    Loved it!!!
Still one of the Best, even after not eating at Spettro for a few years, it is still The Best!
Heathers BooBerry Salad still tasted as good as i first tasted it in 1998. The Mango Salsa Salmon and the BlueBerry Ribs were soooo delishious and perfectly well cooked, that a butter knife was needed to tenderly cut thru ..... Monday night was perfect for Moms BDay.... soooo glad that it was, because not many great eateries are open on Mondays....
    thanks Spettro

I ate at this place several years ago and had a pleasant experience. So there was no hesitation when I was looking for a dinner stop, driving through the neighborhood. I like the atmosphere of this place and the service was EXCELLENT.

But the last time I ate here, the risotto gave me indigestion. Then, I ordered some take-out gnocchi in white sauce, trying to give them a second chance a week later. The gnocchi was flavorless and the sauce seemed like white soup broth boiled in too much butter. Never ever, ever, EVER order this dish again. The gnocchi didn't even taste like gnocchi. Inedible! Good thing their rolls were good, the only redeeming feature of the entire meal.

I've eaten here multiple times throughout the years, for multiple occasions. It's literally become our family's back-up restaurant, and i'm really glad it is. I would describe the food as "Hipster Italian". They have really good pasta, pizza, and other typical Italian dishes.
Our last visit was during Halloween, and it's really nice to see a restaurant get into the spirit! While some may say they over did it, I appreciated the fact that they showed they could show they have fun, while creating a festive, welcoming environment with more delicious dishes added to the menu.
I don't eat out too much, especially with my family, but the next time we're out for whatever reason, we'll probably end up here.

My favorite Oakland restaurant by a country mile. I have never had a dish here that I didn't love. Favorites include Smoked Chicken Risotto, Dovi Tofu, Chicken Canneloni, and the Booberry Salad. If you happen to catch them on a night where the specials include the ribeye steak, don't even think of ordering anything else. And there's no corkage fee on the first bottle of wine you bring in!

Good food and service. Must get: Jalapeno fettuccine. Get the Lingiuni Veracruz over the Seafood lingiuni. The place is cute and cozy. Came here on a Friday night and it started to get more crowded after 7pm.

Mouth-watering Jalapeno Fettuccini!  After that it was a mixed bag.

November seems to be the month of birthdays... February 14th + nine months = oh, November!  Anyway, we had a large group at Spettro's to celebrate two birthdays.  They easily accommodated our large group with a table out in the middle--no red curtains for us, but that was ok.

While most everyone couldn't help but clean their plates, service was definitely on the slow side.  That was fine though, we just sipped another carafe of wine.

Now getting back to the birthdays... Someone in the group (as often happens) sneakily informed our server of our friends' birthdays.  "So what does Spettro do for birthdays?" you might ask.  Well, they bring you an apple crisp with ice cream and candles.  Not bad, right?  Did I mention that they charge you for it?!  Major turnoff.  If you're going to charge, then tell us upfront AND let us pick the dessert, please.

Love the ambiance in this place, they have booths for couples that has a kind of romantic setting. Also good for groups/ family cuz they have long tables in the middle.

Who makes the salads on Friday nights?
I can tell you: someone who suffers from serious work pride impotence.

I gave Spettro 2 stars because for the most part, it's a pretty solid neighborhood option.
They have at least one person in the kitchen who resents having to make food the last hour. So, they tossed something clumsily together, overcooked the chicken into inedible rubber (AHEM- I paid $3 extra for that), gracelessly saturated the lettuce in layers of pasty caeser dressing, and filled the other entire half of the box with croutons. $8.00 + change later, I've thrown almost everything away and am making canned noodle soup.

Try testing the theory, in many restaurants this is a major shortcoming: the lateness of the hour or shift end is proportionate to the degree of laziness a paying customer absorbs via sub-standard preparation of food.

After feasting on stuffed habanero peppers and blueberry bbq ribs, we realized two things...

    (1) This is not Italian food.
    (2) But at least its really good!

I'm thrilled that after all these years of passing by Spettro on my weekly strolls from Urban Indigo to Sway, we finally gave this place a chance to tantalize our palates. And so it did...

    +1 for excellent customer service!

    Garrrr...pirate theme!

What a great group friendly family-run establishment. Come here to be overwhelmed by the array of Pavlov's dog's favorite choices.

The lamb shank was marrow sucking delicious! Also among the plates that was told to be YUM-O was the blueberry BBQ ribs.

Yeah, I used a Rachel Ray phrase with blueberry BBQ. Deal with it.

    Down it with a Pilsner!

This is a lively and quaint little dig--- great, attentive staff.  Bring your mints! Had the most garlicky ceasar salad here with the chicken marsala..... humongous---- no, GINORMOUS portions. An entree can be split between two or split so half can be lunch the next day. Great for an intimate dinner or a big crowd up to 10 (big tables are located in the center of the dining room).

Had dinner with the fam and six other Yelp/Facebook buds.  Spettro has one of the most inviting and colorful ambiances I have seen.

I'm not sure what theme they were actually looking for but I immediately thought of Lady and the Tramp sharing meatballs and spaghetti al fresco.
There were several tables against the wall with a mural depicting a night out in Italy/

J said Spretto reminded her of a pirate ship.  I could definitely see that too!
We all rocked in unison to spark the rolling of waves............aarrgh!

Even though there was a full house of diners the ambiance was still fun and convivial.  Everyone could feel the privacy of their own tables yet not feel invaded by the other diners.

We were served water and hot rosemary rolls as soon as we sat down.
The refills of both came immediately.

The service was great.  Our server and the staff were friendly and attentive.  Our drinks and food came in a timely manner.

The omnivores enjoyed their lamb shanks, steaks, gnocchi, chicken marsala, etc.  I stole a bite of my son's mashed potatoes--yummy and creamy---perfect!

I ordered eggplant parmessaen which was heavenly.  It came with generous sidse of creamy noodles Alfredo and steamed veggies--also yummy.  I had to take half of it home (too many rolls me thinks)

The vegan  huzby ordered the tofu with peanut sauce which  came with green rice and steamed veggies.  He wasn't wowed by it but liked it.

We also ordered the large Piedmont Salad Mixed Greens, Tomatoes, Cucumbers And Red Onion In A Tomato-Garlic Dressing sans the Crumbled Feta Cheese.  Good  but probably better with the Feta.

Not cheap but not expensive.  Definitely worth another visit.

I had higher hopes for Spettro. Maybe I just chose the wrong dishes but based on what I had, I am not believing the hype.

That night I chose the gnocchi, which was baked with a Parmesan cheese topping. I enjoyed it thoroughly until the last few bites. It turned very salty, and it couldn't have been the cheese that made it so. I said, "maybe it's just a fluke." My main course was one of the evening's specials, prawns and risotto. I was looking forward to creamy textures. What I got was a plate of arborio rice, and prawns -- to break it down further -- shrimp and rice.

The service was excellent, so I would like to give the restaurant another try.

My friend and I stopped in here on Sunday evening after a walk around Lake Merritt. We loved the ambiance of the red curtains, and the food was really exceptional.

Like Marzano on the Park, Spettro has a sort of an "upscale pizza place" feel. You could go on a date wearing dressy-casual outfits and it would feel like a date. You could also go in your jeans with a group of friends and the long tables in the middle of the restaurant would be perfect for casual beer and pizza.

Having just completed our walk, I decided I needed to order both a small pizza and a pasta. (This was way too much food for me, but I happily took it home to eat as leftovers.) I got the Yosemite pizza, a very meaty dish with onions and olives, served on pesto instead of traditional tomato sauce. I love pizza with pesto sauce, and I believe that pesto should not be reserved for strange veggie pizzas with artichoke and bok choy. Each piece was packed with toppings. I found the sausage and linguisa extremely tasty (sorry to hear that your sausage wasn't good, Esther K).

I also ordered the summer special Squash-Corn Ravioli with Alfredo sauce and mushrooms, which was delicious. The squash and corn were delicate flavors, well complemented by the rich alfredo sauce.

We each had a large glass of sangria that was pretty good; fruity and slightly bubbly, not too strong, refreshing.

I thought the prices were extremely reasonable, and the menu offered a multitude of items both Italian and American. Usually parking along this street can be difficult - there are many spaces, but even more people looking to park - so give yourself a little extra time for parking if you are unfamiliar with the area.

Lame, lame, lame....one of the thing I know about how to maintain a good business and keep the clientele you have is to abide by the rules, sort of.

If your website notes you close at a certain time, i.e.- 10 p.m., every day that your business is opened, guess what, that's what time you REALLY oughta shut down and not an hour and 15 minutes early. No, shit.

While, I understand that business is slow on any particular night (Monday) and the kitchen closed early (1.25 hours----ridiculous Spettro), yet to turn away people is a very good way to insure LESS and LESS business shows up, even during regular business hours, until finally the kitchen and your restaurant is closed for good.

    Lame.

Ate at Rolling Dunes, 2 doors down, they were more than happy to feed us and they were very pleasant and patience and the food was comforting to my bruised restaurant etiquette.

Good food and friendly waitstaff. If you're looking for a high end Italian restaurant, this is not going to be the place for you. instead if you are looking for a place with decent grub, fair prices and friendly service, this is not a bad choice.

The chicken marsala, rigatoni, and chicken cannelloni were all tasty and so was the mushroom ravioli. Were these super authentic Italian dishes, I have my doubts, more like Americanized Italian. The place is good for families and anyone else just looking to meet up grab some beers and a big meal. Portions on some dishes seem larger than others so make sure to inquire.

My gf took me here for dinner and from the first moment they brought the doughy bread to the table my impression of the place was hampered.  But, determined to enjoy my dinner, I ordered what sounded like an amazing pizza for myself. A super meaty pizza with linguisa. But unfortunately, it was so salty that I had to wash it down with water after each bite.

The jalapeno pasta my gf ordered was definitely tastier than my meal but still not impressive.

The salad we shared was probably the best part of the meal.

Our server was super nice and attentive but with so many great restaurants in the area, I'm not sure I'll be back.

Went here for my birthday dinner w/ my husband & toddler. We got lucky & got a private table on the side. The ambiance was festive w/ red lights streaming from the ceiling.

Food:The booberry salad was ok. I was expecting it to be amazing as the other reviewers indicated. The glazed nuts in the salad were homemade but burnt so the salad kind of took on a funny taste. My husband had the grilled salmon w/ mango salsa & raved about it. The rosemary rolls were delicious. My kid liked chicken fingers from the kids menu as well as the rolls.

Overall: I liked the place. It was charming, most of the food was great & the staff was pleasant. Will be back!

I really want(ed) to like this place.

On my most recent visit, my boyfriend and I were seated at one of the elevated tables along the wall.  With the red tablecloths and warm hues, the ambiance felt cozy.  I grabbed his hand:  "It's like we're on a real date!"

The food, though, missed the mark for us.  I was eager to try the Booberry Salad--greens tossed with blueberries, candied walnuts, blueberry vinaigrette, and goat cheese.  It was just ok: The walnuts were totally yummy and the sweetness was nice with the acidity, but difficult to eat because they were in giant clumps.  It's worth trying, but not as amazing as reviewers say.

The biggest disappointment was the pizza.  We had sausages on ours--a mistake because it ruined the dish.  The smell and taste kept reminding me of dishwater.  My boyfriend, who's not a picky eater, scraped off all the meat and put it to the side.  It would have been better if it was topped with a more flavorful chorizo which would have helped with the blandness.

After the meh dinner, we couldn't bring ourself to get dessert ($5 each).  Service was very friendly, but not attentive.  A little disappointing because only 3-4 tables were occupied.  I think their biggest plus is their offering of different portions (small, medium, large) of the salads and pizzas; it really makes sharing much easier.  A medium salad is good to share for two.

I'm willing to give Spettro one more try.  Maybe I caught them on bad nights.  Or maybe I was too sober.

A group of us went for dinner here my first time. First off the service was great quick and efficient. They have pizza, italian and other various items on the menu. Wine and Beer available. We all ordered a varity of options and all came out hot, fresh and flavorful.

As an appetizer we wanted to try the Peanut Butter Pizza. It has PB and tomatoe etc. on it. I really like PB but not a fan of the pizza. One small slice tolerable but it would be good as a breakfast pizza with crust and PB but no tomatoe or vegee on it. I do not think any of us were crazy about it. But hey if it's still on the menu someone's eating it, right?

The food was all good, the only issue I had was I ordered tortilla soup and it was not hot enough. But then again I like my soup steaming hot as it seems to cool quickly so I believe it should be served very hot. Great rolls I think they had rosemary in them they were a hit.

The pastas were served plentiful and flavorful.

Oh wait there was one more complaint. The Calazone was huge but not enough meat in it and it was dry and not good. I think they need to improve the filling and add more sauce and meat and cheese and make it gooey and tasty. When a man with a big appetite who is not that picky says it's not good then you need to take this into consideration.

All in all good food and service. I would go back.

Mostly Italian inspired cuisine, but with fusion flavor. Not really traditional, but fun.

We've been there twice with friends and went through a variety of meals. Most of them were pasta dishes with the occasional risotto. With that comes usually a creamy buttery sauce or something with a mushrooms white wine sauce with chicken, shrimp or fish. We have not tried the pizzas.
Service was adequately friendly and the waiter kept up with our table even though it was a busy night.
The decor looks Oakland/Berkeley artsy with a pirate theme. I thought that was odd for a pseudo Italian place.
Prices are $12-17 for most dishes.
The only thing that needed some inspiration was the fried calamari. Not the best I had.

Overall solid 4 stars and we will be back.

The first thing I normally judge a restaurant by: if they serve bread when you sit, is if the butter is refrigerated.  The most difficult thing that a lot of places don't understand is how hard it is to spread cold butter. -1

The wine was ok, we ordered house reds. I got the jalapeno shrimp fettucine, which was actually really quite yummy. +1

The bf got chicken cannelloni and said he liked it. No desert but we'll be back.

The bread is crazy good as is every entree i've had there. I've avoided the fettucini with jalapeños as it seems kinda gross but i really like the caesar, lamb shank, chile colorado, and i think manicotti? It was some stuffed pasta. anyways it was also good.

Nothing we ordered was better than 3 stars.  And my salad dressing was the worst I've ever had.  And bizarre.   Think they may have dropped a box of something really acidic in by mistake.

Seems they do lots of casual / family business, which is surprising because while it's not quite expensive, it's more than I would expect.

Affordable AND delicious Italian food! Never thought I'd put those two words together...

This place has cute decor and everything I've ordered has been delicious. I've eaten her twice. My favorite dish has got to be the lamb shank and the coconut lime mussels. I wish I could've eaten 2 plates of those mussels for dinner... mmmm

Aside from the shank and mussels, I've also tried the tortilla soup (good!), mushroom ravioli (good!), and the chicken cannelloni (ok).

4/5 dishes were yummy, not bad! Check this place out!

I didn't think I would be back, let alone writing a make up review.  But I was dragged back here by my sister and her husband.  I am so glad they did!

I have been back 3 or 4 times and haven't had an experience like the bad review again.  Even on a Saturday night, we are seated without much of a wait.  Service since has been good to great and food is always awesome!

Upon the suggesting of our waitress, we ordered the peanut butter/bacon/tomato pizza, and so glad we did!  I never thought this would be good, but I have ordered it each time I have been there since I loved it so much! They will do half n half pizzas too with is awesome, so you can try it on only half of you pizza if you don't want to dive into a full peanut butter pizza experience.

I really wish they would redo their seating.  I am okay with communal tables, but it is always just to tight and crowded, even when there is not many people in there it seems squished.  First they HAVE to get rid of the booths.  I know, EVERYONE LOVES A BOOTH. but hey are so hard to get in and out of, they are NOT comfortable, and they take up too much space!  A re-work of the layout would do Spettro some real good!

I had an eggplant dish and managed to try the other 3 dishes my friends were having.

I was not simply underwhelmed there was way too much flavor and I thought the food was too complicated. I did not like it at all.

I didn't bother trying anything "Mexican" they serve here but I hear it is better to stick to the Italian. Either way I'd say just don't bother going. Granted all three of my friends LOVED the food. Its heavy (as typical American Italian food is), saucy and with lots of flavors. I won't go back. And after eating here with my b/f I question his taste in food. *head shake*

Side note I'm a HUGE food snob. So you ought to take my reviews with a grain of salt depending how "into" food you are and your own personal tastes.

Why bother? This place is aspiring to be mediocre, but doesn't quite achieve even that. The food was sad, lackluster, and boring.
I had to stay away from the pizza (wheat intolerant) so ordered other dishes. It cured my hunger pains but that's about it. I definitely won't be back, though my friend who ordered pizza said it was pretty good. Service was friendly but very slow (soup arrived at the same time as the entrees).
Why dine here when there are so many other quality restaurants that are at least trying to make delicious and/or unique food? You definitely get the feeling that they are not even trying here for something good.

I really am overdue to write a review for Spettro. Not sure why the overall rating is so low. After several times visiting this local spot the food and the service has never disappointed me. My favorites are the chicken cannelloni, smoked chicken risotto, and when they have it, the paella is amazing (hoping they have it back on the specials soon!). It's not a traditional Italian place, so if that's what you're looking for then this place isn't for you. But it has really good food and fresh ingredients - along with friendly staff. Also, it can be a casual meal with friends, or for date night.

Don't forget to bring your favorite wine either - they don't have a corkage fee! So whether you like two buck Chuck or a fancier bottle of V. Sattui wine, you can bring it and they'll also chill it for you if need be.

I really like Spettro.  The food is tasty and service is always solid.  Also the atmosphere casual and funky.  Good spot for a date night.

    My fav's:
    Booberry Salad
    Chili Colorado
    Tortilla Soup
    Ribs

    Run don't walk to Spettro!

One of my regular hangouts, Spettro is a friendly, family oriented restaurant with good basic food and warm, attentive service.  Excellent variety of salads, which is hard to find.  Feel free to ask the staff what is good that day!

Food is over priced for average Italian. Not to mention it is super rich. I didn't feel good after eating the lasagna. No more Italian for me.

I came here with two of my friends for dinner.
I ordered the eggplant parm.(i dont usually order that out anywhere, but I went out on a limb and took a chance) and it was wonderful. It was one of those places where I had good conversation and good food with good company. I didn't feel rushed, we were there for like 2 hours just having a good time. The waitress was nice.  It was packed and we still got our food timely. The prices were definately good, not expensive especially for the quality of food.

This is a great neighborhood place where the staff is friendly and the food is amazing.  We eat here all the time because it's such a great experience.  It's also a great value.

I enjoyed our cozy dinner here with friends.

We found street parking just down the street (free after six).  Our waitress kept the delicious rosemary dinner rolls coming as we used them to soak up the coconut lime sauce from the mussels appetizers.  I thought the mussels were just okay but that sauce.  Next time I think I will just order a bowl of that sauce.

I had a difficult time narrowing down the dinner options because everything sounded interesting and good.  For my entree I ended up ordering the mushroom ravioli.  Their ravioli are wonderful egg pasta pockets filled with nutty, rich mushroom goodness.  The port cream sauce with caramelized onions complimented the raviolis well.  I found the dish to be very filling and ended up taking half home with me.  Needless to say, I only waited about an hour before scarfing down the remaining pasta.  I just couldn't resist.

I like flexibility.  I also like mashed potatoes.

When I was younger I used to be able to put one leg behind my head and scoot across the ground with the other.

Now I can do the leg thing, but I have to stay in one place or I'll sprain something pretty important.

I'm getting older and thus more set in my ways, evidently.

I can still bend my thumbs backward and I can still spread my toes apart like a tree frog.  Oddly, these skills do not impress the way the leg trick used to.  But when I want some attention, they still score me the hairy eyeball every now and then.

    People are  impressed with flexibility.

Spettro is one of the most flexible places in which I have ever dined.  Their menu boasts, "Substitutions Welcome!"  I usually get the salmon and they never bat an eye when I ask for it with mashed potatoes instead of rice, steamed vegetables instead of sauteed, and mango salsa on the side.  The place is extremely kid-friendly, providing crayons and children's fare, and still manages to be a pretty romantic neighborhood haunt for a nice date with a sweetie.  They have a lot of tasty wines by the glass, including Chianti and Proseco.  And there is zero attitude if you bring your own vino--NO CORKAGE!

The food is consistently decent.  My advice is to keep it simple.  Their coconut lime mussels are yummy, and their salads are great.  You can even order salads in small, medium, or large size depending on your appetite.  If you don't see what you want on the menu, they'll often make it for you if you ask.

I've been disappointed with some of the more complicated dishes at Spettro, so I tend to stick with what I know like.

I told you I am getting kind of stuck in my ways.

Solid 3 stars to Spettro!  I had Diego's Chiles, which came with "green" rice and sauteed Swiss chard.  I don't eat white rice, so I have no idea how it tasted.  The Swiss chard was a little bland, but when I dipped my spoon a few times in the juice from my companion's Coconut Lime Mussels, it was heavenly.  I couldn't get over that dish (the mussels) - they were just delicious.  I wish I'd ordered it, myself.

Their salads you can order in three sizes, which is very cool.  Small is appetizer size (not Applebee's appetizer size, but a true side salad), medium could probably feed 1 person with a little extra, and the larges is to share.  Their Caesar dressing was just the way I like it - anchovy-y and garlicky.  I should have asked for an extra side because it could have used just a bit more wetness to the leaves.  But I enjoyed it, anyway.

Our server was very friendly and the place is very quaint.  I hope to come back and sit at the elevated round tables, which sit in their own little open cabana-thing.
