This place totally hit the spot. I remember getting take-out from here a looong time ago. This time, we dined in and it was a fantastic meal!!
I always get Thai Iced Tea when dining at Thai places. So unoriginal I know, but if you can't get this right it's just sad. This one didn't disappoint. It was sweet, as Thai Iced tea is meant to be, but not sickeningly sweet. Even my bf who doesn't care much for sweet things, liked it.
We ordered the crispy Thai spring rolls, spicy chili halibut, spicy grilled shrimp, and red curry with steamed tofu. Everything we had was flavorful. I really enjoy lemon grass, ginger, lime, and garlic. They're a great combination of flavors. I should eat Thai more often. I'm actually craving it right now!Listed in: The Bestest, My Future Home - San Diego

You have to love Yelp. When a place has over 250 reviews and is rated 4 stars, you just know the place is going to be delicious. I trusted this fact and hoofed it from North County San Diego to La Jolla to try out Spice and Rice Thai Kitchen.
Located in the Village in La Jolla, Spice and Rice Thai Kitchen is easy to find. Parking is street parking and can be a little bit of a challenge depending on when you go so bring your patience with you. On the Saturday night we went, we virtually had no problem and was able to park about 100 feet from the restaurant.
Seating is available inside or out and heat lamps are available. We opted for inside dining due to the cool conditions that evening.
The menu is your standard Thai fare with a few out of the ordinary choices as well as some unique infused dishes. Overall, a great choice and a simple and easy menu to choose and order from. Tonight I had the Chicken Satay, Black Pepper Beef, Yellow Curry Chicken, Thai Rice and a Basil Chicken. All of the food was fresh, served hot and absolutely delicious. Ton's of flavor and got the medium heat right.
There is nothing worse than going to a place like this and asking for medium heat in your food (#5) on the 1-10 scale and their 5 is like a 9. Spice was perfect. The service was equally terrific. No wait for the table and the waiter and other staff were quick with waters, drink refills, the meal and checking on us for anything we needed.
Terrific dining experience, awesome Thai food and the prices were just right, considering this place is located in one of the highest rent districts of La Jolla. For us, it was well worth the drive.
Enjoy! -

I gave this restaurant another try and came back there a few months later with an even bigger group of people (I mean 20 people this time).
Well, it was Friday night. They already had our table set and ready.
They took our order promptly; and the food came out pretty quickly after we ordered.
Many curry items are spicy, so I had ask for a non-spicy one. Hmm... it was practically a coconut milk instead of a curry, but I still liked it a lot.
I finally appreciated how nicely they decorated this place. It is neat, and yet very cozy and romantic. Plus, it's in my favorite La Jolla :)
They could only give us 3 separate checks for 20 people, so that was inconvenient.
Overall, the wait staff did not give us much attention. They did the bare minimum to accommodate us. And so I'm giving them the bare minimum of 3 stars!Listed in: For when I crave curry...

I like this place! It's so pretty hehe definitely a good place to go for a date and it's often crawling with couples. The food is good and the service is good too! I've tried a few dishes and they were all yummy although the pad see ew was once a bit too sweet heh. Ooh and their spicy food isn't really that spicy and they don't have spicy levels, but you can always ask them to make their dishes extra spicy and they'll gladly do so! Only thing I don't like is the street parking but I never really had trouble finding parking.

Good quality, a little on the small side with portions.
Pretty layout out of the plate.
Lemon grass soup is the bomb here.
Curry is pretty OK and pad thai is average.
Outside seating. Good ambiance.
Street parking in downtown la jolla. Sometimes hard to fine.
Good service. -

This place is amazing for dinner, has out door seating with heaters. It is also located very well for a good evening. It is close to La Jolla coves, so one could go for a good evening walk / stroll and finish off the great evening with dinner here. The food is amazing. I ordered the cashew nut curry, panang curry, thai basil fried rice on my various trips to this place. All of them were very good.
The ambiance of the place is also nice, good lighting, the waiters are good, polite and serve well. It is easy to find a waiter if you need one. The outdoor is seating is the icing on the cake. In San Diego weather it is fantastic to sit out under the heaters and have a good meal, feels nice and a fantastic way to finish off the night.
All in all, good place for dinner. I have never been here for lunch. -

Oh Spice & Rice, how I want to leave you a good review. Had it not been for the toilet run, quickly following our visit to you, you would have had it.
My fiance and I were in the area a few weeks ago doing some errands and decided to stop in for dinner. Very nice layout, 1/2 outdoors, 1/2 indoors. The menu had some of the typical dishes you'd expect to find in most Thai restaurants. It was chilly so I wanted to start with a Tom Yum soup, one of my faves! It tasted wonderful, but a tad "fishy" and had a bit too much of a "fishy" smell. We opted with the red curry and cashew chicken for dinner. I very much enjoyed my curry, but the hubby to be wasn't nearly as satisfied with his.
About an hour later as we were driving home, I started to get that no so good rumbling in the tummy feel. Uh oh, uh babe, I'm not feeling too good. At least we didn't live too far away and made it home safely before I had spend a small portion of my next hour, um, let's say "reading" in the bathroom. I knew it had to be the soup. I was so disappointed. I had really enjoyed the food. -

Not my favorite place, but it's still pretty good. The weather was gorgeous so we sat in the outdoor patio area. Service is 1 star. Food is 3.5 stars.
We sat down and probably had to wait at least 5 minutes until we were greeted by a server (who only came back once throughout our 90 minute lunch there).
Lunch specials aren't as cheap as most Thai restaurants. Lunch specials ranged from $9.95 if you got chicken, to $10.95 for beef or pork or $11.95 if you got shrimp or squid. Lunch specials come with soup or salad, an appetizer (2 curry wontons) and a scoop of jasmine rice (brown rice $1 extra).
I ordered the panang curry and it was splendid. The curry sauce was a perfect consistency. The green beans and red bell peppers were cripsy; not overcooked. The beef was tender and very flavorful. This is a hearty portion and It was worth the $10.95.
My friend ordered the Pad Thai and it was pretty good. I think it could have been more flavorful but it was pretty standard fare. The spicy basil fried rice also looked very good and was a large serving.
I'm sure I'll venture back here soon enough, but I hope the service shapes up! -

Great Thai Food. We got there an hour before the end of their lunch service. The Thai Ice Coffee was okay but the Thai Ice Tea was really good, somewhat sweet yet very flavorful. The Spicy Basil Noodles -$10 - were delicious. The Woon-Sen Noodles - $10 - were also delicious.
This is a place to try or try again.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I don't dislike this place, but I'm not a huge fan of it either. I assume that because it's located on Girard, one of the main streets in La Jolla, the rent is probably pretty pricey.. so they hike up the prices on their food?? In all honesty, it's not worth the price you're paying. You're paying for the location... and boy, I love this area.
I remember my first time visiting "downtown" La Jolla. Everything was just so elegant, chic, classy. It's such an awesome place for an intimate date or just a friendly stroll along La Jolla Cove. One day, we were craving Thai food around dinner time, so we decided to hop in here.
The panang curry is pretty good. I always have to have a serving of tom yum soup every time I eat at a Thai restaurant too, and theirs was okay. My friend and I shared the ginger entree, and all you could taste was the ginger. It totally overpowered everything else that was in that dish - not my favorite. I like ginger, but not THAT much of it.
LIKES
- lunch specials (comes with soup, salad, and a deep fried curry pouch)
- semi-outdoor seating area.. I love sitting here for lunch.. very quiet and intimate
- service is always very friendly and prompt
- gotta love the Thai tea too
Overall, I like this place for the location. Maybe not my first choice for Thai food, but it's decent, and it's one of the few Thai restaurants in La Jolla. -
Review from Yasmin C.
Not quite up to par with my favorite Thai restaurant in San Diego, Sab-E-Lee...but a pretty damn good alternative (and closer!). Our party of six had reserved a table in advance for Sunday Labor Day weekend dinner, and we all loved it!
My spicy basil noodles with chicken were yummy and thoroughly satisfying...I asked how spicy the "spicy" would be and was told that it was "medium," so I asked for more! Now, spicy in my world means that by the end of the meal my eyes are watering, nose is running, and body temp is up. No such experience here...but tasty nonetheless.
I also sampled the panang curry with duck and the chicken pad thai...both great, and the duck in particular was pretty fabulous. So fabulous that I may order it next time I'm here :)
For a Sunday night (albeit, on a holiday weekend), the place was pretty packed. I actually felt bad that we monopolized our table for two and a half hours when I noticed people waiting for tables on our way out. Seems to be a popular spot, understandably! I will be back, ready to eat duck or maybe to try something new! -

Spice and Rice is a cute and tasty Thai place. LOVE the panang curry, the summer rolls (fresh, not fried), and the eggplant with basil.
They have yummy Thai iced tea also, which is a great addition to a spicy curry. Prices are reasonable for Thai food, and very reasonable for downtown la Jolla. My fiance and I are thinking about doing our rehearsal dinner here :)
Only downside: they are bad about answering the phone, so trying to make reservations can be stressful. -

This is one of the best Thai places I have eaten at! And never expected to find this in La Jolla. But am glad I visited here.
Excellent ambience, slightly pricey menu, but totally worth it, so thats what matters. The spicy basil fish is awesome, as are the rest of the dishes. Will love to visit San Diego just to eat here... -

3.5 stars.
I came here for lunch on a sunny day. Not the most authentic, but I think the food is tasty and the service is prompt and attentive. And given that its locale, the prices are reasonable! I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but if I'm in the area, I'd probably eat here over the other restaurants in downtown La Jolla. -

I went here for dinner one night for a special occasion. It wasn't my favorite place, but it still had its attributes.
It has outside seating which I preferred that night, but the decor was just beautiful! There were flowers artfully placed along the walls. The place was lit with candles and had a water fountain in the center which just added to the intimacy.
Food wise, it was alright, I got a Thai iced tea which was delicious, chicken satay as an appetizer, and pad thai with chicken for dinner. Presentation was plain and simple, very tasteful. The food was good, but didn't stand out to me from any other Thai food places I've been to. For it's price, it's a good meal.
I actually was distracted by the table next to use because their food was served inside of a carved out pineapple! My food on white plates paled in comparison. Next time I go, I'll take whatever was in that pineapple.
Service is pretty attentive and friendly. Whenever the candle on our table went out a waiter was there to relight it.
This place is good for dates just to stare into somebody's eyes or for business meals if you're trying to impress clientele. -

This is my favorite Thai restaurant in San Diego. I love the outdoor seating with the water fountain. The service is always great and quick. They allow dogs on the patio.
I really enjoy their lunch specials and like to go there during lunch. Their lunch specials are smaller portions that come with golden moons (curry and potato filled fried wontons that are delicious) and the choice of either a soup or a salad. The soup is good which is usually chicken noodle soup or tom yum soup. However, salad is kind of disapointing. It is shredded cabbage in a sweet dressing that comes in a small cup.
My favorite dishes are their curries and the spicy basil noodles. They have many options. Their dishes are very spicy. They don't ask you how spicy you want your food so if you dont like spicy you have to make sure you tell them you want your dish mild. -

came here late on a friday night. not much is open late in La Jolla at night time!!!
Tom kha ga. Shrimp n coconut milk sour soup. yummy soup.
Panang curry duck with eggplant- tasty dish. the eggplant was a bit overcooked though.
Brown rice was good too. -
Review from Robert F.
A nice location and ambience, since most of the time thai food can be great from a hole in the wall. I like the summer spring rolls, the Tom Yum soup, the panang curry and the spicy basil noodles. I think the service is good here too, reminding me of traveling in Thailand, they wait near the edge of table just in case you might need anything.

Enjoy this location! I'm addicted to the red curry duck! The only factor is you have to be seated on the covered patio. It is beautifully decorated with tropical plants and also a fountain and attractive brick work. The inside is like a distinct restaurant -- outdated and uninteresting. My only beef is that they make you pay for added rice, and they by no means provide you with enough. Go here!!

I really do not like Thai food, but my roommates love this place so I figured I would give it a chance. We arrived and the atmosphere was really nice; they had both outside and inside seating with enough lighting in the inside so I could actually read the menu. The service was pretty quick in getting our drink orders in and taking our meal orders.
I was looking at what I should get and decided on the most non-Thai food there was which was the spicy Thai Halibut. The fish was kind of flavorless and slightly dry itself. What saved the dish was the sauce that smothered the vegetables.
The whole meal came out to be around $18. The waitress seemed to forget about us when we just wanted to pay and leave so we just sat there for an extra ten minutes until we waived her down. I think I will just take my money and eat somewhere else next time where their food might be slightly better for a better price. -

Unconventional and superbly prepared dishes make this a great Thai restaurant to visit in La Jolla Village. We ordered a halibut with grilled vegetables in a not-too-hot chili sauce, and curry fried rice with scallops that was spiced "just right" (each $13.95).
One may choose from quiet and elegant patio seating to a somewhat louder indoor environment with booths and tables. Attentive and efficient staff. -

Finding good Thai food in the San Diego area is a difficult task but this place gets my seal of approval. The first time I went here me and my friend ordered the Spicy Noodles and green curry. It was super super tasty. The food seems to have a modern spin so it stays true to the original dish but still has some character to it. Love it! The best part was dessert though...homemade coconut ice cream with pineapple. Simply delicious.
Went for lunch about a month later and tried the same dish...it wasn't quite as good as the first time but it was still pretty great considering the other options around here. i highly recommend! -

I feel that it's highly inadequate of me to review a place even though I've only tried one dish there. However, I can't help but boost the popularity of this place. It's delicious.
As a UCSD student, I need something better than dining halls to fulfill my palate. So one night, when my friend suggested Spice and Rice, I merely said yes and trusted his expertise.
When I entered this restaurant, there was this haunting feeling over me. This feels like a date. The ambiance and arrangement of the tables sends off an eerily couple joint, fueled with the fact that all around us were only couples.
I ordered the pad see ew, and I STRONGLY support it here. It was one of the best that I've had here, compared to thai gulf. He ordered the curry panang, which I had a piece of the chicken of.
The only reason I chose to give them four stars was bc I haven't tried more than one dish. ;] but DEF recommended!! -

I come here quite often and like some yelpers have mixed feelings. Most of their food's flavor can be described as delicate. Nothing is too strong - for better or worse. I've ordered the pad thai (pretty good but yes the chicken pieces are too big), the red, panang, and yellow curries which are all good but not fantastic, and the veggie stir frys.
The two stand out items are the fresh spring rolls which are HUGE and the mango stick rice which is absolutely delicious.
The staff is very attentive and the decor/ambiance is great. -

Can I say "meh"? Went here on a Saturday night and was surprisingly lucky to find parking easily. Decided to order one of the house specials, the fried chicken with red curry sauce.
First red flag - no one asks you the spice level! So they just give you the default that they think is right for you. Mine was about ok, but I would've definitely preferred a notch spicier. Now to the bad part - the chicken. Or should I call it Five chicken gum??
It was terrible - no two ways about it. Chewy, totally dry and stringy. To top it off, I wasn't even given a knife, so there i was trying to break chunks of bone dry chicken with my fork or my teeth looking like a complete idiot.
I don't see myself going here again. -
Review from KaThy T.
My friend got the sweet basil thai noodle dish, the one with the thick rice noodles. It came with bell peppers and chicken. Not bad, but also not great. I got the pad thai. I usually avoid noodles, but the last time I went to a Thai place, my curry sucked and my sister's pad thai was good. This time, it was alright. Our dishes were pretty plain. We added hot sauce to make it a bit more flavorful.
The service here was good. The environment was nice, also.
I wouldn't mind coming back again to try out the other dishes. This place seems to be popular, considering the amount of people who came in when it opened at 5pm for dinner. -

We visited twice while on vacation in the area. 3 out of 4 family members are vegetarian, and we found plenty of options. They do a great job with tofu, which is really saying something :)
We enjoyed spicy thai fried rice, panang curry, spicy basil noodles, cashew nut curry, & pad thai. Not a bad dish in the bunch. -
Review from Camilo G.
Even though I've been to this place twice, I've left satisfied. My most recent experience was for lunch during a weekday. They have lunch specials so some friends and I decided to give it a try and share of each other's plates.
We ordered some soup and calamari appetizers to start off the lunch. The calamari was very crispy and full of flavor. The soup was A-Ok, had the flavor but most of it was broth, not enough veggies or whatever else is supposed to go in there.
The lunch dishes had what seemed to be small portions but after the appetizers and sharing of each others food we were pretty full. My favorite was the red curry chicken. The pad-thai was A-Ok, nothing special but still good. I think this is a very Americanized Thai restaurant but it still tastes great, not as authentic as the Thai restaurants in LA. Each lunch combo also brings a couple of dumplings which are really good too. -

I love this restaurant mostly for its consistently delicious Thai food. I feel it is pretty reasonably priced considering it's in downtown La Jolla and the portions they give. I've always gotten the Chicken Pad See Ew and would for sure recommend it.
And since this is probably the closest Thai place to UCSD campus (Hi Thai is definitely NOT an option for good Thai food) Spice and Rice gets 5 stars :) -

Got some food to go while out and about in La Jolla. The hubby and I were actually wating for Tabu to open next door, but at 11:30am they still hadn't opened their doors for lunch. So we decided to try this place out.
The restaurant is acutally very cute with some nice outdoor seating. Pretty excited with all the awards they had hung up. We ordered the calamari and spicy thai fried rice. Rice was okay, forgot to mention spicy level but figured it would be decent-- I prefer things pretty spicy so i t was just mediocre to me. The calmari was bleh. I really dont know why restaurants do calamari strips instead of cutting up rings and tentacles. It was pretty chewy.. if I had known that I probably wouldnt have ordered it. Overall it satisfied my craving for lunch but probably won't be comning back. -

First Yelping!
Been here before, and I've always left happy. This time, took a new transplant from the right coast to CA here. Long wait, but worth it.
Thai Iced Tea was just right. Steamed Mussels were awesome.
The three of us ordered the Honey Glazed Duck, Panang Curry, and the Basil Duck. All were tremendous, but the Honey Glazed Duck was the best of the night.
Would always come back if in the area. -
Review from Ritz D.
My girlfriend and I went shopping at the pet shop nearby and were looking for a place to eat. We were supposed to try out Sipz but we decided on somewhere closer where we could eat while we waited for traffic to die. Across the street we see a banner that says something along the lines of "Best Thai Food in San Diego." We love Thai food so we were drawn there like a moth to a flame. 45 minutes later...damn, I wish we went to Sipz.
Upon other recommendations, we order Spicy Basil Noodles, Spring Rolls, and some shrimp and veggie thing in peanut sauce. The first few bites of the noodles were great. I initially liked the spice and the flavor of the vegetables but then all I started to taste was pepper, so it became spicy pepper noodles. In the second dish, the ratio of shrimp to veggies was terrible. There were like five pieces of shrimp and then vegetables and clumpy peanut sauce and the shrimp wasn't even that good. At least the rolls were decent. I have eaten at extremely cheaper Thai places where the food has been more flavorful. For the price of the meal, I was expecting something much better. -
Review from Hanna H.
Possibly the best Thai food I've had! I'm normally not a fan of pad thai because the peanut flavor is usually too strong for me but at Spice and Rice, it was really subtle and the noodles were chewier which I liked.
I ordered the yellow curry lunch special and it was really yummy. Comes with this cool vermicelli salad. The moon dumplings were suuuuuper good!
I also never saw this before but my friend got the red curry in a coconut and it came in a coconut shell with the meat scraped off and mixed in the with the curry. Pretty innovative. -

I really love Thai curries, and thanks to all the Yelpers, tried their oh-so-famous Panang Curry...and it tasted amazingggg, probably the best Panang I have ever had!
Well I had to compliment the Panang Curry first..here's the rest of the review :D
Lovely decor..took everyone's advice here and sat out on the patio, just next to the cute little fountain..Romantic..Hubby and I both enjoyed it...Nice to look at the pretty area outside too.
For starters, ordered their Chicken Satay...Delicious...The sauce that came with it was OK, nothing great, have had better. But, overall great starter.
For the main course had the Panang Curry with brown rice, excellent. Hubby ordered Spicy Thai Fried Rice with Chicken, which was really good too. The chicken was cooked to perfection.
Portions are huge...so be careful :)
Loved this dining experience..nice neighbourhood, lovely place and great food!!
Would I come back?? Hell, Yeah I sure will!!!!..I still don't know why it still feels like 4 stars and not a 5..Go figure :P -

It was really good... REALLYYYYYY good. But service was average. The awesome service everyone in these reviews has been raving about? Yeah, didn't get it. We were basically ignored except for the ordering/bringing out of dishes and a requested refill of water. And one thing I really hate is restaurants that automatically assume college students are too cheap to leave legitimate tips and buy legitimate food.
Anyways, my friend and I ordered Panang Curry, the basil noodles, and mango sticky rice. EVERYTHING was on point. I could eat those basil noodles for every one of my daily 5 meals and I might still crave them. And the Panang Curry? OoooOOooOOoOOoo DELISH. Mango sticky rice was good but not as good as other places I have tried.
Come here. But try not to look like a broke ass college student. You will fare much better service-wise if you come clothed in designer labels all around. -
Review from Lilly C.
I was first introduced to this restaurant my freshman year in college when a super senior wanted to take me out to dinner....lol that's another story in itself. I was young and naive and *rudely* brought my 2 roommates with me because I did not want to go by myself.. The next day he called me and then I *rudely* did not pick up the phone. -_- Needless to say, I never spoke to him again.. Yeah, well everyone learns from their mistakes haha. But my friends and I always joke around about the time he unknowingly took 3 girls out on a date lol. Now this restaurant has become a favorite for me and my girls :)
My favorites-
Pad See You- my favorite thai dish anywhere I go. I wouldn't say the pad see you here is better than any other place, but it is a necessary dish when I go eat thai food :)
Spicy Thai Fried Rice- I love thai fried rice. I love the way it is sauteed in garlic and lime with a spicy kick at the end. I must find the recipe for this!!
Lime & Herbs Chicken- minced chicken spiced with chili, ginger, lime juice, and peanuts, served with crispy lettuce...this is AMAAAZING!!! Definitely the highlight of our dinner.
Best part about it is that it's located in downtown La Jolla so you can walk around after and even go see the seals at La Jolla Cove! -

San Diego, CA
This is the best thai place I've been to in San Diego! Recommended by a friend who really knows her stuff, I took my boyfriend there for his first Thai food experience. I made a reservation early in the day for 7:30, and they got us sat in less than 5 minutes, with a full restaurant. We ordered alcoholic drinks, which arrived immediately afterwards, which is always a great start!
We started off with the Lime and Herbs Chicken appetizer, a sort of lettuce wrap. Extremely fresh tasting and delicious, and it was out in no time. I would have licked the plate if nobody had been there to see me.
We then split two dishes, the Garlic Pepper with Chicken and the Spicy Basil Noodles with Beef. Both were delicious, as well as very beautiful presentation-wise. The Chicken also came with a generous portion of Jasmine Rice. We finished every bite. My only regret is that we did not have room for dessert.
All in all, this is a great place to take guests or someone you want to impress. The ambiance is a little more than casual, but the prices are the same as you would find in any divey (but still yummy) Thai restaurant. The food is quick and the open kitchen is fun to watch. All of the staff is pleasant and helpful, and anyone would love this place. We will be returning!
