I have to change my review -- we just stopped by last night and they are no more. Much sadness on my part but if anyone knows the woman who ran the place please tell her that I love her.

We were walking down Valencia on evening feeling kind of hungry but not really in the mood for the yuppie scene. Checked out a half empty tapas place and was told by the snobbish waitress that there was a 2 hour wait (yeah right.) Continued our stroll and around 21st street there was the most incredible smells.
We were confused, we looked around ....
-- the only thing around was a whole foods store (closed),
-- a funny looking cafeteria kind of restaurant,
-- around the corner there was a pizza place (but when we looked in, our noses knew that wasn't it.)
So what then?
We decided to have a drink and appetizer at the funny looking place -- Spianzzino -- we went in, sat down and order 2 glasses of the house Chianti and a mixed a appetizer plate -- oh my god it was good!!! And huge!!! Almost enough for dinner, but by then we were being greedy so we ordered the mixed meat plate (which is really big enough for 2). Heaven!
Now we go back weekly.

I'd strongly recommend the Verdure alla Griglia and Grigliata Mista and any other dish that has 'mista' or 'misto' in the title but I would probably avoid the pizza (I'm not a pizza fan but why order ordinary when you could have something special) and I wasn't 'wow'-ed by their risotto (I didn't care for the tomato-base, plus I make a killer risotto and am very biased)

This is a funny looking place and not for the 'cloying crowd' (but wait -- is there anyone else in SF?)

Totally forgettable. The salmon pizza is really good the next day but the gnocchi was just okay. Could we please get something besides overpriced yuppie food and taquerias in the Mission?

Spiazzino is easy to miss, as it is smalll & tucked in next to the laundromat, but you shouldn't.  Good wine selection, nice salads, yummy creme brulee'.

DON'T go here! There is a reason why this place is empty even when restaurants on either side are overflowing: it's so mediocre nobody ever goes back. Their parmesean is the powdered stuff that comes in a cardboard cylinder (and tastes like that too), for example.   Granted, this place is not *terrible*. The decor is nice and the stoneware impressively large and white. If you're entertaining relatives from the midwest who think Olive Garden is haute cuisine it's perfect. But if you're used to San Francisco standards, go somewhere else. There are so many other places nearby.

the food was average at best and they definitely used boxed parmesan on my salad.  it's not bad inside (the decor, that is), but given the mission's plentiful offering of restaurant gems, i don't intend to return here...
