April 15th, taxes were due, it was snowing and raining in Salt Lake, and being new to unemployment, I've found myself looking for things to occupy my time. I was hanging out at my girlfriend Kim's coffee shop with our friend Jadey (also unemployed and in need of entertainment) and we all decided it would be a good idea to go soak in the Homestead Crater after Kim was finished with work. The three of us grabbed a few things, hopped in my car, and off we went... into a blizzard.

After a very relaxing and much needed soak/swim in the crater, we felt the need to find a place to grab a drink to top off the evening. (Jadey and Kim have a place they always stop when heading to Lava Hot Springs, so this was not only appropriate but necessary.) Kim googled bars in Heber City on her phone and the name alone stood out enough for us to find The Spicy Lady.

We visited during Mud Season, and entered the quiet saloon and were promptly greeted by Jai, the owner. The three of us chose to sit at the bar and Jadey quickly wandered off to admire the amazing artwork on the walls as Kim and I discussed coffee and espresso with a man (Jai) holding as much knowledge and preference on the topic as the two of us. Eventually we ordered a stein each of various draft beers, and later 3 appetizers as we weren't so much looking for a meal than a bite. We ordered Lady Fries, Dutch Bitter Balls (Jai's grandmother's recipe), and Kangaroo Quesadilla (noted as an accidental creation in the menu, but definitely not an accident to order). Delicious! I personally liked the quesadilla best. Having never before consumed kangaroo meat, I wasn't sure what to expect, but the description on the menu dissolved any hesitations I may have had.

We finished our visit with a pair of dirty martinis and a taste of Jai's homemade Tiramisu. Our evening couldn't have been more pleasant. We plan to go back next week to try the Gnocchi in a Creamy Gorgonzola Sauce before it disappears from the menu for the summer. Oh, and I'll be having some of Jai's Cheesecake as well.

I highly recommend everyone make a trip to Heber just to visit the Spicy Lady. I'll be making it a priority to work it into my travel plans when I go to see my family in Colorado.

"May I have a wine glass?" my friend David asked the slick-looking guy we took to be the owner,  an asian man with a smooth British accent working an old-fashioned saloon in Utah. They both gazed down at the small tumbler holding his Spanish tempranillo ($6.95).
"That IS a wine glass," said the owner.  "It's an Italian peasant glass."

Ah.  A tumbler by any other name....

Not to quarrel, but there actually IS some logic to the design of the wine glass, particularly for a red, and when someone asks for one specifically, it is certainly reasonable to provide one, rather than a smart-ass comment. It may very well be that the little tumbler was some sort of wine glass, however, considering the bizarre choices of other dinnerware at the Spicy Lady, this glass was a very poor choice.

The food communicated the same sort of confusion as the owner did.  Each dish was a nice try, but fell well short of the target, particularly considering the upscale pricing.  I could do a detailed critique of each dish, but it's really not worth the effort.  If after reading this far, you're still hungering for the details, I'd be happy to fill you in.

The interior of this place is great and the atmosphere would have been excellent had it not been for the owner sitting a few feet away, facing us and working on his laptop during most of our dinner.

All in all a reasonable effort that can easily be characterized by these words: eager but inept.

We decided to take the scenic route from Park City, UT to Kamas through Heber back to Park City. I checked Yelp to find a place for dinner before we got to Heber and found the Spicy Lady.

We ordered the Chicken Marsala, Tuna Steak, kid's mac n cheese and burger, and the salmon. Although I didn't order the glazed salmon, it was the best dish with a taste I'd never experienced before. Then we finished it all off with the Bread Pudding (not on the menu), literally... if we could have licked the plate clean, we would have.

The atmosphere inside and out was very antique saloon, and the owner was great to talk with. He was even kind enough to give my other 2 kids their own servings of that awesome mac n cheese.

If you're ever in Utah, you really need to try this great place!

The Spicy Lady has become my favorite local restaurant. The historic saloon decor is casual and comfortable, and the food equals any high-brow restaurant I've seen. Last night I had the opportunity to sit with my iced tea in the new outdoor area (the tables are still on the way and there was only one bench, but I couldn't wait to chat outdoors at sunset).

This is the perfect stop for car or biker weekend rides through the back of the Wasatch. I always recommend stopping to my friends after skiing or golfing at Soldier Hollow.

I had the most delicious dinner at the Spicy Lady in Heber City. I could not stop eating or ordering.
First I started with the Firecracker Shrimp appetizer which was shrimp partially wrapped in spring-roll paper, then the warm bacon spinach salad. It was great. Be sure and ask for the Chai tea hot it complimented my entire meal. I then asked for an item off the menu which the owner graciously allowed me to order for my main course: The Juicy Lucy cheeseburger with fries. I kept to my diet and ordered it without a bun. My partner ordered the Norwegian Glazed Salmon which she ate and loved and then picked at my meal items. I loved the historical building and saloon, wooden floors etc. Wine, beer and cocktails  are available to compliment your meal.

New restaurant in Heber.  I've had to spend a lot of time in Heber lately and Spicy Lady was recommended to me by a local.   My review is based on one lunch visit.  This is a Great space, worth a visit just to see the rooms.  Its one of the oldest buildings in Heber and as you enter, you will note the wood floors, the remarkable bar and mirror behind the bar, a real cowboy saloon feel.   The food is certainly not greasy spoon cowboy fare, oh no.  They describe it as "peasant" food, comfort food from around the world, and I say YUMMMM, mouthwatering is the word.  I had a tandoori panini and will be hard pressed NOT to have that again, it was delicious.   It was served with a small, fresh salad and one of the stars on my plate, besides the panini, was their au gratin potatoes.  OH WOW, cheesey, yummy potatoes, and I'm thinking there might have been some sweet potatoes in there with the regular potatoes.   I think these were the BEST au gratin potatoes I have ever eaten.

Say hi to owner Jai when you're there, he's present and checking to make sure your meal experience is a good one.  I had excellent service, and enjoyed my meal there.

Minus one (picky) star - only because I don't like their new, higher height tables and chairs.  They did have the more traditional lower tables and chairs in the back room.   I noted that all the "dining people" seemed to have chosen to eat at the back, at the normal height tables, and the coffee, hang-out-people were at the front at the high tables and chairs.  There's nice light coming in from the front windows, and I wanted to be up front, but just don't like eating at those tall tables.  To be very honest, the prices were just a teensy bit high for this thrifty girl, for lunch, but I do admit readily that the food was creative, high quailty and delicious.  I'd return for the same meal anytime, but also want to try their homemade meat pies.

Be sure to see the adorable restrooms, nice decorating!  Live music on Friday and Saturday night.

Great restaurant! I've been there for both breakfast and lunch and was impressed by the food and friendly service. Loved the roasted red pepper soup, hummus with pita chips, waffles... You can also get a superb cappuccino there! The decor is worth a visit on its own - you feel like you've traveled in time and walked into an Old West saloon.

Go there, you will love it!

we had a wonderful experience at the spicy lady last month!  4 of us enjoyed and shared a delicious combination of lamb shank, carbonara pasta and two of us had the pork medallions which were all yummy.  the best part was the time we spent kibbitzing with jai, the owner.  the building is lovingly renovated with all types of cool touches and beautiful stained glass that looks old and appropriate.  we were on our way to hang out in the mineral pools at homestead and this was a great way to start our evening.  check out the cool pic of jai!
