are maybe four booths, and eight tables (approximating--I didn't count). They have a pool table, a few LCD TVs, a digital jukebox, and a coin-operated claw (crane) toy machine.
The menu was WAY more extensive than I thought it would be. I knew about their famous Spike Burgers, but I was thinking that was about all they had--or just a few typical "bar" type things. But they have a little bit of everything (including mexican, wraps, sandwiches, etc.). We got the fried pretzel app (with mustard and cheese) and it was tasty. Hubby ordered the All You Can Eat Fish Fry (VERY tasty) and I got the small Spike Burger (1/3#) with bacon and grilled onions (again, VERY tasty).
*A small word of warning: The burger can get a bit expensive once you add all the optional ingredients--cheese is 50c, grilled onions are 50c, bacon is 75c, guacamole is 75c, etc... so your "cheap" $5 burger can jump way up in price if you're not careful. It comes with potato chips, and any type of fries are also another $1.50.
That said, the overall prices are not bad at all. Our entire bill with tip was $30--and that included the appetizer, a Bloody Mary, my multi-topping burger, the fish dinner, and a pop.
The service was pretty good, as well...quick and friendly. It was also great not having to deal with the smoke. We didn't have our toddler with us, but a cursory glance for high chairs came up empty (though we didn't ask). We did see pretty much every age group there, though.
This is definitely a hidden gem in Grayling--which might explain why it took me 37 years to finally eat here! I do think that if we lived here, we'd be eating here at least once a week. So, its definitely worth a visit if you're passing through--or repeat visits if you're a local.
**NOTE--Since it is a bar, after 9pm, minors must be accompanied by an adult.Listed in: ROAD TRIPS!

Ah, Spikes Keg O Nails is the best place to stop if you're near Grayling, Michigan. The food is good, the atmosphere is laid back, and the beer is always flowing.
Spikes excels with their soup of the day. There are usually a couple of options to choose from, and the soups help raise this place above the usual "pub fare."
In fact, it's nice to see a bit of variety on the menu (from salads to Mexican fare) to help offer a little something for everyone. That said, though, I love the Spikeburger (usually with bacon, cheddar, and BBQ sauce) with an order of the waffle-cut fries. I mean, you're in a bar. You may as well enjoy one of the best burgers in Northern Michigan.
Tip: order your burger "medium-well." On a busy night, the cooks sometime go a bit fast with the orders and I've had some pink burgers when I ordered "medium." -

I came here during Day 2 of a 280 mile/3 day relay I was doing in Northern MI. My 8 teammates and I had a pretty tiring day and were STARVING. When we got here, they told us it would be a 45 minute wait. A couple of us sat at the bar while the rest of our team ran a few errands. They were obviously super busy so I wasn't expecting quick service, but the bartender was almost mean about how busy they were. She basically barked at us that she was busy and not to expect anything anytime soon. Seriously? I'm a waitress so I know it's stressful to be busy, but freaking relax. She was obviously going to make bank that night. By the time we got seated it was almost 9 PM and we had been up since 4:30 AM. This was our first meal of the day. We each ordered appetizers and some of us ordered more than one entree item. I ordered a soup, salad, and burger (which they are apparently famous for) with guacamole added. The best part of my meal was the salad. For $1.95 I got a reasonably sized salad with really good ranch and a little packet of croutons. Next was my cream of broccoli soup which was okay, but tasted like campbells and had big chunks of kind of gross ham in it. BTW, the appetizers took FOREVER to come out. Next came the burgers. The 7 guys I was with loved them, but I truthfully thought they were nothing special. Actually, I kind of just choked it down. The guac on the burger was good..probably not made there, but whatever. I thought the burger tasted a little bit like old meat. I was told it would come out medium, thought it was a bit overcooked, but whatever. Bottom line is I didn't think the burger was very good and certainly wouldn't order another. I opted for seasoned potato wedges and they were so greasy I chose to give my stomach a break and give them to my boyfriend.
Also. The bathroom is the smallest bathroom I have ever been in. I am 5'3'' and I could not comfortably sit down. My legs hit the door even with me sitting as far back as I could. just saying. -

My kind of place! Get the spike burger!! HAS to be the signature meal in a five county radius! Total bar atmosphere but we took the kids there and it worked fine. At least top 2 burger in Michigan!!!! We will be back!!!!

I'm a huge fan of Spike's! My husband and I have been coming here for 15 years now, and even stop in on our way downstate from visiting anywhere we end up in the north :) They are famous for their burgers, and they are yummy. The chicken wrap is delish too. Deep fried mac wedges... yum! The place really packs them in and I understand why. True, the bathrooms are small, but that add to the fun of it. Keep up the good work!

I recently had the chance to check out Spikes, I'm very happy with the service, food and decor. An older, bar style setting with a pretty neat history. We were greeted by friendly employees and were seated promptly. After ordering, the waitress told us that she had forgotten to put the order in so she made adjustments to the bill.
The food was great! Definitely recommend this one! -

5 stars for Spikes, thanks to the new Michigan no smoking law!! A huge fan of the black bean burger and waffle fries (honey mustard is the secret). A must go in Grayling.

On our girls weekend to Grayling, we stopped at Spike's for dinner before hitting the local bars. We were so glad we did. The food was awesome. I had a patty melt that was hands down the best I've had, and was complemented nicely with seasoned fries. The fish and chips were also very good. The have several 'Specialty' drinks. I tried the Mounds Bar. It tasted just like a liquid Mounds Bar. Yummy! I will definitely be stopping by the next time I am in Grayling.

I had cigarette smoke blown in my face while I was trying to enjoy my unfrozen black bean burger and good fries. Yea, lot's of character and probably not many better locally owned places in Grayling, but I wouldn't give it 5 stars or anything. The beer selection was not great.

Come see snowmobiling rednecks in their native environment while enjoying salty, cholesterol-rich food at the same time! Yippee!

Stopped in to Spike's for a quick lunch when I was in Grayling for business. Cool atmosphere, definite dive bar feel. I would have liked to have sat down and had 6 or 10 beers, but it was noon on a Tuesday so I went with a Spike burger. It was good. Not the best I've ever had, but certainly not the worst. I also had the deep fried pretzel app. That was really good! If I'm in Grayling again I'll definitely go back. I think I'd go back at dinner and have a few beers.

Best damn burger around!!! Killer Bloody Mary's and good cold beers. When you are up in the area you have to stop here and get a Spike Burger. It's just across the street from the fly shop and canoe livery. Everyone here is very chatty and personable. You will go away saying "I can't believe I ate the whole thing". http://www.spikes-gray...

Excellent burgers, cold beer and a friendly staff. It's a great place to grab a burger before heading out to the river.

Don't miss this place on you way through Grayling. It opened the day prohibition ended and has loads of charater. Not a typical tourist trap.
